The world's most decorated gymnast clinched her sixth Olympic gold medal in front of a delirious crowd at Bercy Arena after she left all her challengers in her shade, completing a triumphant comeback three years after withdrawing from the same final at the Tokyo Games.

Aged 27, Biles edged past Brazil's Rebeca Andrade by 1.199 points to become the oldest athlete since 1952 to win the most coveted individual title in women's gymnastics. "My GOAT necklace is kind of an ode ... it is crazy that I am in the conversation of greatest of all athletes because I still just think that I'm Simone Biles from Spring, Texas who loves to flip," said the American who owns a jaw-dropping 39 world and Olympic medals.

In a tight race with Andrade, Biles was surprisingly left trailing in third place after a flawed performance on the uneven bars during the second rotation.

But if Andrade had started to fantasize about becoming the first Brazilian to win the Olympic event which requires female gymnasts to excel on all four apparatus, Biles brought her back to reality just 30 minutes later as she was back on top of the standings following a solid showing on the balance beam.

On the uneven bars, Biles got too much air on her flip as she transitioned from the higher to the lower bar and had to bend both knees to avoid touching the ground.

"On each event we're very similar in scores. I was like, 'okay, I think I have to bring out the big guns this time'," added the American who opted to execute the more difficult Yurchenko double pike vault knowing that she would be pushed all the way by Andrade.

In a sign of great camaraderie, a beaming Andrade applauded Biles as soon as the American had struck the final pose of her floor routine, sitting on the mat with her left hand covering her face. Andrade did not need to wait for the score to flash up to know who would be crowned champion and quickly went up to hug Biles.

"It was really cool, knowing that I made her work, right?" Andrade said of Biles. "It's an honour to be able to compete next to her."

The Brazilian earned a second successive silver in the event, having finished behind Biles' teammate Sunisa Lee in Tokyo.

Lee fought back from a disappointing start on the vault to claim the bronze with 56.465 points. Three years ago in Tokyo, Biles withdrew from the event to prioritise her mental health after suffering from the "twisties", a condition involving the temporary loss of spatial awareness that some gymnasts can experience when executing high-difficulty elements.

Her withdrawal caused concern among her vast fan base about whether she would ever set foot on the Olympic stage again.

Biles proved she was no quitter as she captured her second gold medal of the Paris Games, having led the U.S. to the team gold on Tuesday, and her second all-around Olympic title after also winning the individual event in Rio in 2016.

Biles became the first woman to win two all around titles at the Games since Vera Caslavska triumphed in 1964 and 1968. She will be on the hunt for three more golds in Paris as she has also qualified for the vault, floor exercise and balance beam finals.

Paris Olympics 2024: Simone Biles stands head and shoulders above rivals after clinching gold

Andy Murray said he was retiring "on my terms" as his trophy-filled career came to an emotional end at the Paris Olympics on Thursday, closing another chapter on tennis's golden generation. The former world number one and three-time Grand Slam title winner slipped into retirement aged 37 when he and Dan Evans lost in the men's doubles quarter-finals at Roland Garros.

American pair Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul delivered the knockout blow with a 6-2, 6-4 victory on a packed Court Suzanne Lenglen. Britain's Murray had already announced that the Olympics would be his last event.

"I'm proud of my career, my achievements and what I put into the sport," said Murray. "Obviously it was emotional because it's the last time I will play a competitive match. But I am genuinely happy just now. I'm happy with how it finished."

He added: "I'm glad I got to go out here at the Olympics and finish on my terms because at times in the last few years that wasn't a certainty."

Just a few hours after Murray had made his exit, he cheekily wrote on X: "Never even liked tennis anyway".

Career-long rival Novak Djokovic described Murray as "an incredible competitor". "One of the greatest warriors tennis has seen. His fighting spirit is definitely something that I'm sure is going to inspire many generations to come," said the Serb.

Rafael Nadal, the winner of 22 majors but battling more injuries at the age of 38, exited the Paris Olympics on Wednesday and suggested that he had played his last match at Roland Garros, where he won 14 of his Slams.

Nadal also effectively ruled himself out of the US Open, sparking more speculation that the great Spaniard is also finished in the sport. That would leave just 37-year-old Djokovic -- winner of a record 24 Grand Slams -- still active amongst the sport's eminent talents who have carved up 69 majors between them.

Murray famously ended Britain's 77-year wait for a men's champion at Wimbledon when he triumphed in 2013, defeating Djokovic in the final. He added a second title in 2016, taking his career majors total to three after breaking his duck at the 2012 US Open.

Four years later he defeated Juan Martin del Potro to become the first player, man or woman, to win two Olympic singles golds.

Murray also led Britain to the Davis Cup title in 2015, the country's first in 79 years. He has won 46 titles in all and banked around $65 million in prize money. However, he has been ravaged by injuries in recent years, slumping to 117th in the world.

"It's hard because I would love to keep playing, but I can't," admitted Murray at the All England Club. "Physically it is too tough now, all of the injuries, they have added up and they haven't been insignificant."

Men's tennis has already opened up a new frontier. Jannik Sinner, the 22-year-old Italian, succeeded Djokovic as Australian Open champion in January and eventually took his world number one ranking. Carlos Alcaraz, 21, won the French Open and successfully defended his Wimbledon title, sweeping Djokovic off court in a one-sided final in July.

"It was a privilege to share the court with you, Andy!" Alcaraz wrote on X in tribute to Murray. "Congratulations on a legendary career and for being an example to all. You will always have a fan here."

'Proud' Andy Murray bows out of tennis with Paris Olympics defeat

Spain's dream team met its match as Rafa Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz's hopes of an Olympic doubles gold medal were ended by Americans Rajeev Ram and Austin Krajicek on Wednesday, the defeat almost certainly Nadal's Roland Garros farewell. Their progress had captivated the crowds on the site of Nadal's mind-boggling 14 French Open singles crowns but the journey ended in a 6-2 6-4 quarter-final defeat.

'If this was the last time, I enjoyed it'

"If this was the last time it was an unforgettable feeling and emotions. They gave me the love and support every single second and it's super, super special to feel that," the 38-year-old Nadal told reporters.

"Nadalcaraz", as they have become known since joining forces, were given raucous support on a rammed Court Philippe Chatrier, the din sounding more like a soccer arena as the fans roared on the Spaniards.

When 2023 French Open doubles winner Krajicek served for the match and went break points down there was pandemonium inside the arena with the umpire struggling to maintain order.

The American fourth seeds somehow kept their cool though and when Krajicek blasted down an ace on match point it was met by almost silent disbelief as the umpire got off her chair to confirm the ball had kissed the white tape.

Nadal began the Games carrying the Olympic flame in the opening ceremony, but ends it without the third gold medal he craved on what could be his final bow on the Parisian clay. As Nadal trudged off alongside the man who has replaced him as a force in tennis, it felt like the end as fans snapped photos on their phones.

"For me personally it was disappointing to not bring back a medal for Spain," Nadal said. "I tried my best in every single minute I was on court but it was not enough. "I don't know what's going to happen in the future, but if that's the last time I enjoyed it."

Twenty two-times Grand Slam champion Nadal had been coy about when he will end his career but it seems a matter of time. Asked if he would play at the U.S. Open after the Olympics, he said: "I can't give you a clear answer, I need some time but for me it looks difficult."

In truth Nadal and Alcaraz could have few complaints as they came up against a well-drilled partnership with the 40-year-old Ram, a four-times Grand Slam men's doubles champion, superb throughout with razor-sharp net play. In their two previous matches in Paris, Nadal and Alcaraz had ridden a wave of support, coming up with some inspired play to raise hopes that they could go all the way.

But this time the 21-year-old Alcaraz, who earlier on Wednesday reached the singles quarter-finals, lacked his usual spark and served consecutive double faults to virtually hand the Americans the opening set.

There was no coming back this time and Alcaraz dropped serve to love at 3-3 -- the Spaniards' frustration showing as they disputed a line call after a sizzling Ram winner. "I enjoyed every single second that we played together," Alcaraz said. "Disappointed as we wanted to keep going."

Paris Olympics: 'Nadalcaraz' bow out! Doubles dream over for Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz in quarters

On Thursday (Aug 1), the Harmanpreet Singh-led Indian team's unbeaten run in Paris Olympics 2024 edition came to an end. After beating New Zealand and Ireland and managing a draw versus Argentina, India faced 2018 World Cup winners Belgium in a crucial Pool B game. Despite an early 1-0 lead, Indian men's hockey team lost 2-1, after a lacklustre defensive performance from the side.

The contest began with India's Abhishek Nain scoring a goal in the second-quarter. At the halfway mark, India were still 1-0 ahead but Belgium managed a turnaround in the last two quarters courtesy of their relentless attacking game and grit. India's woes were evident from the fact that they conceded as many as 11 penalty corners in the game, while Belgium gave away only three. As a result, Belgium's Thibeau Stockbroekx (33rd) and John-John Dohmen (44th) chipped in with a goal each to take their side to a 2-1 lead.

Paris Olympics 2024: Harmanpreet Singh-led India go down to Belgium despite early lead

The action continues in the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024 edition. So far, India have only two medals, both courtesy of Manu Bhaker (in mixed and women's shooting event). Day 6, i.e. on Thursday (Aug 1), will be one of the busiest days for the Indian contingent in the Paris Games with a chance to also bolster their medal tally. The likes of PV Sindhu, Lakshya Sen, HS Prannoy, Swapnil Kusale, Nikhat Zareen, Chirag Shetty-Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, etc., will be in action.

In badminton, many superstar shuttlers will feature in the Round of 16 in the singles category whereas Chirag-Satwik will face another challenge in the quarterfinals. Paris Olympics: India's Day 6 schedule, timings, medal games, athletes and all you need to know

The Paris Olympics 2024 edition continues to make news. An image from the mega event is making heads turn on social media platforms. Most of the sports lovers have already seen the image. A news agency photographer named Jerome Brouillet, working with AFP, clicked Brazilian Olympic surfer Gabriel Medina paddle into one of the day’s biggest waves at one of the world’s heaviest surf breaks during the men's surfing Round 3 on Monday (July 29). Little did Brouillet know that his picture, where Medina is kicking out of the wave after a ride that led to a record Olympics score, in Tahiti, would be regarded as a global sensation.

Notably, Brouillet was on a boat in the channel — an area of deeper, calmer water to the side of the wave without a clear line of sight of the initial action. He, however, was in prime spot waiting for the Brazilian to "kick out" -- exit the wave face at the conclusion of his run when Brouillet clicked him. The moment of capture is so brilliant that it shows the surfer leaping from his surfboard and raising his finger in celebration of his Olympic triumph, with his surfboard pointing skyward parallelly.

As a result, even Medina shared the click courtesy an Instagram post.

Paris Olympics: Brazilian surfer's MINDBOGGLING image goes VIRAL, photographer HAILED for brilliant capture

Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz have lit up the atmosphere at the Paris Olympics 2024 edition by teaming up in a doubles event for Spain. On Tuesday (July 30), the duo moved past Netherlands' Tallon Griekspoor and Wesley Koolhof in their second-round clash to progress to the quarterfinals. While on court, the pair has been an instant hit, but it hasn't been a smooth sail for them injury woes. Nadal returned to action in the Games, after a long injury layoff whereas young sensation Alcaraz -- who won the French Open and Wimbledon this year -- also shrugged off a groin injury scare during the ongoing competition.

In addition, the two aren't used to playing doubles. However, Nadal and Alcaraz -- widely known as 'Nadalcaraz' -- have still shown remarkable progress together but have plenty to achieve in the ongoing Games in Paris. After their second consecutive win, Nadal said they have been 'suffering but also having fun'.

Nadal, who is chasing a third Olympic gold, said, "We had fun because the score was positive in the (match) tie-break. We have been suffering but we are enjoying playing together, we are creating good synergies, good energy, so yeah, we are having fun in general terms. We have the positive relationship outside of the court that helps inside (the court)."

On Tuesday (July 30), India eased past Ireland courtesy of a brace from skipper Harmanpreet Singh as the men's hockey team remain unbeaten in the Paris Olympics 2024 edition. After a 3-2 win over New Zealand and a 1-1 stalemate versus Argentina, the Men in Blue went past the Irish line-up without dropping much sweat in a crucial Pool B encounter in the Games. With this win, India have momentarily secured the top spot in Pool B, overtaking Australia and Belgium. They will face Belgium and Australia, respectively, in their remaining league games.

Talking about the contest, India were on the attack in the first two quarters. During this time, skipper Harmanpreet gave his side a lead in the middle of the first quarter from a penalty stroke. In the second quarter, Harmanpreet made it a 2-0 lead for his side. While Ireland came out all guns blazing in the second-half and put India's defence and goalkeeper PR Sreejesh under pressure, they couldn't convert any of their chances.

Paris Games: Netizens HAIL Manu Bhaker for HISTORIC FEAT after bronze in mixed 10m air pistol event

Novak Djokovic defeated Rafael Nadal at the Olympic Games on Monday, claiming a 6-1, 6-4 victory in the pair's 60th and potentially last meeting. It was 24-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic's 31st win in a rivalry which began on the same Roland Garros clay courts in 2006. Nadal was largely outclassed in the much anticipated encounter, only coming briefly to life when he won four games in a row in the second set.

"I'm very relieved," said Djokovic. "Everything was going my way, I was 6-1, 4-0 up but I played a sloppy service game and gave him chances." He added: "I never thought back in 2006 that we'd still be playing each other almost 20 years later."

In a sign of the wear and tear, the pair have endured in recent months, Djokovic wore a protective strapping around his right knee while Nadal's right thigh was heavily strapped. But Djokovic played freely, forcing Nadal to scamper around Court Philippe Chatrier where the Spaniard had collected 14 of his 22 Grand Slam titles.

The Serb raced to 4-0 lead, on the back of a double break, and held for 5-0 before Nadal stopped the rot much to the relief of a packed, sweltering crowd. Djokovic pocketed the one-sided opener when 2008 Olympic gold medallist Nadal ballooned a forehand wide of the mark.

The statistics made grim reading for the 38-year-old who managed to eke out just four points off the Djokovic serve in the first set.
Djokovic responded in style, a drop-shot leaving Nadal flat-footed as the Serb broke for 5-4 on a fourth break point and clinched victory in style with an ace. Despite his defeat on Monday, Nadal still has hopes of a gold medal in the men's doubles where he is playing alongside Carlos Alcaraz.

Fresh from a 3-2 win over New Zealand, Harmanpreet Singh-led Men in Blue had a tough contest versus Argentina but managed to prevent a loss courtesy of a last-minute thrilling goal from skipper Harmanpreet in an important Pool B match at the Games. This became only the second instance of a draw between the two heavyweights, with the first occurrence dating back to 2004.

Talking about the contest, it was Argentina who took a 1-0 lead after a 0-0 scoreline at the halfway mark. Both teams tried their luck but a goal from Lucas Martinez saw his side go 1-0 up in the latter part of the second quarter. India failed to capitalise on many opportunities, especially by missing to convert a chance via penalty with just two minutes left in the third quarter. Argentina's defence proved resilient from the beginning of the match before India were blessed with another penalty corner in the end moments of the game, which was finally converted by Harmanpreet after three retakes of the PC. Here is the video of Harman's goal:

Speaking to Sports 18, Indian skipper Harmanpreet said after the game, "Whenever we come on to play, we just think about converting every chance we get. Be it a field goal or a PC (Penalty Corner). Well, better late than never, because this was a very important match. Overall, we played really well...Team is playing very good. Both on the ball and off the ball, going into the opponent's circle...We are getting good chances, but yes, I think we need to improve our finishing."

India will next lock horns with Ireland, i.e. a crucial and potential must-win match for Harmanpreet's side. Ahead of the encounter, the Indian captain said, "I think our plan is to focus match by match. Today was Argentina, and now we will analyse Ireland, who are also a good team. No match will be easy, and we will need to work on every detail we can get."

A 20-year-long pursuit came to an end after Manu Bhaker won a bronze, on Sunday (July 28) in the 10m air pistol shooting event at the ongoing Paris Olympic 2024. She is the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal in shooting. In the 2004 Athens Olympics, it was Suma Shirur who made headlines after qualifying for the women's final in the 10m air rifle shooting event. She, however, finished eighth in the medal round. This year, the shooting contingent already has one medal in their kitty and Ramita Jindal finished in seventh place in the 10m air rifle event on Monday (July 29).

WION spoke to Suma Shirur, chief coach of the rifle team, on what took a woman so long to qualify and bring home a medal. "I wouldn't call it a lack of facilities but I guess it’s more the overall growth of the system. Though women have been doing well in other events, in the Olympics, something or the other has eluded them. I am happy that Manu not only qualified but brought home a medal and Ramita and Arjun Babuta have also qualified for the final."

Speaking on the country's sporting culture, Shirur emphasises that India still lacks on this front as not enough athletes take up sports after school and university level, which creates a gap in the community. “From the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) standpoint, they are moving towards gender parity with equal number of events for men and women. As a society, it has taken its own course of time, yes, it has been a struggle, but a lot is being done to bridge this gap. There is always room for improvement, the wheels are turning and it's always about doing better.”

Shirur says, it all boils down to having more people pursuing sports as a career, more participation, and subsequently reaching high levels of achievement.

"On behalf of our entire team, I first and foremost want to apologise to the players and staff at New Zealand Football and to the players on Team Canada," she said. "This does not represent the values that our team stands for. "I am ultimately responsible for conduct in our programme. Accordingly, to emphasise our team's commitment to integrity, I have decided to voluntarily withdraw from coaching the match." New Zealand Football said Thursday they have referred the matter to the disciplinary committee of football's governing body FIFA seeking "urgent action". "There is no place for this type of action in football and it is critical that urgent action is undertaken to address this integrity breach," New Zealand Football chief executive Andrew Pragnell said in a statement. "To hear now that the Canadian team had filmed secret footage of our team training at least twice is incredibly concerning and if not treated urgently could have wider implications for the integrity of the tournament."

Paris Olympics 2024: Canada football staff sent home over drone scandal

Superstar Spanish duo Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz have played down medal expectations in the forthcoming Paris Olympics 2024 edition, which kicks off on Friday (July 26). The two will partner each other in the doubles event, which has become a huge talking point. While there are high expectations, they have reasoned out to not expect much given the two have not played doubles a lot in recent past.

'Carlos hasn't played many doubles, I haven't played many doubles or singles lately'

Speaking to the reporters, on Wednesday (July 24), the 38-year-old Nadal said, "I understand a little bit the morbid illusion of seeing us play together but let's not think that this translates into success, I think it's a mistake. Carlos hasn't played many doubles and I haven't played many doubles or many singles lately."

"We are going to do our best to try, at least, to leave with the peace of mind of having done everything possible to get where we can get (but) obviously, we have not been able to prepare together for a tournament like this, where there are other doubles teams that have been preparing," he added.

The Spaniard further said, "Things happen much faster, the reflexes have to be ready and the movements are not automatic when one has not played for a long time, there are doubles movements that are completely different from the individual ones."

Meanwhile, Alcaraz -- who is coming off a win in French Open and Wimbledon -- pointed out, "I have not had the opportunity to play many doubles tournaments, but obviously having the illusion of returning to Roland Garros, to these courts that I have always enjoyed playing... makes it easier."

He concluded, "We also have days of training, individually and doubles to adapt as best as possible again, for my part to return to clay and be able to gain confidence to start the tournament in the best possible way."

Nadal's career has gone downhill due to plethora of injury concerns since 2022. Alcaraz, on the other hand, is in prime form. It will be interesting to see how the two gel on court and how far they can go in the doubles event. Spanish fans are certainly hoping for gold from this dream pair in the doubles.

Notably, the Olympic tennis competition will commence on July 27 and will go on till Aug 4.

Paris Olympics 2024: 'Think it's a mistake' - Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz downplay medal expectations

Seven-time Olympic champion Caeleb Dressel put World Aquatics bosses on the defensive on Thursday after expressing in front of them his lack of confidence in their handling of a Chinese doping case.

The US swimmer was asked, at a press conference with President Husain Al-Musallam and executive director Brent Nowicki and other athletes, whether he was confident there would be a level playing field at the Paris Games.

"No. I don't. No. Not really," he replied. "I don't really think they've given us enough evidence to support them with how this case was handled."

While Dressel's viewpoint echoed that of other top competitors, the circumstances made uncomfortable listening.

"Here we make sure that every athlete that is coming to the Olympic Games has been tested...we are making sure and we will make sure that all the athletes who compete are clean," he said.

No Chinese athletes attended the press conference, with a selection of aquatic sports represented.

Asked whether any had been invited, Al-Musallam said the selection was based on availability.

Paris Olympics 2024: Swimming veteran Caeleb Dressel has no confidence in result fairness after doping scandal

With the Paris Olympics set to kick off on Friday (Jul 26), Australian BMX freestyle champion Logan Martin has encountered an unfortunate incident. As he prepares to defend his Olympic title, Martin lost his equipment and wallet as thieves broke into the team's van in Brussels, Belgium. The Olympic medallist has described the incident as a "crazy start" to his title defence.

On Wednesday (Jul 24), Martin shared videos on Instagram showcasing the van's passenger side window smashed whereas police officers were also seen talking with a member of the Australian team to enquire more about the mishap.

'What a crazy start'

Martin wrote on his Instagram post, "Our van got broken into last night. Luckily my bikes weren't in there, although my bike bags were in there with some things in it. What a crazy start to the trip. Our van got broken into overnight. Luckily most of our stuff was in our room and we managed to recover a lot of it too. I lost my wallet, backpack and a few other things but overall it didn’t end up being too bad. It’s unfortunate when people feel the need to do things like this."

'What a crazy start' Martin wrote on his Instagram post, "Our van got broken into last night. It’s unfortunate when people feel the need to do things like this." Paris Olympics: All you need to know about Indian archers' schedule on eve of opening ceremony

The possibility of boxing being excluded from the programme at the Los Angeles Olympics and beyond is "terrifying" and would hit athletes in the developing world the hardest, Australian boxer Harry Garside said. The boxing tournament at the Paris Games is being organised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which stripped the International Boxing Association of recognition last June, saying it had failed to complete reforms on governance, finance and ethical issues.

Garside, who won a bronze medal in Tokyo three years ago, told reporters boxers loved fighting for their country. "To take that away from some young people around the world, it would be a crime, truly," he added. "Boxing is one of the oldest sports. To see it maybe not be in the Olympic Games, it is honestly terrifying.

"Boxing is also historically a poor man's sport. If you look around the world, it's the third world countries that are the best. It's the athletes that come from these really rough areas, they're the ones that come and win gold medals."

Neeraj Chopra at Paris Olympics 2024: All you need to know about Indian javelin star's schedule at mega event

The Paris Olympics will be a spectacular event at a time of historic global disruptions and growing divisive forces, International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach said on Monday, four days before the Games opening ceremony. The Olympics in the French capital will see several firsts, with an opening ceremony on barges along the river Seine instead of the traditional ceremony in an Olympic stadium.

The Games will also incorporate the city's major landmarks, including the Eiffel tower, into the competitions, many of which will be staged in urban areas across the city. It will also be the first Olympics to have gender parity, with equal numbers of men and women participating.

"Like billions of people around the world we are awaiting with impatience the youngest, most inclusive, most urban and most sustainable Games," IOC President Thomas Bach said at the opening of his organisation's session in the French capital. "We are convinced that together with the entire world we will experience spectacular Olympic Games," he said, with French President Emmanuel Macron in attendance.

More than 10,500 athletes representing 206 national Olympic Committees will compete at the 16-day multi-sports event, 100 years since the last time the French capital staged them, with more than 30,000 security officers on duty.

Bach also highlighted the global sports body's challenges in what he called a new world order. "We are witnessing a new world order in the making," he said. "Historic disruptions are upending the system of international relations that has been in place since the second World War." "The trends are clear: decoupling of economies; beggar-thy-neighbour; narrow self-interests trumping the rule of law; "Global South" vs "Global North". Everywhere you look, multilateralism is on the back foot."

He said the IOC's focus on solidarity, which will be fuelled by increased revenues over the next years that are to be distributed to national Olympic committees, international federations and other stakeholders, was crucial. Bach said the IOC had already secured $7.3 billion for the years 2025-28 and had raised $6.2 billion in deals for the period 2029-2032.

He said changing lifestyles of young people in a digital world risked alienating the Olympic movement from a young generation. "We can and we must change before we are being changed," Bach said. "For this change we need to change our mindset. We need the mindset of the digital natives. We have to go where the young people are, in the real world and the digital world." "If we want to remain relevant in their digital lives we must engage with this digitally native generation in their digital way of living," he said.

The IOC is pushing through with the creation of Olympic Esports Games in a 12-year-deal with Saudi Arabia in an effort to tap in to a younger audience and connect them with the Olympic brand.

"In these difficult times there are so many divisive forces tearing humanity apart," Bach said. "In this world of division the athletes personify our shared hope for a better future."

India will compete in the men's and women's table tennis team event at the Olympics for the first time at the Paris Games after climbing into the top 16 in the rankings, but coach Massimo Costantini is still not satisfied.

India's table tennis team have had some success at the Commonwealth Games but have failed to match that at the Olympics and Asian Games.

However, their qualification for the team events, introduced in 2008, has renewed hopes of a first-ever Olympic medal in the sport, with the Indian men's team ranked 14th in the world as of July, while the women's team was 11th.

"I think making the team event is already a big achievement, because being in the top 16 in the world is not easy," Costantini told Reuters. "But for me it's (the rankings) too close, like wearing clothes that are too tight. You're not comfortable, you need to be comfortable to perform as required.

"My goal is to not to fight at the last minute to make the top 16, but to be in the top 10, top eight, or even top four. To not even have the doubt whether India will play in the team events at the Olympics or not."

One of India's leading prospects at the Olympics will be 2018 Commonwealth Games champion Manika Batra, who broke into the top 25 this year and achieved a career-high ranking of 24 after her victory at the Saudi Smash in May.

Batra (ranked 28) and Sreeja Akula (ranked 25), are among the women leading India's charge up the rankings.

"We have to be consistent in taking opportunities. We don't want just sporadic occasional results that make us climb the world ranking. We need more stability," Costantini said.

"Manika was up there for almost one year, hovering between 35 and 38. She was maintaining her performances quite well, and then one competition helped her make that jump. The women have had great results, they did well. But we can do much better."

The Italian coach added that he has been using data provided by artificial intelligence to improve his players, with the team partnering up with Indian sports analytics company Stupa Sports Analytics for a training camp.

"Technology and AI can help have a better understanding of performance. Sometimes the words of the coach are not enough," added Costantini, who returned to the Indian table tennis set up for a third stint this year.

"Besides the words we can have something objective. You can think you played well, but through these reports and data, you know you actually were just okay, or you think you played horrible and actually were very, very good.

"We're just making little adjustments, like they do in motorsport, where small details can reduce the time maybe by one millisecond. In table tennis, it is exactly the same."
