Paris Olympics 2024 edition is set to begin on July 26. The showpiece event is keenly-awaited after India's success in the previous edition, held in Tokyo three years back. In the Tokyo Games, the Indian contingent ended with the best-haul of seven medals. Thus, expectations are high this time around as the countrymen are hoping for a double of the 2020 edition's tally.

All eyes will be on javelin star Neeraj Chopra, shuttler PV Sindhu, Chirag Shetty-Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, weightlifter Mirabai Chanu and the hockey teams. The Indian Olympic Association released India's full schedule for Paris Olympics with just few days to go for its commencement.

India's full schedule at Paris Olympics 2024: All you need to know

Greece's Stefanos Tsitsipas said the Olympics holds a special significance to him due to its Greek origins, adding that he is hoping to realise his dream of winning an Olympic medal at this month's Paris Games. Greece, the birthplace of the Olympic Games, have won three medals in tennis at the Olympics, all of which came in 1896 at the first modern Olympic Games held in Athens.

"Greece and the (Olympic) Games for sure fit like bread and butter together. It is something that has been a dream of mine since I started playing tennis," world number 12 Tsitsipas told Stats Perform in an interview published on Wednesday.

"Since I first picked up a tennis racket, I always wanted to be an athlete that gets to participate in something like that. And of course, to be aiming for a medal is something extraordinary. "So my dream keeps on evolving, keeps on existing, and my path towards that is slowly building up. For me the best redemption is walking away from the Games with a medal."

The tennis tournament at the Olympics will take place from July 27-Aug. 4 at Roland Garros, which also serves as the venue for the French Open.

Tsitsipas has enjoyed some success on the clay courts of Roland Garros in the past, making it to the French Open final in 2021 and reaching the quarter-finals of the Grand Slam in the past two editions.

"Getting a good preparation before the games start in August is something that I'm really looking forward to," Tsitsipas said. "I've had great success there a few years ago at the same stadium playing the finals of the Roland Garros.

"So coming back there with that confidence and that living in the backside of my mind allows me to strive and work towards the same end goal that I ended up pulling off this amazing run that I had a few years ago."

Tsitsipas will compete in the singles at the Olympics as well as the men's doubles alongside brother Petros.

Paris Olympics 2024: IOA releases list of 117 athletes and 140 support staff for mega event

Stephen Curry admits playing on a stacked USA Olympic team where he is not expected to carry the offence like he does with the Golden State Warriors in the NBA is requiring a great deal of adjustment. The star point guard scored just three points in 22 minutes during USA's 98-92 win over Australia in a warm-up game in Abu Dhabi on Monday that saw the Americans almost blow a 20-point lead in the last 15 minutes.

Lakers center Anthony Davis came off the bench to lead the scoring for USA with 17 points and 14 rebounds, while Minnesota Timberwolves' Anthony Edwards was right behind him with 14 points, four rebounds and two assists.

"It's an adjustment, not just for me, for everybody," said Curry, who will be making his Olympics debut in Paris this summer. "Even how we're rotating the lineups right now, just because we're trying to get a feel for different combinations. "You're going five minutes at a time, then you sit. Hockey subs, that's different, how we're playing with the talent around, that's a different adjustment. "It's just a mindfulness of knowing where your shots might come and being ready for those."

Head coach Steve Kerr had said before the game he planned on testing out different starting lineups during these exhibition games and he did indeed tweak the first unit he used in last week's win over Canada, keeping LeBron James, Curry, and Joel Embiid but starting Edwards and Jayson Tatum instead of Jrue Holiday and Devin Booker.

Kevin Durant remains sidelined with a calf strain, while Davis, Booker, Holiday, Bam Adebayo, and Tyrese Haliburton served as the second unit that alternated with the starters throughout the game.

USA led by 20 points midway through the third quarter but the Aussies narrowed their deficit to just six points with five minutes left in the fourth. Back-to-back threes from Indiana Pacers' Haliburton briefly got the Americans back on track but the Boomers upped the pressure once again and got dangerously close to erasing the gap.

Australia's Jock Landale, Josh Giddey and Dyson Daniels all finished in the double digits and combined for 51 points. Kerr said Monday's game -– the second of five friendlies USA will play prior to the Olympics -– was a welcome warning against complacency and a reminder the team can't take their foot off the gas pedal after building big leads.

He is confident there is enough time for the group -– which is the most star-studded and most decorated to represent USA since the famous Dream Team of 1992 –- to iron out the kinks before their Olympics opener against Serbia in Lille on July 28. Kerr paid special tribute to Davis, who also found himself in an unfamiliar role on Monday, coming off the bench.

"He was amazing tonight, he's been fantastic those first 10 days or whatever we've been together," said Kerr. "Obviously we've got a lot of talent, every single guy is capable of starting and playing big minutes.

The strength of our team is our depth and we have to utilise that depth and put pressure on teams for 40 minutes, regardless of the combinations." Next up for USA is an exhibition clash on Wednesday in Abu Dhabi against Serbia, who will be led by reigning NBA MVP Nikola Jokic. Jokic and his Serbian teammates were in the stands and watched the first half of the USA-Australia game.

"They're a great team. They're in our pool in Paris and we're going to have to beat them when it counts in a couple of weeks but it'll be good to get a good feel for what we're going to face," said Curry of the 2023 World Cup silver medallists. "They have a very strong, big, physical team and we have to match that physicality and be able to play Team USA basketball. It would be good to get some film on it too."

Paris Olympics: Stephen Curry says playing for USA an 'adjustment' after warm-up win vs Australia

Tokyo badminton gold medallist Viktor Axelsen is not resting on his laurels ahead of the Paris Olympics but the Dane is being careful not to overdo it in training having reached the age of 30. With nine Olympic medals, Denmark has for years been a top contender in badminton. Two of those medals have been gold - one bagged in men's singles three years ago by Axelsen.

Axelsen told Reuters that people tended to underestimate the physical intensity of the sport but that he was looking for a bit more balance in his training regime heading to Paris. "It has been more of a challenge this time around, making sure that I time my training in the right way and don't overdo it," Axelsen, who towers over his rivals at nearly 2 metres tall, said. "While before the Tokyo Olympics, I could just push in training and I recovered a little bit faster than I'm doing now. "I've turned 30 as well and I think that makes a big difference. In your 30s, you really have to make sure that you do everything you can in order to recover."

Axelsen said he had recovered well from rolling his right ankle during a match against Taiwan's Lin Chun-Yi at the Singapore Open in late May, an injury that forced him to withdraw from the semi-finals of that tournament.

The main threats to his bid to emulate Lin Dan in 2008 and 2012 by retaining the men's singles title are China's Shi Yuqi and Malaysia's Lee Zii Jia but also his compatriot Anders Antonsen, the fourth seed.

"An all-Denmark final would obviously be absolutely amazing," Axelsen said. "But, let's see - there are obviously a lot of strong contenders. "There's a big bunch of players in the top 15 who can who can make a run for it," Axelsen said. "We are closer in level -- the difference in level of play is not how it was in Tokyo."

Paris Olympics 2024: Viktor Axelsen keen to get balance right before badminton title defence

Former Indian captain Kapil Dev, who recently got appointed as the president of the Professional Golf Tour of India, has backed golfer Aditi Ashok to return with a medal in the forthcoming Paris Olympics 2024 edition. The marquee tournament kicks off later this month and all eyes are on Aditi, who finished fourth at the Tokyo Olympics and won the hearts of countrymen.

Talking to PTI Videos, India's 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil said, "I want to see Aditi playing with the same pomp that she played with in the Tokyo Olympics. For cricketers and golfers, form is very important. If Aditi plays in the same form, she has a good chance to win a medal. And if she has a bad week, then she can only sit out and rue the loss."

Kapil further opined that there was a severe dearth of quality international-level golf courses in India. The veteran, who has been playing on the PGTI circuit for years, mentioned, "In India, there is a catch-22 situation. You have to have good golf courses up to international standards with top tournaments and people playing golf in tougher conditions and scoring well. Some of the courses in India have to improve also and give the players to play in decent courses."

He further stated, "I have seen playing 20 under 19 under 18 under but conditions may not be as good as we would like to have. Somebody who has played in DLF Gurgaon or Oxford, and hit 15 or 20 under, then you can say that's the different level you have played."

Kapil also shared his vision and priorities after assuming office as PGTI president. He said, "My first vision is to bring money to golf and more golf to the players. At the moment they play 15 or 20 weeks a year if we can make it 30-35 weeks a year... that's the vision."

"The only way it can come is if more sponsors come. So I would like more tours and tournaments to take place. I will open the door for many companies and the corporate world to come out and promote golf," the ex-cricketer highlighted.

He further added, "Golf is slightly different because every person has to earn his own money. In cricket, the Board decides the fees. Start talking to the Corporate world if they can come and organise more golf tournaments. That's the immediate plan. I am not the lone golfer who played the game. I can't say I am the one who will lead it. Yes, I will try and help a lot of golfers in the country and bring more corporates into the game."

Talking about Aditi, she has had her share of ups and downs but remains India's best bet to win a medal in golf during the upcoming Olympics. In Tokyo 2020, she finished a stroke behind the bronze medallist Lydia Ko and was only two strokes behind gold winner Nelly Korda. This time around, the 26-year-old will be eager to use her past experience and return with her maiden Olympic medal in Paris.

Yes, I will try and help a lot of golfers in the country and bring more corporates into the game." Talking about Aditi, she has had her share of ups and downs but remains India's best bet to win a medal in golf during the upcoming Olympics. In Tokyo 2020, she finished a stroke behind the bronze medallist Lydia Ko and was only two strokes behind gold winner Nelly Korda. This time around, the 26-year-old will be eager to use her past experience and return with her maiden Olympic medal in Paris.

Olympics: PM Modi interacts with Indian contingent ahead of Paris departure; Chopra vows to defend crown

Spiralling travel and accommodation costs, French political tumult and security concerns are discouraging many sports fans and visitors from attending the Paris Olympic Games this summer.

Cities that win a coveted chance to host the world's biggest sporting event often do so on expectations that they will attract throngs of visitors to showcase themselves and boost their economy.

But Paris has a handful of factors going against it that have held down bookings.

Flight bookings to the French capital - an indicator of tourist activity - are expected to increase by 10% year-on-year from June 6 onwards, according to flight ticketing data firm ForwardKeys.

That is a stark contrast to the 115% increase in tourist arrivals for the 2016 Rio Games. Even the Tokyo Games, held during the COVID-19 pandemic, saw a 20% increase, ForwardKeys said.

Data from Paris-based consultancy MKG shows hotel reservations have dropped since last year for the weeks ahead of the Olympics, along with a 25% revenue decline for much of June.

The data alongside interviews with travel agents, sports fans and ticket sellers show high prices and security concerns are making even the most ardent Olympic fans reluctant to attend.

"Right now, it's the lowest bookings we've seen in 25 years for almost any sports event," Alan Bachand, a sports travel agent based in the United States, told Reuters.

The findings underscore the challenges major cities face hosting international sporting events - they are already crowded and expensive, scaring off more price-conscious consumers.

They also show that unrelenting travel demand, with travellers willing to splash cash on experiences rather than goods in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, is slowing as they become more sensitive to increased prices.

London experienced something similar in 2012. It only saw a 3% increase in arrivals, as many tourists steered clear of a city that would normally be inundated with tourists over the summer.

Still, it will be a blow for the French capital - one study recently estimated the Games would generate up to $12 billion in economic benefits to the Paris region. Last year, the Australian state of Victoria withdrew from staging the Commonwealth Games because of ballooning costs.

Night Bus

Emma Mathieson, 29, has tickets in August for the women's bronze football match in Lyon and is hoping to get tickets to the gold match the following day in Paris.

But rather than staying overnight afterwards, she will catch a night bus back to London. Accommodation of over 300 euros ($323) for the night was above her budget.

"I would have loved to have seen more women's matches or group stages if it was more affordable," she said.

Average hotel prices between July 26 and Aug. 11 have surged by 70% to 342 euros a night from last year, according to the Paris tourist office.

Even wealthier visitors have been put off. Bachand said four-star hotels were charging up to 1,000 euros a night during the competition, with many clients shying away as a result.

Even so, homesharing site Airbnb says it has seen record Paris bookings. As of March, nights booked in the Paris region during the games were 400% higher than the same time a year ago.

Business Fallout

However, Air France-KLM said on Monday it expected weaker-than-expected summer sales as travellers avoid the Olympics.

Global Travel Moments, a luxury travel agency, said clients had also cited security worries in addition to pricing as a reason to postpone their trips.

France is on its highest level of security alert as the Games approach, with the country additionally undergoing snap legislative elections.

Islamist terrorism is the main security worry, the French capital's chief of police Laurent Nunez said last month.

"People are giving it a wide berth given the current climate," said Duncan Greenfield-Turk, Global Travel Moments' chief travel designer, citing "challenges" like the election called by President Emmanuel Macron.

One client recently postponed a trip to Paris until next year while another chose to visit before the games, he said.

Luxury retailers are hoping to boost sales in other areas outside of Paris as tourists avoid the French capital.

Benefits

Some travel agencies hope there will be a last-minute rush for tickets and accommodation and potential discounts in the final weeks before the games begin.

Visitors may be arriving by train or car which will not show up in flight data, but could drive last-minute home rental bookings, said Jamie Lane, short-term rental analytics firm AirDNA chief economist.

Eurostar said train ticket sales volumes to Paris until July 1 for the Olympics and Paralympics travel period were up 7% year-on-year.

"It's going to be okay. In France, as usual, they're always not happy and always criticising," said Samuel Riezzo, who runs a firm selling tickets for sports events.

Both Manchester City's Alvarez and Benfica's Otamendi have already played over 50 games this season for club and country. Along with Rulli, who is also in the Copa America squad, the trio are set to join Mascherano's squad after the tournament, where Argentina are in the quarter-finals.

World Cup winner and Argentina captain Lionel Messi had already ruled out playing at the Olympics, with the 37-year-old citing the need to manage his workload. The men's football tournament at the Olympics begins on July 24, just 10 days after the Copa America final. France will deploy 35,000 security agents and military for the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games. For the first time in the history of summer games the ceremony will be held outside the walls of the stadium. The parade of athletes will be held on the Seine River with boats for each national delegation with spectators not needing a ticket to access.

France to deploy 35,000 security personnel for the Olympic Games 2024 opening ceremony

The river Seine is still failing water quality tests one month before the Paris Olympics when it is scheduled to host the open-water swimming competition and the swimming leg of the triathlon, results showed Friday.

The latest tests, completed last week and released by the Paris mayor's office, showed levels of the E.Coli bacteria -- an indicator of faecal matter -- are far above the upper limits imposed by sports federations.

On June 18, the level of E.Coli was 10 times acceptable levels and at no point did it fall below the upper limit of 1,000 colony-forming units per 100 millilitres (cfu/ml) used by the World Triathlon Federation.

The readings for enterococci bacteria were better, but they were still at unsafe levels for three of the seven days of last week.

"Water quality remains degraded because of unfavourable hydrological conditions, little sunshine, below-average seasonal temperatures and upstream pollution," the mayor's office said in a statement.

French authorities have spent 1.4 billion euros ($1.5 billion) in the last decade trying to clean up the river by improving the Paris sewerage system, as well as building new water treatment and storage facilities.

But major storms still overwhelm the capital's waste water network, some of which dates back to the 19th century, leading to discharges of untreated sewage directly into the river.

After months of unusually wet weather, the Seine is currently high up its banks, with its flow around four to five times higher than its usual level in the summer months, according to recent readings.

Organisers insist that some dry weather and sunshine in coming weeks should be sufficient to make the Seine fit for the outdoor swimming events.

"We are still confident with the delivery of the competitions in the river Seine," chief Paris 2024 organiser Tony Estanguet told reporters on Tuesday during a visit to the Olympic village in northern Paris.

"We knew from the beginning that the plan that we decided was really aligned with good conditions at the end of July," he said, speaking in English. "Now we are entering the final lap and the good zone."

Delays

The high water levels and rain are also disrupting preparations for the opening ceremony which is also set to take place on the river on July 26.

For the first time for a summer Olympics, the Games will begin outside of the main stadium, with athletes set to sail six kilometres (four miles) down the famed waterway on nearly 100 river boats.

But with currents unusually strong, organisers cancelled the first full practice session for the ceremony on Monday.

Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo, who wants to create public swimming spots in the river next year as part of the Olympics legacy, also had to postpone a planned dip to demonstrate its cleanliness last weekend.

She has promised to take to the water during the week of July 14 instead.

Constantly asked about contingency plans if the Seine remains too dirty and turbulent once the Games begin, Paris 2024 organisers publicly insist there are no alternatives to their plans.

Behind the scenes, sources have told AFP that the opening ceremony can be scaled back and could even become a much-shortened parade over a bridge in front of the Eiffel Tower.

For the open-water swimming, organisers have flexibility in the schedule, enabling them to delay the competition for several days in the event of a downpour that would lead to a spike in pollution.

In the worst-case scenario, it would be cancelled.

The triathlon can also be moved in the schedule and could become a duathlon -- just running and cycling -- without the swimming.

Local newspaper reports in Nice, southern France, suggested this week that the triathlon could be moved to the Riviera holiday spot, but this was denied by the organising commitee.

Athletes are busy training and trying to ignore the noise.

"Every time, there's been problems," French open-water swimming coach Stephane Lecat said last week, referring to last-minute suspense around Guanabara Bay for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics and concerns about the water quality in Tokyo in 2021.

"There are places around Europe that are a lot worse than the Seine and we swim there every year," he added.

Nadal won Olympic singles gold in 2008 and a doubles gold in 2016. The 38-year-old will be playing at the Games for a third time.

"I didn’t expect to play doubles at the Olympic Games with Rafa," Alcaraz told reporters on Monday. "It is a unique moment for me but of course I am very happy about it. Let’s see how it’s going to be but it’s going to be a great time. "Honestly, I feel he is going to teach me how to deal with everything. I am the young guy who needs to grow up as a player, to grow up as a person as well.

Aditi Ashok's consistency over four rounds at the Tokyo Olympics nearly proved enough to clinch an unlikely podium spot, and the 26-year-old believes she needs to rediscover it if she hopes to go a step further and win a medal at this year's Paris Games. Ashok came fourth and missed out on a medal in Tokyo by a stroke after being in contention right to the finish. She has gone from strength to strength since then and had a promising 2023, recording five top-10 finishes on the LPGA circuit to rise to a year-end ranking of 42.

"I feel I've gotten better with all aspects of my game," Ashok said in an interview with Sports Authority of India (SAI) media. "2023 especially was a great year performance-wise and that's because I managed to pick up some distance in the off season last year. I would say winning a medal is pretty high up there in terms of career achievements..."

In 2024, Ashok's form has been more mixed, but with several events left on the calendar before the Aug. 7-10 women's Olympic golf tournament begins at Le Golf National, Ashok still has time to find her groove.

"My results have been average. I have played good in streaks but not for all four days. I do feel I'm playing well so I'm looking forward to the summer events leading up to the Olympics...," Ashok said. "I'm looking at each event with the same importance and trying to do my best for all four days each week. That should get me in a good frame of mind and routine before the games and hopefully that will be enough at Paris."

Ashok will also be keen to bury the disappointment of missing out on a gold medal at last year's Asian Games, in which she lost a seven-shot lead in a final-day meltdown to finish second behind Thailand's Arpichaya Yubol.

"I think I played some of my best golf in Tokyo. I gained a lot of confidence I would say and not much learning," Ashok said. "With the Asian Games I played one of my worst rounds of the year on the final day. Which was after the best round of my life on the third day. So sometimes you fail and there's no reason as to why."

Indian ace shuttler PV Sindhu went past top-seed Han Yae from China to qualify for the Malaysia Masters semifinals on Friday (May 24). Sindhu emerged on top of her Chinese opponent in the quarterfinal with a 21-13, 14-21, 21-12 win to make it to her maiden semifinals on the BWF tour in 2024. Given the 28-year-old has not been in great form of late, her progress into the last four bodes well in her preparations for Paris Olympics, in July-August.

Talking about her quarterfinal clash, Sindhu made a confident start with a lead in the opening game. While Han Yae made a strong comeback in the penultimate game, with a 21-14 win, Sindhu returned to her best in the final game to move ahead into the next round.

Sindhu will now face the winner of the other quarterfinal between Singapore’s Putri Kusuma Wardani and Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan in the semifinals. Since then, form and injury concerns have led to her downfall. However, the Indian star is trying her best to return to her consistent best with Paris 2024 just two months away.

Serbian long jumper Ivana Spanovic said she is hoping to finally secure an elusive Olympic gold medal at her fifth Games in Paris later this year and produce a fitting climax to the story of her career. Spanovic has had a few near misses on sport's biggest stage, claiming bronze at the Rio Olympics in 2016 and finishing fourth at the Tokyo Games with a best effort of 6.91 metres.

The 34-year-old has been successful in every other major event she has competed in, winning gold at the World Championships, World Indoor Championships, European Championships, European Indoor Championships and Diamond League.

"Being a part of the Serbian Olympic team for the fifth time makes me extremely proud, and this Olympics should be, so to speak, perhaps the last test in that arena," Spanovic told Reuters. "Actually, not perhaps the last, but indeed the last test in the arena, but surely some of my highest ambitions of completing my entire story."

LONG JUMP AMENDMENT

Should Spanovic return for a sixth Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028, she could find herself competing in a markedly different long jump event. Governing body World Athletics is set to trial an amendment which involves introducing a take-off zone where jumps would be measured from an athlete's take-off to landing position, getting rid of foul jumps to make the event more appealing to fans.

The proposal has been met with criticism from some athletes, with Greek reigning Olympic and world outdoor champion Miltiadis Tentoglou saying he would quit the event if it is passed.

Spanovic said she was also not a fan of the proposal, adding: "Many things are changing, mostly because of TV shows, minutes, and attractions. While we support efforts to increase the sport's popularity, there are alternative ways (to do that).

"We are definitely not in favour of changing the fundamental beauty and value of a particular sport or discipline in that way, in my opinion, as there is no point. "The whole allure and fascination, rests in the fact that someone will set a world record or succeed or fail based on accuracy. I could have been an Olympic champion and a two-time or three-time world champion, but I had a minimal foul, so I wasn't."

Spanovic also weighed in on World Athletics' decision to award $50,000 each to the gold medallists at the Paris Games, saying it could be a boon to self-funded athletes. "I believe it is a nice kind of reward (and a way) to recognise the hard work and dedication of the athletes, teams, and individuals who invest all of their resources to achieving that common goal," she added.

Two Indian wrestlers, Deepak Punia and Sujeet Kalakal, were stranded at the Dubai airport due to unprecedented rains, which delayed their flights to Kyrgyzstan, where they had to reach in time for their mandatory weigh-ins. However, due to the delay, they landed late and were denied participation in the Asian Wrestling Qualifiers, hurting their chances of boarding the flight to Paris for the 2024 Summer Games. But despite this, they still have one chance to punch their tickets for the Olympics in June. The weigh-in for Deepak (in the 86 kg category) and Sujeet (in the 65kg category) was supposed to happen at 8 am local time on Thursday, while their bouts were scheduled on Friday evening. While the 17-member wrestling contingent reached Bishkek on time, the duo was left behind as several flights got rescheduled due to the heaviest rains recorded in Dubai over the past two days. In fact, after the request from the WFI, the officials at the venue waited 10 more minutes for the two wrestlers to complete their mandatory weigh-in after the deadline. But the two wrestlers were not able to make it on time,” the source said as quoted by India Today. It’s not over yet! Considering this was their second-last chance of qualifying for the 2024 Summer Games in Paris, the duo can still punch their ticket, with their final opportunity coming during the World Qualifiers in Turkey in May. World Cup winners Spain guaranteed their place at this year's Olympics in Paris with a crushing 3-0 win over the Netherlands in Seville in the Nations Cup semi-final on Friday.

France, who have already qualified as hosts for the Olympics, beat Germany 2-1 in the other semi-final meaning the final place in Paris will be taken by either the Germans or the Dutch who will meet in the third-place play-off.

Jenni Hermoso put the Spanish on track, latching on to a neat pass from Aitana Bonmati to net the opener after 43 minutes.

Hermoso had also scored on her return to action last October in her first game back for her country after disgraced former Spanish football federation president Luis Rubiales forcibly kissed her during the World Cup medal ceremony.

Three Paris Olympics sites face slight delays and are being monitored, but all the sporting infrastructure is expected to be delivered on time for the start of the Games in July, the event's top infrastructure official said Wednesday.

Construction of one section of the athletes' village is running several weeks behind schedule, as is the renovation of the Grand Palais monument in central Paris that will host the fencing, the head of the Paris Olympics infrastructure body, Solideo, said.

A third site -- the Colombes swimming pool set to be used for training in northern Paris -- is not expected to be finished until June and is under observation.

"There are three sites out of 70 that are being monitored, without the schedule being at risk," Nicolas Ferrand told a hearing of the French Senate's sports commission.

"Overall, the works are totally on time and they are within the budget given to us, and with the levels of ambition that were set," he added.

Contractors are also racing to finish a crucial metro line extension in north and south Paris ahead of the start of the sporting extravaganza, but organisers remain confident that everything will be concluded in time.

Michel Cadot, who heads a Games co-ordination committee and is head of the National Sports Agency, also reassured the Senate committee the Games would be "perfectly on time and within budget."

The opening ceremony on July 26, which is set to see the teams sail down the river Seine in central Paris, is still being finalised.

Cadot said that the number of spectators was still under discussion with a reduction of 10-15 percent being envisaged, he said.

Organisers had initially announced plans for 600,000 people to attend in person -- most of them for free -- but the latest estimate is for 500,000, according to police and political sources.

The idea for the open-air ceremony -- the first time the parade will take place outside the athletics stadium in Olympics history -- has been dogged by criticism since its inception because of security concerns.

Cadot said that the ceremony could not be shifted to the athletics stadium as a "plan B" because it would be in use for rugby at the time.

Contingency plans entailed an "adaptation of the concept on the Seine", he said, which media reports have speculated could entail athletes being withdrawn if the risk of a terror attack was considered to be too high.

He also expressed confidence the Seine could be used for the open-water swimming and triathlon events as efforts continue to clean up the waterway.

Work is "advancing very well with remarkable results that are already visible," he told the senators.

Michel Cadot, who heads a Games co-ordination committee and is head of the National Sports Agency, also reassured the Senate committee the Games would be "perfectly on time and within budget." Cadot said that the number of spectators was still under discussion with a reduction of 10-15 percent being envisaged, he said. Poor water quality forced the cancellation of three swimming test events last July and August.
