<p>Commenting on the defence minister's telephonic talks, Ambassador Ackermann said, "we have proven our commitment to India as a military strategic partner which has grown over the last couple of months".</p>

<p>He highlighted that the phone call was "basically preparation for the bilateral meeting both ministers will have later in the month. And I think on the table of the inter government consultations, you will see a lot of military and defence policy also".&nbsp;</p>

<p>Following the signing ceremony (of the labour agreement), German Chancellor Scholz told reporters that this was an important deal that marked an effort by Berlin and Nairobi&nbsp;to cooperate more closely on migration.</p>

<p>“This can help us to compensate for a shortage of skilled workers,” Chancellor Scholz said, adding&nbsp;that Germany was already feeling the impact of such a labour shortage and that it “will be with us for years and decades to come.”</p>

<p>Kenyan President Ruto said the agreement benefits both sides because it brings together the potential of educated young Kenyans and German technology and resources.</p>

<p>Ruto pointed out that he&nbsp;wasn’t worried that the departure of some Kenyans could hurt his own nation’s development, noting that Kenya has a large population of young people, with the median age being around 20.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He added&nbsp;there were enough to support the further development of both Kenya and Germany.</p>

<p>For years, Germany has grappled&nbsp;with the need to attract more skilled workers from outside the European Union. Citing experts, the Associated Press report said that the country&nbsp;needs about 400,000 skilled immigrants each year as its ageing workforce shrinks.</p>

<p>The Downing Street described the effort as a “once in a generation opportunity” to “turn a corner on Brexit.” It stated that the full agreement was yet to be finalised.</p>

<p>A joint declaration released after the meeting said the two leaders want to take German-UK ties to “the next level.” It said that the deal, which could be finalised “by early next year”, will need to be "in full accordance with Germany’s membership of the EU, and the UK’s relationship with the EU".</p>

<h2><strong>What's the wiretap leak episode?</strong></h2>

<p>In what came as a massive embarrassment for Berlin, alleged call recordings of the German defence forces over the Ukraine war were posted on Russian social media by a state-backed journalist. Margarita Simonyan, the head of the Russia Today (RT) channel, posted the audio clip on her telegram channel, allegedly featuring German officers “discussing how to strike the Crimea bridge”, which links Russia to the Ukrainian peninsula.</p>

<p>German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reacted to the potential leak of sensitive communication by saying that a full investigation will be launched soon. Calling the leak “very serious,” Scholz said it was “now being clarified very carefully, very intensively and very quickly”.</p>

<p>A spokesperson for the German defence ministry suggested a conversation in the air force division was “intercepted.”</p>

<p>“We are currently unable to say for certain whether changes were made to the recorded or transcribed version that is circulating on social media,” the official told the news agency AFP.</p>

<h2><strong>The ‘leaked’ audio file</strong></h2>

<p>Officials talking on the alleged military call appear to be discussing the delivery of Taurus cruise missiles to Kyiv. Ukraine has long demanded Berlin supply it with the missiles but Scholz has rejected it publicly so far.</p>

<p>The officials can also be heard talking about potential military targets and the training of Ukrainian soldiers.</p>

<p>A section of German media was later reporting that the said military conversation took place on WebEx platform, and not on a secret internal army network, making it easier for Russia to intercept.</p>

<h2><strong>Political temperature soars</strong></h2>

<p>The alleged call recording, 38-minute-long, has set the cat among the pigeons in German politics, with top political leaders expressing grave concerns.</p>

<p>Roderich Kiesewetter, from Germany’s opposition conservatives, warned that further recordings might also be leaked.</p>

<p>Addressing reporters in Berlin on Tuesday, King Abdullah II said, “This is a red line ... no refugees to Jordan and also no refugees to Egypt.”</p>

<p>“This is a situation that has to be handled within Gaza and the West Bank,” he said. “And you don’t have to carry this out on the shoulders of others.”</p>

<p>Abdullah stressed that there is an urgent need to temper down the escalation of the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.</p>

<p>“The whole region is on the brink,” Abdullah said. “This new cycle of violence is leading us towards the abyss,” the Jordanian Monarch added.</p>

<p>"All our efforts are needed to make sure we don't get there," he said.</p>

<p>Echoing similar views, President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi reasoned why they can't let Palestinians in.</p>

<p>"The displacement of Palestinians from Gaza to Egypt means the same displacement will take place for Palestinians from the West Bank into Jordan," Sisi warned.</p>

<p>"While we have no firm proof that Iran operationally supported this cowardly attack, it is clear to us all that without Iranian support, Hamas would never have been able to launch this unprecedented attack," he said.</p>

<p>"The jubilant statements from the top of the Iranian regime and some other government officials in the region are abhorrent. The leadership in Tehran shows its true colours without shame, and thereby confirms its role in Gaza."<br />

<p>The poor results triggered soul-searching in Scholz's coalition, with senior figures acknowledging a new approach was needed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The elections were a "signal for the three (coalition) parties that a different pace is needed when it comes to solving the problems of the citizens in this country", SPD co-leader Lars Klingbeil told broadcaster ARD.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In contrast, there was cause for celebration for the anti-immigration AfD. Co-leader Alice Weidel declared the party was "on the right track", describing the polls as a "lesson for the (coalition) and a vote for change".</p>

<p>The elections came after a torrid two years for Scholz's government, which has had to contend with Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the ensuing energy crisis, which plunged Germany into recession.</p>

<p>Adding to the problems, the chancellor's coalition has been consumed by bitter infighting on issues ranging from climate laws to spending cuts.</p>

<p>Not helping the cause of the SPD and its coalition partners, both states are conservative strongholds. Hesse had been ruled for 24 years by the main opposition CDU and Bavaria since 1957 by the CSU, headed by Markus Soeder.</p>

<h2><strong>- Latest far-right win -</strong></h2>

<p>The SPD had sought to gain ground in Hesse by fielding a heavyweight to run for state premier, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser.</p>

<p>But the party won just 15 per cent of the vote, almost five percentage points below its last result in 2018, according to the latest projections late Sunday from ARD.</p>

<p>The CDU maintained its first place in Hesse and extended its lead by over seven points to 34.5 per cent, the projection showed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>State premier Boris Rhein is thus set to retain his job, while Faeser is left facing questions about her political future.</p>

<p>The AfD looked to have gained about five percentage points in both Bavaria and Hesse, building on recent local poll wins.</p>

<p>While it does not look likely to enter government in either state -- its strongholds are in eastern Germany -- analysts said it showed the party had broad appeal.</p>

<p>"There can no longer be any talk of (the AfD) being merely an east German regional party," said the daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung.</p>

<p>The AfD is traditionally an anti-immigration party but has also focused on attacking the coalition's unpopular climate policies, driven by the Greens. Critics argue they could unduly burden households.</p>

<p>Immigration was also a central theme at the polls as Germany -- like elsewhere in Europe -- faces a surge of new arrivals, reviving memories of a major influx in 2015.</p>

<p>The victory of the CSU -- the sister party of the CDU -- in Bavaria was widely expected and state premier Soeder will retain his post.</p>

<p>But with vote projections showing the party's worst result for decades, it could deal a blow to his ambitions to one day stand as a chancellor candidate.</p>

<p>Ahead of the vote, the state's governing coalition was rocked by a scandal when Soeder's deputy, Hubert Aiwanger, admitted to possessing Nazi pamphlets that were found in the schoolbag he used as a teenager in the late 1980s.</p>

<p>But Aiwanger, leader of junior coalition partner the Free Voters, managed to hang on to his job and his party increased its share of the vote after he claimed he was the victim of a "witch hunt".</p>

<p>In contrast, the parties from Scholz's coalition lost support in Bavaria and the FDP fell below the threshold to get into the state parliament.</p>

<p>If reports are to be believed, Germany is considering a ban on parts made by Chinese manufacturers Huawei and ZTE in its 5G networks from as early as 2026.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Quoting government sources, news agency AFP made the claims, adding that the Chinese companies will be eliminated from the country's&nbsp;"core network" as part of a "de-risking" strategy.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Apart from issuing a full ban on the new parts made by Chinese companies, the German government will also extend the ban on those parts that have already been installed. It wants to start by phasing out&nbsp;parts made by Huawei and ZTE in Germany's "access and transport network".&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz talked about the 'de-risking' strategy concerning China in July while publishing a 64-page document.</p>

<p>The contents of the document&nbsp;urged the German companies to reduce their reliance on Asia's rising superpower and said the government was examining if its current toolbox was sufficient to encourage this.</p>

<p>"We want to reduce critical dependencies in future," said Scholz at the time, adding that many companies had already adjusted to this new worldview.</p>

<p>"Many companies will continue to invest heavily in China and export to China...but they will also use the opportunities they have to invest, build up supply chains and export elsewhere," Scholz added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Chancellor’s spokesperson Steffen Hebestreit <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/germanys-olaf-scholz-sports-eyepatch-post-injury-says-excited-to-see-the-memes-632404">said</a> that Scholz, who has been running regularly for many years, was in good shape despite the injury.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to his spokesperson, the German chancellor has suffered minor injuries and will have to wear the eye patch for the next few days.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“He’s doing well under the circumstances,” Hebestreit said in a regular press briefing. “He was in a good mood this morning, although he still looks a little battered,” he added.</p>

<p>The accident which led to injuries happened sometime over the weekend, which also reportedly led to the cancellation of some of his appointments.</p>

<p>As per local media, Scholz fell while he was running in his hometown of Potsdam, which is 28 kilometres (17 miles) southwest of Berlin.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Scholz has been leading Germany since December 2021, prior to which he served as the finance and labour minister of the country and was also the mayor of Hamburg.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Despite the injury, Scholz was seen meeting and engaging with world leaders at the G20 Summit in New Delhi, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.&nbsp;</p>
