<p>Charan visits the hospital regularly in the hope of finding his brother Krishra's body, with whom he spoke moments before the crash.</p>

<p>However, the agonising wait seems endless, as he has only managed to identify some of his brother's clothes and is awaiting the results of a DNA test before he can claim them.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Like many others, Charan has sent his DNA samples for testing, a crucial process implemented by the authorities to ensure accurate identification when multiple claimants are involved. However, the timeline for receiving the test results remains uncertain.</p>

<p>As per BBC, last week, 29 bodies were identified through DNA reports, and officials have begun handing them over to their respective families. However, there are still 52 bodies that remain unidentified.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Biswajit Sahu, the chief public relations officer of East Coast Railways, assured the publication that the identification process is being conducted cautiously to prevent any errors.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He said that the identification of next of kin "is being done with the help of railway officials, Odisha police, Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation officials and AIIMS staff."</p>

<p>Nevertheless, as per authorities, as time goes on, the task of identifying the bodies becomes increasingly challenging. Questions have arisen regarding the duration for which unclaimed bodies can be kept and what should be done if there are no claimants.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Some have suggested mass cremation as a possible solution. However, as per Sahu, no decision can be made until the DNA testing process is completed.</p>

<p>On June 2, the Chennai-bound Coromandel Express rammed into an iron ore-laden goods train on the loop line near the Bahanaga Bazar station soon after which a third train arrived at the spot and met the same fate. At least 293 people died in this accident.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the days that followed after the accident, the railways spoke about the possibility of sabotage and possible tampering with the electronic interlocking system, the nerve centre of the Indian Railways’ signalling apparatus.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Opposition blames government for ‘misplaced priorities’</strong></h2>

<p>Congress said on Wednesday that the government continues to inaugurate Vande Bharat trains despite the rail accident.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“In the craze for inaugurating Vande Bharat trains, fixating on bullet trains and tinkering with specialised cadres, the Modi government has thoroughly compromised on basic issues of railway safety that don’t make for photo-ops and headlines,” Ramesh wrote on Twitter.</p>

<p>Additionally, the report also noted that the station master, a part of the operations department, was also said to have been responsible for not being able to detect the “abnormal behaviour” of the automated signalling system.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The CRS investigators also said that the first of the three collisions that occurred on June 2 was due to the recent repair work conducted at the signalling circuit to fix frequent problems at a nearby railroad, reported Reuters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The signalling staff at the site which carried out the repair work on the day of the accident said they were “misled” by the wrong lettering on the terminal and the circuit which showed that the automated system which guides a train from one track to another or the “point” had been shifted in the past, as per Indian media reports citing the official findings.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Since the location box where the wires were connected&nbsp;contained the wrong lettering, they indicated incorrect functions. The probe also found that the completion wiring diagram, which shows the technician the correct way of reconnecting the wires after maintenance work, was changed back in 2015 and was duly approved but the change of the labelling had not been done physically.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India's South Eastern Railway has refuted claims that one of its&nbsp;signal junior engineer was missing after interrogation by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with Odisha train tragedy.&nbsp;The CBI on Monday sealed the rented house of Soro Section signal junior engineer (JE). The agency is investigating the horrific accident in which 289 people lost their lives.</p>

<p>Indo-Asian News Service on Monday reported that the JE, named Amir Khan, was initially interrogated by the CBI at an undisclosed location. When the agency officials reached Khan’s rented house in Soro on Monday, they found it locked and the entire family missing.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, the public relations officer of the South Eastern Railway has said in a statement in Hindi that the media reports were 'factually incorrect' and that the staff member is not missing.</p>

<p>Hours after reaching the accident spot, the&nbsp;Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officially took over the probe to investigate the triple-train tragedy in the eastern Indian state of Odisha over the weekend.&nbsp;Since the accident claimed the lives of 278 people while&nbsp;injuring over 900, demands were being raised of a CBI query to ascertain if sabotage was at play or not.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On Monday, a 10-member team visited the&nbsp;Balasore train accident site and began&nbsp;collecting documents and statements. The investigative body is expected to look at all possible reasons behind the horrific crash which is been dubbed as the deadliest train accident of the millennium.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The agency’s investigators and experts from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) will be collaborating together to scrape the site of evidence.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Sabotage not ruled out by Railways</strong></h2>

<p>Preliminary investigations by the railway have&nbsp;cited a glitch in the track interlocking mechanism that contributed to the crash.&nbsp;Jaya Varma Sinha, Member of Operation and Business Development at the Indian Railways Board on Monday, during a press conference, explained how the events led to India’s deadliest train accident.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Sinha said that the functioning of the interlocking system, prima facie, may have been part of the problem.&nbsp;The railway official said that only Coromandel Express, which was travelling at a speed of around 128 kilometres per hour had an accident with the other two trains involved in the collateral. The passenger trains were supposed to be on the main lines and pass each other without any fuss while the freight train remained stationary on the loop line.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, whether by accident or sabotage, Coromandel Express was put on the loop line where it collided with the goods train that had iron ore. Afterwards, the&nbsp;coaches of the&nbsp;Coromandel Express got derailed and collided with the last three coaches of the Yesvantpur-Howrah Express, which was passing on the other main line.</p>

<p>The officials claimed that the system is both "error proof and tamper proof". Hence, more questions are being raised as to what could have put Coromandel Express on the loop line.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Questions are also being asked of the government if it had put standard safety mechanisms in place. A 2022 report&nbsp;titled 'Derailment in Indian Railways', published by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) had flagged multiple issues that could have led to such an accident.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Families of passengers from Odisha and other states are swarming hospitals in a desperate attempt to learn more about their loved ones. However, finding the corpse in some instances is proving to be quite difficult.</p>

<p>Muhammad Nizamuddin was unable to claim the remains of his grandchildren at the Balasore District Hospital in Odisha.&nbsp;When the Coromandel Express was involved in an accident, Tafsir Ansari, 16, and his brother Tausif, 13, were on board with their father, reported the BBC.</p>

<p>While the father is still missing, pictures of the teenagers and many other victims were projected onto a wall in the hospital with the Tafsir tags 20 and 169 for identification purposes.</p>

<p>The boys' injuries left their facial features deformed, but their grandfather claims he recognised them.</p>

<p>He then made arrangements to travel to Bhubaneswar, the capital of the state, where four hospitals are housing close to 100 unidentified dead, but he was stopped by a representative.</p>

<p>"How is this possible? Do you mean that I won't recognise my grandchildren," a distraught Mr Nizamuddin told the BBC.</p>

<p>He has now been requested to get in touch with Bhubaneswar city officials who are in charge of verifying claims, confirming identifying documents, and taking action to ensure that the body is delivered to the correct family.</p>

<p>"If you go through the photo database, you'll see many of the bodies are damaged beyond recognition. They are also now decomposing," Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation Commissioner Vijay Amruta Kulange told BBC.</p>

<p>He added that "unidentified bodies would be kept at the hospital mortuary for the next 10 days" and that "the government would not hurry to cremate or bury" them in cases where more than one family had claimed a body.</p>

<p>Britain's King Charles III sent a message of condolence to India's President Droupadi Murmu, on Monday, expressing grief over the deadly Odisha train derailment that claimed the lives of at least 275 people and wounded 1,200 others.</p>

<p>In his condolence message, King Charles also recalled memories of his visit to the state of Odisha 43 years ago.</p>

<p>"Both my wife and I have been most profoundly shocked and saddened by the news of such a dreadful accident outside Balasore. I would like to express our deepest possible condolences to the families of all those who have so tragically lost their lives," Charles was quoted as saying in a statement issued by Buckingham Palace.</p>

<p>“I do hope you know what a special place India and the people of India have in our hearts. I have particularly fond memories of visiting Odisha in 1980 and meeting some of its people on that occasion,” the statement added.</p>

<p>"I pray, therefore, that you may be able to convey our most heartfelt prayers and sympathy to all those who have been affected by this appalling tragedy, together with our special thoughts for the people of Odisha," the King said.</p>

<p>A man hailing from the northeastern state of Assam was rescued from under the debris, 48 hours after the deadly triple train accident in India's Odisha.</p>

<p>Despite being trapped without food or water for two days, 35-year-old Dulal Mazumdar from Guwahati managed to survive. He, however, suffered severe injuries during the collision and was thrown into thick bushes next to an upturned coach of the Coromandel Express.&nbsp;</p>

<p>For two days, the rescue workers had rummaged around the wreckage of the three trains to find survivors. However,&nbsp;Mazumdar, seemingly stuck in an improbable spot was missed by all. It was only when the rescue operation was winding down and the focus turned to restoring services on the track that a small group of police personnel heard a feeble voice at around 5:30 pm on Sunday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“We were surprised how a man could be alive after 48 hours of a train accident such as this. We called for help and aided by some social workers, took him to the community centre at Soro. He was administered first aid there, and rushed to the Balasore district headquarters hospital,” a policeman who did not wish to be identified was quoted as saying by HT.&nbsp;</p>

However, it is unclear if they had survived.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“He was in the general compartment of Coromandel Express when the accident happened. He was probably flung off and landed in the bush. It is a miracle that he has survived for two days,” added Dr Subhajit Giri of Balasore district headquarters hospital.</p>

<p>Sinha said that the functioning of the interlocking system, prima facie, may have been part of the problem.</p>

<p>The railway official said that only Coromandal Express, which was travelling at a speed of around 128 kilometre per hour (128 km/h), had an accident. Sinha said the direction, route and signal were set for the Coromandel Express.</p>

<p>She, however, asserted that their finds are preliminary in nature, and a detailed assessment on the issue is awaited.</p>

<p>According to her, the accident took place near Bahanaga Bazar station in Balasore, Odisha, around 7 pm (local time) on Friday.</p>

<p>The crash involved three trains —Yesvantpur-Howrah Superfast Express (12862), Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express (12841), and a goods train.</p>

<p>“The site where the accident happened had two main lines and two loop lines on both sides,” she said.</p>

<p>The main lines were clear for the passage of these superfast trains and the loop lines were occupied by two goods trains.</p>

<h2><strong>Minute-by-minute details </strong></h2>

<p>At 6.40 pm, Coromandel Express left Balasore for Bhadrakh in Odisha. At 6.52 pm, the train approached Bahanaga station after the green signal.</p>

<p>At 6.55 pm, Yesvantpur-Howrah Express, another train which was coming from the other direction on the second line, approached the Bahanaga station.</p>

<p>However, Coromandel Express, which was supposed to continue on the main line, accidentally changed the course and entered the loop line, on which a freight train laden with iron ore was already halted, and hit the goods train.</p>

<p>Due to its full speed, the impact of the collision was very high, leading to the derailment of many coaches of Coromandel Express. A few coaches turned turtle and crashed with the last three coaches of Yesvantpur-Howrah Express, which was passing on the other main line.</p>

<p>“Only one train was involved in the accident, it was the Coromandel Express. The Coromandel Express crashed with the goods train and its coaches went on top of the goods train. It was an iron ore-laden train, a heavy train, therefore the entire impact of the collision was on the train,” she added.</p>

<p>Electronic interlocking is a set up of signal apparatus that avoids conflicting movements between running trains by an arrangement of tracks. Basically, it is a safety measure that stops signals from getting changed in improper sequence.</p>

<p>The officials claimed that the system is both "error proof and tamper proof".</p>

<p>"It is called a fail-safe system, it means that even if it fails, all the signals will turn red and all train operations will stop. Now, as the minister (Ashwini Vaishnaw) said there was a problem with the signalling system. It could be a physical error, whereby someone has done some digging without seeing the cables," Sinha said, PTI news agency reported.</p>

<p>The report stated: "There were shortfalls ranging from 30-100% in inspections by Track Recording Cars required to assess geometrical and structural conditions of railway tracks."&nbsp;</p>

<p>The report mentioned that a total of 422 derailments were attributable to the "Engineering Department", but the major factor responsible for derailment was related to "maintenance of track" (171 cases), which was followed by "deviation of track parameters beyond permissible limits" (156 cases), while&nbsp;the&nbsp;number of derailments attributable to the "Mechanical Department" was 182.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A part of the report read: "The number of accidents attributable to the "Loco Pilots"&nbsp;was 154. "Bad Driving/Over speeding&nbsp;was the major factor responsible for derailments."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Some would argue&nbsp;why prompt actions were not taken.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, the government has been taking steps to improve the infrastructure.&nbsp;The Indian Railway is a 170-year-old system and&nbsp;has seen rapid expansion and modernisation under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's push to boost infrastructure and connectivity in the fast-growing economy.</p>

<p>This year, the government made a record $30 billion capital outlay for the railways, a 50 per cent&nbsp;increase over the previous fiscal year, to upgrade tracks, ease congestion and add new trains.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the recommendations, the report said that Indian Railways should ensure strict adherence to the scheduled timelines for conducting and finalisation of accident inquiries.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The department may develop a strong monitoring mechanism to ensure timely implementation of maintenance activities by adopting fully mechanised methods of track maintenance and improved technologies.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It was also mentioned that Railway Administration must follow the "guiding principles for deployment of RRSK funds" to avoid fund constraints in the area of Priority-I works.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Varma said that she received information just 15 minutes after the accident took place. "I also talked to the TT of Coach AI of the other train Howrah Yesvantpur Express. He told me that he heard a loud abnormal voice from the back. He felt there was some kind of obstruction. Behind the A1 coach, there were two general coaches and the guard's cabin. The two coaches behind A1 detached completely and were thrown off the tracks, while the A1 coach was safe and moved forward," the official also said on Sunday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On Sunday, passenger trains crossed in Balasore just days after India's deadliest train crash killed at least 275 people and injured 1,200 others. A preliminary probe indicated the Coromandel Express, heading to Chennai from Kolkata, moved out of the main track and entered a loop track – a side track used to park trains - crashing into the freight train parked on the loop track.</p>

<p>That crash caused the engine and the first few coaches of the Coromandel Express to jump the tracks, topple and hit the last two coaches of the Yeshwantpur-Howrah train heading in the opposite direction on the second main track.</p>

<p>Speaking to the news agency Reuters, a railways officer said that trains are required to control their speed and proceed slowly for a certain distance. Earlier, the railways had said that the failure of the track management system was the main focus of the investigation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The railways on Sunday sought a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the Balasore train crash with officials indicating that possible "sabotage" and tampering with the electronic interlocking system, which detects the presence of trains, led to the accident.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We have recommended a CBI probe into the triple train accident," Railways Minister Ashwini Yadav said, adding the "root cause" of the accident and the people behind the "criminal" act were identified.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Indian Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw on Sunday, while speaking about the triple train tragedy which took place in Odisha's Balasore, said that the Railway Board has recommended a CBI probe into the accident.</p>

<p>“Taking into consideration the situation in which this accident took place, the Railway Board had recommended a CBI investigation into the matter,” the minister said.</p>

<p>He added, “Rescue was completed and restoration work is underway. Work-related to track is done and overhead wiring work is going on. Patients are being treated at hospitals.”</p>

<p>“The railways along with the state governments is trying to contact the families of the people who were involved in that unfortunate incident from different parts of the country,” the minister stated.</p>

<h2><strong>Electronic interlocking cause of the accident: Minister</strong></h2>

<p>Earlier in the day, minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that the tragic train accident occurred because of a "change in electronic interlocking".</p>

<p>Electronic interlocking is a set up of signal apparatus that avoids conflicting movements between running trains by an arrangement of tracks. Basically, it is a safety measure that stops signals from getting changed in improper sequence.</p>

<p>"This is a different issue. It is about a point machine, electronic interlocking. The change that occurred during electronic interlocking, the accident happened due to that. Whoever did it and how it happened will be found out after proper investigation,” the minister stated.</p>

<p>He added that the officials are carrying out restoration work and normalcy is expected to be restored before Wednesday morning.</p>

<p>"The commissioner of railway safety has investigated the matter and it won't be right for me to comment on that. Let the investigation report come. But the cause of the accident has been identified and the people responsible for it have been identified. Right now our focus is on restoration. There are two main lines and two loop lines. The work is underway and we will definitely complete restoration well before our target of Wednesday morning," Vaishnaw stated.</p>

<p>Mizan Ul Haq, a resident of Bardhaman in West Bengal state, was in one of the coaches at the rear of the train.</p>

<p>"The train was running at a high speed. Around 7 pm, a loud sound was heard and everything started moving in all directions. I fell down on the floor from the upper berth as the lights went off inside the compartment," Haq, who was returning home from work in Karnataka on a holiday, told Press Trust of India (PTI).</p>

<p>He said that somehow, he managed to come out of the damaged coach.</p>

<p>"It was ghastly, many people with grave injuries were lying around beside mangled coaches," Haq, who was lucky to have escaped with minor injuries, told PTI at Howrah station, where medical aid, food and other assistance were provided by the railway authorities to the surviving passengers.</p>

<p>Rekha, a Bengaluru resident coming to Kolkata for a visit, said that she was in a coach ahead of the wagons that got derailed.</p>

<p>"It was total chaos initially. We got off our compartment out of fear and sat in the nearby fields in the darkness till our train finally started for Howrah in the wee hours," she said.</p>

<p>Another Bardhaman resident, a carpenter who works in Bengaluru, said he was injured in the chest, feet and head when the coach in which he was travelling turned turtle.</p>

<p>"We had to break open the windows and jump out of the compartment to save ourselves," he said, adding he saw many dead bodies after the accident.</p>
