Separately, the governor of the Dnipropetrovsk region said a 47-year-old woman was killed during a Russian missile attack on the central city of Kryvyi Rig, the hometown of President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The Ukrainian air force said that in total Russia had launched three missiles at the war-battered country overnight as well as 133 drones of various types, including the Iranian-designed Shahed-type attack drone.
Its air defence units shot down 98 of the drones, the air force added.

Kyiv: Four killed in Russian strike at Ukraine’s Odesa port

Ukraine claimed on Monday (September 25) that Russia launched a major aerial attack on southern Ukraine overnight, hitting Odesa port and destroying grain stores.&nbsp;

The southern Odesa port region in Ukraine witnessed fresh flare-ups overnight after Russia launched its second attack in two nights in ports, damaging warehouses, production buildings and industrial enterprises.

Governor of Odesa Oleg Kiper on Monday (Sept 4) said that Moscow launched drone attacks on the city which lasted for more than three hours.

The Ukrainian Air Force retaliated and shot down 17 drones, Oleg Kiper wrote on Telegram, adding, "But, unfortunately, there are also hits. In several settlements of Izmail district, warehouses and production buildings, agricultural machinery and equipment of industrial enterprises were damaged."

<h2>Civilians told to remain indoors</h2>

Several fires also broke out in civilian residences due to falling debris, he said, but they had since been put out. There were no deaths or injuries.

Odesa is one of Ukraine’s two major grain-exporting ports on the Danube River in the south of the region.

The Ukrainian ports, which export around a quarter of the world’s grain demands, have been increasingly subjected to Russian attacks ever since President Vladimir Putin pulled out of the deal brokered by the UN and Turkey that had allowed Kyiv to export its grain via its Black Sea ports.

This is the second attack in two nights. A day earlier, Russia attacked the Danube port of Reni. The defence ministry in Moscow said the drones had struck fuel depots used by the Ukrainian military.

Meanwhile, Russia’s defence ministry has claimed it destroyed four US-made Ukrainian military boats carrying landing troops in the Black Sea.

In a Telegram post, the ministry claimed the Willard Marine Sea Force inflatable boats were heading towards Cape Tarkhankut on the Crimean peninsula.

The fresh assault comes just hours ahead of a meeting between Russian president Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at which the Turk is expected to push to revive the deal.

The city's civilian and military administrations took a joint decision to open beaches, according to Odesa Governor Oleh Kiper who wrote on Telegram app.

Kiper said the beaches would remain open from 8 am to 8 pm.

Reuters quoted Oleksandr, a lifeguard and a former diver, who said that anti-mine net was placed in between two piers to prevent swimmers encountering shallow-water mines.

"The net will stop them. And they (mines) will also be visible from the shore under such weather conditions. Emergency workers will be notified, they will come to handle it," he said.

The opening of the beaches has been a welcome respite from the war for people swimming and sunbathing.

"I have been dreaming of going to the beach and inhaling salty air. We have been missing it a lot. But safety is a top priority," said Svitlana, a resident of the Odesa region.

<h2>Russia claims downing 20 Ukrainian drones</h2>

Meanwhile, Russia said on Saturday that it had shot down 20 unmanned Ukrainian drones near the Crimean peninsula. The Russian defence ministry said on Telegram messaging service that 14 drones were downed by air defence systems and six more were shot down using electronic warfare.

Governor of Kaluga region, about 150 kilometres southwest of Moscow said that a drone was also intercepted in the region.&nbsp;

On Friday officials in Moscow said that they had destroyed a drone that was targetting the Russian capital. The attack was latest in series of attacks on Moscow in recent days.

In July, Ukrainian drone strikes on Crimea blew up an ammunition depot and damaged the bridge across the Kerch Strait linking the peninsula to Russia's mainland.

Crimea was annexed by Russia in 2014.

In Ukraine, Russian attacks on Saturday killed a policeman and injured 12 other people in the southern Zaporizhzhia region.

A man was also killed in the Kharkiv region, according to local authorities.

As reported by news agency Reuters, Serhiy Bratchuk, who is the spokesperson for the Odesa military administration, said in a voice message on his Telegram channel on Wednesday that the attack was "very powerful, truly massive". He added that "it was a hellish night". Bratchuk said that details on damage and casualties would come later.&nbsp;

Odesa's mayor said that the Russian aerial assault was "one of the most horrible nights" of the war. Mayor Hennadii Trukhanov said on Facebook: "We do not recall such a scale of attack since the beginning of a full-scale invasion."&nbsp;
