The 30-share Sensex rallied 301.55 points, or 0.90 per cent, to 33,608.69 in opening trade. The index had lost 44.43 points in the previous session on Friday.

All the sectoral indices, led by IT, Teck, oil &amp; gas, FMCG and realty sectors, were trading in the green with gains up to 1.24 per cent.

The broader NSE Nifty rose 96.10 points, or 0.93 per cent, to 10,322.95.

Major gainers were ITC, Tata Steel, Sun Pharma, Infosys, Wipro, Adani Ports, Bharti Airtel, HDFC, RIL, IndusInd Bank, M&amp;M and L&amp;T, rising up to 2.74.

Meanwhile, SBI dropped nearly 1 per cent to Rs 250.80.

The rupee too appreciated against the US dollar in opening trade.

On a net basis, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) bought shares worth Rs 550.36 crore while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) sold shares worth Rs 65.00 crore on Friday, provisional data showed.

However, Gitanjali Gems remained under selling pressure and traded 4.82 per cent lower at Rs 15.80.

Banking stocks led by SBI, ICICI Bank, Bank of Baroda, PNB, Kotak Bank, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, Federal Bank and Yes Bank fell as much as 2.77 per cent.

The sentiment was further dampened after the RBI yesterday said it had imposed a penalty of Rs 3 crore on Axis Bank for violation of NPA classification norms and Rs 2 crore on Indian Overseas Bank for not complying with the KYC regulations.

The 30-share index Sensex commenced on a strong note at 34,047.43 and advanced to a high of 34,060.13, tracking a firm trend in other Asian markets.&nbsp;

Shares of Punjab National Bank today slumped as much as 9 per cent to hit their 52-week low level in morning trade on bourses after the lender said the amount of fraudulent transactions could be as much as Rs 12,700 crore.

The&nbsp;company&#39;s shares opened weak at Rs 107.80, then cracked 8.75 per cent to a 52-week low of Rs 102.10 on the BSE.

Similar movement was seen on the NSE too, where the stock opened at Rs 106.80, then fell to its 52-week low of Rs 102, down 8.92 per cent over its previous close.

Amid the multi-agency probe into the PNB scam, the state-run bank yesterday said the amount of fraudulent transactions could be Rs 1,300 crore more than the current estimate of about Rs 11,400 crore.

On February 14, the bank had detected the fraud wherein billionaire jeweller Nirav Modi and associates had allegedly acquired fraudulent letters of undertaking (LoUs) from one of the branches of the PNB for overseas credit from other Indian lenders.

&quot;We have to inform that quantum of reported unauthorised transactions can increase by&nbsp;$204.25 million (approximately),&quot; the filing said.

At the current exchange rate, the amount comes to around Rs 1,323 crore.&nbsp;

Brokers said investors were creating fresh positions at the start of March futures and options (F&amp;O) series, that led to a recovery in the market.

Major gainers include Sun Pharma, Tata Steel, Bharti Airtel, Dr Reddy&#39;s, Yes Bank, Tata Motors, SBI, Wipro and NTPC, rising up to 3.09 per cent.

Indian shares fell for a fifth straight session on Monday, with the broader NSE index hitting its lowest in a month, as Asian shares slumped, while worries remained that the Reserve Bank of India would turn more hawkish at its policy meeting later this week.

Investors remained concerned that the government widened its fiscal deficit target for the year starting in April to help finance higher spending in rural sectors and healthcare.

The government also imposed a 10 percent long-term capital gains tax for equity investments of more than one year, raising concerns about investors` risk appetite after Indian shares went on a record-setting spree last month.

Government officials have tried to downplay the impact of the tax. Finance and Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia told a post-budget conference organised by an industry lobby group that the rate was &quot;nominal&quot; and India remained a favourable market. He instead attributed the recent selloff in the markets to global cues.

&quot;It is very unfortunate that our move came at a very wrong time because of global markets also going down,&quot; he said.

Asian shares fell the most in more than a year on Monday as fears of resurgent inflation battered bonds globally, and toppled Wall Street from record highs. The MSCI`s index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan shed as much as 2 percent in its largest intraday drop since late 2016.&nbsp;

But bonds in India turned relatively more stable, with the benchmark 10-year bond yield rising 2 basis points to 7.58 percent after posting its biggest weekly rise since February 2017 last week.&nbsp;

The rupee was trading at 64.0325/0375 per dollar, compared with Friday`s close of 64.07.

&quot;Disappointments include budget provisions and lack of buying on small- and mid-caps, even at lower levels. Expect RBI to maintain the rates and its cautious tone during the policy meet this week,&quot; said Deepak Jasani, head of retail research at HDFC Securities.&nbsp;

The NSE Nifty was down 0.84 percent at 10,670.20 as of 0746 GMT, after declining as much as 1.62 percent to its lowest level since Jan 5.

The benchmark BSE index was 0.86 percent lower at 34,766.63, after dropping as much as 1.56 percent.

Both indexes were down for a fifth straight session, in what could be their longest losing streak since September 2017.

The losses were led by index heavyweight Housing Development Finance Corp, which was trading 3 percent lower.

Meanwhile, Bharti Airtel Ltd climbed as much as 5 percent after Singapore Telecommunications Ltd said it would raise stake in Bharti Telecom, the holding company for India`s biggest mobile carrier.

The 30-scrip Sensitive Index (Sensex), was trading 157.21 points or 0.44 per cent higher soon after opening.

The wider 50-scrip Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) was also trading 46.25 points or 0.42 per cent higher at 11,073.95 points.

1. Tepid earnings from frontline stocks.&nbsp;

2. Global oil prices moving up to a 3-year high.&nbsp;

3. Major indices moving into the `expensive&#39; zone based on price-earning ratios. Thousands of crores of rupees moving into a select few stocks and pushing their prices to stratospheric levels.&nbsp;

4. The so-called penny stocks - which have dodgy managements -- have surged sharply as newbie investors bought into their `relative low prices&#39; in a bid to ride the bull-run.&nbsp;

5. Rising inflation and consequently little or no chance of interest rates moving lower.

6. Foreign ownership of frontline stocks reducing in favour of domestic institutions. Although, this is not a bad thing in the longer run. Ideally, Indian portfolio investors should have higher stakes in bluechip companies compared with overseas investors.

7. The demand for virtual assets like cryptocurrencies, which are purely speculative and have no underlying economic rationale, has shot through the roof. The bubble seems to have seen a mild puncture there.&nbsp;

8. The banking NPA problem is far from over.

9. Lastly and, most importantly, celebrations of the market hitting record levels are seen everywhere. They are on the front page of every newspaper, financial website. Talk about what to invest in and what to buy is dominating drawing rooms and everyone wants to get his/her financial portfolio checked with a so-called expert to see if s/he hasn&#39;t `missed&#39; the rally. I myself get several calls a day.

So, if things are so bad, why are the markets rising the way they are? What prompts a 1,000-point increase in the Sensex to beyond 35,000 in less than 16 sessions?

Well, here are the things that are going well for our markets:

1. There is a larger shift towards financial assets as savers move money away from fixed deposits, real estate and gold purchases. This rising tide of liquidity into the market is propelling prices and valuations higher. In the longer term, this is the best thing that is happening. Equity ownership is a minuscule 2 percent in India.&nbsp;

2. Investors believe eventually the economic steps being taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi will bear fruit even if they deliver short term pain.

3. The advent of Goods and Services Tax will change the business landscape of India, delivering a tax bonanza for the government.

4.&nbsp; Top flight Indian companies are among the very best in the world when it comes to financial prudence, marketing skills and a deep management bandwidth.

5. While Indian markets themselves may be on shaky ground, they are among the top tier globally: to borrow a phrase from traders: India is a good girl on a bad street!&nbsp;

So, coming back to the moot point: how should you make money without burning your fingers? Well, here is a prudent financial plan:

1. Don&#39;t buy individual stocks. Chances of a strong correction are high and that could wipe out 20 percent of your capital in a very short while.

2. Buy a simple equity diversified fund. Do not go in for a sectoral fund.

3. Invest piecemeal: go in for monthly investments in an equity fund. Start a SIP.

4. Don&#39;t invest through a bank or an advisor. Their cut will reduce your overall earnings.

5. Choose the direct route of approaching a fund&#39;s website and go for the &#39;growth option&#39; in an equity diversified fund.

6. Lastly, have modest expectations for return: we are already in the 7th year of this bull run.

Opinion: Beware! Stocks at a new high, so is risk

BSE Sensex jumped 394.88 points in early trade today to a fresh all-time high of 35,476.70.

The Nifty too scaled new record of 10,887.10.

On Wednesday, the Benchmark Sensex had scaled 311 points on government&#39;s decision to cut planned market borrowing amount for the current fiscal and global cues including Dow Jones which has hit a record run.

The Sensex closed above the 35,000-mark for the first time ever, while the broader Nifty too ended at a fresh life-time high on unabated buying by participants.

The broader Nifty had surged 88.10 points on Wednesday to close at a new peak of 10,788.55, breaking its previous record of 10,741.55 hit on January 15.

BSE Sensex jumped 394.88 points in early trade today to a fresh all-time high of 35,476.70. The Nifty too scaled new record of 10,887.10. On Wednesday, the Benchmark Sensex had scaled 311 points on government's decision to cut planned market borrowing amount for the current fiscal and global cues including Dow Jones which has hit a record run. The Sensex closed above the 35,000-mark for the first time ever, while the broader Nifty too ended at a fresh life-time high on unabated buying by participants. The broader Nifty had surged 88.10 points on Wednesday to close at a new peak of 10,788.55, breaking its previous record of 10,741.55 hit on January 15.

Sensex, Nifty at record high in early trade

The benchmark Sensex on Monday zoomed over 209 points to scale the new peak of 34,801.74 points on the back of positive macroeconomic data and encouraging corporate earnings amid gains in other Asian markets.&nbsp;

The broader NSE Nifty also soared to a new high of 10,733.40 by gaining 52.15 points or 0.48 per cent. It broke its previous intra-day record of 10,690.40 hit on January 12.&nbsp;

The 30-share Sensex gained 209.35 points, or 0.60 per cent, to touch an all-time high of 34,801.74, surpassing the previous record of 34,638.42 (intra-day) reached on January 12.&nbsp;

Reflecting the bullish mood, all the sectoral indices, led by realty, banking and power were trading in the positive zone with gains up to 1.01 per cent.&nbsp;

Brokers said buying activity picked up momentum on positive economic data as industrial production growth in November zoomed to a 17-month high of 8.4 per cent on the back of robust performance of manufacturing and capital goods sectors.&nbsp;

Shares of Infosys, India&#39;s second largest IT exporter, was trading higher by 0.33 per cent at Rs 1,082, reacting to Q3 earnings.&nbsp;

The IT major on Friday reported a 38.3 per cent growth in consolidated net profit at Rs 5,129 crore for the October- December quarter and maintained its FY 2017-18 sales growth outlook at 5.5-6.5 per cent in constant currency terms.&nbsp;

Other prominent gainers that lifted the key indices to new highs include ICICI Bank, Tata Steel, HDFC Ltd, SBI, Power Grid, Reliance Industries, Wipro, NTPC, M&amp;M, TCS, ITC Ltd, Coal India and Tata Motors, gaining up to 3.42 per cent.&nbsp;

Among other Asian markets, Japan&#39;s Nikkei rose 0.23 per cent while Hong Kong&#39;s Hang Seng was up 0.59 per cent in early trade. China&#39;s Shanghai Composite index, however, was down 0.05 per cent.&nbsp;

The US Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at a new high by surging 0.89 per cent in Friday&#39;s trade. &nbsp;

Traders said sentiment remained upbeat on continuous foreign fund inflows and unabated buying by investors amid expectations of encouraging quarterly earnings and hopes of the growth-oriented budget next month.&nbsp;

Firm global cues with most other Asian markets rising with the corporate earnings season about to kick off amid more records on Wall Street, too positively impacted on the domestic bourses here.&nbsp;

India&#39;s economic growth is estimated to slow down to 4- year low of 6.5 per cent this fiscal, the lowest under the NDA regime, mainly due to GST impact on manufacturing and subdued farm output.&nbsp;

The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was 7.1 per cent in 2016-17 and 8 per cent in the preceding year. It was 7.5 per cent in 2014-15.&nbsp;

The benchmark Sensex reclaimed the 34,000-mark by surging over 100 points in early trade today on sustained buying by participants amid a firm trend in other Asian markets.

The 30-share index rose 100.48 points, or 0.29 per cent, to 34,070.12, with all sectoral indices led by PSU, consumer durables, auto and metal trading in the positive zone, rising by up to 0.57 per cent.

The gauge had gained 176.26 points in the previous session.

The NSE index Nifty too edged higher by 29.45 points, or 0.28 per cent, to 10,534.25.

Brokers said improved liquidity in the market following continuous foreign fund inflows and increased buying by domestic institutional investors after the government moved forward on its bank recapitalisation programme boosted trading sentiments.

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) bought shares worth a net of Rs 212.05 crore, while Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) made purchases worth a Rs 325.24 crore yesterday, as per provisional exchange data.

Prominent gainers in the Sensex kitty were Yes Bank, Bharti Airtel, Adani Ports, SBI, Tata Steel, ITC Ltd, IndusInd Bank, Coal India, TCS, HDFC Ltd and Kotak Bank, gaining by up to 1.86 per cent.

The rupee appreciating to over 2-1/2 year high of 63.31 against the dollar (intra-day) and positive leads from other Asian bourses, led to a better trend in the domestic market here.

Expectations of encouraging third quarterly earnings from blue-chip companies, to be released next week too influenced sentiment. 
Among other Asian markets, Japan&#39;s Nikkei was trading higher by 0.18 per cent, while Hong Kong&#39;s Hang Seng rose 0.51 per cent in their early deals. The Shanghai Composite index too was up by 0.07 per cent.

The US Dow Jones Industrial Average continued its record-setting run by ending 0.61 per cent higher in yesterday&#39;s trade.

The 30-share index rose 100.48 points, or 0.29 per cent, to 34,070.12, with all sectoral indices led by PSU, consumer durables, auto and metal trading in the positive zone, rising by up to 0.57 per cent.

Sensex builds on gains, regains 34,000 mark in early trade

Benchmark Sensex reversed a three-session slide to end at 33,970 today after the government moved forward on its bank recapitalisation programme.

Investors also took heart from upbeat macro indicators and firm global cues, brokers said.

The gauge had lost 263.45 points in the previous three sessions.

The NSE 50-share Nifty also closed higher by 61.60 points, or 0.59 per cent, at 10,504.80 after shuttling between 10,513 and 10,441.45.

&quot;Positive global cues and improvement in services PMI data for December helped the market move out of the subdued phase of trading.

Asian bourses displayed a firm trend, led by Japan which began the first trading of 2018 on a strong footing. European markets opened higher.

Back home, Tata Steel was the biggest gainer in the Sensex kitty, rising 3.74 per cent, followed by Dr Reddy&#39;s, which advanced 3.14 per cent.

Other gainers were L&amp;T, ONGC, Asian Paints, Sun Pharma, Coal India, SBI, IndusInd Bank, Bharti Airtel, TCS, Bajaj Auto, Reliance Industries, Yes Bank, Adani Ports, HDFC Ltd and HDFC Bank, rising by up to 3.08 per cent.

Among the sectoral indices, metal climbed 2.77 per cent, consumer durables 2.53 per cent, capital goods 2.11 per cent, PSU 1.55 per cent, infrastructure 1.03 per cent, healthcare 0.99 per cent, oil and gas 0.80 per cent, bankex 0.51 per cent and power 0.33 per cent.

The broader markets continued to outperform the benchmark. The BSE small-cap and mid-cap indices rose by 0.88 per cent and 0.71 per cent, respectively.

Globally, Asian stocks ended higher as soaring oil prices helped energy firms post bumper gains, following more records on Wall Street.

Japan&#39;s Nikkei rose 3.26 per cent, Hong Kong&#39;s Hang Seng gained 0.57 per cent and Shanghai Composite Index was up 0.49 per cent. In Europe, Frankfurt&#39;s DAX rose 0.94 per cent, while Paris gained 0.85 per cent. London FTSE was up 0.15 per cent.
