Sentiment got another jolt after Moody's Investors Service downgraded PNB's rating, citing the impact of recent fraud on its capital as well as weak internal controls, brokers said.

The 30-share Sensex had soared about 126 points to hit a high of 34,973.95 in early trade but gave up its gains following a widespread sell-off, which dragged it down to 34,593.82.

The gauge finally ended at a nearly one-month low of 34,616.13, down 232.17 points or 0.67 per cent. This is its weakest closing since April 25 when it had finished at 34,501.60.

It had lost 708.41 points in the previous four sessions.

The broader NSE Nifty closed lower by 79.70 points, or 0.75 per cent, at 10,516.70, after hovering between 10,621.70 and 10,505.80.

The laggards were ICICI Bank, HDFC, SBI, Axis Bank, Bharti Airtel and Adani Ports, falling up to 1.46 per cent.

However, IT stocks spurted after the rupee depreciated against the dollar. TCS rose 0.86 per cent, Infosys 0.59 per cent and Wipro 0.06 per cent.

Meanwhile, investors digested last week's trade talks between the US and China in Beijing, where consensus emerged on some issues.

The 30-share Sensex rose by 146.18 points, or 0.41 per cent, to 35,061.56 in early trade. The gauge had lost 261.04 points in the previous two sessions.

All the sectoral indices, led by consumer durables, realty, IT, teck and banking, were trading in the green with gains of up to 1.56 per cent.

The broad-based NSE Nifty too rose by 41.55 points or 0.39 per cent to 10,659.80.

Major gainers that supported the recovery were M&M, Bharti Airtel, Bajaj Auto, Infosys, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, Wipro, Kotak Bank, ONGC, ITC, Tata Steel, SBI, RIL, Tata Motors, L&T and Yes Bank, rising up to 1.76 per cent.

IT stocks outperformed the benchmark index Sensex in April driven by the sharp jump in TCS, and going forward the outlook for the tech sector looks bullish owing to a weak rupee and increasing adoption of digital platforms.

On BSE, the IT index ended the month of April with 10.71 per cent gain, while for the 30-share index the gain was 6.64 per cent.

S&P BSE Information Technology index was quoted at 13,567.69 on April 30, significantly higher than its April 2 value of 12,254.92 points.

The latest gains were led by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) whose shares marked new heights during April. Shares of TCS - the most valued company in the country - jumped as much as 24 per cent and also scaled the USD 100 billion landmark market capitalisation mark during the month.

Other blue-chip IT companies also ended the month on a strong note. Infosys, India's second-largest software services firm soared 5.72 per cent, HCL Technologies (8.44 per cent), Tech Mahindra (5.20 per cent).

IT stocks have the second biggest sectoral weight in the benchmark indices, after banking. The strong performance of tech stocks during April helped Sensex gain 6.64 per cent during the month.

Given that the weak rupee augurs well for the IT pack, brokerages are upbeat on the IT sector.

According to a Nomura report, the rupee has started to depreciate since the start of 2018 by near 4 per cent so far this year.

"IT has already materially outperformed Nifty in this period of rupee depreciation," Nomura said adding that "theoretically, companies with lower margin profiles and higher offshore components are likely to benefit from rupee depreciation".

Edelweiss Research in a note on IT earnings said: "Our analysis reveals that with acceleration in revenue and digital gaining scale, double-digit earnings growth will soon become a reality".

It further said: "We reiterate our structural bullish call on sector led by falling proportion of low-growth business being replaced by high-growth digital business".

Meanwhile, Elara Capital in a report said large-scale mutual fund allocations moved into the financial sector post-2014 while MF ownership in IT remains closer to the two-decade low.

"Now the AUM ratio has reached close to 2008 highs from where reversal has begun. Any large reversals will significantly benefit IT, which remains the largest under-allocated sector among local MF. In the past, the reversal from such high zone has brought about a big round of outperformance in IT," Elara Capital said.

IT stocks outperform Sensex in April; TCS jumps 24%

Indian shares hit a near three-month high on Monday, in tandem with global markets, as technology shares gained and lenders rose on expectation of strong numbers from Housing Development Finance Corp and Kotak Mahindra Bank later in the day.

Gains were, however, capped as index heavyweight Reliance Industries Ltd fell as much as much as 3.5 percent, its biggest percentage loss since February&nbsp;2, after the result from the oil-to-retail conglomerate's telecoms arm Jio failed to cheer.

Asian shares extended gains as tensions in the Korean Peninsula eased and first-quarter earnings shone, even though some investors were cautious about the outlook amid the backdrop of a simmering US-China trade dispute.

"We're following the global trend, and there has not been any major disappointment in the domestic earnings season," said Sumit Pokharna, deputy vice president, Kotak Securities.

There is some profit-booking in Reliance, plus the market was anticipating much better numbers from Jio, he added.

The broader NSE Nifty was up 0.50 percent at 10,745.75, with State Bank of India and Yes Bank, up 2.6 percent and 2 percent respectively, leading the gains.

The benchmark BSE Sensex was 0.57 percent higher at 35,167.75. Both the indexes hit their highest levels since Feb 2 and were poised to end the month higher after two consecutive months of losses.

IT stocks rose, with the Nifty IT index gaining as much as 2.3 percent aided by the recent weakness in the rupee.

Reliance dragged the Nifty Energy index, which was down as much as 2.1 percent, its biggest intraday percentage loss in over a month.

Bond and currency markets are closed on Monday and Tuesday for a public holiday. Stock markets will remain shut on Tuesday.

Sensex hits near three-month high; IT stocks, lenders gain

Benchmark indices closed higher following positive global cues and the correction in crude oil prices.

The 30-share BSE Sensex was up 190.66 points at 35,160.36 and the 50-share NSE Nifty gained 47.10 points at 10,739.40.

About 1,397 shares advanced against 1,262 declining shares on the BSE.

Nifty Midcap was up 0.8 percent.

Benchmark Sensex vaulted over 212 points today, riding on a stellar show by Yes Bank, as investors piled into consumption, IT and banking counters amid encouraging earnings.

Yes Bank was the top performer in the 30-share Sensex pack, surging 8.26 per cent, after the private lender reported a 29 per cent jump in its net profit (standalone) at Rs 1,179.40 crore for the March quarter. 
Covering up of pending short positions by speculators on expiry of the April derivatives contracts added to the momentum, brokers said.

The BSE Sensex took off on a positive note at 34,532.95 and advanced to the day's high of 34,747.97 before ending at 34,713.60, up 212.33 points, or 0.62 per cent.

This is its highest closing since February 5, when it had finished at 34,757.16.

The 50-issue NSE Nifty ended at 10,617.80, up 47.25 points, or 0.45 per cent, after shuttling between 10,628.40 and 10,559.65.

Meanwhile, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought shares worth Rs 435.98 crore, while foreign portfolio investors sold to the tune of Rs 304.79 crore yesterday, provisional data showed. 
Globally, there was a mixed trend in Asia and a higher opening in Europe as robust corporate earnings helped Wall Street calm concerns over the surge in US bond yields.

"Market surged in the closing hours of the F&O expiry day led by private banks on account of earnings positivity. IT stocks continued the positive momentum but PSU banks continued to be major laggards.

"Global markets were mixed ahead of the ECB interest rate decision scheduled today but the earnings positivity in the US kept the investors interested despite a further rise in crude price and soaring bond yields," said Anand James, Chief Market Strategist, Geojit Financial Services.

Other Sensex gainers included HUL 2.17 per cent, TCS 2.09 per cent, ITC 1.61 per cent, Kotak Bank 1.41 per cent, Adani Ports 1.38 per cent, Infosys 1.27 per cent, IndusInd Bank 1.11 per cent, Hero MotoCorp 1.02 per cent, ONGC 0.89 per cent, HDFC Bank 0.68 per cent, M&M 0.63 per cent, Tata Motors 0.50 per cent, RIL 0.48 per cent, HDFC 0.36 per cent, Maruti Suzuki 0.29 per cent and NTPC 0.26 per cent.

However, Wipro shed 2 per cent after disappointing Q4 numbers. 
Other losers were Bharti Airtel, falling 2.61 per cent, followed by Dr Reddy's 2.09 per cent, SBI 1.71 per cent, Tata Steel 1.22 per cent, L&T 0.94 per cent, Coal India 0.62 per cent, Bajaj Auto 0.48 per cent, Asian Paints 0.46 per cent and Sun Pharma 0.34 per cent.

Among BSE sectoral indices, FMCG rose 1.25 per cent, IT 1.17 per cent, banking 0.86 per cent, teck 0.59 per cent, consumer durables 0.43 per cent, auto 0.33 per cent, metal 0.12 per cent and oil and gas 0.07 per cent.

On the other hand, realty fell 0.77 per cent, capital goods 0.51 per cent, PSU 0.36 per cent, healthcare 0.15 per cent and infrastructure 0.13 per cent.

The S&P BSE Small-Cap index rose 0.25 per cent, while the Mid-Cap index lost 0.02 per cent.

In global markets, oil prices rose on geopolitical concerns. Brent crude oil futures were trading higher at USD 74.53 per barrel while WTI crude oil traded at USD 68.41 per barrel.

Asian markets ended on a mixed note as investors digested the latest quarterly corporate earnings. In US, the Dow Jones industrial average closed higher for the first time in six sessions yesterday.

Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 index climbed 0.47 per cent and Singapore edged up 0.06 per cent, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng lost 1.06 per and the Shanghai Composite in mainland China declined 1.38 per cent.

European shares were higher in early trade.

Sensex soars as investors say 'Yes' to banks, FMCG

The benchmark BSE Sensex started on a negative note, shedding over 100 points today, on weak global cues and rupee depreciation against the US dollar.

The 30-share index dropped 105.53 points, or 0.30 per cent, to 34,511.11. The gauge had gained 201.06 points in the previous two sessions.

Similarly, the NSE Nifty fell below the 10,600 mark, shedding 25.85 points, or 0.24 per cent, to 10,588.50.

Major losers were NTPC, Dr Reddy's, ONGC, Tata Steel, Asian Paint and Sun Pharma, falling up to 1.29 per cent.

Sectoral indices led by power, banking, capital goods, realty, IT, PSU and metal stocks were trading in the negative zone, falling up to 0.82 per cent.

On the other hand, Bharti Airtel was the biggest Sensex gainer, rising nearly 3 per cent.&nbsp;

The company, along with Idea Cellular and Vodafone Group, today announced an agreement for the merger of Indus Towers and Bharti Infratel to create the largest mobile tower operator in the world outside China with over 163,000 towers across 22 telecom service areas.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Airtel, however, reported its lowest quarterly net profit in at least 14 years yesterday.

Other gainers were Wipro, TCS, Adani Ports, Infosys and RIL, rising up to 1.90 per cent.

Brokers said sentiment turned weak on sustained capital outflows by foreign funds amid a weak trend in other Asian markets following overnight weakness at Wall Street after the 10-year treasury yield briefly touched the 3 per cent level for the first time in four years.

Meanwhile, on a net basis, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) sold shares worth Rs 680.99 crore, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought shares worth Rs 508.55 crore yesterday, provisional data showed.

In the Asian region, Japan's Nikkei fell 0.65 per cent, Hong Kong's Hang Seng shed 1.07 per cent in early trade. China's Shanghai Composite index too was down 0.59 per cent.

Sensex sheds 115 points on weak global cues, profit-booking

Shares marked their highest close since February 5 on Tuesday as gains in financial and energy stocks helped lift the mood, but aluminium producers such as Hindalco Industries Ltd capped the gains on the NSE.

The benchmark BSE Sensex closed up 0.48 percent at 34,616.64. The broader Nifty ended 0.28 percent higher at 10,614.35.

An appreciating rupee, unabated buying by domestic institutional investors (DIIs) and encouraging earnings by blue-chips contributed to the uptrend, brokers said.

Overseas, Asian markets closed mostly higher even as oil prices crossed USD 75 a barrel, the highest level since November 2014.

The BSE 30-share Sensex took off on a positive note at 34,491.38 and advanced to the day's high of 34,706.71 before ending at 34,616.64, up 165.87 points, or 0.48 per cent.

The gauge had gained 35.19 points in the previous session.

The benchmark BSE Sensex declined by about 80 points in early session today, in tandem with weak global cues amid rupee's plunge below the 66 mark.

Besides, the release of the minutes of last Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting on April 4-5, indicating the Reserve Bank of India may shift to a hawkish monetary stance in June, weighed on investor sentiment.

The 30-share index, which had gained 95.61 points in yesterday's session, was quoting lower by 79.95 points, or 0.23 per cent, at 34,347.34, with metal, banking, realty, FMCG, power and PSU stocks leading the fall.

Similarly, the NSE Nifty fell 25.20 points, or 0.24 per cent, to 10,540.10.

Brokers said, besides continued capital outflows by foreign funds, profit-booking in recent gainers, rupee's fall below the 66-mark against the dollar and higher global crude oil prices, hurt trading sentiments.

Bucking the trend, shares of the country's largest software exporter TCS climbed 3.81 per cent, to Rs 3,312.30 after the company yesterday reported a 4.4 per cent growth in its consolidated net profit at Rs 6,904 crore for the March 2018 quarter and its board recommended a 1:1 bonus share issue.

Laggards were Tata Steel, Asian Paint, ITC, SBI, Axis Bank, HDFC, Sun Pharma, Yes Bank, IndusInd Bank, Power Grid, Bajaj Auto, Hero MotoCorp, M&M and RIL, falling by up to 1.39 per cent.

Meanwhile, foreign funds sold shares worth Rs 624.99 crore in yesterday's trade, provisional data showed.

The 30-share Sensex opened positive and advanced to a high of 33,505.53 but succumbed to a sudden sell-off in the afternoon, hitting a low of 32,972.56. It finally ended 351.56 points or 1.05 per cent down at 33,019.07.

This is the benchmark's biggest fall since March 23, when it had lost 409.73 points.

The broader NSE Nifty, after scaling the day's high of 10,279.85, slipped into the negative terrain to 10,111.30 before closing at 10,128.40, down by 116.60 points, or 1.14 per cent.

The domestic stock market started the new fiscal on a positive note today, with the flagship Sensex rising about 287 points to end above the key 33,000-level as index heavyweights RIL, Tata Motors and Maruti led the rally.

The Sensex after a gap-up opening to regain the 33,000-mark advanced to hit a high of 33,289.34 before terminating at 33,255.36, showing a hefty gain of 286.68 points, or 0.87 per cent.&nbsp;

The gauge had lost 205.71 points in the last session of FY18 on Wednesday.

The NSE 50-share Nifty also spurted by 98.10 points, or 0.97 per cent, to end at 10,211.80 after moving in a range of 10,220.10 and 10,127.75.

Sectoral indices, led by healthcare, metal, capital goods, oil &amp; gas infrastructure, auto and FMCG, gained up to 0.57 per cent. 
The NSE Nifty also advanced by 32.70 points, or 0.32 per cent, to 10,187.95.

Major gainers that supported the uptrend were ONGC, Sun Pharma, Tata Motors, Reliance Industries, ITC, Tata Steel and L&amp;T, rising up to 3.05 per cent.

Brokers said sustained foreign fund inflows, increased buying by domestic institutional investors (DIIs) and a mixed trend in other Asian bourses, after the Fed rate hike, influenced the market. 
An appreciating rupee against the dollar also supported investor sentiment, they said.

Meanwhile, on a net basis, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) bought shares worth Rs 98.44 crore, while DIIs purchases equities to the tune of Rs 197.78 crore yesterday, provisional data showed. 
Among other Asian markets, Japan&#39;s Nikkei was trading higher by 0.38 per cent, while Hong Kong&#39;s Hang Seng fell 0.61 per cent in their early deals. The Shanghai Composite index was down by 0.93 per cent.

The US Dow Jones Industrial Average ended 0.18 per cent lower in yesterday&#39;s trade.
