The RBI repo rate cut to 5.4 per cent on Wednesday also seemed to bring some cheer to investor sentiment in the local markets, which is grappling a slowdown in consumption and a credit squeeze among shadow banks.

"The expected rate cut has happened and there are signs that the regulator is clearing the NBFC (non-banking financial company) mess," said Anand James, chief market strategist at Geojit Financial Services.

The Nifty metals index was the top drag for the day as it fell 1.38 per cent, while the commodities index fell 0.7 per cent.

The public sector bank index, which was up 0.66 per cent, and the IT index that rose 0.56 per cent&nbsp;were among the gaining sectors for the day.

Among stocks, Indiabulls Housing Finance fell 7 per cent after the company reported a fall in June-quarter profit on Tuesday.

At the National Stock Exchange, all sectoral indices were in the red except for financial services. Nifty PSU bank dipped by 3.18 per cent, auto by 2.74 per cent, metal by 2.46 per cent and realty by 1.52 per cent.

Among stocks, Yes Bank dropped 12.7 per cent at Rs 85.90 per share after reporting 91 per cent drop in its net profit and bad loans worth Rs 6,230 crore during the first quarter of current fiscal.

ONGC was down by 4.4 per cent, Coal India by 4.3 per cent, Tata Motors by 4.1 per cent and Maruti by 3.3 per cent.

However, Wipro gained over 3 per cent. HDFC and Zee Entertainment too gained over 2 per cent each while Britannia and HDFC Bank showed marginal gains.

Meanwhile, Asian shares edged lower as Wall Street stocks dropped on signs that the US-China trade war could hurt corporate earnings.

Earlier in the week, US President Donald Trump kept up the pressure on Beijing with a threat to put tariffs on another 325 billion dollars of Chinese goods.

The benchmark Nikkei shed 1.97 per cent and Chinese shares followed the suit with Shanghai Composite down 1.04 per cent.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng retreated 0.46 per cent and South Korea's market was off 0.3 per cent after the Bank of Korea unexpectedly cut its policy interest rate for the first time in three years.&nbsp;

The government`s proposal to increase minimum public shareholding in listed companies, a surcharge on foreign portfolio investors and 20 per cent tax on buyback of securities dealt a heavy blow on the stock market on Monday, wiping out nearly Rs 5 lakh crore of investors` wealth.

However, on Tuesday, sectoral indices at the National Stock Exchange were mixed. Nifty realty gained over 2.8 per cent, pharma by 2.7 per cent and PSU bank by 1.4 per cent.

All the others were in the red. Among stocks, Titan dropped 12.25 per cent after the company said that its first-quarter witnessed a tough macro-economic environment with consumption being hit.&nbsp;

Jewellery segment`s revenue increased 13 per cent but a sharp increase in gold prices dented consumer demand significantly in June.UPL, Tata Consultancy Services, GAIL and HCL Tech were down between 1.9 and 3.6 per cent.&nbsp;

However, Indian Oil Corporation bucked the trend and rose 5.7 per cent. Shares of Bajaj Finance rallied 6 per cent in the afternoon trade after the company updated its business first-quarter numbers. Its new loans booked during Q1 FY20 was 73 lakh as compared to 56 lakh in Q1 FY19.&nbsp;

Hero MotoCorp closed over 3 per cent higher after the company announced a new leadership team to take care of e-mobility solutions in line with government initiatives.&nbsp;

Panic selling weighed in after Punjab National Bank reported a fraud of Rs 3,800 crore by Bhushan Power and Steel, saying the company misappropriated bank funds and manipulated books of accounts to raise funds from consortium lender banks.

PNB traded 11 per cent lower at Rs 72.75 per share while State Bank of India was down over 4 per cent at Rs 355.15 apiece. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Union Budget last week on Friday, her first after the National Democratic Alliance led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi swung to power after a landslide victory in the general elections.

Heavy selling pressure was seen in auto stocks due to the absence of any conspicuous impetus in the Budget for the beleaguered sector. Hero Motorcorp was down 4.6 per cent, Tata Motors by 3.3 per cent and Maruti Suzuki by 3.2 per cent. Bajaj Finance slipped 5.6 per cent while ONGC suffered by 4.9 per cent.

Traders said the Budget proposals did not contain any concrete proposals to ease liquidity crunch facing the financial markets. Though corporate taxes were cut to 25 per cent, the government raised import tariffs on items such as gold and imposed additional duty on petrol and diesel which could fuel inflation.

However, Yes Bank was up 5.9 per cent. Other which showed gains were Bharti Infratel and IT stocks like HCL Tech, Tata Consultancy Services and Tech Mahindra.

Meanwhile, Asian shares were broadly weaker after tracking Wall Street which fell from record highs last week. Investors turned their attention to the upcoming testimony from US Federal Reserve Chairman after a strong jobs report cast doubt on the pace of interest rate cuts.

Sensex crashes over 750 points to close at 38,720, Nifty ends at 11,559

Indian shares closed higher on Tuesday, with financials and IT stocks driving gains on the index as investors awaited further cues from the budget due later in the week.

Earlier in the session, markets witnessed thin trade as heavy rains lashed Mumbai, India's financial capital, for a second straight day, disrupting road, rail and air traffic.

The authorities declared a public holiday in the city.

The broader Nifty closed 0.38 per cent higher at 11,910.3, while the benchmark Sensex settled 0.33 per cent firmer at 39,816.48.

Housing Development Finance Corp Ltd closed 1.6 per cent up, while Infosys Ltd ended the session 1.1 per cent higher.

Meanwhile, a day after automakers posted lacklustre monthly sales figures, the country's auto index rebounded from early losses to close 0.2 per cent firmer.

Shares of Yes Bank Ltd finished the session 8.3 per cent lower on the report that Mumbai-based real estate company Radius Developers defaulted on scheduled interest payments on 12 bln rupees ($174.07 million) loan to the lender.

In the previous session on Tuesday, the BSE gauge settled 311.98 points, or 0.80 per cent, higher at 39,434.94; and the Nifty rose 96.80 points, or 0.83 per cent, to 11,796.45.

Top gainers in the Sensex pack included PowerGrid, NTPC, Sun Pharma, L&amp;T, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, Tata Motors, M&amp;M, Vedanta and ONGC, rising up to 2.26 per cent.

While, Tata Steel, Bajaj Finance, HUL, TCS, HDFC and IndusInd Bank fell up to 0.26 per cent.

According to experts, a positive momentum has been triggered in domestic stock market as monsoon swiftly progressed towards central and north India.

Despite weakness in global markets after US Fed chief Jerome Powell tempered expectations of aggressive rate cuts in the future, domestic investors were upbeat amid heavy foreign fund inflow ahead of the union budget next week as all eyes remain on what measure the current government will undertake to boost growth, traders said.

On a net basis, foreign institutional investors bought equities worth Rs 1,157.87 crore, and domestic institutional investors purchased shares to the tune of Rs 377.22 crore, provisional data available with stock exchanges showed Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Shanghai Composite Index, Hang Seng, Nikkei and Kospi were trading on a mixed note in their respective early sessions. 
On Wall Street, S&amp;P500 and Nasdaq ended in the red on Tuesday.

On the currency front, the Indian rupee depreciated 10 paise to 69.46 against the US dollar.

Sensex rises over 150 points; Nifty above 11,800

In a circular on Wednesday, NSE said shares of the company would be shifted from "Rolling Segment to Trade for Trade Segment, wherein the settlement in the script will take place on a gross basis with 100 per cent upfront margin and 5 per cent price band".

Hero MotoCorp Ltd advanced about 6 per cent&nbsp;and was the top gainer on both the indexes. The Nifty Auto index rose over 2 per cent.&nbsp;

The Nifty50 on the National Stock Exchange touched its fresh all-time high of 12,081.85 points.

Both the broader NSE Nifty and the benchmark BSE Sensex gained 1.39% each, settling above the 12,000 and 40,000 levels, respectively, for the first time ever.

Hero MotoCorp Ltd advanced about 6% and was the top gainer on both the indexes. The Nifty Auto index rose over 2%.

Top Sensex gainers include Hero MotoCorp, Bajaj Auto, Asian Paints, IndusInd Bank, HUL, Maruti, Coal India, HDFC twins, RIL and TCS, rallying up to 5 per cent.

While, ITC, L&amp;T and NTPC slipped up to 0.29 per cent.

According to traders, investors are lapping up stocks amid expectations of an interest rate cut by Reserve Bank of India (RBI) this week.

The RBI may go for another round of rate cut, third in a row, on Thursday to prop up the economic growth which dropped to a five-year low in the final quarter of 2018-19, experts said.

The RBI's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) is slated to announce its bi-monthly policy Thursday. The central bank had cut the short-term lending rate (repo rate) by 25 basis points each in its last two policy reviews. 
The MPC headed by RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das will meet for three days beginning June 3 to firm up the second bi-monthly monetary policy of the fiscal.

Meanwhile, foreign institutional investors bought equity worth Rs 676.15 crore on Friday, and domestic institutional investors purchased shares to the tune of Rs 394.09 crore, provisional data available with stock exchanges showed.

Elsewhere in Asia, bourses in China, Japan and Korea were trading on a mixed note in their respective early sessions.

On the currency front, the rupee also appreciated 43 paise to 69.26 against the US dollar.

Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, were trading 0.31 per cent lower at 61.83 per barrel.

Stock markets close at record high: Sensex surges 553 points, Nifty ends above 12,000 for first time

The benchmark BSE Sensex rallied over 500 points on Monday as it&nbsp;traded above 40,000 mark.

By 2:30 pm today, Sensex&nbsp;was trading at&nbsp;40,216&nbsp;while Nifty was at&nbsp;12,068.70 up by over 146&nbsp;points.

Equities have been on a high since Prime Minister Narendra Modi won a massive mandate in the recent general elections, with traders hoping for the economy to be on a growth path with a stable government.

Except for metal, pharma and PSU bank, all sectoral indices at the National Stock Exchange were in the positive zone.

Among the early gainers was Hero MotorCorp which gained 3.8 per cent at Rs 2,782 per share.

Bajaj Auto was up nearly two&nbsp;per cent at Rs 2,984 apiece.

However, ONGC dipped over two per cent.

The others which lost marginally were Tech Mahindra, Hindalco, Tata Motors and JSW Steel.

Meanwhile, Asian share markets slipped following intensifying US-China trade tensions and Washington's new tariff threats against Mexico.

Beijing implemented tariff hikes on Saturday and announced it will take action against 'unreliable'&nbsp;foreign companies.

Investors believe these developments could tip the global economy into a recession. Hong Kong opened flat on Monday while China and Korea eked out gains.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the domestic currency appreciated by 12 paise to 69.71 against the US dollar in opening trade.

The rupee opened strong at 69.76 at the interbank forex market then gained further ground to touch 69.71 per dollar amid positive opening in domestic equities, displaying gains of 12 paise against the greenback.

On Wednesday, the rupee had settled at 69.83 against the US dollar.

Snapping its three-day rising streak, the BSE Sensex dropped 248 points yesterday while Nifty lost 67.65 points to finish at 11,861.10.
