Nifty, Sensex slip after Moody's cuts outlook to 'negative'

Domestic stock market indices Sensex and Nifty closed in the negative zone as the investors remained cautious on economy concerns on Friday after markets digested Moody's downgrade of India's sovereign outlook from 'stable' to 'negative' citing increasing risks to the country's economic growth.

The outlook partly reflects government and policy ineffectiveness in addressing economic weakness, which led to an increase in debt burden from already high levels, the ratings agency said.

Moody's also took rating actions on 11 Indian financial institutions, eight corporates and seven sovereign-linked infrastructure companies.

The BSE S&amp;P Sensex closed 330 points or 0.8 per cent lower at 40,324 while the Nifty 50 moved down by 104 points to 11,908.&nbsp;

Most sectoral indices at the National Stock Exchange (NSE) were in the negative terrain except for Nifty realty which gained by 1.6 per cent and private bank by 0.7 per cent.

Nifty pharma dipped by 2.2 per cent, PSU bank by 1.9 per cent and FMCG by 1.8 per cent as investors kept their bets low amid mixed Q2 corporate earnings.

Among stocks, Bharti Infratel was a prominent loser with a drop of 4.9 per cent. Sun Pharma dipped by 4.3 per cent, GAIL by 3.9 per cent, UPL by 3.7 per cent and Vedanta by 3.2 per cent.

The government plans to give a boost to the housing market to revive over 1600 stalled housing projects covering 4.58 lakh units.

"A special window will be made, that will be an alternative investment fund (AIF). The government will first fund Rs 10,000 crore. There will be participation from SBI and LIC to place funds. The total funding from the government and SBI and LIC put together is expected to have a starting value at around Rs 25,000 crore," said Finance Minister. 
Addressing a press conference after the cabinet meeting, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the fund will provide relief to developers with unfinished projects and ensure delivery of homes to buyers. 
The minister said over 1,600 housing projects are stalled and about 4.58 lakh housing units are stuck in it. She said the fund will be set up as a Category-11 AIF (Alternate Investment Fund) debt fund registered with SEBI and would be professionally run.

"For these incomplete projects, we will put money into an escrow account. Those incomplete projects registered with RERA will get funded for the last finishing projects after assessing their net worth if it is positive. The money will be given in stages. So, people will not have to worry about projects getting completed or not," she said.

Among stocks, State Bank of India rose by 3.7 per cent while Infosys was up by 2.3 per cent and Wipro by 1.2 per cent.

The other prominent gainers were Grasim, HDFC Bank, Hero MotoCorp, Dr Reddy's, Titan and Nestle India.

But Tata Steel, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra, Bharti Infratel, Power Grid Corporation and Yes Bank showed marginal losses.

Meanwhile, Asian shares and US stock futures edged higher after the US Federal Reserve cut interest rates for the third time in a row by 25 basis points as expected to keep economic expansion on track.

However, the Fed hinted that there will be no further cuts unless deemed necessary.

Japan's Nikkei moved up by 0.36 per cent, Hong Kong's Hang Seng index by 1.06 per cent and South Korea's Kospi by 0.9 per cent.

But the Shanghai Composite index slipped by 0.09 per cent as data showed that factory activity in China shrank for the sixth straight month in October.

Sectoral indices at the National Stock Exchange were mixed with Nifty IT up by 1.1 per cent but auto, pharma and private banks in the red.

Shares of Vodafone Idea rose by 2.8 per cent, Bharti Airtel by 2.1 per cent and Bharti Infratel by 2.7 per cent after sources said that the Committee of Secretaries headed by Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba has been asked to evaluate financial stress faced by telecom operators and suggest measures to alleviate the stress.

Oil marketing firms IndianOil Corporation and Bharat Petroleum Corporation edged higher by 2.6 per cent and 1.8 per cent respectively after Prime Minister Narendra Modi said a day earlier that India will invest 100 billion dollars in oil and gas infrastructure to meet energy needs of an economy that is being targeted to nearly double in five years.

The other prominent gainers were IT majors Infosys and Wipro, Grasim, Larsen &amp; Toubro and Vedanta.

During the early trade at around 10.35 am, Sensex was trading at 40,020.22 points, up by 188 points while Nifty was up 55.85 points at 11,842.60.

Sectoral indices at the National Stock Exchange were mixed with Nifty PSU bank up by 3.7 per cent, IT by 1.4 per cent and FMCG by one per cent.

Among stocks, energy major GAIL was a prominent winner with gains of 6.3 per cent at Rs 133.80.

IndianOil too showed gains of 1.9 per cent after Prime Minister Narendra Modi said a day earlier that India will invest 100 billion dollars in oil and gas infrastructure to meet energy needs of an economy that is being targeted to nearly double in five years.

The country's largest lender State Bank of India edged higher by 3.4 per cent to Rs 290.40 per share. Besides, Tata Consultancy Services, ITC, Nestle India, Bharti Airtel and Eicher Motors showed modest profits.

Sensex gains 220 points, hits 40,000 for first time since July

India’s benchmark equity indices ended with sharp gains today shrugging off a weak start in early morning trade.&nbsp;

The Sensex closed 582 points or 1.48 per cent, higher at 39,831.84, NSE Nifty50 settled 160 points, or 1.37 per cent, up at 11,786.85.

Globally, optimism over US-China trade deal and the European Union extending Brexit deadline to January 31 2020, also boosted sentiment.

All sectoral indices at the National Stock Exchange were in the green except for Nifty FMCG.&nbsp;

Equity benchmark indices remained flat on the bourses during early hours of Wednesday amid weak global cues as investors awaited a slew of corporate earnings of the second fiscal quarter.

At 10:15 am, the BSE S&amp;P Sensex was up by 110 points at 39,073 while the Nifty 50 edged higher by 48 points to 11,637. All sectoral indices at the National Stock Exchange were in the red with thin margins except for Nifty IT and pharma.

Among stocks, private lenders Yes Bank, IndusInd Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank were down between 1.3 and 1.7 per cent. Adani Ports lost by 4.8 per cent, Tata Motors by 2.4 per cent and JSW Steel by 1.1 per cent.

Infosys which had shed 16.65 per cent on Tuesday after a whistleblower complaint against unethical practices by certain senior management members of the firm, was trading at Rs 644.35 per share, up by 0.16 per cent.

However, those which showed gains were Bajaj Finserv, Bajaj Finance, HCL Technologies, Titan and Britannia.

Meanwhile, Asian markets fell after British lawmakers rejected the government's schedule to fast-track legislation for a Brexit deal despite voting for the bill. That effectively meant that Britain will not be able to finalise its exit by the October 31 deadline.

Japan's Nikkei stood almost flat after having fallen as much as 0.4 per cent while MSCI's broadest index of Asia Pacific shares outside Japan fell by 0.5 per cent.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng slipped by 0.94 per cent, Shanghai Composite by 0.31 per cent and South Korea's Kospi by 0.42 per cent.

All sectoral indices at the National Stock Exchange were in the positive zone with Nifty PSU bank showing an uptick of 1.4 per cent.

Among stocks, Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) surged 22.78 per cent in early trade after reports of government likely to cut its stake in the company.

An inter-ministerial group is expected to meet soon to discuss the stake sale.

Yes Bank was up by 6.8 per cent while NTPC, UltraTech Cement, Larsen &amp; Toubro and Bajaj Finance gained between 1.3 and 1.7 per cent.

Among the losers were Zee Entertainment, Bharti Airtel, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra, Infosys and Bajaj Auto.

Meanwhile, Asian stocks tumbled after China posted its weakest growth in nearly three decades.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia Pacific shares outside Japan was down by 0.17 per cent, echoing Wall Street's small gains.

But Japan's Nikkei added gains of 0.18 per cent. While a new draft Brexit deal was agreed upon between Britain and the EU, China's economic growth slowed more than expected to 6 per cent year-on-year in the third quarter of 2019, marking the weakest pace in nearly three decades.

The broader NSE Nifty was down 0.06 per cent&nbsp;at 11,458.30 at 0420 GMT, while the benchmark BSE Sensex rose 0.1 per cent at 38,638.56.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was slightly higher after data showed U.S. retail sales contracted in September for the first time in seven months, in a potential sign that manufacturing-led weakness could be spreading to the broader economy.

Meanwhile, investors in India hoped that the government's corporate tax cut last month would give fillip to companies' September-quarter earnings.

"The calm on the global side due to the mid-term resolution between the United States and China and better results will drive markets," said Rusmik Oza, head of fundamental research at Kotak Securities.

"There could be healthy earnings growth because of the tax cut."

Media stocks were among top gainers on the indexes with the Nifty Media index rising as much as 1 per cent, driven by sector heavyweight Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd, which is scheduled to report earnings later in the day. Zee shares were up about 1 per cent.

Eicher Motors, however, topped the Nifty index and rose 3.75 per cent.

Meanwhile, battered mining and steel stocks continued to fall and were among the top losers for the day sending the metals index down 1.4 per cent.

JSW Steel, Vedanta Ltd and Hindalco were all down between 2 per cent&nbsp;and 2.5 per cent.

Dewan Housing Finance Ltd (DHFL) shares fell 5 per cent after the Economic Times reported the company gave loans to a firm at the centre of investigations into the operations of a gangster.

DHFL has since denied the allegations in the report.

Tata Motors wound up at Rs 142.55 apiece, up 13.2 per cent.

The other prominent gainers were Eicher Motors which closed 7.9 per cent higher and IndusInd Bank which gained by over 5 per cent.&nbsp;

Sensex soars 453 points, Nifty nears 11,600

Indian shares moved higher on Wednesday, as investors looked towards a rise in September-quarter earnings for companies after the government`s corporate tax cut, amid a rise in inflation and hopes of further rate cuts from the central bank.

The broader NSE Nifty rose 0.4 per cent at 11,474.90 as of 0408 GMT, while the benchmark BSE Sensex was up 0.35 per cent at 38,634.90.

The September-quarter earnings season has so far seen blue-chip companies such as Hindustan Unilever (HUL) , Wipro Ltd and ACC Ltd beat estimates.

Earnings were in-part helped by the government`s move to slash corporate taxes last month.

Federal Bank and Mindtree Ltd are among the companies scheduled to report earnings later on Wednesday. Both the companies` shares were up between 0.5 per cent and 1 per cent ahead of the announcement.

Meanwhile, retail inflation for September rose, but a sharp economic slowdown has left analysts predicting a further rate cut by the Reserve bank of India.

"Investors are hoping for optimism from corporates in their Q2 earnings commentary led by corporate tax rate cuts and revival in consumer demand," said Rajesh Cheruvu, chief investment officer at Validus Wealth.

Broader Asian shares that rose in line with overnight gains in U.S. equities also supported Indian indexes.

MSCI`s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was up 0.2 per cent.

In the domestic market, Bharat Petroleum Corp topped the gainers list on the Nifty index, as the stock rose 4.79 per cent.

Wipro shares were up about 2.7 per cent&nbsp;after the company reported better-than-expected September-quarter earnings and also gave an optimistic revenue forecast for the next quarter.

Among other companies that reported earnings on Tuesday, ACC Ltd rose 2.69 per cent, while the Multi Commodity Exchange of India was up about 7%.

However, Vedanta Ltd was the morning`s top loser on the NSE index, dropping 1.4 per cent.
