Croatia captain <a href="http://www.wionews.com/search?q=luka+modric">Luka Modric</a> was named Balkan Athlete of the Year on Thursday, becoming only the second football player to scoop the prize after Bulgaria's former European Footballer of the Year Hristo Stoichkov in 1994.

Ballon d'Or winner Modric won the Champions League and the FIFA Club World Cup with his Spanish club Real Madrid as well as being instrumental in helping Croatia reach the World Cup final in Russia. He was awarded the tournament's Golden Ball Award.

The 33-year-old, who received 75 points in the 46th poll, organised by Bulgarian News Agency (BTA), beat Serbia's world number one tennis player Novak Djokovic, who topped the annual poll five times in a row between 2011 and 2015.

Another tennis player, Romania's Simona Halep, who finished the year as women's world number one for the second consecutive season, came third in the poll, which is conducted by the state-run news agencies in nine Balkan countries.

Luka Modric beats Novak Djokovic to win Balkan athlete of year

Young German Alexander Zverev's breakthrough title at the ATP Finals in London last month brought the future into focus but the year ended with men's tennis in the grip of a block of 30 somethings led by a resurgent Novak Djokovic.

Serbian Djokovic, 31, needed elbow surgery in February to cure a problem that surfaced in 2017, but after some jarring defeats he returned to the kind of domination he achieved in 2015, winning Wimbledon and the U.S. Open.

Roger Federer continued to hold back the clock as only he can by winning the Australian Open, aged 36 and a few weeks later became the ATP's oldest world number one.

Rafael Nadal, 32, had an injury-hit year but that did not stop the Spaniard winning an 11th French Open title.

By the time the long season wrapped up, Djokovic, Nadal and Federer were one, two and three in the ATP rankings with seven of the top 10 aged 30 or over.

The eagerly-awaited return of Serena Williams to the women's game after giving birth to daughter Alexis Olympia last September failed to deliver the American a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam singles title, although she was tantalisingly close.

It is not the majestic tennis she played en route to the Wimbledon and U.S. Open finals that will be remembered, however, but her controversial Flushing Meadows showdown against Japan's Naomi Osaka and the ensuing fall-out and allegations of sexism.

In one of the most infamous matches played in the New York cauldron, Williams raged after being given a code violation for 'off-court coaching' in the second set, got a point penalty for angrily smashing a racket and was docked a game for calling umpire Carlos Ramos a "liar".

Osaka, who has since turned 21, somehow stayed calm in the bedlam to beat her childhood idol, but was reduced to tears as the crowd booed during the post-match presentations -- angry at the perceived unfair treatment of the queen of women's tennis.

Patience paid off for two of the WTA's ultimate battlers.

Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki beat Simona Halep on an oven-like Rod Laver Arena to win the Australian Open and claim her first Grand Slam title, at the 43rd attempt.

A few months later Halep became the first Romanian to win a Grand Slam title for 40 years as she beat American Sloane Stephens at Roland Garros.

'COULDN'T BREATHE'

She had lost her previous three finals, including the year before in Paris from a winning position, but after losing the first set against Stephens roared back to claim the most popular victory of the year.

"In the last game I couldn't breathe, I just didn't want to repeat what happened the other years," Halep, who finished 2018 as world number one, said.

Germany's Angelique Kerber ripped up the script at Wimbledon. Serena Williams had looked unstoppable during a blazing fortnight on the All England Club lawns and was odds-on to claim an eighth singles title, equal Margaret Court's 24 slams and become the first mum to win Wimbledon for 38 years.

With support in the Royal Box from friend Meghan Markle, wife of Britain's Prince Harry, the stage was set for Serena but an inspired Kerber dropped just six games to become the first German woman to win the title since Steffi Graf in 1996.

That final was controversially played after the conclusion of the men's semi between Djokovic and Nadal, itself delayed by South African Kevin Anderson's epic, six-hour-36-minute defeat of American John Isner, 26-24 in the deciding set.

Djokovic took brutal advantage of a fatigued Anderson in the final and later in the year Wimbledon called time on "never-ending" matches as they announced that from 2019 onwards tiebreaks would be played at 12-12 in the decider.

Wimbledon lit the blue touch-paper for Djokovic who had entered the Championships seeded 12 after slipping to his lowest ranking since 2006.

After ending a two-year Grand Slam drought he went 28-3 for the rest of the year, including winning 16 consecutive sets to march to the U.S. Open title where he beat Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro in the final.

That took him level on 14 Grand Slams with Pete Sampras and hunting Nadal (17) and Federer (20) on the all-time list.

Young guns like Zverev, Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas and Karen Khachanov are expected to chip away at the old order in 2019 but the changing of the guard is happening at a glacial pace.

Time has caught up with the 118-year-old Davis Cup, however.

This year's final, won by Croatia in France, was the last before a controversial revamp kicks in after sweeping changes were voted in by the International Tennis Federation.

Next November in Madrid, 18 nations will contest a soccer World Cup-style climax to the event.

Novak Djokovic back on top as old guard refuse to let go

Twenty four hours after being booed for having the audacity to take down a tennis great, Alexander Zverev returned to topple another one as he stunned Novak Djokovic to win the ATP Finals title on Sunday.

Zverev, billed as the player most likely to lead the sport into a new golden era once the holy trinity of Roger Federer, Djokovic and Rafael Nadal have hung up their rackets, took full advantage of an off-key Serb to win 6-4, 6-3.

Hamburg-born Zverev had been shamefully booed and heckled on Saturday by a Federer-worshipping crowd having beaten the six-time champion after a controversial second-set tiebreak.

Against world number one Djokovic, however, the 18,000 fans wedged into the cavernous O2 arena were roaring their support as he produced a level of tennis his opponent could not match.

He struck 20 winners to Djokovic's seven - the last of which was a backhand to end a one hour and 19-minute duel.

"I really can't describe it. It is the biggest title I have ever won," Zverev said on court after becoming the first German to win the ATP's most prestigious title - often referred to as 'the fifth slam' - since Boris Becker in Frankfurt in 1995.

In becoming the youngest ATP Finals champion since Djokovic, also 21, in 2008, Zverev sent out a clear message that he is ready to spend a considerable amount of time at tennis' top table and start accumulating the game's biggest prizes.

Djokovic, whose error-strewn display was a shock after a dominant week in southeast London which included an easy round-robin win over Zverev, sportingly walked around the net to congratulate his conqueror after match point - the German still laying on his back in a state of disbelief.

Later, Djokovic told reporters: "There's a lot of similarities in terms of trajectory of professional tennis, in our careers. Hopefully, he can surpass me.

"There's a lot of time ahead of him. (I) Wish him to stay healthy and obviously win a lot of titles."

Zverev, younger brother of Tour pro-Mischa and now coached by eight-times major champion Ivan Lendl, is yet to go past the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam.

That is still the test next year but on Sunday he displayed an added sense of maturity, to go with the natural flair and easy power that have marked him out as a future number one.

His forehand, often regarded as a weakness, was armour-plated and he showed a refreshing willingness to attack the net -- a skill he perhaps has learned from his brother.

Most impressive was that he often prevailed in the long, attritional baseline rallies in which Djokovic has used as the foundation for 14 Grand Slam titles.

The opening eight games resembled a boxing match with both players probing for weaknesses - although it was evident that Zverev's packed the more powerful punches.

Djokovic, winner of 35 of his last 37 matches during a dominant second half of the year which propelled him back to world number one, had not dropped serve all week and had faced only two break points in his four previous matches.

But at 4-4 he wavered as he yanked an edgy forehand halfway up the net to give Zverev the chance to serve for the set.

Zverev took his opportunity in emphatic fashion - blasting down three consecutive aces then winning the set when another Djokovic forehand flew long.

An increasingly-ragged Djokovic then dropped his opening two service games of the second set, either side of breaking Zverev for the first time as the German played a rare loose game.

The crowd still expected a Djokovic fight back but it never materialised and at 3-5 the 31-year-old crumbled, serving a double-fault to help Zverev earn two match points.

He saved the first but was left standing as Zverev conjured a stunning backhand to cap a brilliant display.

'Long way to go to beat Djokovic's titles' tally,' says Alexander Zverev

Novak Djokovic produced a masterful display to outclass South Africa's Kevin Anderson 6-2, 6-2 on Saturday (November 17) to set up an ATP Finals title showdown with Alexander Zverev.

The world number one was immaculate from start to finish against the 32-year-old as he put himself within touching distance of a record-equalling sixth title at the year-ender.

He offered up a mere 14 unforced errors and not a single break point as he again proved too good for Anderson, who he beat to win Wimbledon this year.

"I think it was the best match I've played so far this week -- it came at the right time," Djokovic, who has been almost unstoppable in the second half of the year, said.

"Kevin has been playing great tennis this week. He lost his serve in the first game which was big because he relies so much on his serve. I tried to win as many points on his second serve as possible. It worked very well.

"I'm very happy to reach the final."

Djokovic found his range immediately and the writing was on the wall for Anderson when he dropped serve in the opening game.

Anderson, the first South African to reach the semi-finals in the tournament's 48-year history, simply had no answer to the relentless accuracy of Djokovic's groundstrokes and had to save two break points in his next service game.

Breezing through his own service games - he is yet to be broken this week - Djokovic was able to exert maximum pressure on Anderson's delivery and his opponent buckled to drop serve again as Djokovic pocketed a one-sided opener.

There was no let-up at the start of the second set for Anderson as he double-faulted to go 0-40 in his opening service game, Djokovic duly breaking again as the world number six dumped a forehand into the net.

Anderson received a code violation for an audible obscenity but it was hard to blame him for losing his cool as Djokovic continued to turn the screw.

Breaks were arriving with the frequency of London buses for the Serb and a rasping crosscourt forehand gave him another one as he romped into a 5-1 lead.

Anderson nicked one game back but it was a hopeless task and Djokovic put him out of his misery with a netcord on matchpoint to claim a 35th win in his last 37 matches -- a run including the Wimbledon and U.S. Open titles to swell his collection of Grand Slam titles to 14.

Not bad for a man who began the year plagued with an elbow injury that needed surgery and who slumped to 22nd in the ATP rankings as recently as June.

Should he win against the 21-year-old Zverev, who he beat convincingly in the round-robin stage here, the 31-year-old will become the oldest player to claim the title.

Roger Federer, the previous oldest, was beaten 7-5, 7-6(5) by Zverev in the day's first semi-final.

Novak Djokovic thumps Anderson to set up final clash with Zverev

The last time Novak Djokovic played at the O2 Arena he suffered a chastening defeat at the hands of home hero Andy Murray which confirmed the end of his dominance at the top of the men's game.

His return to the ATP Finals on Monday, after missing the 2017 edition because of an elbow injury, offered conclusive proof that the Serb is once again top dog.

The elastic-limbed 31-year-old, bidding to equal Roger Federer's record of six titles at the ATP's blue-riband event, produced an immaculate display to tame American giant John Isner, who was making his tournament debut, 6-4 6-3.

Already guaranteed to end the year as world number one after winning Wimbledon and the US&nbsp;Open, Djokovic is a massive favourite to complete an incredible resurgence from world number 22 in June with another title in London's docklands.

He will now set his sights on Germany's Alexander Zverev in his second round-robin match after the exciting 21-year-old beat Croatia's Marin Cilic 7-6(5) 7-6(1) to open his account in the Gustavo Kuerten group earlier in the day.

Isner, at 33 the oldest first-timer at the eight-man season-ender since Andres Gimeno made his debut aged 35 in 1972, was not overawed but never managed to lay a glove on Djokovic in the 73-minute contest.

Djokovic lost only four points on his own serve in the first set but what was most worrying for Isner was the way his opponent managed to read his towering delivery, pinging back returns to the baseline with monotonous regularity.

"He's the best returner I've ever faced for sure," Isner said. "Sometimes you got to hope he's a bit off. Unfortunately, I don't think that was the case tonight. I got my ass kicked."

Having failed to convert break points in Isner's opening two service games, Djokovic made no mistake when another chance came along, belting a forehand return for a winner and a 4-2 lead.

KICKING HIMSELF

Isner saved a set point when serving at 3-5 and banged down three consecutive aces to stay in the set but Djokovic calmly held to seize the opener.

The writing was on the wall for Isner when Djokovic broke serve at 3-3 in the second set -- the Serb roaring his approval. Two games later Djokovic sealed victory with a crosscourt backhand winner.

While the O2 Arena has been a happy hunting ground for Djokovic with four of his five ATP Finals titles arriving there, the same cannot be said of four-time qualifier Cilic.

The Croat's defeat by Zverev -- a repeat of his loss to the German 12 months ago -- means he is 1-9 for the tournament.

Cilic would have been kicking himself after allowing a first set that he initially dominated slip from his grasp.

He had points for a 4-0 and 5-1 lead but allowed world number five Zverev to hit back and win the opening set on a tiebreaker, sealing it with a sublime backhand pass.

Breaks of serve were exchanged in the second set before Cilic was required to save a match point at 4-5.

A second tiebreak arrived and just as in the day`s first shootout, it was Zverev who jumped into a lead against an edgy Cilic who double-faulted at 1-4.

Zverev nailed a backhand winner down the line to earn five more match points and converted the first with a powerful first serve that Cilic fenced into the net.

"I was just trying to get myself going, trying to get the energy up. It worked out," Zverev, who vented his anger in the direction of coach Ivan Lendl in the early stages, said.

His task now will be to avoid last year`s let-down when, after beating Cilic on his debut match, he then lost to Roger Federer and Jack Sock to miss out on the semi-finals.

ATP Finals: Clinical Djokovic tames Isner, Zverev edges Cilic

World number one Novak Djokovic leapt to the defence of great rival Roger Federer on Monday after claims that the Swiss enjoys preferential treatment on Tour.

Frenchman Julien Benneteau caused a stir on Sunday saying tournament referees were often kinder to Federer when it came to scheduling his matches.

Benneteau was particularly referring to the Australian Open where he said 20-time Grand Slam champion Federer played "12 or 13" of his 14 matches at Melbourne in the past two years at night, so avoiding the often scorching temperatures.

He also suggested Federer's Laver Cup project, an exhibition team event in which Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley is also involved, represented a conflict of interest.

Asked for his thoughts after his round-robin victory over American John Isner at the ATP Finals on Monday, Djokovic said Federer had earned the right for special treatment.

"In the end of the day, in a way he deserves the special treatment because he's six-time champion of Australian Open and arguably the best player ever," Djokovic told reporters.

"If he doesn't have it, who is going to have it? People want to see him play on the centre court, and they want to see him play in showtime, the best hours, which is 7:30 at night in Rod Laver Arena.

"I understand Julien's point because sometimes it does seem that maybe certain players get more favoured year after year in certain tournaments. On the other side, you have to understand that Federer is a driving force of tennis in terms of revenue, in terms of attention.

"Julien and guys like him are also benefiting from tennis, because of Roger, because of what he has done for the sport."

Isner went even further, saying the likes of Federer, Djokovic and Rafael Nadal should get even more privileges.

"If anything, maybe they should get more special treatment because those guys, the top players, have made other players below them a lot of money," the American said after his 6-4 6-3 defeat.

"It is like the Tiger Woods effect in golf. So that is how you can look at a guy like Roger. He is men`s tennis in my opinion. He deserves everything and more that he`s ever had."

Novak Djokovic continues to lead ATP rankings

Novak Djokovic can now add the "Comeback Player of the Year" award to his vast collection of honours and the Serb can complete his remarkable resurgence by winning a record-equalling sixth title at the ATP Finals next week.

When Djokovic began the year outside the top 10 in the ATP rankings and battling the elbow injury that sidelined him for the second half of 2017, few imagined he would arrive for the season-ender in London back as leader of the pack.

But the 31-year-old will end the year as number one, having slumped to a 12-year low of 22 in May.

Rafael Nadal's hopes of clinging to top spot ended when he pulled out of the ATP Finals with abdominal and ankle injuries while Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro misses out with a knee injury having qualified for the first time since 2013.

Six of the world's top eight are present though including perennial London favourite Roger Federer who, aged 37, will be appearing at the ATP showpiece for the 16th time looking for a seventh title and a first since 2011.

He marked down Djokovic as the favourite during his pre-tournament news conference on Friday.

"It's really only Novak who can say 'If I play as well as I have the last three months then maybe I can win the ATP Finals as well'," the Swiss, who begins in Lleyton Hewitt group against Japan's Kei Nishikori on Sunday, told reporters.

"But that's never a given because best-of-three-set matches indoors, the margins are slimmer and it can slip fast."

Djokovic looks the man most likely to deny Federer a 100th Tour title, having resumed the dominance he displayed in 2011, 2015 and 2016.

After admitting he returned too soon from elbow surgery in February, his game clicked into gear at Wimbledon where he beat Nadal in a classic semi-final then swept past Kevin Anderson to the title.

'ULTIMATE CHALLENGE'

He posted a 22-match winning streak from Cincinatti to the Paris Masters, taking in the U.S. Open where he beat Del Potro to earn his 14th Grand Slam title and go equal third on the all-time list with Pete Sampras, behind only Nadal and Federer.

"Being (ranked) number one is probably the ultimate challenge in our sport and the pinnacle of the season," Djokovic, voted by his fellow professionals as the Comeback Player of the Year, told reporters.

"It's extra special this season because of the whole journey I've been through the past 15 months, particularly the last eight months, after surgery in February.

"Quite incredible, not just that I was ranked 22. I never thought it was impossible but I thought it might take more time. It turned out to be a perfect five months."

Djokovic heads the Gustavo Kuerten group and will begin against big-serving American debutant John Isner on Monday before tackling German wunderkind Alexander Zverev, making his second appearance, and Croatian powerhouse Marin Cilic.

Isner hopes to make a similar impact to compatriot Jack Sock, who reached the semis on his debut last year before losing to eventual champion Grigor Dimitrov.

"It means a lot to be here," Isner said. "Been pretty close throughout my career, but it never happened."

On facing Djokovic first up, he said: "I'm up against it for sure. He's had an incredible second half to the year. I don't have much to lose, so I'll play loose and free."

Anderson is the other debutant and will become the first South African in 23 years to grace the season-ender.

He opens play in Hewitt group on Sunday against French Open runner-up Dominic Thiem.

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic eyes sixth ATP Finals crown

Karen Khachanov caused one of the shocks of the tennis year by overpowering <a href="http://www.wionews.com/search?q=novak+djokovic">Novak Djokovic</a> 7-5, 6-4 in the <a href="http://www.wionews.com/search?q=paris+masters">Paris Masters</a> final to end the Serbian's remarkable spell of dominance in the men's game on Sunday.

The 22-year-old Russian has for some time been seen as one of the rising young talents of the sport but few could have envisaged his demolition of the Serbian superstar, who was on a three-month, 22-match winning streak.

Djokovic was expected to celebrate his return to world number one on Monday with a record-extending fifth Paris title but he went down in one hour 37 minutes amid a hail of 31 crushing winners from the Muscovite's racket.

Khachanov, a strapping 6ft 6in huge hitter with surprisingly fleet movement around the court, took advantage of Djokovic appearing to be a little under-the-weather after a week struggling with flu-like symptoms.

Yet even though the Serb may also have been suffering from the after-effects of his epic three-hour win over Roger Federer in the semi-final on Saturday, nothing could be taken away from the outstanding quality of Khachanov's attacking game.

Earning his fourth straight win over a top-10 player this week, Khachanov, whose muscular game resembles that of his childhood hero Marat Safin, the last Russian winner in Paris, picked up the biggest title of his burgeoning career.

Paris Masters: Karen Khachanov shocks Djokovic to win title

Novak Djokovic defeated Roger Federer in a thrilling semi-final at the Paris Masters on Saturday to extend his winning run to 22 matches ahead of his return to world number one next week.

The Serb outlasted Federer in just over three hours to prevail 7-6 (8/6), 5-7, 7-6 (7/3).

He will meet Russia's Karen Khachanov in Sunday's final as he looks to pull level with Rafael Nadal on 33 career Masters titles.

Djokovic, who will replace an injury-plagued Nadal at the top of the rankings on Monday, now leads Federer 25-22 overall and has not lost to the Swiss since 2015.

"Novak is obviously on a roll. You can feel it. At the end it came down to a few things here and there," said Federer, who returned to play in Paris this week for the first time in three years.

"But overall I'm happy with my game. It's better than last week in Basel. There I won the tournament and here I played in the semis and it needed somebody of Novak's calibre to beat me.

"So that's all right. And I'm looking forward to a rest now and a good preparation for London (ATP Finals)." Djokovic will go in search of a fifth Paris trophy after denying Federer a shot at a historic 100th title, although the Wimbledon and US Open champion was pushed all the way by his 37-year-old rival.

Djokovic watched four break points, one of which Federer saved with a magnificent reflex volley, go by as he led 4-3 in the opening set, before saving a set point on his serve in the tie-break.

A Federer backhand drifted wide to hand Djokovic the lead, although two more break points passed the Serb by in the first game of the second set with the Swiss on the ropes.

The missed opportunity proved costly when Federer conjured up just a second break point of the contest at 6-5, converting in style as he gambled on Djokovic going cross-court before batting a winner down the line to force a decider.

Federer fended off two more break points to open the third set as Djokovic hit the deck when his ankle appeared to catch in the surface.

The Serb threw his racket down in frustration as Federer again escaped from 15-40 down to move 5-4 ahead, but the 20-time Grand Slam champion's magic fizzled out as the final set headed to a tie-break.

Djokovic reeled off six successive points to bring up five match points, clinching victory at the third attempt when Federer picked out the net to end a tense concluding rally.

Earlier, the 22-year-old Khachanov advanced to his first Masters final after beating Austrian sixth seed Dominic Thiem 6-4, 6-1.

"I'm really happy to achieve this, to make it to the finals. But the tournament is not over. I mean, I'm looking forward to play finals tomorrow," said the 18th-ranked Khachanov.

Going into the Paris Masters, Khachanov had won just three of his 19 matches against players in the Top 10 but it took him just 71 minutes to add the scalp of world number eight Thiem to those of John Isner (9) and Alexander Zverev (5) whom he beat earlier in the week.

The 1.98m Khachanov dominated from the baseline and attacked the Thiem service, breaking the Austrian in his final five service games of the match.

The Russian number two now has 15 match wins at this level this year, including a trip to the semi-finals of the Rogers Cup in Toronto.

Khachanov has also won two ATP World Tour titles in 2018 with triumphs in Marseille and at the Kremlin Cup.
"I am very happy with the way I have been playing," said the Russian who is assured of climbing at least to 12th in the ATP rankings when they are published on Monday.&nbsp;

"I am very happy with the way I have been playing," said the Russian who is assured of climbing at least to 12th in the ATP rankings when they are published on Monday.

Paris Masters: Novak Djokovic beats Roger Federer to reach final

Roger Federer made quick work of Kei Nishikori at the Paris Masters on Friday (November 2) with a comprehensive 6-4, 6-4 win.

The Swiss star's win moves him a step nearer to winning his 100th career title, but he has to defeat an old nemesis in the form of Serbia's Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals.

Djokovic, who will return to world number one next week, had to overcome a nagging flu and formidable examination from Marin Cilic.

The Croat took the first set and was a break up in the final set, but Djokovic fought back to take the match 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Federer, in stark contrast, was hardly stretched at all in despatching Nishikori, beating the Japanese for a sixth straight time while not dropping serve.

He did, though, offer a few glimpses of his very best, which will be needed to beat Djokovic in their 47th meeting on Saturday (November 2).

Roger Federer beats Nishikori to set-up Djokovic battle

Novak Djokovic began his bid for a record-extending fifth Paris Masters title with a 7-5, 6-1 win against Joao Sousa in the second round on Tuesday, and lent a helping hand to a spectator in the process.

Serving for the match at 5-1, Djokovic handed a towel to a man in the crowd who seemed unwell and who wiped his forehead with it.

"It seemed he was sweating and he seemed dizzy, so he just needed help," Djokovic said. "I just gave him the towel." Djokovic revealed he also was not feeling very well out on court.

"I wasn't," he said. "I don't want to get into details but I think it's a minor thing."

The second-ranked Serb set up match point with an ace and sealed victory on his third match point when Sousa returned a second serve long.

The US Open champion won four of the last five tournaments he has entered, including Wimbledon, the U.S. Open and most recently the Shanghai Masters.

Djokovic is seeking to reclaim the top ranking from Rafael Nadal at a tournament Nadal has never won. Djokovic next faces Damir Dzumhur.

Fifth-seeded Marin Cilic, the Australian Open runner-up, won his second-round match 6-3, 6-4 against Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany.

Dzumhur upset 14th-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3, 6-3, while big-hitting Russian Karen Khachanov also advanced to the third round. He led 6-2, 2-0 against Matthew Ebden when the Australian retired.

Returning from a right knee injury , Nadal faces Spanish countryman Fernando Verdasco on Wednesday, with 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer also in second-round action against Milos Raonic. Federer leads the big-serving Canadian 11-3 overall.

Federer's last appearance at the Paris indoor event was a third-round loss to big-serving John Isner in 2015. There were doubts Federer would play after a gruelling past week which saw him clinch his ninth victory at the Swiss Indoors and 99th overall.

"I feel good," Federer told a news conference. "I feel like I recovered well from last week."&nbsp;

The 37-year-old Federer is selective of when he plays in order to keep his body as fresh as possible, and he skipped the entire clay-court season for the second straight year.

With the season-ending ATP Finals in London starting Nov. 11, he is playing three straight tournaments. But the third-ranked Federer feels comfortable with it.

"I feel like it's better for me to play matches rather than practice," Federer said.

"As long as I don't feel like I'm taking a chance on my health prior to London, that's the key as well."&nbsp;

Federer showed fighting qualities last week in Basel, where he was twice taken to three sets and went an early break down in three of his last four matches.

"I was a bit bumpy. But I was happy how I was fighting, how I was trying to figure it out in a different manner," he said.&nbsp;

"Last week was special to win the way I did it, in a different manner."&nbsp;

Federer moved within 10 titles of Jimmy Connors all-time singles record. He is cautious about his chances of success in Paris, where his only tournament victory came in 2011.

The Australian Open champion is drawn in the same half as Djokovic; Cilic and big-serving Kevin Anderson, who upset Federer in the Wimbledon quarterfinals this year.

"I rarely play two or three tournaments in a row now. So starting on Wednesday and winning five matches in a row with this caliber (of players) is very difficult," Federer said.&nbsp;

"If I get close to the last four that would also be great." In first-round play Tuesday, there were wins for Mikhail Kukushkin, Gilles Simon, Daniil Medvedev, Marton Fucsovics, Raonic and Verdasco.&nbsp;

Novak Djokovic beats Zverev to reach Shanghai Masters final

Kevin Anderson avenged a Wimbledon finals loss to Novak Djokovic as Team World dominated the night session Saturday to climb back into contention at the 2018 Laver Cup.

Anderson's surprise win, combined with a doubles victory by World's Jack Sock and Nick Kyrgios over Grigor Dimitrov and David Goffin, slashed Europe's overall lead to 7-5 heading into Sunday's third and final day of the exhibition tournament.

Earlier Saturday, Roger Federer and Alexander Zverev powered Europe into a commanding 7-1 lead by winning their singles matches to set a daunting task for the underdog World team in Chicago.

South Africa's Anderson got the fightback started by upsetting reigning Wimbledon and US Open champ Djokovic 7-6, 5-7, 10-6 to earn two points for Team World at the United Center arena.

"We've had some really close matches that haven't gone our way and I really wanted to put us back in there," said Anderson.

"It's not easy playing one of the best players of all time, but what an amazing atmosphere.

"It's just fantastic, for so many reasons. I felt I played a great match – beating Novak on any stage is great and here in Chicago makes it extra special."

Under the scoring system for the Laver Cup, victories on day two are worth two points each, with victories on day three rising to three points.

Defending champion Europe needs 13 points to take the title, which is being held for the second time.

Heading into Saturday's match, 14-time grand slam winner Djokovic held a 6-1 career advantage, including a 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (7/3) win over Anderson in July at Wimbledon. This was Anderson's first singles win over Djokovic in a decade.&nbsp;

On Saturday, they played the fourth 10 point tiebreaker of the tournament and it was the first win for Team World. Under the format being used for the tournament, a tiebreak is used instead of a decisive third set.

Anderson closed it out when the Serb fired a forehand into the net and the South African was mobbed by his teammates.

"Kevin was so well prepared for this, we needed this bad," said World captain&nbsp;John McEnroe. "It was absolutely awesome."

Federer on fire

World number two Roger Federer was barely ruffled as he cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 win over Kyrgios.

"I felt good from the beginning of the match and that’s not usual," said Federer. "Usually you need matches to get going and play your best in the third round or quarters of a tournament."

Earlier, Zverev saved a match point to defeat John Isner in day two's opening singles rubber.

Zverev, 21, dug deep to hold off the big-serving Isner to win 3-6, 7-6 (8/6), 10-7.

After dominating Friday's opening day, winning three out of the four matches, Europe's progress looked to be checked after Isner grabbed the first set against Zverev.

But rising German star Zverev showed great determination in saving a match point at 6-5 down in the second-set tie-break to level the contest.

Zverev then raced into the lead in the tiebreak before closing out for the win.

With 3 points per match win up for grabs on Sunday, #TeamEurope2018 and #TeamWorld2018 are perfectly poised for an explosive finale. "It's not easy playing one of the best players of all time, but what an amazing atmosphere. "It's just fantastic, for so many reasons. I felt I played a great match – beating Novak on any stage is great and here in Chicago makes it extra special." Under the scoring system for the Laver Cup, victories on day two are worth two points each, with victories on day three rising to three points. Kevin Anderson and Jack Sock spoiled the doubles debut of Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic but Team Europe still led Team World 3-1 after the first day of the 2018 Laver Cup.

Grigor Dimitrov, David Goffin and Kyle Edmund all won their opening singles matches Friday to give Team Europe a commanding 3-0 lead going into the evening's final doubles match.

Team World's Jack Sock and Kevin Anderson needed a tiebreaker to defeat the doubles dream team of Federer and Djokovic 6-7, 6-3, 10-6.

Sock and Anderson won the tiebreaker after Federer double-faulted to give Team World a key 5-4 lead.

Earlier in the day, Europe's Dimitrov cruised past Frances Tiafoe 6-1, 6-4, Goffin saved two match points to outlast Diego Schwartzman 6-4, 4-6, 11-9 and Edmund toppled World's Sock 6-4, 5-7, 10-6.

This is the second instalment of the Laver Cup which has been dubbed the Ryder Cup of tennis, although it lacks the tradition of golf's premier team event.

The exhibition is taking place on US soil for the first time and features 12 of the world's top players squaring off against each other in a three-day showcase which wraps up Sunday in Chicago.

The format calls for shorter matches. If the players split sets, they go straight to a 10-point tiebreaker. On Saturday, wins will be worth two points each instead of one.

Dimitrov used his precision backhand to keep Tiafoe off balance as he closed out the match with his 10th and final ace. The Bulgarian hammered 27 winners to just seven for Tiafoe.

"It's pretty nice to play indoors -&nbsp;no sun, no wind," Dimitrov said. "When you get in a&nbsp;good rhythm you just want to follow it. I think today that's what I did."

Bjorn Borg's favoured Team Europe are trying to defend their crown against Team World which is captained by the legendary John McEnroe.

Federer, Djokovic, Alexander Zverev, Dimitrov, Goffin and Edmund make up Team Europe. Federer played in the first Laver Cup but Djokovic is taking part for the first time.

Sock, Nick Kyrgios, John Isner, Tiafoe, Anderson and &nbsp;Schwartzman are representing Team World.

The event is named in honour of tennis legend Rod Laver, who won a record 200 singles titles, 11 Grand Slams and five Davis Cups for Australia.

Cecchinato cruised through the opening set as Djokovic was suffering from neck pain before the Serbian fought back after the loss of the second. His opponent, however, was the stronger in an epic fourth-set tiebreak, prevailing on his fourth match point.

The last Italian man to take part in a major semi-final was Corrado Barazzutti at the 1978 French Open.

The unseeded Cecchinato, who broke down in tears after the match, next faces Austrian Dominic Thiem for a place in Sunday's final.

Novak Djokovic storms into French Open second round

Five matches to watch at the French Open on Monday are:

Rafael Nadal (ESP x1) v Simone Bolelli (ITA)

Nadal starts his bid for an 11th French Open title against grizzled Italian veteran Simone Bolelli who got into the main draw as a lucky loser when Ukraine's Alexandr Dolgopolov withdrew with a wrist injury. Nadal has a record 79 wins against just two defeats in his Roland Garros career and arrives in Paris with his 11th titles in Monte Carlo and Barcelona and an eighth triumph in Rome.

Bolelli, 32, is ranked at 130 and has never got past the third round at Roland Garros. In five meetings with Nadal, he has won just one set.

Rogerio Dutra Silva (BRA) v Novak Djokovic (SRB x20)

A run to the semi-finals in Rome gave 2016 Roland Garros champion Djokovic hope that he is finally over the elbow injury which has seen his form dip and ranking slip to its lowest in over a decade.

Dutra Silva, 34 and ranked at 132 in the world, has never progressed beyond the second round in Paris.

But he has made two quarter-finals this year in Sao Paulo and in Istanbul which suggests a degree of clay-court proficiency.

Djokovic won their only meeting in the last 64 at the US Open in 2012, dropping just five games.&nbsp

Maria Sharapova (RUS x28) v Richel Hogenkamp (NED)

One of the most eagerly-awaited returns of recent years will be Serena Williams playing her first major since the 2017 Australian Open. The other is that of Sharapova who was refused a wildcard entry in 2017 by organisers uncomfortable with the 15-month doping ban she had just completed.

Sharapova, the Roland Garros champion in 2012 and 2014, has also been a two-time semi-finalist in Paris.

A run to the semi-finals on clay in Rome and a Madrid quarter-final spot this spring suggests the Russian is fired up.

Hogenkamp, 26 and the world 134, made the second round in Paris last year but lost her only previous meeting with Sharapova in the last 16 at Wimbledon in 2015.

Hogenkamp hasn't won a single match on tour this year, a miserable record which includes two losses on clay.

Danielle Collins (USA) v Caroline Wozniacki (DEN x2)

Former world number one Wozniacki finally broke through to her first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open this year in her 43rd major. Twice a quarter-finalist in Paris, in 2010 and 2017, the 27-year-old has endured a patchy European spring on clay with quarter-final runs at Istanbul and Rome.

Collins, a 24-year-old from Florida, is ranked 44 in the world after a shock run to the semi-finals at Miami in March.

However, she has yet to win a Grand Slam match, losing twice at the US Open and never having played at the Australian and French Opens and Wimbledon.

Guillermo Garcia-Lopez (ESP) v Stan Wawrinka (SUI x23)

Wawrinka, the 2015 champion, and runner-up to Nadal in 2017, arrives in Paris under an injury cloud having been laid low by a knee injury which had required surgery last year. Wawrinka missed three months this year before returning in Geneva last week where he won one match.

Garcia-Lopez, 34 years old and ranked 71, made the fourth round in 2014.

Wawrinka holds a 7-3 head-to-head record in a rivalry stretching &nbspback to 2005.

French Open: Five important matches to watch on Monday

This week, Roger Federer became world number 1 in ATP ranking yet again, the fifth time in his career. He dethroned Rafael Nadal from the summit position. Earlier this year, Federer won Australian Open (his record 20th Grand Slam) and subsequently became world number one after a gap of more than five years.

When I look at these pieces of information, the mind goes numb. This is simply crazy as Federer won his first Grand Slam way back in 2003 and Nadal in 2005 and one-and-a-half decades down the line these two are still (or say again) ruling the roost.

Tennis is a demanding business and if you are even iota short of your best form and fitness, the downfall is imminent. In this scenario, the run of these two greats is no less than a miracle.

Actually, It has been a while now that men's Tennis is waiting for the next big superstar. Novak Djokovic was the last of the series (as I would not include Andy Murray and Sten Wawrinka in that top league).

In Tennis, legends mark their arrival with a big thud. The announcement of their arrival is usually loud, clear and unequivocal.

I remember in 1985, teenaged Boris Becker won Wimbledon. Similarly, Pete Sampras won US Open in 1990 - Andre Agassi won Wimbledon in 1992 - Federer announced his arrival by defeating Sampras in 2001 Wimbledon - Nadal as a 19-year-old boy won French Open in 2005.

These legends embarked upon an incredible journey after their first noticeable victory as mentioned above. Some though proved to a damp squib after their impressive start. Michael Chang, Marat Safin, Lleyton Hewitt and Andy Roddick are few such names.

Last time such thud was created by Djokovic in 2008 when he won Australian Open and certainly he is a legend of the game with 12 Grand Slams.

So it has been a decade now that men's Tennis is waiting for its next superstar. In the history of Tennis, this gap is truly unparalleled. It is well manifested in the arrival of legends in the past - John McEnroe (1981), Boris Becker and Stefan Edberg (1985), Pete Sampras (1990), Andre Agassi (1992), Roger Federer (2001), Nadal (2005) and Djokovic (2008) and then there is a wait since 2008.

Fraternity believed that German Alexander Zverev could be the next possible superstar but so far he hasn't delivered a decisive impact. When Juan Martín del Potro won US Open, he was a potential next big name but he couldn’t really deliver the punch. Canadian teenager Denis Shapovalov, who is just 19 years of age, can potentially be the next big name but time only will tell that how far he goes. As such Shapovalov was impressive in Australian Open this year. He is tough competitor, big server and like Federer possess a strong single handed backhand.

But the whole credit of the situation goes to Federer & Nadal (and Djokovic as well). In a sport like Tennis, which evolves very fast it is simply incredible to compete and rule among players of different generations. The best of Tennis players in the past could hold their sway normally for a decade but Federer and Nadal are on the horizon for 15 years now. If Federer won the first Grand Slam of the year, it is Nadal who is favourite for the second Grand Slam of the year. It is French Open which would start in two weeks' time.

As two of the greatest players of all times are still ruling the scene after 12-15 years, time is ripe for men's tennis to have its next superstar.
