The United States on Friday imposed sanctions on five entities it accused of providing support to&nbsp;North&nbsp;Korea's development of weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programs, increasing pressure on Pyongyang following a recent series of missile launches.

The Treasury Department in a statement said the action targets the Ministry of Rocket Industry, which it said is a&nbsp;North&nbsp;Korean weapons of mass destruction research and development organisation directly linked to the development of new intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs).

It also designated four of the organisation's subsidiaries,&nbsp;Hapjanggang Trading Corporation,&nbsp;Korea&nbsp;Rounsan Trading Corporation, Sungnisan Trading Corporation, and Unchon Trading Corporation.

The United States and South&nbsp;Korea&nbsp;have warned that&nbsp;North&nbsp;Korea&nbsp;may be preparing to launch an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) at full range for the first time since 2017.

The projectile was fired from Sunan Airport outside the&nbsp;North&nbsp;Korean capital of Pyongyang, South&nbsp;Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said in a statement.

"It is presumed that it failed immediately after launch," the statement said. The projectile seemed to explode in mid-air shortly after liftoff, Yonhap news agency reported, citing unnamed sources.

The US&nbsp;military's Indo-Pacific Command called it a "ballistic missile launch." The command did not mention the reported failure, but condemned the launch and urged Pyongyang to refrain from further destabilising acts.

A source at Japan's Ministry of Defence also called the projectile a potential ballistic missile, Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported.

Debris fell in or near Pyongyang after the failed test, Seoul-based NK News reported, citing unnamed witnesses and a photograph of the test showing a red-tinted ball of smoke at the end of a zig-zagging rocket launch trail in the sky above the city.

"The report of a failure from Sunan is concerning because of the possibility of damage to heavily populated civilian areas," said Ankit Panda, a senior fellow at the U.S.-based Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

In 2017, an intermediate-range ballistic missile launched from another location failed shortly after liftoff and crashed into an industrial or agriculture complex in the city of Tokchon.

The Sunan airport has been the site of several recent launches, including on Feb. 27 and March 5.&nbsp;North&nbsp;Korea&nbsp;said those tests were for developing components of a reconnaissance satellite and did not identify what rocket it used, but Seoul and Washington said they were tests of a new ICBM system.

A day after it tested another missile, North Korea's state media said its defence forces tested a hypersonic missile.

The state-run Korea Central News Agency (KCNA) said North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un oversaw the tests which took place on Tuesday morning.

The state channel said the missile carrying a "hypersonic gliding vehicle hit the set target in waters 1,000 km off."

In March, North Korea had fired a tactical guided projectile which authorities said hit a target 600 kms away.

The missile tests took place even as the country has been&nbsp;facing a food shortage due to heavy rainfall in the past few months. There were also reports of coronavirus cases in the country, however, the authorities haven't confirmed the extent of the outbreak.

North Korea was one of the first countries to close its borders with China in January last year as the virus outbreak was first reported in the country.

During the National Day parade, Kim's regime showcased a parade with people wearing hazmat suits and gas masks in an attempt to showcase the country's battle against the virus.

Japan's defence ministry said no missiles had reached Japanese territory or its exclusive economic zone, and the launches did not threaten Japan's immediate security.

Pompeo said on Monday he hoped working-level talks to revive denuclearisation talks could occur "very soon."

On Tuesday, he told reporters travelling with him on a visit to Asia he did not know when this would happen but hoped US Special Representative for North Korea Stephen Biegun and his new counterpart could meet "before too long".

Pompeo and North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho had been expected to meet on the sidelines of a Southeast Asian security forum in Bangkok this week but Ri cancelled his trip, a diplomatic source said told Reuters last week.

Pompeo said on Tuesday he did not anticipate that the North Koreans would be in Bangkok but, if they were, he would look forward to a chance to meet Ri.

"We’ll see if they are there and, if they are, I’m confident we will meet," he said.
