The far-right Brothers of Italy (FDI), which is expected to win the elections this weekend, announced on Tuesday that one of its candidates had been suspended for glorifying Hitler.

After the vote on Sunday, Georgia Meloni, the leader of the FDI, could form Italy's first far-right administration. She has made an effort to distance herself from her party's neo-fascist origins without completely renunciating them.

The FDI announced in a statement that Calogero Pisano, the leader of the organisation in Agrigento, Sicily, and a member of the national leadership, has been "suspended with immediate effect."

"(He) no longer represents the party at any level and is forbidden from using its logo'," it added.

It further stated that Pisano had been called to appear before the party's leadership.

"Italy Above All" was written across a picture of Meloni that Pisano shared on Facebook in 2014.

Benito Mussolini, the fascist leader of Italy, was not the great statesman he was alluding to when he said, "This reminds me of a great statesman from 70 years ago," as he clarified underneath.

He has written other statements in favour of fascism.

The Democratic Party's deputy leader Peppe Provenzano was the first to respond when the Facebook post was made public by the La Repubblica newspaper.

"Deep roots never freeze," he tweeted, pointing out that Brothers of Italy still uses the Italian Social Movement (MSI), a group founded by Mussolini followers after World War II, as the inspiration for their logo.

The leader of the Jewish community in Rome, Ruth Dureghello, remarked that it was "unacceptable for someone who praises Hitler to sit in parliament."

The vote will take place over five days starting on Friday this week and concluding on Tuesday, according to separatist leaders in the eastern Donetsk and Lugansk areas as well as in the southern Kherson region.

These areas are at the forefront of a massive counteroffensive by Ukrainian forces that have seen them recapture hundreds of towns and villages that had been under Russian control for months.

The conflict would significantly escalate if they were integrated into Russia because Moscow could claim it was defending its own land from Ukrainian forces.

Kyiv referred to the ballots as a "sham" and declared that it would "remove" Russian threats, claiming that its forces would continue retaking territory regardless of what Moscow or its proxies declared.

A separatist leader in the Lugansk area named Denis Miroshnichenko claimed that pro-Moscow parliamentarians had resolved to hold the referendum from September 23 to 27.

Shortly later, a news website linked to the Donetsk separatist government announced the region would hold a vote on the same dates.

The discovery of opium residue in 3,500-year-old pottery fragments by Israeli archaeologists on Tuesday provided proof for the idea that the hallucinogenic narcotic was utilised in ancient funeral ceremonies.

After a number of Late Bronze Age burials were discovered during excavations in the central Israeli town of Yehud in 2012, the Israel Antiquities Authority and Weizmann Institute of Science joined forces to conduct a collaborative examination.

At the site, archaeologists discovered clay containers from the 14th century BC that resembled the poppy flowers—from which opium is manufactured.

The researchers claimed in a statement that they next looked to see if they had been used as receptacles for the substance, which earlier writing had revealed was utilised in Canaanite burial ceremonies. They discovered "opium residue in eight vessels."

According to Ron Be'eri, an archaeologist with the antiquities department, these were probably "placed in graves for ceremonial meals, rites and rituals performed by the living for their deceased family members."

During these ceremonies, "family members or a priest on their behalf" would "attempt to summon the spirit of their dead relatives... and enter an ecstatic state by using opium", Be'eri said.

But he agreed that there was still a lot to learn about its historical use. He remarked, "We can only speculate what was done with opium."

The number of Weddell seals in Antarctica may have finally been estimated accurately by scientists. The monumental task was completed utilising photographs from space and the eyes, and talents of thousands of citizen scientists.

As per Guardian, although the species can survive up to 30 years in the extreme environment of Antarctica's coastal sea ice, counting them has historically been difficult and expensive.

Former population estimates were "more back-of-the-envelope type calculations," according to Dr Michelle LaRue, associate professor of Gateway Antarctica at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand.

"The previous research was done by traditional surveyors – shipboard surveys and aerial surveys – but you can’t physically get to the entire Antarctic continent all at one time," she said.

LaRue said that the findings were "imprecise," so in 2016 she set out to produce the first estimation of the seals' baseline population using high-resolution satellite photos and the perceptive eyes of 330,000 volunteers.

“We combined [the] imagery with a web platform to conduct a citizen science campaign to find out three things: where seals are present, their abundance, and the environmental factors that influence their habitat preferences,” LaRue said.

The initiative largely relied on volunteers to look for seal indications in the satellite photographs. Participants were given photographs of a location in Antarctica to search, and they were asked to check or uncheck a box depending on whether they thought they could see a seal. The more people who clicked yes, the more efficient the habitat narrowing got.

Indian online gaming company WinZO has filed a lawsuit against Google, alleging that the internet giant's decision to permit real-money fantasy sports and rummy games on its platform is discriminatory. A copy of the lawsuit was obtained by Reuters.

The WinZO app includes real-money games in those categories as well as a number of others that Google continues to reject, such as carrom, riddles, and racing games. As a result, it will not be able to take advantage of the recently enacted Google policy.

For years, the Google division of Alphabet Inc. prohibited games involving real money in India, but this month it announced that as part of a year-long pilot test, games like fantasy sports and rummy may enter its Play Store marketplace in the nation.

In a policy update, Google stated that these two groups included games in which competitors exploited their knowledge of sporting events and athletes, planned ahead, or memorised the order of playing cards. Other game forms and how they are handled were not mentioned.

WinZO claimed in its complaint brought before the Delhi High Court that it had contacted Google on September 10 to protest the revised policy because it was "unfair."

In its lawsuit, WinZO said that because it had received no response, it was forced to seek legal assistance and that Google's decision "amounts to unfair trade practice."

"All games of skill enjoy constitutional protection," it continued.

The complaint was filed on Monday, according to a person with firsthand knowledge, and it will be heard in the coming weeks.

Regarding the case, Google refuses to comment. The business has previously stated that it was "taking a measured approach that will help us aggregate learnings" through its pilot programme.

WinZO is valued at more than $350 million and is supported by Griffin Gaming Partners, a venture capital business based in the United States.

Do you know who Nessie is? The Loch Ness monster? It is a creature from Scottish folklore and as per fables, it lives in Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands.

For decades now, people have believed in the monster's existence and many have claimed sightings and some even produced dubious "proof", grainy pictures and out-of-focus clips.

According to the Daily Record, VILN set up five cameras around the 23-mile-long loch. The feed streams live so that people could spot the creature from the comfort of their homes. Now, a Lessie enthusiast claims to have done just that.

Eagle-eyed Irishman Eoin O'Fagan claims to have captured two clips of "giant eel-like shapes" moving on the surface of the loch's water.

Talking to Daily Record O'Fagan confirmed that he has captured "two very interesting" video clips using the newly installed cameras.

"The first at the Clansman webcam Loch Ness at 20.13pm on September 6, is of a water disturbance, and a long dark shape which was recorded for 4 minutes, and was the only darkened water visible in the recording of the loch in that time."

The second, he added, was recorded by the Shoreland Lodges Webcam at 7:35 PM on September 15.

You can watch the video captured by him here:

As per him, an object moves steadily to the right of the screen and out of the webcam's field of view after making a noticeable appearance on the left near the shore.

He describes the object as "black and long in the region of 6 to 8 feet long, like an eel, or rather a very large or giant one. Its dark black colour breaks the surface occasionally as it moves to the right."

The 57-year-old said he filed the two sightings to The Official Loch Ness Monster Sightings Register but there seems to be some disagreement over whether or not they will be recorded. The man has travelled to Scotland numerous times to try and trace the monster and had his first encounter in 1987.

Also read | What do we know about Loch Ness monster? Fossil discovery suggests its existence is 'plausible' "The first at the Clansman webcam Loch Ness at 20.13pm on September 6, is of a water disturbance, and a long dark shape which was recorded for 4 minutes, and was the only darkened water visible in the recording of the loch in that time." The second, he added, was recorded by the Shoreland Lodges Webcam at 7:35 PM on September 15. You can watch the video captured by him here: × As per him, an object moves steadily to the right of the screen and out of the webcam's field of view after making a noticeable appearance on the left near the shore. He describes the object as "black and long in the region of 6 to 8 feet long, like an eel, or rather a very large or giant one. Its dark black colour breaks the surface occasionally as it moves to the right." The 57-year-old said he filed the two sightings to The Official Loch Ness Monster Sightings Register but there seems to be some disagreement over whether or not they will be recorded. The man has travelled to Scotland numerous times to try and trace the monster and had his first encounter in 1987. E.ON has informed the German government of a leak at the Isar 2 nuclear power plant which has not compromised security but could complicate the government's winter energy plan, the environment ministry said on Monday.

Isar 2, in the southern state of Bavaria, had been scheduled to go offline at the end of the year under Germany's plan to phase out nuclear power. But the war in Ukraine and the subsequent plunge in energy imports from Russia prompted a policy change, with Berlin now planning to keep two of Germany's three remaining reactors, including Isar 2, on standby into next year.

The ministry said that a week-long repair period is needed in October at the Isar 2 plant, which is run by E.ON subsidiary PreussenElektra, during which operations would stop completely.

A spokesperson for E.ON said it was confident that a framework allowing Isar 2 to add to Germany's power supply security beyond December 31 could be agreed with the government.

"Due to the necessary lead times, however, it is now necessary for the ongoing political discussions to quickly lead to a clear result and for all those involved to create planning security as quickly as possible," the spokesperson added.

Germany's environment ministry said that together with the economy ministry it was "examining the new situation and its implications for the design and implementation of the standby reserve" of the Isar 2 development.

The EEX transparency site, where operators have to place mandatory messages on plant outages to the wholesale power market, did not show an entry on Isar 2 for October.

E.ON's spokesperson said it has informed authorities as required by German law.

It has been less than two weeks since Apple released its newest iteration of the iPhone. The highly-anticipated iPhone 14 was launched amid much fanfare but it has quickly run into trouble as users complain of bizarre camera problems. Reportedly, some users have been facing problems with the phone's camera that shakes uncontrollably while strange grinding sounds come out of it. The users noted that when opening the camera on third-party apps like TikTok, Snapchat and Instagram, the iPhone starts shaking rather uncontrollably which could inadvertently damage the small delicate parts of the smartphone. Several users, including tech YouTubers, took to social media platforms to share videos of the phone shaking. A netizen complained about the situation by tweeting, "Friend's iPhone 14 pro is facing this issue while shooting from rear camera in action mode and also gets pretty warm in this particular mode. Anyone facing Similar issues @Apple @AppleSupport." Meanwhile, another posted video of the incident saying, "So uh, we’re having some issues with the 14 Pro Max camera." It is pertinent to note that users have encountered the problem only in the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models. Meanwhile, the lower-end models of the iPhone 14 have remained unscathed from the bug causing the trouble. During the launch, Apple revealed that it had made several upgrades to the camera in the new iPhone. It included a 48 MP sensor and an action mode that generated smoother videos, akin to that of a GoPro. However, the emergence of bugs has taken the sheen out of its products. With millions of iPhones already out of the shelves, it can be a big nuisance for Apple if the bug issue is not sorted quickly before other users encounter the same problem. Earlier, Apple had to deal with iPhone 14 preorder issues and iMessage and FaceTime activation problems.
