Cannabis edibles, according to Detective Chief Inspector Rob Burns of Eastern Region Special Operations Unit (ERSOU), are illegal and can cause adverse reactions like unconsciousness.

Couple of days after the US President made statements that seemingly encouraged secessionists in Taiwan, China has stepped up on the throttle. Reportedly, Beijing is set to toughen punishment for Taiwan's 'pro-independence' forces.

Couple of days after the US President made statements that seemingly encouraged secessionists in Taiwan, China has stepped up on the throttle. Reportedly, Beijing is set to toughen punishment for Taiwan's 'pro-independence' forces. Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the State Council’s Taiwan Affairs Office stated that forceful measures were required to nullify efforts being made by Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party and the United States to undermine the 'One-China' policy. “We will, according to the development and changes of the situation, further introduce new legal measures to oppose and contain the separatist attempts and acts of ‘Taiwan independence’, and resolutely safeguard national sovereignty, security and development interests.” said Zhu. The Politburo turning up the pressure dial on freedom forces in Taiwan comes in the backdrop of the Chinese foreign ministry giving a rather 'stern' reply to US President Joe Biden for his 'will defend Taiwan' remark. Read more: China replies after Biden's 'will defend Taiwan' remark Reportedly, Mao Ning, spokesperson at the ministry during a media briefing stated that China reserves the right to take necessary measures aimed at culling secessionist activities in Taiwan. "We are willing to do our best to strive for peaceful reunification. At the same time, we will not tolerate any activities aimed at secession," said Mao. Urging Washington to handle the issue 'carefully and properly' Mao further asserted that the US should not send 'wrong signals' to Taiwan's secessionist forces. "There is only one China in the world, Taiwan is part of China, and the government of the People's Republic of China is the only legitimate government of China," Mao signed off by saying. As reported by WION, China considers Taiwan a part of its sovereign territory. Any effort to undermine the One-China policy invites an aggressive response from Beijing. Reportedly, in the aftermath of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to the island nation, China sanctioned her and seven Taiwanese government officials and politicians. Under the sanctions, neither the sanctioned persons nor their families can enter mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau. The geological office of the Pacific nation of Tonga reported that a volcano north of the country's largest island has erupted eight times in the previous 48 hours and has advised ships to avoid the area.

In the last 10 days, the Home Reef volcano has erupted six times in the last 24 hours, spewing molten lava, steam, and ash at least three kilometres (nearly two miles) into the air.

The largest concentration of underwater volcanoes in the world may be found in the southwest Pacific Ocean along a seafloor ridge that runs from New Zealand to Tonga. One of them opened his eyes on September 10, 2022. The Home Reef seamount in the Central Tonga Islands has repeatedly released ash and steam plumes oozed lava, and coloured the surrounding water in the days following.

A new island emerged above the water's surface eleven hours after the eruption started. On September 14, 2022, as plumes of discoloured water swirled nearby, the Operational Land Imager-2 (OLI-2) on Landsat 9 took this natural-colour image of the nascent island. Previous studies suggest that sulphur, volcanic rock fragments, and particulate debris are present in these plumes of superheated, acidic seawater.

The island was estimated to be 4,000 square metres (1 acre) in size and 10 metres (33 feet) above sea level on September 14 by Tonga Geological Services experts. The island had expanded to span 24,000 square metres by September 20. (6 acres). Southwest of Late Island, northeast of Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai, and northwest of Mo'unga'one are the new islands' locations.

Home Reef is located in the Tonga-Kermadec subduction zone, where three tectonic plates are slamming into one another at a rate of convergence that is the fastest in the world. Here, the Pacific Plate is colliding with two smaller plates and sinking, creating one of the planet's deepest pits and most active volcanic arcs.

Islands formed by submerged volcanoes are frequently transient, however, can last for years. There have been four reported eruption periods at Home Reef, including occurrences in 1852 and 1857. Both eruptions in 1984 and 2006 produced ephemeral islands with cliffs that were 50 to 70 metres high. Small islands were momentarily constructed following both episodes.

It has been nearly three weeks since United Nations released the much-delayed report on China's human rights abuses in the Xinjiang region targeting Uyghur Muslims.

It has been nearly three weeks since United Nations released the much-delayed report on China's human rights abuses in the Xinjiang region targeting Uyghur Muslims. Now, as the world leaders and diplomats descend for the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) meeting in New York, China is facing the heat. Reportedly, diplomats and human rights activists are dialing up the pressure on Beijing by calling it to take responsibility for its actions. Fernand de Varennes, the UN’s special rapporteur on minority rights stated that 'inaction is no longer possible' on the issue. "If we allow this to go unpunished, what kind of message is being propagated?,” he added. Meanwhile, Jeffrey Prescott, deputy US ambassador to the UN questioned the credibility of the world body if the atrocities were not addressed. “How these atrocities are addressed goes ultimately to the credibility of that system, to the credibility of our international system itself. It’s deeply disheartening to see a country that has been so central to the creation of the modern UN system, and enjoys its status as a permanent member of the Security Council, so profoundly violating its commitments,” said Prescott. Read more: West mulling to table resolution at UN against China’s abuses in Xinjiang As reported extensively by WION, the report released earlier this month called China's action in Xinjiang 'crimes against humanity'. The report had been in the works for years and was released despite multiple Chinese efforts to delay or block it. After the report was released, China reacted aggressively by issuing a 122-page rebuttal, calling the report a 'patchwork of false information'. Beijing also cited carefully choreographed visits by journalists, diplomats, and, most recently, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet, as validating its claims. Read more: Why is China so angry over UN report on Xinjiang? Chinese President Xi Jinping on multiple occasions has made it clear that Islam can only exist in China if it is reformed according to Chinese orientation. The country has admitted that it runs concentration camps, which it dubs as 'vocational training camps'. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

On Tuesday (Sept 20), nearly 50 people were accused of engaging in a massive COVID-19 fraud scam involving reportedly stealing up to $250 million from a federal initiative designed to feed children in Minneapolis.

Atty. General Merrick Garland, during a press conference, said that this is probably the largest pandemic relief fraud scheme charged to dat.

The US Attorney for Minnesota described the plan as a "brazen scheme of staggering proportions," The New York Post reported.

As per federal authorities, 47 defendants carried off the scam by taking advantage of loosened rules and oversight during the pandemic. The government accused all of them of using the money to buy expensive cars and homes in Minnesota, Ohio, and even Kenya and Turkey.

Authorities claim that the Minnesota-based charity Feeding Our Future took advantage of the shift in coronavirus regulations that permitted non-profit restaurants to participate in student meal assistance programmes.

However, as per the accusations, Aimee Bock, the charity's founder, founded a network of individuals and groups to perpetrate as many as 250 fraudulent meals intended to feed children during the pandemic.

Prosecutors in a statement said, "These sites … fraudulently claimed to be serving meals to thousands of children a day within just days or weeks of being formed," The New York Post reported. Prosecutors additionally stated that a roster was made using the fake names of kids.

Atty. General Merrick Garland, during a press conference, said that this is probably the largest pandemic relief fraud scheme charged to dat. The US Attorney for Minnesota described the plan as a "brazen scheme of staggering proportions," The New York Post reported. Adrien Quatennens, Member of Parliament (MP) and the leader of France's radical-Left La France Insoumise (LFI) party, and his supporters have come under fire from feminists and anti-domestic violence campaigners.

Adrien Quatennens, Member of Parliament (MP) and the leader of France's radical-Left La France Insoumise (LFI) party, and his supporters have come under fire from feminists and anti-domestic violence campaigners. Reportedly, after Quatennens admitted to slapping his wife, his party members applauded his move, much to the ire of women's rights activists. Jean-Luc Mélenchon, a former Presidential candidate of LFI blamed the police, media, and social media for prying on a marriage that was on the verge of breaking whilst praising Quatennens for his 'dignity and courage'. Similarly, another LFI leader named Sophia Chikirou heaped praises for Quatennens' “honesty and self-sacrifice” while advising the public to leave the couple alone. Seeing the situation was already delicate, Mélenchon and Chikirou's statements added fuel to the fire. Fondation des Femmes (Women’s Foundation) released a statement urging Mélenchon to educate himself about marital violence. Meanwhile, feminist movement Nous Toutes (All of Us) and its leader Caroline de Haas wrote, “The violence at the heart of a couple is unacceptable, whatever conflicts are present...I send all my support to women victims everywhere in the world.” “If Adrien Quatennens’ statement could be viewed with a certain amount of sympathy (not for the slap of course), Jean-Luc Mélenchon has just ruined that.” said Anne-Laurence Petel, centre right Renaissance party Read more: India condemns Leicester violence and vandalism of Hindu religious premises It is pertinent to note that Quatennens only came out with an apology statement after the information of the assault on his wife was leaked to the French press. Afterward, Quatennens released a statement to arrest the slide. In a statement posted on Twitter, Quatennens admitted to the attack. He acknowledged the relationship between the couple had grown strained and that during an argument, he 'seized her wrist' and took away her mobile phone after which the assault transpired. “To get it back, she jumped on my back. I got away and in getting away she hit her elbow. In a context of extreme tension and mutual aggression, I slapped her.I profoundly regret this action and I have said sorry many times." read the statement. Quatennens is one of the leading faces of the left party. It was his campaign that stopped French President Emmanuel Macron from reaching a working majority in this year's parliamentary elections. However, in the immediate aftermath of the controversy, he has quit his post as the party co-ordinator. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken will seek to establish a new community of Atlantic countries on Tuesday by investing an additional $100 million in programmes that promote the environment and marine security, as reported by AFP.

Blinken will collaborate with counterparts from Angola, Brazil, Ghana, Portugal, and Senegal in New York for the UN General Assembly as part of a new alliance of about 10 nations, a senior State Department official said.

"The United States hopes to work with Atlantic countries to develop a new framework for regular Atlantic cooperation, through which our countries can establish and carry out a shared approach to advancing our shared goals in the region," the official said on condition of anonymity.

The programme comes at a time when President Joe Biden's administration is focusing more on international environmental cooperation, especially ocean health.

The Pacific is already a top concern for the government since it is thought that with China's rapid ascent, there could be war there.

The new Atlantic grouping, according to the official, will work to create a "sustainable ocean economy" and support ocean health, especially by addressing climate change and marine habitats.

Additionally, it will consider how to strengthen marine governance, such as by enhancing collaboration on search and rescue missions and countering piracy.

The Biden administration will invest an additional $100 million in the endeavour the next year, subject to legislative approval, on top of the $400 million it currently spends a year on maritime activities in the Atlantic, the official said.

The project involves Brazil, where President Jair Bolsonaro — a business ally and longtime sceptic of climate change — is behind in the polls as he runs for re-election weeks before elections in the Atlantic giant.
