Newly appointed Home Secretary Suella Braverman is expected to use the upcoming Conservative Party annual conference to bring in a legislation to ban the migrants crossing the English Channel from seeking asylum.

Reportedly, the new legislation is designed to create a blanket ban on anyone entering the UK illegally through boats across the channel.

"It’s right that we extend the hand of friendship to those in genuine need," said Braverman.

"Parts of the system aren't delivering. We need to end abuse of the rules and cut down on those numbers that aren’t meeting the needs of our economy," she added.

According to experts, Braverman's proposal is touch different from her predecessor Priti Patel's plan as the former is looking to impose a complete blanket ban on the migrants.

As reported by WION, the former interior minister in April this year had brought the 'Rwanda Asylum Policy' under which aliens arriving in the UK through 'illegal' means would be sent to the African country of Rwanda to seek asylum.

However, before Patel & co. could send the first deportation flight, it was grounded due to legal challenges. The incident happened in June and since then, not a single deportation has taken place as the case continues to linger in the UK courts.

The migrant crossover across the English Channel has been swelling up, breaking new records with alarming frequency.

Up until August over 22,557 migrants had crossed the channel. Comparatively, only 28,526 migrants crossed the Channel last year, while the number stood below 9,000 in 2020.

The coveted Nansen Award, given out by the United Nations Refugee Agency on Tuesday, was given to former German chancellor Angela Merkel, who was praised for her commitment to defending asylum seekers while in office.

The UNHCR selection committee praised Merkel's "leadership, courage, and compassion" in reference to the more than 1.2 million refugees and asylum seekers who were welcomed by Germany in 2015 and 2016 during the height of the migration crisis brought on primarily by the conflict in Syria.

The lady who served as the head of the German government for 16 years at the time claimed the scenario "put our European values to the test as seldom before. It was no more and no less than a humanitarian imperative."

The UN refugee agency emphasised how she had urged her fellow Germans to reject polarising nationalism and to be "compassionate and open-minded" in its statement.

"By helping more than a million refugees to survive and rebuild, Angela Merkel displayed great moral and political courage," UNHCR chief Filippo Grandi said in a statement, praising her will to stand up for human rights, humanitarian values, and international law.

The selection committee emphasised that Merkel was the driving force behind Germany's joint efforts to welcome and assist them in integrating into society in addition to safeguarding those forced to flee conflict.

It recognises persons, organisations, or groups that have gone above and beyond the call of duty to safeguard refugees and other displaced people.

At a ceremony in Geneva on October 10, Merkel will collect her award and the $150,000 (151,000 euros) in prize money.

On that occasion, four regional champions will also be recognised. Each will receive a $50,000 reward.

Three scientists jointly won this year’s Nobel Prize in physics on Tuesday for their work on quantum information science that has significant applications, for example in the field of encryption.

Frenchman Alain Aspect, American John F. Clauser and Austrian Anton Zeilinger were cited by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences for discovering the way that particles known as photons can be linked, or “entangled,” with each other even when they are separated by large distances.

“Quantum information science is a vibrant and rapidly developing field,” said Eva Olsson, a member of the Nobel committee. “It has broad and potential implications in areas such as secure information transfer, quantum computing and sensing technology."

“Its origin can be traced to that of quantum mechanics,” she said. “Its predictions have opened doors to another world, and it has also shaken the very foundations of how we interpret measurements.”

Speaking by phone at a news conference after the announcement, Zeilinger said he was “still kind of shocked” at hearing he had received the award.

“But it’s a very positive shock,” said Zeilinger, 77, who is based at the University of Vienna.

Clauser, Aspect, and Zeilinger have figured in Nobel speculation for more than a decade. In 2010 they won the Wolf Prize in Israel, seen as a possible precursor to the Nobel.

While physicists often tackle problems that appear at first glance to be far removed from everyday concerns - tiny particles and the vast mysteries of space and time - their research provides the foundations for many practical applications of science.

The Nobel committee said Clauser, 79, developed quantum theories first put forward in the 1960s into a practical experiment. Aspect, 75, was able to close a loophole in those theories, while Zeilinger demonstrated a phenomenon called quantum teleportation that effectively allows information to be transmitted over distances.

“Using entanglement you can transfer all the information which is carried by an object over to some other place where the object is, so to speak, reconstituted,” said Zeilinger. He added that this only works for tiny particles.

“It is not like in the Star Trek films (where one is) transporting something, certainly not the person, over some distance,” he said. When he began his research, Zeilinger said the experiments were “completely philosophical without any possible use or application.”

Since then, the laureates’ work has been used to develop the fields of quantum computers, quantum networks and secure quantum encrypted communication.

German energy major RWE said on Tuesday that it will phase out coal power by 2030 due to concerns that the country's intentions to do away with fossil fuels may be in jeopardy in the wake of the energy crisis brought on by Russia's war in Ukraine.

In response to Russia's reduction in gas deliveries to Germany during the conflict in Ukraine, Berlin was compelled to take the unconventional step of temporarily restarting coal power plants.

"We will need an earlier coal exit because this is the only way to continue to achieve the country's climate protection goals," RWE chief executive Markus Krebber said at a press conference. "As more coal is needed in the short term, thereby leading to rising carbon dioxide emissions."

He said, moving the company's ambitions up by eight years, "We, as RWE, are making a significant contribution to this -- we will end coal-based power generation in 2030."

German coal-fired power stations have been gradually being shut down over the past few years with the goal of completely eliminating the use of fossil fuels.

But the invasion of Ukraine by Russia has derailed preparations, as Berlin accuses Moscow of cutting off its energy supply to it as payback for its backing for Kyiv.

In response to Iran's brutal crackdown on protests spurred by Mahsa Amini's death, the United States would impose "further costs," President Joe Biden said, prompting Iran to call the United States "hypocritical" on Tuesday.

Amini, 22, was declared dead on September 16, just a few days after the infamous morality police had jailed the Iranian Kurd for allegedly breaking the law mandating women to dress modestly and wear hijabs.

The greatest wave of protests to hit Iran in three years, as well as a response by the authorities that resulted in hundreds of protestors being killed and more than 1,000 being detained, were spurred by outrage over her death.

In a statement, Biden stated that "this week, the United States will be imposing further costs on perpetrators of violence against peaceful protesters. We will continue holding Iranian officials accountable and supporting the rights of Iranians to protest freely."

Biden expressed "grave concern" about reports of the escalating crackdown on protestors and asserted that Washington supported "all the citizens of Iran who are inspiring the world with their bravery."

Following the use of tear gas and paintball guns by Iranian riot police against hundreds of students shouting "woman, life, liberty" on Sunday night at Tehran's Sharif University of Technology, rights organisations expressed grave concern. Video footage also showed detainees being taken away with fabric hoods covering their heads.

The US president made no mention of any potential penalties against Iran, which is currently the target of punishing US economic measures partly because of its contentious nuclear programme.

Competition is good, it pushes you to do better, and aim higher. When it comes to an auction competition or rather a competitive bidding can be the one thing that makes it a success. That's what happened in France, a bidding war over a vase worth a little less than $2,000 led to it being sold for a whopping $7.59 million. The total came to $8.99 million after factoring in the seller's fee.

The vase in question is an "ordinary" Chinese vase, but it was mistakenly presumed by bidders to be a rare 18th-century artefact, which resulted in the object being sold at around 4,000 times its estimated value.

As per Guardian, the vase which is a tianqiuping style porcelain was put up for auction by a French woman living in the nation's overseas territory. It was left to her by her late mother. She had not even seen the 54-centimetre tall vase and had arranged for it to be directly picked from her mother's estate in Brittany.

The auction house was informed that it belonged to the seller's grandmother who was a Parisian collector "in the last century."

One of the Osenat Auction House, auctioneers Jean-Pierre called the incident "a crazy story". The auction house described the vase as "quite ordinary" and said that it dated from the 20th century. An expert at the auction house said that it would have been extremely rare if it had been 200 years older.

Taiwan likes US more than China: Survey

To keep China at bay in the semiconductor competition, the Joe Biden administration is mulling another round of restrictions on the export of US semiconductor technology.

To keep China at bay in the semiconductor competition, the Joe Biden administration is mulling another round of restrictions on the export of US semiconductor technology. According to sources, the Commerce Department is expected to bring forth a package of rules to categorise which semiconductor technologies can be exported to China. Washington is expected to bring the sledgehammer on the export of advanced semiconductors and tools for logic and memory chip production that can be used for supercomputing and artificial intelligence. Additionally, the department will look to codify the previous guidance issued to specific companies. This is not the first time the US has moved to choke off Chinese firms' supply of chips. In 2020, former president Donald Trump's administration banned suppliers from selling chips made using US technology to tech giant Huawei without a special license. Lately, the Joe Biden government has also given signs regarding such restrictions. As reported by WION, the US officials in early September told NVIDIA to stop exporting two top computing chips for artificial intelligence work to China The move was aimed at crippling Chinese firms' ability to carry out advanced work like image recognition and advanced computing. Read more: US officials order Nvidia to halt sales of top AI chips to China Why the restrictions? For years, the US led the technology battle with China. However, the tips have recently scaled in Beijing's favour. As reported by WION, according to a study presented by Special Competitive Studies Project (SCSP), US could lose the tech competition to China if it does not take action on the 5G, AI, and microchip core fronts. The report added that the tech race would be going through its critical phase in the 2025-2030 period. During this window, Beijing might be able to edge out the USA if the current trend continues. Read more: China could pip USA in the tech war by the end of the decade: Report The “Mid-Decade Challenges to National Competitiveness” report further shed light on the fact that China has been making rapid advancements in the aforementioned core areas. India is making giant strides in presenting itself as an alternative to the world's factory i.e China. The country exported more than $1 billion worth of iPhones in five months since April, per a Bloomberg report. The total exports till March 2023 are expected to reach $2.5 billion which will be double compared to the same yearly period through March 2022. Currently, iPhone 11,12 and 13 models dominate the export from the South Asian country to Europe and West Asia Although the total share of iPhone production from India is still far less comparatively, the recent trend suggests that the country is quickly bridging the gap. As reported by WION, in what comes as a landmark shift, Apple, last week officially announced that it was manufacturing its latest, flagship iPhone 14 in India alongside China. “The new iPhone 14 lineup introduces groundbreaking new technologies and important safety capabilities. We’re excited to be manufacturing iPhone 14 in India,” read the company's statement. Read more: It's official: Apple starts manufacturing iPhone 14 in India By manufacturing iPhone 14 in India, roughly at the same time as in China, the Cupertino-based company is attempting to reduce the gap and bring it on par with China for future models. Previously, Apple manufactured its iPhone 13 model in India, six-seven months after it was launched. According to reports, Apple is expected to move five per cent of its global production of iPhone 14 to India by the end of the year. The company has kept an ambitious target of manufacturing 25 per cent of all iPhones by 2025 in India, per analysts at JP Morgan. In the aftermath of the United States Supreme Court overturning Roe vs Wade, abortion has become a prohibitive act in several states. With the list of patients requiring the procedure increasing, Planned Parenthood, a nonprofit that provides sexual health care in the US and globally has announced plans to launch its first mobile abortion clinic. Reportedly, the NGO will launch a 37-foot RV (Recreational Vehicle) in Southern Illinois that will travel to borders of adjoining states that do not allow termination of pregnancy. The mobile abortion clinic will house a lab, two exam rooms, and a waiting room. WATCH | Gravitas: US Supreme Court strikes down abortion rights × According to Planned Parenthood, initially, the clinic will provide medication abortions up to 11 weeks of gestation. However, after a few months, it will start providing surgical abortions. "Our goal is to reduce the hundreds of miles that people are having to travel now in order to access care...and meet them where they are," Yamelsie Rodriguez, President of Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region and Southwest Missouri was quoted as saying by NPR. Read more: Louisiana woman carrying skull-less foetus travels over 2,000 km to New York for abortion “The mobile abortion clinic is a way to reduce travel times and distances in order to meet patients at the Illinois border. This will make a dramatic impact on their access,” added Dr. Colleen McNicholas, chief medical officer for Planned Parenthood’s St. Louis office. While Illinois has banned abortion, the neighbouring states of Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee and several others in the South and Midwest have done. Hence, Illinois has become the hotspot where aggrieved pregnant women are pilgrimaging to get access to abortion facilities. Officials at Parent Parenthood say they may add additional mobile units if the test concept takes off. In a post-Roe world, it could be a means to provide pregnancy termination facilities to women across the state lines. As reported by WION, the conservative-dominated court in June, earlier this year declared that individual states can now legalise or restrict the procedure on their own, overturning the historic "Roe v. Wade" ruling from 1973 that established a woman's right to an abortion. The court's decision goes against a global trend that has seen abortion restrictions loosen up, particularly in nations like India, Ireland, Argentina, Mexico, and Colombia where the Catholic Church continues to have significant sway. Environment ministers from about 50 countries will gather in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Monday for a "pre-COP27" climate summit, with rich nations likely to come under pressure to raise spending to combat climate change.

Environment ministers from about 50 countries will gather in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Monday for a "pre-COP27" climate summit, with rich nations likely to come under pressure to raise spending to combat climate change. The talks in the DRC's capital, Kinshasa, are informal but meant to allow various countries and green groups to take stock of political positions ahead of COP27 - the United Nations climate gathering of world leaders in Egypt next month. An opening ceremony will take place in the Congolese parliament building in Kinshasa, followed by discussions on mitigating climate change, and providing funding for countries already damaged by global heating and severe weather events. Delegates from about 50 countries are expected to attend the talks, including United States climate envoy John Kerry. "The emphasis will certainly be on support from industrialised countries to countries in the south," a Western diplomat recently told AFP. The last UN climate summit, COP26 in Glasgow in November 2021, reaffirmed the goal, agreed in Paris in 2015 - of limiting the rise in the Earth's average temperature to well below 2.0 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and pursuing efforts to limit it to 1.5 C. That goal may already be beyond reach as the Earth's temperature is already 1.2 C higher than before the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century. Poorer countries had pushed at Glasgow for a financial mechanism to address losses and damage caused by climate change. But wealthier nations, the largest polluters, rejected the call and the participants agreed instead to start a "dialogue" on financial compensation for damages. Climate justice Egypt, which is hosting COP27, has made implementing the pledge to curb global heating the priority of the November summit. Poorer countries are again likely to remind their richer counterparts of the need to increase financial support. The latter have so far failed to deliver on their promise to provide $100 billion a year to help developing countries limit climate change. Demands for climate justice were front and centre of a protest in Kinshasa last month, where young Congolese activists chanted slogans and demanded that world leaders take swift action rather than repeat old promises. The Congolese government is also expected to drive home the message that it requires funding to protect its vast rainforests, which act as a carbon sink. Around 30 billion tonnes of carbon are stored across the Congo Basin, researchers estimated in a study for Nature in 2016. The figure is roughly equivalent to three years of global emissions. However, the central African nation in July launched an auction for 30 oil and gas blocs, ignoring warnings from environmentalists that exploiting them could harm ecosystems and release vast amounts of heat-trapping gases. One of the poorest countries in the world, the DRC argues that drilling for oil and gas could help diversify its economy and benefit the Congolese people. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Clearing the mystery over the health of the country's nine-year-old Mars mission, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) declared the 'Mangalyaan' Mars orbiting spacecraft non-recoverable. This confirmation from ISRO comes after there were reports of the spacecraft having lost communication with the ground station and run out of fuel. Finally, #ISRO puts to rest the confusion over #MangalyaanMission After 8yrs of orbiting #Mars and generating terabytes of data…The #indian #satellite has gone for eternal rest.. @isro says fuel must have been exhausted, sat couldn’t look at sun, so declared non-recoverable https://t.co/uIZqt7Jv1o pic.twitter.com/8w6ougeWHP — Sidharth.M.P (@sdhrthmp) October 3, 2022 × ISRO launched Mangalyaan or Mars Orbiter Mission (MoM) on November 3, 2013, and the spacecraft entered the Martian orbit on September 24, 2014, after a 300-days-long interplanetary journey. Designed for a six-month operational life in Martian orbit, the MoM spacecraft worked for almost eight years and generated ample quantities of scientific data about the red planet. "ISRO deliberated that the propellant (fuel onboard the spacecraft) must have been exhausted, and therefore, the desired attitude pointing could not be achieved (spacecraft's solar panels could not point towards the sun) for sustained power generation," read the statement from ISRO. Based on the analysis, the Indian space agency declared the spacecraft non-recoverable and as having reached the 'end of its life'. As recently as last week, speaking at an event commemorating '8 Years of Mangalyaan', a senior ISRO scientist shared specific details on the MoM. "Right now, we have no fuel left, to be able to change the geometry of the spacecraft to the sun" the scientist is heard saying in the video. It was also elaborated that the spacecraft had to operate during back-to-back, long-duration eclipses (periods when the shadow of Mars falls on it, thus hindering its ability to receive solar energy on its panels and charge its batteries)." Sr #ISRO scientist says “Right now, there is no fuel left..we are not able to change the geometry between the spacecraft and the sun”.. this is from last week’s @isro event titled ‘8 yrs of #Mangalyaan #MarsOrbiter ‘ ISRO foresaw the inevitable! Hoping for a statement on MoM pic.twitter.com/JXIHUlNF8K — Sidharth.M.P (@sdhrthmp) October 3, 2022 × "From April 1, 2022, we have had back-to-back long eclipses that spanned anywhere from 30 minutes to seven-and-a-half hours...the one we really survived was an eclipse that lasted six and a half hours," the scientist says. Read more: When an ISRO scientist said 'Mangalyaan' was running really low on fuel The scientist also added that the spacecraft did a critical manoeuvre in 2017 and ended up burning 20 kilogrammes of its 33 kg fuel. After that manoeuvre, the spacecraft had only 13 kg of fuel left, of which 2.5 kg is required every year for basic manoeuvres to remain in orbit. Finally, it was added that there is only around 2 or 2.4 kg of fuel left in the spacecraft and that quantity won't be sufficient for any future manoeuvres. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Marina Ovsyannikova, a Russian TV journalist who made headlines by hijacking a state television broadcast to denounce the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has been put on Moscow's wanted list after she allegedly escaped house arrest. "Last night, my ex-wife left the place that the court assigned her for house arrest and, together with my 11-year-old daughter, fled in an unknown direction," Ovsyannikova's ex-husband was quoted as saying by state-run news outlet Russia Today. Reportedly, Ovsyannikova was awaiting a trial and had been put under a two months house arrest in August. She faces up to 10 years in prison if found guilty of spreading fake news about Moscow's armed forces.
