Britain on Wednesday joined the list of countries to have come forward in the last few days and pledged to donate air defence systems to Ukraine in the wake of incessant Russian missile attacks. North Korea's missile launching spree continued on Wednesday as it test-fired two long-range strategic cruise missiles, the state media informed. Reportedly, leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the exercise and hailed his country's yet another successful display of nuclear strike capability. He added that the country should continue to expand its nuclear arsenal capabilities to deter enemies. "We should continue to expand the operational sphere of the nuclear strategic armed forces to resolutely deter any crucial military crisis and war crisis at any time and completely take the initiative in it," state media Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) quoted him as saying. KCNA stated that the pair of missiles travelled almost 2,000 kilometres over the sea and managed to successfully hit the targets, which it didn't elaborate upon. As reported by WION, earlier this week, North Korea confirmed that its recent missile tests included 'tactical nuclear' drills. Former US President Donald Trump will have to appear physically for a deposition and testify under oath next week after a US District Judge rejected his request in a rape defamation lawsuit. “The defendant should not be permitted to run the clock out on plaintiff’s attempt to gain a remedy for what allegedly was a serious wrong,” said Judge Lewis A. Kaplan while rejecting Trump's lawyer's request. “Mr. Trump has conducted extensive discovery of the plaintiff, yet produced virtually none himself. Given his conduct so far in this case, Mr. Trump’s position regarding the burdens of discovery in this case is inexcusable," the judge added. Jean Carroll, a writer who alleged that Trump raped him in a dressing room at the Bergdorf Goodman department store in late 1995 or early 1996. Carrol filed the lawsuit in November 2019 after Trump, who was in his third year of office at the time, told a reporter that Carroll made up the rape accusation and that he did not know her and "she's not my type". Trump has denied raping Carroll and charged that she invented the allegation in order to promote her book. Read more: Trump in trouble: Writer E. Jean Carroll plans new lawsuit after accusing Trump of rape After the judgement, Trump's lawyer Alina Habba said, “We look forward to establishing on the record that this case is, and always has been, entirely without merit.” Trump's side argued that he should have immunity under the Westfall Act. Under the said act, government employees are protected from civil lawsuits, if they are acting in their capacity as government officials. If Trump was indeed acting within the scope of his duties as a federal employee, which his side claims, then the US government becomes the defendant in the case. A 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals had ruled last month that Trump was a federal employee when he made the comment but asked another court to decide if the statements occurred during the scope of his employment. Meanwhile, Carroll's attorney welcomed the ruling and said they will be filing a second lawsuit next month to seek damages for the alleged rape. Nawaz Sharif to end his three-year-long self-exile, return to Pakistan soon: PML-N leader

The European Union will unveil proposals next week to launch joint gas buying within months and develop an alternative gas price benchmark, but a meeting of EU countries on Wednesday left it unresolved whether the package would include a gas price cap.

The European Union will unveil proposals next week to launch joint gas buying within months and develop an alternative gas price benchmark, but a meeting of EU countries on Wednesday left it unresolved whether the package would include a gas price cap. The 27-country EU is plotting its next move to tame soaring energy prices and shield consumers from surging bills, as Europe heads into a winter of scarce Russian gas, a cost of living crisis and the looming threat of recession. After a meeting of EU energy ministers in Prague, EU energy commissioner Kadri Simson said the European Commission would lay out plans to develop an alternative EU gas price benchmark, and quickly launch joint gas buying among EU countries. Simson said, however, it was still unclear if there was enough support among countries for a price cap on gas used for power generation to be added to the October 18 package; a move many countries have sought. "We will see over the weekend how we can proceed with capping the gas for power generation, if this is at that stage that we can say that there is a broad majority of member states supporting this measure," she said, adding that the package would set out how a "temporary mechanism" to limit gas prices could work, and the risks it would entail. Czech Industry Minister Jozef Sikela said ministers had agreed joint gas buying should launch by next summer, and that the Czech Republic - which holds the EU's rotating presidency - would call an emergency meeting of ministers in November to approve the upcoming proposals. "I firmly believe that today's meeting has helped to bridge the divergent views between the member states," Sikela said. Iberian example With gas prices almost 90 per cent higher than a year ago, most EU countries say they want a gas price cap, but have struggled to agree on its design - be it a price cap on all gas, pipeline gas, or just gas used to produce electricity. Spain and Portugal capped the price of gas used in power generation in June, which helped curb local power prices. Support has built among other EU countries to roll it out EU-wide, although some warn it could raise gas demand across the bloc since Spain's gas use increased under the measure. The meeting outcome aligned with many of the measures suggested in a proposal by Germany and the Netherlands who warn broad gas price caps could leave Europe struggling to attract supplies while swerving the cap that 15 other EU states have urged Brussels to propose. The German and Dutch proposal, seen by Reuters, backed an alternative benchmark gas price, joint gas buying and negotiating lower prices with non-Russian suppliers as well as tighter targets to save gas this winter. Norway's energy minister Terje Aasland, who joined Wednesday's meeting along with other European non-EU members, said his country "doesn't recommend" a gas price cap. European gas prices surged after Russia slashed gas deliveries to Europe following its invasion of Ukraine, blaming the cuts on Western sanctions imposed over the conflict. EU countries have already rushed through emergency energy windfall profit levies, gas storage filling obligations, and electricity demand curbs to address the surge in energy prices. But the pressure to agree more EU-wide measures has increased after Germany said it would spend up to $194 billion to shield its consumers and businesses from high energy costs - prompting a backlash from some countries about the uneven rollout of national support. Former Los Angeles City Council President Nury Martinez has resigned from her council seat, a day after stepping down as the president of the council over racist comments caught on tape. Martinez informed her decision via a press release on Wednesday after an audiotape went viral where she could be heard making racist remarks to belittle her council colleagues and their children. “It is with a broken heart that I resign my seat for Council district 6, the community I grew up in and my home,” said Martinez in the statement. As reported by WION, Martinez resigned from the top council post on Monday and took a holiday on Tuesday but the incessant pressure from all quarters forced her to give up the council seat on Wednesday Read more: LA City Council president resigns after her racist audiotape goes viral Reportedly, apart from the public, the top Democrats including President Joe Biden called on her and other two council members to resign altogether from the council. Taking responsibility for her actions, Martinez on Monday said there were no excuses for her actions. “I sincerely apologize to the people I hurt with my words: to my colleagues, their families, especially to Mike, Sean, and your son," she said in a statement released by her office. In the leaked tape, which was recorded more than a year ago and remained private until Sunday, Martinez referred to Councilman Mike Bonin’s son as “Parece changuito,” or “like a monkey.” “They’re raising him like a little white kid which I was like, this kid needs a beatdown. Let me take him around the corner and then I’ll bring him back," she could be heard saying. Alex Jones, the infamous conspiracy theorist, has been ordered by a jury in the United States to pay $965 million in damages to the families of the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting, where a gunman killed 20 children and six staff members.

This is the second tranche of damages that Jones has been ordered to pay after a Texas court last year ordered the founder of InfoWars to pay $49.3 million to separate parents of the shooting incident.

The judgement followed a three-week trial where both parties gave testimonies in Waterbury, Connecticut. After nearly a decade of claiming that the Sandy Hook shooting was a staged government plot only to enforce gun control laws, Jones has acknowledged that the attack was 100 per cent real.

As reported extensively by WION, Jones was found liable for damages in a trio of lawsuits last year. Since then, he has been running from pillar to post to plead his innocence.

Reportedly, in the final round of testimonies last week, Jones gave a rather impassioned speech and said, "I've already said I'm sorry hundreds of times, and I'm done saying I'm sorry."

The dramatic testimony managed to bring a few teary eyes in the courtroom but the six-member jury was not to be swayed.

However, this is not the end of Jones' problems. He is expected to face a third defamation trial which takes place in Texas later this year, in connection with the shooting.

For years, Jones used lies to drive traffic to his Infowars website and managed to create a following. However, earlier this year, Free Speech Systems, the parent company of InfoWars filed for US bankruptcy protection.
