The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) has been declared a terrorist organisation and banned by the Indian government. The Ministry of Home Affairs on Thursday released a notification stating TRF was banned under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) for terror activities, including recruitment and infiltration of terrorists from across the border into the union territory of Jammu & Kashmir. “TRF is recruiting youth through online medium for furtherance of terrorist activities and has been also involved in carrying out propaganda on terror activities, recruitment of terrorists, infiltration of terrorists and smuggling of weapons and narcotics from Pakistan into J&K," read the notification. The notification added that TRF's activities were detrimental to India's security. “The activities of the TRF are detrimental for the security and sovereignty of India. A large number of cases have been registered against the members/associates of the TRF relating to planning of killing of security personnel and civilians of J&K, co-coordinating and transporting weapons to support proscribed terrorist organisations." Ever since India abrogated the controversial Article 370, the funding routes of most terror outfits have dried up. With the UT more homogeneously assimilated with the rest of India, the terror outfits like TRF are attempting to recreate the chaos of 1989 when Kashmiri Pandits were driven out of their homes in a mass exodus. Lashkar and Jaish-e-Mohammad have been alleged to have concocted the name of the banned terror outfit. TRF allowed Jaish and LeT to pull the strings whilst maintaining plausible deniability. According to data released by the J&K Police, the most number of terrorists (108) to be killed in 2022 in the valley were from TRF. “During the year 2022, a total of 93 successful encounters took place in Kashmir in which 172 terrorists, including 42 foreign terrorists, were neutralised. The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Thursday barred the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) from ousting former prime minister Imran Khan as the chairman of his Tehreek-e-Insaaf party.

The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Thursday barred the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) from ousting former prime minister Imran Khan as the chairman of his Tehreek-e-Insaaf party. The court took up the case after Khan filed the petition on Wednesday. Khan and his counsel argued that ECP's decision, based on an alleged incorrect statement of assets in relation to the Toshakhana (national depository) case was unlawful and contrary to the constitution. "The cognizance and exercise of jurisdiction by the ECP for debarring Imran Khan from holding the office of the party chairman on the basis of alleged incorrect statement of assets and subsequent disqualification is unlawful and contrary to the constitution," said Khan in the petition filed. Read more: Toshakhana case: Dubai-based businessman says gifts given to ex-PM Imran Khan sold to him Khan's lawyer Barrister Ali Zafar pleaded that ECP dod not have the authority to remove the former PM as the PTI boss. “If there is a matter of filing false statements, the election commission becomes a plaintiff. It does not give a verdict [as] it is not within its jurisdiction." Justice Jawad Hassan presiding over the case issued a notice to the ECP and directed the body to file its reply by January 11. Notably, the ECP last month initiated the process to remove Khan after the verdict in the Toshakhana case. The Commission asserted that Khan was disqualified under Article 63(1p) for making false statements and incorrect declaration”. Meta's subsidiary WhatsApp on Thursday announced that users will now be able to use proxy servers to access the services in countries and regions where the messaging app is blocked.

Meta's subsidiary WhatsApp on Thursday announced that users will now be able to use proxy servers to access the services in countries and regions where the messaging app is blocked. "Today we’re launching proxy support for WhatsApp users all over the world. What this means is we’re putting the power into people’s hands to maintain access to WhatsApp if their connection is blocked or disrupted," read a statement released by the company. "Choosing a proxy enables you to connect to WhatsApp through servers set up by volunteers and organizations around the world dedicated to helping people communicate freely." WhatsApp also referred users to the instructions on how to set up a proxy server and re-establish the connection. The service is available to anyone that has the latest version of WhatsApp. A proxy server, in layman terms, is an 'intermediary' between the users and the internet. It allows them to circumvent censorship attempts and other restrictions to access web services. WATCH | WION Fineprint: 500 million WhatsApp users at risk of data breach × The rollout of the service has been done so keeping in mind the countries where internet lockdowns, especially concerning WhatsApp cause inconvenience to regular users. WhatsApp, in its announcement, cited the example of Iran where internet services have often been disconnected by the regime. "Disruptions like we’ve seen in Iran for months on end, deny people’s human rights and cut people off from receiving urgent help. Though in case these shutdowns continue, we hope this solution helps people wherever there is a need for secure and reliable communication." When the anti-hijab protests in Iran were still in their infancy, the Iranian regime, anticipating the scale of it, restricted access to the internet as well as social media sites such as Instagram and WhatsApp. Internet watchdog NetBlocks reported a "nation-scale loss of connectivity" on network providers in Iran. WhatsApp's new feature allows ordinary Iranians to bypass the shutdowns and access the app and its services. Read more: Iran restricts access to WhatsApp, Instagram amid intensifying protests The Meta-owned platform added that messages on the proxy server will also remain end-to-end encrypted, meaning no one apart from the users will be able to access the message or data. "Your personal messages will still be protected by end-to-end encryption, ensuring they stay between you and the person you’re communicating with and are not visible to anyone in between, not the proxy servers, WhatsApp, or Meta." The two latest instances of men urinating on female fellow passengers on two separate Air India flights have sparked significant outrage. The aviation regulator, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), slammed the Tata Group-owned airline, stating its behaviour was "unprofessional" and resulted in "systemic failure" in reference to the November incident where a drunken male is reported to have urinated on a senior citizen. The First Information Report (FIR) states that despite the incident taking place late last year (November 2022), Air India finally reported it to the police on 4th January 2023 against the offender, a Mumbai-based man Shankar Mishra.

In addition to imposing a 30-day flying ban on the Mishra, Air India has begun an investigation into the event that happened on one of its flights from New York to Delhi on 26th November 2022.

Mishra was fired by his employer, US financial services company Wells Fargo as the VP of India business, on Friday.

“Wells Fargo holds employees to the highest standards of professional and personal behavior and we find these allegations deeply disturbing. This individual has been terminated from Wells Fargo. A similar incident occurred on an Air India flight between Paris and Delhi in December of last year when a male passenger who was allegedly intoxicated urinated on a female passenger's blanket.

Airport authorities told news agency PTI that the man was detained by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) as the plane touched down but was subsequently released after the two passengers reached a "mutual solution" and the accused provided a "written apology."

What are Air India's forward plans and DGCA's statutory amid such incidents?

In a letter to Air India's staff on Friday, the airline CEO Campbell Wilson emphasised that anyone who violates flight regulations will be subject to prompt action. He emphasised the significance of reporting unfavourable situations on flights to authorities, even if the crew thinks the issue has been rectified.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) also issued an advisory on Friday, outlining how to deal with unruly passengers on board and who is responsible for what under the rules. All scheduled airlines' operational chiefs received the advisory. The DGCA instructed airlines to deploy restrictions whenever all conciliation efforts had failed.

The DGCA stated that the pilot of an aircraft is in charge of maintaining flight safety, crew member safety, and the safety of passengers and goods carried by aircraft. Notably, many provisions of the 1937 Aircraft Rules, DGCA rules, circulars, and airline manuals specify a person's responsibilities for dealing with unruly passengers.

The cabin crew must diffuse a critical situation, according to the DGCA's additional statement. DGCA recommends 'handcuff-like device' to control unruly passengers on board. A senior DGCA official said they recommend devices kept in aircraft cabin used to restrain unruly passengers of level 3 type i.e. abusive physically violent category. The device looks like a handcuff. Some airlines in India like Air Asia are keeping it in the aircraft cabin.

The statutory body further stated that restraining devices should only be used after all other conciliatory measures have failed. In the meanwhile, it is the Director-in-Flight Services' responsibility to notify the DGCA of such situations in the manner specified by Cabin Safety Circular 02/2010.

Upon landing of the aircraft, airline representative shall lodge FIR with the concerned security agency at aerodrome, to whom, the unruly passenger shall be handed over," the DGCA said.

What will land a passenger on the no-fly list?

In accordance with the DGCA, instances of unruly behaviour include intentionally interfering with a crew member's performance of their duties, smoking inside an aircraft, using threatening or abusive language toward a crew member or other passengers, consuming alcohol or drugs that may cause disruption, and more.

Level 1, 2, or 3 behaviours have been designated as disorderly and will determine the length of the suspension.

Physical gestures, verbal abuse, and disorderly inebriation are examples of Level 1 behaviour and up to three-month suspension may result from this.

Level 2 physical abuse, which includes "pushing, kicking, striking, grabbing or unwanted touching or sexual harassment," will result in a six-month suspension.

Level 3 behaviour include those that pose a risk to one's life, such as endangering the aircraft's operational systems and engaging in "physical violence, including choking, eye gouging, deadly attack, attempted or successful breach of the flight crew compartment, etc." In such a case, the prohibition may last for a minimum of two years or longer might be permanent.

According to PTI, the Ministry of Home Affairs can also give the DGCA and the airlines a list of those who have been deemed "national security concerns" so they can be put on the no-fly list.

So far, only one Mumbai jeweller has been added to the no-fly list thus far, according to a report in The New Indian Express from 2020.

On a Jet Airways aircraft from Mumbai to Delhi in 2017, multimillionaire Birju Kishore Salla falsely claimed there were hijackers and explosives in the cargo hold. Salla placed the letter in the lavatory. As a result, the aircraft had to make an emergency landing at Ahmedabad Airport.

He was also prosecuted under the new Anti-Hijacking Act of 2016, making him the first individual to be placed on the no-fly list.

We are cooperating with law enforcement and ask that any additional inquiries be directed to them," Wells Fargo said in a statement. In a bitterly cold bedroom at the start of winter in Kabul, 22-year Maryam sat with her baby son bundled up in a red jumper as he coughed days after being discharged for the third time from a hospital ward for suspected pneumonia. Every time 10 months old Rahmat's parents bring him home from the crowded, but the warmer hospital, they say he gets sick again. The parents say they spend whatever they can from their shrinking income for heating the room as the temperature drops below freezing at night.

"I am scared, it is only the beginning of winter, what is going to happen," asked Maryam, saying the family could only buy coal in small quantities and had to cut back on food to afford even that after her husband lost his construction job.

The family is among many in Afghanistan unable to afford adequate heating, often having to choose between food and fuel as an economic crisis grips the country.

Doctors and aid workers say thousands of children are being admitted to hospital with pneumonia and other respiratory diseases caused by the cold and malnutrition.

The crisis, aid agencies say, is likely to get worse. A ban on female NGO workers has led to over 180 international organisations suspending operations in the crucial winter months, saying they are unable to operate in the conservative country without female staff to reach out to women and children.

Even before that, more than half the population was reliant on humanitarian aid after the economic shock precipitated by the 2021 Taliban takeover caused Afghanistan's GDP to shrink by 20 per cent last year.

Afghanistan has been hit by a cut in development spending by foreign governments, an enforcement of Western sanctions and the freezing of the country's central bank assets that has severely hampered the banking system.

"Our patients have increased compared to the past, the main reason is the economy," said Mohammad Arif Hassanzai, head of internal medicine at Indira Gandhi Children's Hospital in Kabul.

Hospital figures showed more than 6,700 children were admitted in November for pneumonia, cough, asthma and other respiratory conditions, compared to around 3,700 the same month the previous year.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), which supports several hospitals in Afghanistan, said even before the winter months, it had seen a 50 per cent increase of children under five admitted for pneumonia in 2022 compared to the previous year.

"People have been dying of pneumonia this year, including children," said Lucien Christen, ICRC's spokesperson in Kabul, adding that malnutrition was contributing to children's weakened immune systems.

Aid workers said pollution also worsened this year as more people burned garbage and plastic for heat.

In a ward dedicated to pneumonia patients at the hospital, two or three babies lay on a bed, with worried parents and a handful of stretched medical staff overseeing them. Some mothers held tiny oxygen masks to infants' faces, while fathers crammed the corridors outside.

Suddenly a clamour broke out. A one-month-old baby, Mohammad, stopped breathing and his lips were turning blue. His panic-stricken uncle, holding the child in a green blanket, was directed to a specialised emergency unit two floors below. He dashed downstairs, as the baby's mother ran behind in tears.

In the high-dependency unit, Mohammad was put on oxygen support. The doctor said he was in critical condition and would take five days to stabilise.

His mother remained at the baby's bedside. Her husband had lost his job and they could not afford heating, she said. Watching her son stop breathing, she said, "It felt like my own heart had stopped."

A couple of weeks after forming the most right-wing government in the history of Israel, the Benjamin Netanyahu government has focused its attention on revamp of the 'judiciary'.

A couple of weeks after forming the most right-wing government in the history of Israel, the Benjamin Netanyahu government has focused its attention on revamp of the 'judiciary'. Justice Minister Yair Levin on Wednesday presented the 'judicial overhaul package' aimed at neutering the judicial system of the country, according to the detractors. “I’ve warned against the damage caused by judicialisation. Now, the time has come to act," said Levin while presenting the overhaul package. Under the revamp programme, the country's parliament, also called Knesset will be given powers to override Supreme Court decisions with a simple majority of 61 votes. WATCH | Israel's Benjamin Netanyahu unveils his right-wing government's policy priorities × Calling the legislation 'balanced', Levin enlisted another rule that will forbid the court from using a test of reasonableness to judge the decisions taken by the government. Moreover, the panel that chooses the judges will be reformed and politicians will have an enhanced say in the selection. Currently, a nine-member panel chooses the judges which has three members of the government. However, if Levin's overhaul gets the nod, two representatives chosen by him i.e the justice minister will also sit on the panel. Effectively the government will have the majority of five against four in the committee. Lastly, the ministers will be able to appoint their own legal advisers under the new plan. Before signing off, Levin added that the package will be debated in the 120-seat Knesset. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the overhaul of the judiciary saying the new legislation will create a balance between the courts, government and the parliament. “We will revise the way we govern. We’ll take steps that strengthen personal security throughout the state. We’ll start by enacting reforms that will ensure the proper balance between the three branches of government.” Read more: Benjamin Netanyahu forms most right-wing coalition govt in Israel's history The critics of the plan argue that by passing the said legislation, the Netanyahu government will be undermining democracy in the country. The believe that power will reside in the hands of the most unilateral coalition in the history of the country without any checks and balances in place.
