On Wednesday, North Korea's official newspaper said that relying on external aid to cope with food shortages equals taking "poisoned candy". Amid deepening hardships stemming from international sanctions and supply shortages thanks to coronavirus restrictions, ruling Workers' Party paper Rodong Sinmun urged for a model of self-reliance. In recent years, Pyongyang has suffered from a food shortage. Natural disasters like typhoons and floods, along with international sanctions imposed on the nation due to its nuclear and missile programmes, and a sharp decrease in North Korea's trade with China amid the coronavirus lockdown and the following pandemic restrictions have all added to the nation's troubles.

He said, "we have seen President Biden in Ukraine, and we have seen Putin's speech, so this will be a very important item on the agenda."

The ambassador also added that while this is an important issue, the talks will not be restricted to it alone and that other topics such as China and the Indo-Pacific region will also be discussed.

Eric R. Holder, Jr., the man convicted of killing renowned rapper Nipsey Hussle was sentenced to 60 years to life in prison on Wednesday.

After a month-old trial, the 32-year-old was also found guilty of voluntary manslaughter. He was ineligible for the death penalty but was expected to receive a life sentence.

During the hearing, prosecutors alleged that the attack was premeditated, however, Holder's attorney Aaron Jansen, argued it was a heat-of-the-moment decision.

On the other hand, Jansen said he was 'deeply disappointed' with the verdict and planned to appeal. He added that we did manage to secure a minor victory for Holder by receiving an 'attempted voluntary manslaughter conviction' as opposed to an attempted murder verdict.

South Korean Foreign Minister Park Jin in an exclusive interview with CNN on Wednesday said that North Korea is a 'clear and present danger.' This comes as Pyongyang tested intercontinental ballistic missiles and nuclear-capable long-range multiple rocket launchers last week.

"What North Korea is doing is completely wrong. They have been escalating nuclear and missile threats, and threatening the peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia," Park said. He added, North Korean President Kim Jong Un's frequent missile tests and repeated threats of using nuclear weapons were a display of aggression and the only way to tackle it is through extended US deterrence.

However, Park said that such an act will only strengthen South Korea's alliance with the US, as "extended deterrence is the only way that we can effictively protect out country from North Korean aggression."

Therefore, the lesson South Korea learned from this is when we are strong, "North Korea comes to the dialogue table. When we are weak, they try to take advantage of that vulnerability. So we have to prepare ourselves through our defense and also through deterrence to talk with the North."

'Clear & present danger': S. Korean foreign minister says about N. Korea, US deterrence is the only hope

An Australian regulator that has already put pressure on other global tech firms has now sent legal letters to Twitter and Google asking them to hand over information about their efforts to stop 'online child abuse.'

The move by the country's e-safety commissioner keeps a spotlight on the anti-exploitation practices at 'Twitter' under the new ownership of Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who called 'child protection,' his top priority.

Referring to Musk's tweets, e-safety commissioner Julie Inman Grant told Reuters, "with Elon Musk declaring child sexual abuse a top priority, this is an opportunity for him to explain what he is indeed doing."

Also read |Meta's fortune expected to soar by $1.7 billion with paid verification service

She added that this move is in Twitter's interest to show that it is effectively working to eradicate child sexual abuse material, which could possibly turn the advertisers away.

Grant, who earlier had served as the public policy director for the microblogging site until 2016, said the responses from larger tech firms, coupled with reports of loose content moderation at Twitter since Musk took over, prompted her to take this action.

Apart from writing to Twitter, the commissioner also sent these letters to Alphabet Inc's Google, to the owner of YouTube and China's TikTok.

Responding to the letter, Google's senior manager of government affairs and public policy Samantha Yorke said, "we utilise a range of industry standard scanning techniques including hash-matching technology and artificial intelligence to identify and remove (child abuse material) that has been uploaded to our services."

On the other hand, TikTok's policy manager for Australia Jed Horner in a statement said that the company had a 'zero-tolerance approach to the dissemination of abuse material,' with over 40,000 safety professionals across the world who develop and enforce policies, build processes and technologies that could detect, remove or restrict violative content at scale.

As per new laws in Australia, the e-safety commissioner can compel tech companies to give detailed information about the exploitation on their platforms and about measures they take to prevent it.

According to estimates, companies that fail to cooperate will face fines of up to $478,000 per day.

Last year, the e-commissioner sent similar letters to Apple Inc, Microsoft Corp and Facebook owner Meta Platforms. However, after receiving their responses, the commissioner called their practices 'inadequate.'

Referring to Musk's tweets, e-safety commissioner Julie Inman Grant told Reuters, "with Elon Musk declaring child sexual abuse a top priority, this is an opportunity for him to explain what he is indeed doing." Also read |Meta's fortune expected to soar by $1.7 billion with paid verification service She added that this move is in Twitter's interest to show that it is effectively working to eradicate child sexual abuse material, which could possibly turn the advertisers away. Responding to the letter, Google's senior manager of government affairs and public policy Samantha Yorke said, "we utilise a range of industry standard scanning techniques including hash-matching technology and artificial intelligence to identify and remove (child abuse material) that has been uploaded to our services." Watch | 7 People fired by Google come together to form new company On the other hand, TikTok's policy manager for Australia Jed Horner in a statement said that the company had a 'zero-tolerance approach to the dissemination of abuse material,' with over 40,000 safety professionals across the world who develop and enforce policies, build processes and technologies that could detect, remove or restrict violative content at scale. However, after receiving their responses, the commissioner called their practices 'inadequate.' (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE

The James Webb Space Telescope, launched in 2021, has detected evidence of six massive ancient galaxies, which astronomers are calling 'universe breakers,' which can possibly change the existing theories of cosmology.

These objects possibly date to a time when the universe was just three per cent of its current age and are far larger than what was presumed possible for galaxies so early after the big bang, Guardian reported.

If confirmed, these findings would call into question scientists' understanding of how the galaxies were formed.

Google confirmed on Wednesday (February 22) that the search giant was rolling out tests that would impede attempts of some Canadian users to access news content. Reuters reported that Google said that these tests were a potential response to Canada's online news bill. The "Online News Act" bill was introduced by Justin Trudeau's Liberal government in April. The bill lays out rules to force platforms like Google, Facebook and others to negotiate deals with news publishers for their content.

"We're briefly testing potential product responses to Bill C-18 that impact a very small percentage of Canadian users. We run thousands of tests each year to assess any potential changes to Search," said Google as quoted by Reuters.

The company said that these tests are time-limited and will impact a random sampling of less than 4 per cent of users in Canada. It will "limit the visibility of Canadian and international news to varying degrees."

A spokeswoman for Canadian Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez said Canadians will not be intimidated and called it disappointing that Google is borrowing from Meta's playbook.

"Canadians need to have access to quality, fact-based news at the local and national levels, and that’s why we introduced the Online News Act. Tech giants need to be more transparent and accountable to Canadians," the spokeswoman said.

Last year, Facebook had warned of blocking of some news content in Canada in response to concerns about legislation that would compel platforms to pay news publishers.

According to a report, a similar law in Australia, which led to brief shutdown of Facebook news feeds, has largely worked.

Animal lovers in the southern Turkish city of Diyarbakir are protesting the demolition of a building. The building, as per an AFP report, is believed to contain several animals and the protestors are pushing for the removal of the stuck animals before the building is demolished for reconstruction. The series of quakes in Turkey and Syria has claimed more than 45,000 lives and has battered huge amounts of infrastructure, many of which are now being cleared to make way for reconstruction. Talking to AFP, Nilay Yilmaz, one of the protestors said "We only had one request: we said 'let us at least go in'... They didn't let us do that either."

The protestors have reportedly been told that the "building would collapse if a crane touched it." However, Yilmaz says that "since 8:00 am they've been cutting at it with that machinery, but the building is still standing."

Demography in China is undergoing a major shift, with the number of births declining and the population ageing rapidly. The latest data from the nation's Henan province shows the extent of the challenge faced by Beijing. For the first time since 1961, the province has recorded more deaths than it had births. As per the latest figures, Henan recorded 8,000 more deaths than births; this as per the South China Morning Post is the province's first population decline in around six decades. In 2022, the province also saw an overall population decline of around 110,000 people.

The population decline is mainly because of a massive outflow of workers and is less compared to 2021's overall population decline of 580,000.

As per Henan's Bureau of Statistics, various factors have contributed to the province's population decline.

In a statement on Monday, the bureau said it was "affected by various factors such as the continuous decrease of women of childbearing age, changes in beliefs, delayed marriage and childbirth, population outflow and population ageing."

United States President Joe Biden on Tuesday (Feb 21) began his remarks in Poland by declaring that "Kyiv stands proud, Kyiv stands strong, it stands tall most importantly it stands free," nearly one year after Russia's invasion. His address at the Royal Castle in Warsaw comes a day after his first visit to Ukraine.

"A dictator bent on rebuilding an empire will never be able to ease the people's love of liberty, brutality will never grind down the will of the free. Ukraine will never be a victory for Russia -- never," said the US president, seemingly referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin. He also asserted that freedom is at stake in the war.

Biden, reiterating his strong support for Ukraine, said that "there should be no doubt: our support for Ukraine will not waver, NATO will not be divided and we will not tire." He added that when Russia invaded it was just not Kyiv being tested, but the whole world.

During his speech, the US president said, Putin thought that NATO would fracture and divide but it is more united than ever before. "He thought he could weaponise energy, crack Europe's resolve, and instead we are working to end Europe's dependence from Russia's fossil fuels."

He added, they used rape as a weapon of war and bombed train stations, maternity hospitals, schools and orphanages.

"No one, no one can turn away their eyes from the atrocities that Russia is committing. It is abhorrent. It is abhorrent. But extraordinarily, as well, has been the response of the Ukrainian people and the world," said the US president.
