&nbsp;A 13-year-old boy was fatally shot by a police officer in upstate New York, United States after the teen was armed with what the officials said appeared to be a gun.&nbsp;

The video of the incident released on Saturday (Jun 29) shows the boy being tackled to the ground after he ran from officers and pointed what the police later determined was a replica handgun at them.

<h2>What we know about the incident</h2>

The police said that the teen was killed sometime after 10:00 pm (local time) on Friday (Jun 28) in the New York city of Utica when three officers stopped two young people in connection with an armed robbery investigation.&nbsp;

While the officers were questioning the teens, one of them fled on foot, said the Utica police in a news release. The police said that the youth, both 13, matched the descriptions of the robbery suspects and were spotted in the same area&nbsp;around the same time the next day.&nbsp;

The victim had fled after the police, as per the footage, said that they needed to pat them down to make sure they didn’t have any weapons in their possession.

Subsequently, the teen later identified as Nyah Mway, 13, ran and the police spotted what “appeared to be a handgun,” the Utica Police Chief Mark Williams said in a press conference on &nbsp;Saturday morning.&nbsp;

“A Utica police officer ultimately discharged his firearm once, striking the male, during a ground struggle,” he added. He was frequently interrupted by the outraged community members.

According to Williams, Mway was given immediate first aid and taken to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.&nbsp;

It wasn’t until after the shooting that the officers recovered a pellet gun resembling a Glock 17 handgun, said the Utica police chief.&nbsp;

The police officer who allegedly shot and killed Mway was identified as Patrick Husnay.&nbsp;

The New York attorney general’s office said that they have opened an investigation into the shooting. Utica police said it is conducting its own investigation.&nbsp;

All three officers involved in the incident have been placed on paid administrative leave.

<h2>Incident sparks outrage</h2>

Hundreds of people attended a community vigil for the teen, reported ABC News. Lay Htoo, Mway’s uncle, told the media outlet that he and his family were depressed and saddened.

Htoo said his family was from Myanmar and his nephew had moved to Utica eight years ago. Mway had recently graduated from middle school and was a “very good kid,” said Htoo.&nbsp;

The police department released the body cam footage after a public outcry over the shooting. Utica, a city with a population of 65,000, is also home to more than 4,200 people from Myanmar, reported the Associated Press.&nbsp;

Mway, as per media reports, was a refugee born in Myanmar and a member of the Karen ethnic minority.

Karamjit had reportedly faced ridicule after his grocery store in Indiana failed, while Vipanpal's deli in Valley Stream, New York, thrived.&nbsp;

Their father, a prominent deli owner, had given both sons money to start their businesses after COVID-19, police said, as reported by Pix 11 news.

"Due to Covid, the grocery store fails miserably. He goes bankrupt and is forced to move back home."

"A lot of tension between him and the brother over snide comments about how he’s a failure and his father giving him a hard time about the store not being successful," explained NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny during a press briefing on Tuesday (June 11).

<h2>Manifesto</h2>

The shooter, Karamjit, as per reports, has left behind a manifesto in which he recounts the abuse he endured.&nbsp;

The manifesto, sent as a long text message to his wife, detailed the abuse but did not mention suicide, police noted.

In it, Karamjit Multani detailed how his father demanded that he, his wife, and three children leave the family home.&nbsp;

On the day of the shooting, the shooter&nbsp;had sent his wife and three children — ages 1, 2, and 4 — back to Indiana, the woman's home state. After a family dinner, Karamjit went to his brother's room armed with two pistols and shot him multiple times, ultimately killing him, said the NYPD Chief of Detectives.

As the shooting unfolded, their mother threw herself on top of Vipanpal, sustaining two gunshot wounds. She survived her injuries, police confirmed.

After the attack, Karamjit was captured on video, leaving the family home, removing his turban, and then fatally shooting himself in the head.&nbsp;

"As he's running, he drops the gun, picks it up, has an accidental discharge, runs a few more steps, stops, and just shoots himself in the head," said Joseph Kenny.

The police clashed with the protesters when they took out a rally in front of the Nova Music Festival Exhibition on Wall Street in a “citywide day of rage for Gaza”.

In the footage of the demonstration, the protesters were seen chanting “Long Live the Intifada” and “Israel go to hell". A red flare was also lit by the protesters before they received a warning to put it out from an NYPD official.

In the early hours of&nbsp;October 7, Hamas gunmen breached the border&nbsp;between Gaza and Israel and moved towards the Nova music festival which had continued through the night.&nbsp;

The music festival was being held in the Negev desert in southern Israel and there were thousands of Israelis and foreign nationals. The festival marked the Jewish holiday Sukkot and was touted as an event which celebrated “unity and love".

Pakistan seamer Naseem Shah was in tears after his side failed to win the match against India in the 2024 T20 World Cup in New York. Pakistan were placed comfortably in the 120-run chase till the 11th over before Team India made an incredible comeback and snatched the game from the jaws of defeat. The loss was too much to take for Naseem, as he cried on his way to the dressing room after the match.

Following Arshdeep Singh’s final delivery that went for just one run, separate sets of emotions were on display from both camps. Meanwhile, Naseem was one of the two Pakistani bowlers who picked three wickets against India, with Haris Rauf being the other. After asking India to bat first, Naseem broke the opening stand, removing Virat Kohli caught at point on four. The new-ball bowler kept it tight throughout the India innings, removing Axar Patel and Shivam Dube later.&nbsp;

Even during the chase, Naseem showed intent by going for boundaries despite the target looking out of his reach.&nbsp;

<h2>India on top in New York</h2>

The Men in Blue were victorious against Pakistan in this tournament for the seventh time in history, with the latest win coming at the Nassau County Cricket Stadium by six runs. India fared poorly with the bat, getting all out for a mere 119.&nbsp;

While Rishabh Pant was India’s best batter on the day, scoring a hard-fought 42, only two others (Axar Patel – 20 and Rohit Sharma – 13) could reach the double-digit mark. 
Pakistan lost Captain Babar Azam early, but Mohammad Rizwan and Usman Khan stood tall till the 11th over, keeping their side’s hopes alive in this run chase. That, however, was the last time&nbsp;they had their noses ahead.&nbsp;

India won the middle-over battle, picking three wickets for 25 runs in the next four overs. Even though Pakistan had a chance to up the ante, they failed, as Bumrah picked two wickets, including the big one of Iftikhar Ahmed caught in the deep in the penultimate over.&nbsp;

With 18 runs needed off the last six balls, Arshdeep defended the total as India won by six runs to sit on the top of the points table in Group A.&nbsp;

The law permits the state attorney general to fine a person up to $5,000 for each infraction.

Governor Kathy Hochul described the legislation as a "historic step forward in our efforts to address the youth mental health crisis and create a safer digital environment for young people."

He further said, "New York is leading the nation to protect our kids from addictive social media feeds and shield their personal data from predatory companies."

The teachers union also welcomed the decision. These feeds “make predictions about interests, mood, and other factors related to what is most likely to keep users engaged for as long as possible, creating a feed tailor-made to keep each user on the platform for longer periods”, the law states.&nbsp;

“Since their adoption, addictive feeds have had a dramatic negative effect on children and teenagers, causing young users to spend more time on social media than they otherwise would, which has been tied to significantly higher rates of youth depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, and self-harm.”

Similar laws shielding kids from social media use have been drafted throughout the United States based on the common perception that social media use is raising the incidence of mental illness in kids.

Parental consent laws are being created or updated in Connecticut, Vermont, Illinois, New Mexico, Maryland, and Minnesota. Some of these laws require online platforms to carry out safety assessments for children, modify their designs to help children avoid harmful content, and restrict who can contact minors.

Alleging that Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, breached children's privacy, 33 states filed a lawsuit against it last year.

Once the safe was pulled out of the water, according to the couple, they managed to open it and found approximately $100,000 in bundles of $100 bills. However, the money was damaged due to water.&nbsp;

“It was two stacks of freaking hundreds. Big stacks,” Kane told NY1. He also told the media outlet that this wasn’t the first safe&nbsp;they had found. “We have found plenty of safes before,” he said.&nbsp;

Kane added, “And then I saw the numbers and thought: ‘This is not possible.’” Unfortunately, the notes were “soaking wet, pretty much destroyed,” he said.&nbsp;

The couple&nbsp;called the New York Police Department (NYPD) to avoid any legal trouble over their discovery. The call&nbsp;led a number of officers to show up just to check out the bizarre call that had come over the radio.&nbsp;

The NYPD personnel said they had never seen anything like it. Agostini said that since there were no IDs or a way to find the owner of the safe, the police “were like ‘well, congratulations!’”

“I guess the finders keepers rule worked for us,” Kane said.&nbsp;

Additionally,&nbsp;16 people were released with orders to appear in court and around&nbsp;seven others were issued summonses and released, said an NYPD spokesperson in an email to Reuters.&nbsp;

Guards at the museum were also seen trying to secure its doors against the surging crowd while protesters found other ways to enter the museum.&nbsp;

A report by Reuters citing a video on social media said campus security was seen taking down the tents but as of Friday night, police were not involved.&nbsp;

“We are aware of the encampment erected this evening and are monitoring the situation. We remain committed to hosting a successful weekend for our alumni,” said Columbia spokesperson Samantha Slater.&nbsp;

As well as making sure that the stadium and the surrounding Eisenhower Park are safe, the parking areas are safe, the watch areas are safe, we also are adding 100 additional police officers to our normal staffing for the rest of the county, just as a precaution."

One particular tip-off was regarding a likely lone wolf attack on the June 9 game, as per the report which attributed it to the police commissioner. "When you've got a game and a crowd as big as this, everything is credible. We will go through every fine detail when it comes to the security and safety of the residents here in Nassau County. I can guarantee you this is the largest security we've ever had to do in this county's history, and I can also guarantee you the safest place to be in Nassau County on June 9 will be inside that stadium," Ryder mentioned.
