Tatenda Chinz is from Zimbabwe and is the president of the association of African students in India. He says there is real need of direct communication among the Indians and Africans so that the Indians could understand that Africans are like Indians in any of the daily habits. There are differences of culture. What a Nigerian girl is comfortable wearing in the scorching heat, may make Indians uncomfortable.

Apart from this, the government has also called upon Pakistan to expedite the grant of visas to the members of the medical experts` team which is proposed to visit Pakistan to assess the mental condition of believed-to-be Indian prisoners of unsound mind lodged in different jails of Pakistan.&nbsp;

It also called for an early visit of the Joint Judicial Committee to Pakistan and early visit of the four-member team to Karachi in connection with release and repatriation of 22 Indian fishing boats.

Immediate consular access has also been sought for the remaining prisoners and fishermen with the request to facilitate their earliest release and repatriation.&nbsp;

"The government should enhance rules and regulations for ensuring the safety of doctors," said another protesting junior doctor.

However, at the receiving end were the patients that had reached the hospital owing to different medical ailments but they were not attended by doctors due to the strike.&nbsp;

This comes weeks after a nationwide doctor`s strike triggered by another attack on a junior doctor at NRS hospital came to an end on June 18.

Each year the 193-member General Assembly elects five non-permanent members for a two-year term at the UN high-table. The five permanent members of the Council are China, France, Russia, UK and the US.

Previously, India has been elected as a non-permanent member of the Council for the years 1950-1951, 1967-1968, 1972-1973, 1977-1978, 1984-1985, 1991-1992 and most recently in 2011-2012 under the leadership of former Ambassador Hardeep Singh Puri.&nbsp;

Early this month, Estonia, Niger, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Tunisia and Vietnam were elected to the Council for a two-year term beginning January 2020. St. Vincent and the Grenadines is the smallest nation ever to secure a seat.&nbsp;

Big diplomatic win for India as all 55 Asia-Pacific nations endorse New Delhi's bid for non-permanent UNSC seat

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/us-secretary-of-state-mike-pompeo-arrives-in-india-on-three-day-visit-230422">US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo</a> on Wednesday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his residence in New Delhi. As per reports, PM Modi and Pompeo discussed various aspects of the bilateral relationship to strengthen the India-US strategic partnership.

"Working together to further deepen our strategic partnership. Secretary Pompeo called on PM Narendra Modi to exchange views on various aspects of Indo-US relationship. PM will meet President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the upcoming G20 Osaka Summit," Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Raveesh Kumar tweeted along with pictures of the meeting.

His meeting with PM Modi began at 10 am. After his meeting with the prime minister, Pompeo met External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar at around 12 pm. Both will have a working lunch, news agency PTI reported.&nbsp;

Later in the day, Pompeo will make an "India policy speech" in the evening.

Calling the visit an important one, S Jaishankar speaking in Gandhinagar said, "we have a very positive approach for the meeting." He told reporters that although it is not a structured visit, some of the areas that are likely to be tabled during the discussions would feature trade talks. Other areas of dialogue would include strategic ties, Iran-US issue, H1b visa, data localisation, terrorism and Indo-Pacific strategy among others.

On the S-400 deal, India has made it clear to the US that it has a long-standing defence relationship with Moscow which can't "be wished away" and that the deal has been in discussion with Russia for a decade.&nbsp;

The Trump Administration wants Prime Minister Narendra Modi to lower trade barriers and embrace fair and reciprocal trade, the United States said Tuesday hours after Secretary of State Mike Pompeo landed in New Delhi on a three-day visit, news agency PTI reported.&nbsp;

"There is enormous potential to grow our trade relationship and create the high-quality jobs that Prime Minister Modi wants if India lowers trade barriers and embraces fair and reciprocal trade," according to a State Department Fact Sheet.

"The Trump Administration is working to ensure that American companies operating in India have the same level playing field that Indian companies enjoy in the United States," it said.

The State Department said as India's number one overseas market, the US purchases close to one-fifth of its exports. India is also the fastest growing major market for US goods.

Pompeo's visit to India is aimed at deepening strategic relationship with the largest democratic country of the world, the US said Tuesday.

"Prime Minister Modi's sweeping mandate in the recent elections creates a unique opportunity to realize this vision," it said hours after Pompeo landed in New Delhi on a three-day visit.

Pompeo's visit comes days ahead of PM Modi's meeting with US President Trump in Osaka, Japan on the sidelines of 14th G20 summit and the second JAI trilateral - Japan, America and India.

The event was a welcome dinner during which Jaishankar spoke about Indian foreign policy and had informal chats with many envoys.

Outlining the focus for the next five years, the EAM highlighted how New Delhi is ready to share global responsibilities and be part of shaping global outcomes from climate change to maritime security.&nbsp;

He explained how India will be working on its global footprint, starting with the immediate neighbourhood under the neighbourhood first policy, towards the east with Act East and other parts of the world from Pacific to Africa to Europe.&nbsp;

He said New Delhi is keen on initiating partnerships across the world as part of India's transformation. Past few years have seen PM Modi inviting countries such as Japan, Germany, France, Israel to be part of India's flagship programmes such as 'Make In India', smart cities, etc

"It was a gesture highly valued by the DC that minister Jaishankar offered us this dinner. The minister was very close and warm, approaching to greet each table and talking with us", Coromoto Godoy Calderon, Venezuelan envoy to India told WION. Adding, "I was very impressed by his kindness".

The dinner which took place at a Delhi hotel also saw Pakistan in attendance. Pakistan's Deputy High Commissioner Syed Haider Shah was representing his country.&nbsp;

Remember, Pakistan's new envoy Moin-ul-Haq still hasn't taken charge. Former Pak High Commissioner Sohail Mahmood went on to become new Pak foreign secretary leaving the position vacant.&nbsp;

'India ready to shape global outcomes,' External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar tells envoys

Delhi chief minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) president Arvind Kejriwal met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Parliament on Friday and assured full cooperation of his government.

India's tallest rubbish mountain in New Delhi is on course to rise higher than the Taj Mahal in the next year, becoming a fetid symbol for what the UN considers the world's most polluted capital.

Hawks and other birds of prey hover around the towering Ghazipur landfill on the eastern fringe of New Delhi, stray cows, dogs and rats wander at will over the huge expanse of smoking filth.

Taking up the area of more than 40 football pitches, Ghazipur rises by nearly 10 metres a year with no end in sight to its foul-smelling growth.

According to East Delhi's superintendent engineer Arun Kumar, it is already more than 65 metres (213 feet) high.&nbsp;

At its current rate of growth, it will be taller than the iconic Taj in Agra, some 73 metres high, in 2020.

India's Supreme Court warned last year that red warning lights will soon have to be put on the dump to alert passing jets.

It was not meant to be that way.

Ghazipur was opened in 1984 and reached its capacity in 2002 when it should have been closed. But the city's detritus has kept on arriving each day in hundreds of trucks.

"About 2,000 tonnes of garbage is dumped at Ghazipur each day," a Delhi municipal official said on condition of anonymity.

In 2018, a section of the hill collapsed in heavy rains killing two people.&nbsp; 
Dumping was banned after the deaths, but the measure lasted only a few days because authorities could not find an alternative.

Garbage champions&nbsp;

Fires, sparked by methane gas coming from the dump, regularly break out and take days to extinguish.

Shambhavi Shukla, senior researcher at the Center for Science and Environment in New Delhi, said methane belching from the garbage can become even more deadly when mixed with atmosphere.

Leachate,&nbsp;a black toxic liquid, oozes from the dump into a local canal.

"It all needs to be stopped as the continuous&nbsp;dumping has severely polluted the air and ground water," said Chitra Mukherjee, head of Chintan, an environment advocacy group.

Residents say the dump often makes breathing virtually impossible.

"The poisonous smell has made our lives hell. People fall sick all the time," said 45-year-old local resident Puneet Sharma.

Protests do not work and now many people are leaving the district.

They say a plant that recycles waste into energy next to the dump increases their misery because the smoke it releases by burning trash is also poisonous.

Local doctor Kumud Gupta said she sees about 70 people, including babies, each day mostly suffering from respiratory and stomach ailments caused by polluted air.

A recent study said the dump was a health risk for people living within five kilometres (three miles), including for cancer.

Traffic clogged streets, heavy industry and annual burning of fields in regions around Delhi have already made the Indian capital notorious for its pollution.

A government survey conducted between 2013 and 2017 reported that Delhi saw 981 deaths from acute respiratory infection while more than 1.7 million residents suffered from infections.

And India's garbage mountains will only get bigger in coming years.&nbsp;

Indian cities are among the world's largest garbage producers, generating 62 million tonnes of waste annually. By 2030, that could rise to 165 million tonnes, according to government figures.

Leaders of BIMSTEC or Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation are set to attend the oath-taking ceremony of prime minister-designate &nbsp;Narendra Modi at Rashtrapati Bhawan on May 30 at 7pm.&nbsp;

The ministry of external affairs in a release said, "Government of India has invited the leaders of the BIMSTEC member states for the Swearing-in ceremony. This is in line with the government's focus on its 'Neighbourhood First' policy."

Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Nepal &amp; Bhutan are the BIMSTEC member states.

Modi had participated in the 4th BIMSTEC summit which took place in Kathmandu last year. India had also called all the BIMSTEC leaders for a retreat in Goa in 2016 when India hosted the BRICS summit.

India's focus has been BIMSTEC since the cancellation of the SAARC summit in 2016. India along with Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Maldives had boycotted the summit in Islamabad in the aftermath of Uri terror attack.&nbsp;

Heads of Bangladesh and&nbsp;Thailand won't be attending the ceremony due to prior engagement of Sheikh Hasina and government&nbsp;formation in Thailand.

Bangladesh will be represented by President Abdul Hamid.

India has also invited President of the Kyrgyz Republic Sooronbay Jeenbekov, who is the current Chair of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, and the Prime Minister of Mauritius Pravind Jugnauth, who was the Chief Guest at this year's Pravasi Bhartiya Divas.

BIMSTEC leaders to attend Modi's swearing-in ceremony in Delhi on May 30

In Islamabad, Pakistan's foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi announced the appointment of Moin ul Haque as its envoy to Delhi. He is currently Pakistan's envoy to France. Haque joined Pakistan's foreign service in 1987 and has worked as a diplomat in Brussels, New York, Sri Lanka, Canada, Turkey and France. He has also served as the Chief of Protocol in Pakistan foreign ministry.

He takes over from Sohail Mahmood who was Pakistan's envoy to India previously and is now the country's foreign secretary.&nbsp;

Imran Khan-led Pakistan has also nominated 18 new high commissioners, ambassadors and consul generals. The office of Delhi's Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) has also stepped up its drive to raise awareness on the use of various mobile apps, including 'cVigil', and on the significance of voter-verifiable paper audit trail (VVPATs). 
 
'cVigil', which stands for 'citizens' vigil', is a unique Internet-based mobile application through which a person can send to poll authorities, geo-tagged videos and photos of illegal money being distributed or a hate speech being made during polls. 
 
The app will work only during the time the model code of conduct is in place in a poll-bound state.&nbsp; 
 
The CEO office under its Systematic Voters Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) programme are also preparing to start a campaign in both print and audio-visual media to raise awareness on the photo voter slip. 
 
The Election Commission late February had said a photo voter slip shall no longer be used as a standalone identification document during elections, and a voter will have to carry any of the 12 approved identity cards to the polling station. 
 
The documents accepted for identification include - EPIC (Electoral Photo Identity Card), passport, Aadhaar card, driving licence, service identity cards with photographs issued to employees by central and state government, PSUs, public limited companies, passbooks issued by a bank or post office, PAN card and smart card issued by the Registrar General of India under the National Populations Register. 
 
'At present, we have intensified our campaign on raising awareness on the use of 'cVigil' so that more number of people can report violations of the moral code of conduct for the polls. A radio spot has already been made and is being used. Besides, we have just launched a print advertisement on its use, in national dailies also,'&nbsp;a senior official from the SVEEP programme said. 
 
'People can also report poll code violations through helpline -1950, or making a call to the district level or state-level control rooms. The purpose is to stop such violations as soon as possible," the official said. 
 
The CEO office in Delhi has already roped in cricketer Rishabh Pant and ace tennis player Manika Batra as brand ambassadors for raising awareness ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. 
'Both sportspersons will also be soon seen in the print and audio-visual advertisements to raise awareness among voters,'&nbsp;he said. 
 
On photo voter slip, Delhi CEO Ranbir Singh had earlier said the slip will also carry a disclaimer in bold letters that it won't be accepted for the purpose of identification. 
 
'But, we will carry out awareness campaigns from our own side to tell voters that it is no longer valid as a standalone proof for identification,'&nbsp;he said. 
 
However, the Election Commission had also said such slips will continue to be prepared and issued to electors as part of the awareness building exercise. 
 
The senior official of the SVEEP programme said, for the first time, publicity material has been used on auto-rickshaws under the Voter Verification and Information Programme (VVIP) segment. 
 
'We have used them on 3,000 auto-rickshaws across Delhi under VVIP'&nbsp;he said. 
 
The VVIP was launched last month by the Election Commission for citizens for verification of their names, new registrations, changes in the voter details and corrections in voter identity cards ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. 
 
Besides, cinema halls and radio spots are also part of the campaign to raise awareness on voting and use of VVPATs. 
 
A VVPAT is intended as an independent verification system for electronic voting machines designed to allow voters to verify that their vote was cast correctly, to detect possible fraud or malfunction, and to provide a means to audit the stored electronic results. 
 
A senior official of the Delhi CEO office had earlier said that for the 'first time', VVPATs will be used at all polling stations in Delhi, and in a Lok Sabha poll here. 
 
'We have 20,435 VVPATs for 13,816 polling stations. As per EVMs, we have 34,953 Ballot Units and 19,002 Control Units. VVPATs were used only in Delhi Cantonment in 2015 Assembly polls. They were not used in 2014 Lok Sabha elections,'&nbsp;the official had said.

'At present, we have intensified our campaign on raising awareness on the use of 'cVigil' so that more number of people can report violations of the moral code of conduct for the polls. A radio spot has already been made and is being used. Besides, we have just launched a print advertisement on its use, in national dailies also,' a senior official from the SVEEP programme said. 'People can also report poll code violations through helpline -1950, or making a call to the district level or state-level control rooms. The purpose is to stop such violations as soon as possible," the official said. The onset of a more pronounced winter is expected in the national capital, North India and Gangetic plains tomorrow due to north-western disturbances, a system which brings in cold winds from the upper reaches of the country. Due to north-westerly winds, minimum temperatures of Bihar and Jharkhand may also drop marginally in the coming days.

However, the drop in temperatures has not had any impact on the air quality as it remained in `very poor` with the air quality index docking at 329.&nbsp;Delhi air quality is very poor. The weather conditions will continue to remain unfavourable.&nbsp;

"At present, it continued to be in 'severe' but likely to improve further and will become 'very poor' by afternoon and will improve further by Saturday. The contribution of PM2.5 in PM10 which was 75 per cent on Thursday (against normal 55 per cent) has been reducing," the SAFAR said.

It also said the contribution to the PM2.5 pollution due to stubble emission was marginal.

Twenty-eight areas in Delhi recorded 'severe' air quality, while four areas recorded 'very poor' air quality, according to the data of the CPCB.

On Friday, the PM2.5 (particles in the air with a diameter of fewer than 2.5 micrometres) level was recorded at 272 gm-3.

The PM10 (particles in the air with a diameter of fewer than 10 micrometres) level was recorded six times the permissible limit at 422 gm-3, according to SAFAR.

An AQI between 0 and 50 is considered "good", 51 and 100 "satisfactory", 101 and 200 "moderate", 201 and 300 "poor", 301 and 400 "very poor", and 401 and 500 "severe".

AQI above 500 falls in the "severe-plus emergency" category.
