Netanyahu also held up a pager while lauding IDF’s actions in Lebanon against Hezbollah. This was a reference to Israel’s attack on September 17, 2024, when it remotely detonated hundreds of pagers that had been distributed to Hezbollah fighters. At least 12 people were killed in this attack, whereas over 3,000 others were injured. The Turkish President Recep Erdogan was also at the receiving end of Netanyahu’s ire. Calling him a tyrant, he accused Turkiye of becoming a super spreader of anti-Semitic lies and harbouring Hamas leaders. Ankara hit back, calling these allegations baseless and malicious.Netanyahu raked up the colonial past of UK and France to slam their recent move to ban import of all goods produced in West Bank’s Israeli settlements.Meanwhile, about hundred protesters, including US actress Susan Sarandon, were detained by the New York police for staging a sit-in to demand an end to US arms supplies to Israel. This comes in the wake of the Trump administration reportedly recently approving the sale of 40,000 highly destructive 2,000-pound bombs and other munition to Israel, worth 2.8 billion dollars. But you see, all is not well between Trump and Netanyahu. Far from it.In fact, things have reached a point where Netanyahu could not get a meeting with US President Donald Trump, unlike last year, in another setback for the Israeli prime minister.Reports attributed this to Trump’s extreme frustration with Netanyahu, who had promised a quick and easy war against Iran.In fact, very significantly, Netanyahu’s growing isolation was also referred to by Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.Speaking at a conference a few days earlier, Kushner claimed that US had used global pressure on Israel following its strike on Qatar last year, to push a reluctant Netanyahu to accept the Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal.Remember, in the New Delhi declaration, BRICS supported the creation of an independent state of Palestine, comprising the Gaza Strip and West Bank, with East Jerusalem as its capital. It also expressed deep concern over continued violence in Gaza despite the ceasefire and urged Israel to withdraw its troops from Lebanon. Also, what do the Israelis feel about Netanyahu’s UNGA address? It’s a mixed bag. While some praised his defence of Israel’s policies, others contended that his speech was meant for the domestic audience ahead of polls. As Netanyahu continues to face flak, this is bad news for the leader, coming right ahead of the election, as he seeks a record seventh term as PM.

Hundreds of demonstrators took to the streets, waving Palestinian flags and carrying banners. Protesters called out Israel’s war in Gaza and questioned why Netanyahu had been allowed to address the UN.

Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon approached an Iranian diplomat at the UN General Assembly on Thursday (Sep 24) and attempted to hand him a Starlink satellite internet terminal used moments earlier by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his speech. The exchange, captured on video and later posted by Danon on social media, showed the Iranian representative declining to engage and turning away as the Israeli envoy spoke to him.
Netanyahu slams Iran using Starlink device
During his fiery speech at the UNGA, Netanyahu assailed enemies and allies alike, sparking uproar in the chamber. Taking aim at Iran, the Israeli PM brandished a Starlink and commented that the device could help Iranians access information and communicate freely despite restrictions imposed by authorities.“This is a communications device that enables people to access the truth. That is what the Iranian regime fears. It spends billions to censor the internet.” He then told the assembly that he would leave it with the UN president so it could be passed to the Iranian delegation. “So when they inevitably defect, they too will be able to freely tell their story on social media,” Netanyahu said.

Netanyahu claimed that Iran’s leadership was particularly concerned about its population gaining access to the internet, portraying Starlink as a tool for freedom of thought and expression.Dozens of delegates walked out as the Israeli prime minister began speaking. Netanyahu responded by calling those who left “moral cowards” and used much of his address to defend Israel’s military actions and attack critics of the country. He also rejected accusations of genocide against Israel, saying: “Israel didn’t commit genocide. Israel prevented genocide.” His remarks came amid continued international criticism of Israel’s conduct in the Gaza conflict.
‘Take it and deliver it back to Tehran’
In a video that is now going viral, Danon can be heard offering the Starlink device to Iranian diplomat Nasser Asadi. “If you heard the Prime Minister, you would understand how useful it could be in helping the Iranian people gain their freedom after what you did to them,” Danon said.“Do you want to take it and deliver it back to Tehran? It could be very useful for people in Iran,” he added.Danon then said: “We love the Iranian people, and we pray for regime change in Iran. The day will come.”Asadi did not respond to the remarks and appeared to turn away from Danon. Danon later posted the footage online with the caption: “The Iranian representative didn’t want the starlink.”
Iran’s months-long internet blackout
The exchange referred to a major internet shutdown in Iran earlier this year. Global internet access in the country was disrupted for nearly three months during a crackdown that followed protests in January. Access began to return in late May after an 88-day blackout, according to reporting at the time.Iran has also restricted Starlink, which uses satellites to provide internet connectivity without relying on conventional terrestrial networks. Reports however suggest that Starlink equipment has nevertheless been brought into the country despite those restrictions.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected the Palestinian statehood at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Friday (Sep 26). In his speech, Netanyahu said that recognising a Palestinian state would be tantamount to “national suicide” for his country. In his speech, Netanyahu defended the military actions of Israel in Gaza as he vowed to continue the campaign to “finish the job” against Hamas and would do it “as quickly as possible”.Before the Israeli leader began his speech, the majority of the delegations left the hall. Those who exited the session included representatives from Arab, Muslim, and African countries. Several members of the European nations also left the hall as Netanyahu began his speech.“Israel will not allow you to shove a terrorist state down our throats. We will not commit national suicide because you don’t have the guts to face down the hostile media and antisemitic mobs demanding Israel’s blood,” he said.Netanyahu’s speech came days after Britain, Canada, Australia, France and other Western powers officially recognised a state of Palestine. He said that they had sent “a very clear message that murdering Jews pays off.”Netanyahu also praised Trump in his speech. The two leaders are set to meet in Washington on Monday (Sep 29). Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House that he may have finalised a deal to end the war in Gaza. “I think we have a deal,” Trump said. “It’s looking like we have a deal on Gaza. I think it’s a deal that will get the hostages back, it’s going to be a deal that will end the war.”
Netanyahu calls Palestinian Authority ‘corrupt to the core’
Mocking the Western support for Palestinian Authority president Mahmud Abbas, Netanyahu said that the authority is “corrupt to the core.” As he gave the speech, thousands of protesters marched nearby in the iconic Times Square, demanding his arrest. Netanyahu is facing an International Criminal Court arrest warrant over war crime allegations. In his address, Netanyahu also challenged the allegations of “genocide” in Gaza, saying that Israel has repeatedly warned the civilian population to leave by sending leaflets. However, as per humanitarian law, forced displacement is also considered a war crime.
‘We have not forgotten you’
Netanyahu noted that his speech was being broadcast on a loudspeaker in hopes of reaching Israeli hostages and Hamas leaders in Gaza.“We have not forgotten you – not even for a second. His aircraft took an unusual route to avoid flying over French and Spanish airspace. Although, according to FlightRadar24, the flight briefly overflew Greece and Italy. It was an attempt to avoid being arrested, as both countries have issued an arrest warrant for him for his alleged war crimes. The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has not publicly said why it took the unusual route, and CNN has approached it for comment. It came two weeks after the Israeli PM's office said that some journalists and members of Netanyahu’s entourage would not accompany him for “technical arrangements related to seating and security.” Meanwhile, the Jerusalem Post reported that the avoidance of French and Spanish airspace was a way of compensating for the additional fuel required. An i24 News report alleged, however, that officials decided to keep the number of people aboard the flight to a minimum, thus excluding journalists, to save fuel for what was expected to be a longer flight.
