NASA's Curiosity Mars Rover has made the most surprising revelation that methane is seeping from the surface of Gale Crater.

Since scientists did not find any signs of current or ancient life on Mars, they did not expect the gas to be present there, as living creatures produce most methane.

While SAM (Sample Analysis Mars) or the portable laboratory on Curiosity has detected traces of the gas near the surface of the Gale Crater, the European Space Agency's ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter found no methane in the atmosphere of the Red Planet.

Furthermore, Gale Crater is the only place on Mars where traces of methane have been found, likely due to geological mechanisms involving water and rocks deep underground. Methane also exhibits unexpected behaviour in Gale Crater by appearing at night and disappearing during the day, fluctuating seasonally, and sometimes spiking 40 times higher than usual.

In March, a NASA research group proposed a paper in the journal Geophysical Research: Planets, explaining why the gas behaves unexpectedly and is present in the Gale Crater.

The "soil" on Mars comprises broken rock and dust. The study suggests that the solidified salt formed in the Martian regolith could seal methane underneath despite its origin. The methane could seep out as the temperature rises during warmer seasons or times of day, weakening the seal.

Alexander Pavlov, a planetary scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, led the research, which suggests that the gas could also erupt in whiffs when the seals crack under the pressure of a small SUV-sized rover.

The origin of this hypothesis goes back to an experiment Pavlov conducted in 2017, which involved growing microorganisms in a simulated Martian permafrost infused with salt. While the microbe-growing results proved inconclusive, the researchers noticed that the top layer of the soil formed a salt crust as salty ice sublimated, turning from a solid to a gas and leaving the salt behind.

The research team tested five samples of permafrost infused with varying concentrations of the salt perchlorate, widely present on Mars. They exposed each sample to different temperatures and air pressure inside a Mars simulation chamber. Periodically, they injected neon, a methane analogue, underneath the soil sample and measured the gas pressure below and above the surface. They found higher pressure under the sample, indicating the gas was trapped.

Within three to 13 days, a seal formed under the Mars-like conditions only in samples with five to ten per cent perchlorate concentration. However, Curiosity has measured much higher concentration in Gale Crater.

Voyager 1, Earth's most distant spaceship, is sending back data for the first time since November last year. Watch to know more.

NASA's Voyager 1 sending useable data to Earth again

For the first time since November, NASA’s Voyager 1 spacecraft is returning data about the health and status of its onboard engineering systems. Voyager 1 stopped sending readable science and engineering data back to earth on Nov. 14, 2023. The probe and its twin, Voyager 2, are the only spacecraft to ever fly in interstellar space.

Hubble's latest marvel: Twin Jet Nebula stuns everyone!

In the 1980s, NASA's Voyager made a flyby past Uranus and Neptune and helped scientists conclude that the two planets are rich in frozen water.

Now, a new study has suggested that these planets may also contain substantial amounts of methane ice, which could help solve the puzzle of how they were formed.

Mystery in space

Uranus and Neptune have been a source of mystery due to their remote locations and the limited data available

Astronomers have developed models based on these observations, proposing that the planets have a thin hydrogen and helium envelope, a layer of compressed superionic water and ammonia, and a rocky core, with the water component giving them their "ice giant" designation.

Also read | NASA's Juno captures closest views of erupting volcanoes on Jupiter's moon Io. Watch!

However, the new study challenges this view by considering the formation process of Uranus and Neptune. As these planets took shape from the primordial dust cloud around the young sun, they would have gobbled up planetesimals — objects similar to present-day comets, reports space.com.

These planetesimals are believed to be carbon-rich, unlike the assumed water-rich building blocks in current models.

So "How is it possible to form an icy giant from ice-poor building blocks?" asks planetary scientist at Technion–Israel Institute of Technology Uri Malamud, the study's lead author.

Now, a new study has suggested that these planets may also contain substantial amounts of methane ice, which could help solve the puzzle of how they were formed. Mystery in space Uranus and Neptune have been a source of mystery due to their remote locations and the limited data available Astronomers have developed models based on these observations, proposing that the planets have a thin hydrogen and helium envelope, a layer of compressed superionic water and ammonia, and a rocky core, with the water component giving them their "ice giant" designation. To address this discrepancy, the researchers constructed hundreds of thousands of models of Uranus and Neptune's interiors, considering various compositions including iron, water, and methane. They found that models incorporating methane, either as solid chunks or in a mushy state under extreme pressure, best matched the planets' observed traits.
Radar images of a 2,000-foot-wide asteroid were captured by NASA astronomers as the "potentially hazardous" asteroid safely passed by Earth on April 15.

NASA working on a simpler, cheaper and quicker way to bring back samples from Mars

News about NASA: NASA on Monday (April 15) confirmed that an object which crashed through a Florida home's roof was actually a piece of space junk which was equipment discarded at the International Space Station.

On March 8, the cylindrical object that tore through the roof of the home in Naples was eventually taken to the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral to carry out an analysis.

According to the space agency, the object was a metal support used for mounting old batteries on a cargo pallet for disposal.

"Based on the examination, the agency determined the debris to be a stanchion from the NASA flight support equipment used to mount the batteries on the cargo pallet," said agency officials in an update.

In 2021, the pallet was supposedly dropped from the space station, and it was expected that the load would eventually fully burn up after entering into the atmosphere of Earth. However, one piece survived.

"The International Space Station will perform a detailed investigation of the jettison and reentry analysis to determine the cause of the debris survival and to update modelling and analysis, as needed," stated the NASA officials.

NASA will host a media teleconference on April 12, 2024 at 01:00 pm EDT (10:30 pm IST in India) to announce what's happening with NASA's Mars Sample Return mission that's in a difficult situation. During the teleconference, NASA will set out its recommendations for moving forward.

NASA's beleaguered mission has been ongoing for several years now. Perseverance rover, deployed in 2021, is also a part of this mission, whose aim was to gather intriguing samples of Martian rock collected by another mission and return to Earth.

However, last year, an independent review stated that the Mars Sample Return (MSR) had an "unrealistic budget and schedule," an "unwieldy structure," and was "not arranged to be led effectively". Due to this review, the future of the MSR mission became shaky.

Subsequently, the House and Senate appropriations committees suggested a budget that comprised a cut of $454,080,000 to NASA's 2024 budget. The Mars Sample Return Mission suffered heavily due to this.

Moreover, NASA has lowered its overall spending on the mission. The space administration has also laid off several workers and contractors from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which is leading the mission.

The budget cuts and layoffs have led to alarm that NASA might halt the mission and the canisters loaded by Perseverance might be left useless on the Martian surface. However, NASA's upcoming announcement offers a glimmer of hope for the mission.

NASA states, "Mars Sample Return has been a major long-term goal of international planetary exploration for the past two decades. What will happen to Mars Sample Return mission? NASA is set to tell us soon

NASA's Webb Telescope discovered margarita and vinegar-like chemicals on a protostar. They shared this finding on Instagram. These substances were found in two young stars without planets.

"There are two servings in this discovery. This image shows the region near protostar IRAS 23385. Protostar IRAS 2A may be similar to the early stages of our own solar system. Chemicals identified around this protostar may also have been in the first stages of development of our solar system and later delivered to the primitive Earth," the post read.

Scientists have finally found out what's happening to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)'s pioneering Voyager 1 spacecraft, and what's behind the gibberish sounds coming from it in November. NASA launched the space probe Voyager 1 in 1977 to study the outer Solar System, the interstellar space beyond the Sun's heliosphere.

Voyager 1, which is the most distant spacecraft to Earth, has been acting weird and talking gibberish on the interplanetary "radio". It has left the scientists perplexed.

Scientists at a leading gravitational wave observatory detected a mysterious signal with chilling origins. As per reports, the signal has its origins in the collision between a star corpse and an unknown object.

Star corpse?

Yes, star corpse, or better known as the stellar remnant of a neuron star. It is what's left when a massive star collapses, leaving behind only a dense core.

One of the densest objects in the universe, Neutron stars are less dense than black holes, which have gravity so strong that even light cannot escape.

The signal, which was named GW230529_181500, as per Gizmodo, travelled 650 million light-years to reach Earth. It was picked up by the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA Collaboration, a network of observatories, last year. This was, in May 2023, just after it resumed its operations following upgrades to improve sensitivity.

While researchers have identified one object in the collision as likely being a neutron star, the other much object was more massive than any known neutron star, suggesting it could be a small black hole. However, the team will further scrutinise the collision to find out what it exactly is.

This unknown object fills the "mass gap" between the heaviest neutron stars and the lightest black holes. A paper describing the findings has been posted on the LIGO website.

In a release Jess McIver, an astronomer at the University of British Columbia and Deputy Spokesperson of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration said that the detection "reveals that there may be a higher rate of similar collisions between neutron stars and low-mass black holes than we previously thought."

As per the report, only one other merger involving an object in this mass range has been observed before, known as GW190814.

There's a lot to look forward to. The LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA Collaboration is preparing for its fourth observing run, scheduled to start on April 10, 2023, and run until February 2025. During this time, they expect to observe more than 200 gravitational wave signals.

Scientists for the first time have observed a rare phenomenon, called the "glory effect" on a planet that is outside our solar system. The glory effect is a set of rainbow-like colorful concentric rings which occur only under peculiar conditions. Such rings are seen often on Earth, and apart from that the effect has only been found once on another planet, Venus.

In what seems to be the first extrasolar "glory", data by the European Space Agency's CHEOPS Exoplanet Characterization Satellite, along with several other ESA and NASA missions, showed that there could be rainbow rings between the unbearable heat on WASP-76b's day side that faces its sun and the endless night on its dark side.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has named three companies to advance capabilities for a lunar terrain vehicle (LTV)- a rover that astronauts will drive on the Moon. In a statement, NASA said on Wednesday (Apr 3) that astronauts will use the LTV to travel around the lunar surface, conducting scientific research during the Artemis campaign on the Moon and preparing for human missions to Mars.

The companies that have been chosen are- Intuitive Machines, Lunar Outpost, and Venturi Astrolab.

“We look forward to the development of the Artemis generation lunar exploration vehicle to help us advance what we learn at the Moon,” Vanessa Wyche, director of NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, said on Wednesday.

“This vehicle will greatly increase our astronauts’ ability to explore and conduct science on the lunar surface while also serving as a science platform between crewed missions,” Wyche added.

The contract

The statement said that NASA would acquire the LTV as a service from industry. "The indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity, milestone-based Lunar Terrain Vehicle Services contract with firm-fixed-price task orders has a combined maximum potential value of $4.6 billion for all awards," the statement said.

Each provider would begin with a feasibility task order, which would be a year-long special study to develop a system that meets NASA’s requirements through the preliminary design maturity project phase.

"NASA will issue additional task orders to provide unpressurized rover capabilities for the agency’s moonwalking and scientific exploration needs through 2039," the statement further added.

'Explore, transport, collect samples'

NASA said that the LTV would be able to handle the extreme conditions at the Moon's South Pole. Crews would use the terrain vehicle to explore, transport scientific equipment, and collect samples of the lunar surface, much farther than they could on foot, enabling increased science returns.

It now fears boulders may collide with Mars “This vehicle will greatly increase our astronauts’ ability to explore and conduct science on the lunar surface while also serving as a science platform between crewed missions,” Wyche added. The contract The statement said that NASA would acquire the LTV as a service from industry. 'Explore, transport, collect samples' NASA said that the LTV would be able to handle the extreme conditions at the Moon's South Pole. Crews would use the terrain vehicle to explore, transport scientific equipment, and collect samples of the lunar surface, much farther than they could on foot, enabling increased science returns. "Between Artemis missions, when crews are not on the Moon, the LTV will operate remotely to support NASA’s scientific objectives as needed," the statement also said.
