After multiple delays in its journey from Earth to the International Space Station (ISS), now, the Boeing Starliner's return journey to our planet has been jinxed.

NASA and Boeing have announced a delay in the return of the CST-100 Starliner spacecraft on which NASA astronauts Barry "Butch" Wilmore and Sunita "Suni" Williams travelled to the ISS.

When will NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore come home?

As per Reuters, the return spaceflight has been pushed back to June 18.

Originally, Starliner was expected to undock from the ISS on Friday (June 14) and return to Earth after launching its inaugural crew of two NASA astronauts from Florida on June 5.

The delay comes as mission analysts examine issues that could potentially affect the spacecraft's return.

Boeing jinx?: Starliner spacecraft carrying Sunita Williams won't return to Earth till June 18

Our Sun is going through major mood swings, called solar maximum in technical words, which is the season of peak activity on solar surface. During this period, the Sun produces a lot of solar flares which eventually turn into solar storms that can cause atmospheric phenomenon like auroras or northern lights.

Recently, we saw auroras being brought down to many far south places, like in Alabama, due to these solar storms. Scientists were on standby to observe such an event on Mars as well.

Finally, on May 20, NASA recorded a solar flare, which they are calling “the biggest event”, whose details were released on Monday (June 10).

On May 20, a solar flare of X12 class was detected by the Solar Orbiter spacecraft, which is a joint mission between ESA and NASA. X-class flares are known to be the strongest of several types of them.

Moving at the speed of light, the X-rays and gamma rays from the flare arrived first, while the charged particles trailed slightly behind, reaching Mars in just tens of minutes.

Auroras over Mars? NASA observes Mars flare-up during epic solar storm

Beta Pictoris, the second brightest star in the constellation Pictor has been an object of observation for astronomers for years. The star, which is 63 light-years away from us, first came under the radar of astronomers some 20 years ago when they saw a significant amount of dust around it, shining in infrared. The observation was carried out with the help of Spitzer space telescope.

Now, using the much advanced version of Sptizer (which was deactivated in 2020), NASA took to James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to look for the same dust around Beta Pictoris. To their surprise, this infrared shinning dust around the star was gone!

The researchers believe it happened because the dust was pushed away by the radiation of the young star, Beta Pictoris. The Beta Pictoris system is very young, only 20 to 26 million years old.

This push resulted in the cooling off of the dust, which eventually became untraceable. And if dust can be just swept away like this, it means it is not a standard or constant feature of the star and something might have caused it. Astronomers believe this “something” is actually an asteroid collision.

“Beta Pictoris is at an age when planet formation in the terrestrial planet zone is still ongoing through giant asteroid collisions, so what we could be seeing here is basically how rocky planets and other bodies are forming in real time,” lead author Christine Chen, a Johns Hopkins University astronomer, said in a statement.

As per the team, the collision released an enormous amount of dust, equivalent to about 100,000 times the asteroid that brought an end to the non-avian dinosaurs. Beta Pictoris has two gas giant planets that have already formed, but no known terrestrial planets yet.

The mantra “Follow the Water” has been used for a long time by astrobiologists in their search for life beyond Earth.

In the quest for water, scientists have focused on the icy moons of gas and ice giants in our solar system, like Saturn’s Enceladus and Jupiter’s Europa.

It is believed that these moons harbour vast subsurface oceans which is beneath their thick ice crusts. This existence of subsurface oceans has made them compelling targets for future missions.

However, it is a tough challenge for scientists to penetrate these icy shells using conventional remote-sensing instruments like cameras and radar.

The scientists need to depend on other techniques till they start sending landers or rovers which can either melt or drill through the ice for detecting the hidden water bodies.

What is magnetometry?

Magnetometry has emerged as a promising method to detect subsurface oceans. The magnetic fields can penetrate any solid material and give valuable insights regarding the interior of planet-sized bodies.

The instruments can provide competitive sensitivities while at the same time boasting reduced power requirements, smaller size and lower weight, in comparison to traditional magnetometers.

Also Read: Storms on Jupiter powered by processes similar to those on Earth: Study The mantra “Follow the Water” has been used for a long time by astrobiologists in their search for life beyond Earth. Solid-state quantum magnetometers have shown the groundbreaking advancement achieved in the field of magnetometry. Watch: Strongest sign of alien found: The search for life beyond earth The instruments can provide competitive sensitivities while at the same time boasting reduced power requirements, smaller size and lower weight, in comparison to traditional magnetometers. The solid-state quantum magnetometers also have unique quantum advantages, such as self-calibration through spin-nuclear quantum interaction. This helps them compensate for drifts over time. NASA is offering Instagram users a way to explore the universe through a new augmented reality (AR) filter that brings stunning celestial bodies to life on your screen. Using data from the Chandra X-ray Observatory and other space telescopes, this "Instagram experience" immerses you in the beauty of space by placing astronomical objects right next to you on camera. "Travel through the vastness of space and experience several astronomical objects — including the debris fields of exploded stars — with our new interactive Instagram experiences," NASA wrote in an Instagram post. The AR filter can show cosmic phenomena such as the wreckage of supernovae and dense clouds of gas and dust where stars are being born. This innovative tool is part of the celebration of Chandra's 25th anniversary which was launched on July 23, 1999.
It's another delay for Boeing's Starliner spacecraft as the launch on Saturday (June 1) was scrubbed for one day due to some unknown issue.

An automatic hold triggered by the ground launch sequencer, or the computer that launches the rocket, stopped the countdown clock at 3 minutes and 50 seconds ahead of launch.

Boeing's Starliner spacecraft was supposed to blast off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida with two NASA astronauts on board. Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams would travel to the International Space Station in the key test flight.

Last-minute snag halts launch of Boeing’s Starliner, NASA estimates 24-hour turnaround time

Recent media reports suggested that stargazers would witness a rare celestial event on Monday (June 3), with six planets appearing in alignment.

However, NASA has been quick to debunk these claims and provided a more accurate picture of what to expect in the night sky in June.

The initial reports claimed that Mercury, Mars, Neptune, Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus would take part in a "planet parade," a phenomenon where planets align on the same side of the sun.

NASA, in a note titled "Planet Parade," addressed these misconceptions. "Some online sources have shared excitement about a 'parade of planets' visible in the morning sky in early June (June 3 in particular)," NASA stated. "In reality, only two of the six planets supposedly on display (Saturn and Mars) will actually be visible."

Also Read | A group of mammals suddenly disappeared 50,000 years ago. Ancient bone collagen might tell why

NASA explained that during "early June, Jupiter and Mercury will be at or below the horizon during morning twilight and therefore not visible to the naked eye."

In addition to this, the space agency also said that Uranus and Neptune are too faint to be seen without a telescope.

"The closest thing to a planet parade will be June 29, when Saturn, the Moon, Mars, and Jupiter will line up across the morning sky. This arrangement persists into July, and we'll talk more about that lineup," NASA added.

Plenty of other celestial event

While the anticipated six-planet alignment won't occur, there are still plenty of exciting celestial events to look forward to in June.

Saturn and Mars will be visible in the early morning hours throughout the month, and they will be joined by Jupiter later in June.

On June 2, just before sunrise, Mars will be visible just beneath the crescent Moon, with Saturn nearby. The crescent Moon will sit beneath Mars in the morning twilight on June 3.

The new moon will occur on June 6, and the full moon on June 21.

By the final week of June, Jupiter will become visible low in the east before sunrise. "Look for the bright planet around 10 degrees above the horizon this final week of June, forming a line with Mars and Saturn that stretches toward the south," as per the space agency.

"In reality, only two of the six planets supposedly on display (Saturn and Mars) will actually be visible." Also Read | A group of mammals suddenly disappeared 50,000 years ago. Ancient bone collagen might tell why NASA explained that during "early June, Jupiter and Mercury will be at or below the horizon during morning twilight and therefore not visible to the naked eye." In addition to this, the space agency also said that Uranus and Neptune are too faint to be seen without a telescope. "The closest thing to a planet parade will be June 29, when Saturn, the Moon, Mars, and Jupiter will line up across the morning sky. This arrangement persists into July, and we'll talk more about that lineup," NASA added. Plenty of other celestial event While the anticipated six-planet alignment won't occur, there are still plenty of exciting celestial events to look forward to in June. A child of Venus and Earth? This exoplanet also resembles Venus which is generally called Earth’s “twin” due to the similarities they share. "To find it to be such a similar size to Earth was kind of a lovely surprise. So that was a really nice thing to be able to nail down, but I think especially knowing that, in terms of habitability, it could lie between Earth and Venus, is really exciting," Palethorpe said. Gliese 12 b receives about 1.6 times more heat from its star in comparison to the energy Earth receives from the sun, said the scientists. Watch: Gravitas: Most promising indication of life on another planet found The average estimated surface temperature of the planet is only 50°F warmer than Earth’s. Although both Earth and Venus are in the sun's habitable zone, one planet can support life and its atmosphere is favourable while the other planet is inhospitable in nature. The study of Gliese 12 b can help scientists understand why there is a difference between the two. (With inputs from agencies)

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) spotted two biggest pair of black holes colliding into each other some 13 billion light years away from Earth. These giant black holes have been estimated to be as massive as 50 million suns each.

The merging cosmic monsters are neither the biggest nor the oldest black holes ever discovered, but they are still very bafflingly big for such an early time in the universe’s history, notes the European Space Agency (ESA) in an official statement.

The black holes are not just surprisingly huge but also challenge leading theories in the field of cosmology, which fail to explain how objects in the universe could grow so large at such a fast pace.

"Our findings suggest that merging is an important route through which black holes can rapidly grow, even at cosmic dawn," the study’s lead author Hannah Übler, a researcher at the University of Cambridge, said in the statement.

"Together with other Webb findings of active, massive black holes in the distant Universe, our results also show that massive black holes have been shaping the evolution of galaxies from the very beginning."

One key way that supermassive black holes may reach such humungous sizes is by merging with other large black holes in nearby galaxies — a phenomenon that's been detected at various times and places throughout the universe.

The findings of the study were published Thursday (May 16) in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. In the official paper, the researchers said they trained the JWST's infrared cameras on a known black hole system called ZS7, located in an early epoch of the universe known as cosmic dawn.

Detailed observations with JWST revealed the motion of a dense cloud of gas around the black hole, suggesting it was actively growing. It also detected the approximate location of a second black hole located very close by, likely in the process of merging with the first.

"Thanks to the unprecedented sharpness of its imaging capabilities, Webb also allowed our team to spatially separate the two black holes," Übler said.

The team pegged one of the black holes at about t 50 million solar masses and the second black hole, which is "buried" in the dense cloud of gas, likely has a similar mass to its neighbour, but the researchers couldn't get a clear enough view of its radiation to say for sure.
