<p>Researchers have reported the detection of magnesium-sodium phosphate. This came as a sheer shock, as it was not detected earlier by the spacecraft from orbit. This bolsters the theory of Bennu being a splintered-off chunk of a much larger primitive ocean world.</p>

<p>Some phosphate minerals were found on the asteroid sample from Ryugu as well, as collected by the Japanese Space Agency’s Hayabusa-2. They have also been found in meteorites. But Bennu’s case is different because of its minuscule size.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The presence and state of phosphates, along with other elements and compounds on Bennu, suggest a watery past for the asteroid,” Dante Lauretta, co-lead author of the paper and principal investigator for OSIRIS-REx at the University of Arizona, Tucson said in a statement. “Bennu potentially could have once been part of a wetter world. However, this hypothesis requires further investigation.”</p>

<p>“OSIRIS-REx gave us exactly what we hoped: a large pristine asteroid sample rich in nitrogen and carbon from a formerly wet world,” added Jason Dworkin, a co-author on the paper and the OSIRIS-REx project scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.</p>

<p>“We're still coming up with ideas on how to test [the wet parent body hypothesis]. But to me, it's the leading candidate for the geologic environment that these rocks formed in,” Professor Lauretta told IFLScience in an exclusive interview back in March.</p>

<p>The sample of Bennu continues to be distributed to labs in the US and around the world. In March the team presented 58 findings from the initial analysis of the asteroid, and new insights come out almost every week.&nbsp;</p>

After 14 days of delay NASA announced a further postponement in the Boeing Starliner's return to Earth from the International Space Station. Two NASA astronauts, the Indian origin Sunita Williams and Buch Wilmore were supposed to spend 9 days on Boeing's first manned space launch with their return date due on the 14th of June and now it is unclear when will the two leave the space station. A report has emerged saying that the US space agency NASA knew before the launch of a helium leak but it was deemed too minor to pose a safety risk. It means that the return trip of astronauts Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams will not materialise unless all safety checks have been done.</p>

<p>“We look at that as an opportunity and in this case, a privilege to stay on station and do more work,” Boeing’s commercial crew programme lead Mark Nappi said, as per the Sentinel. “We’ve always said this is a test flight. We’re going to learn some things. So here we are,” he added.</p>

<p>Nappi added it was crucial to find out why the spacecraft's thrusters went off during docking. The NASA official said investigating helium leaks was also necessary.</p>

<p>The strange boulder nicknamed ‘Atoco Point’ measured roughly 18 inches across and 14 inches tall, was speckled and conspicuously light-toned.</p>

<p>It was spotted among a field of darker boulders on the ‘Mount Washburn’ hill.</p>

<p>"The diversity of textures and compositions at Mount Washburn was an exciting discovery for the team, as these rocks represent a grab bag of geologic gifts brought down from the crater rim and potentially beyond," said Brad Garczynski of Western Washington University, who co-leads the current Perseverance mission, in a statement.</p>

<p>NASA&nbsp;administrator Bill Nelson says that at least a trillion 'Earth-like' planets are there in the entire universe which increases the possibility of alien life.</p>

<p>He said that NASA has been planning to send back the astronauts to the lunar surface in the days ahead. Four astronauts are set to orbit the moon next year.</p>

<p>The Jezero Crater&nbsp;on Mars, which once existed as a lake on the red planet, was being explored by the Perseverance Rover. According to scientists, several findings suggest that Mars once hosted life and was teeming with rivers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It's getting samples and it's drilling with this drill, creating these core samples about the size of a cigar and sealing them up in these titanium tubes," explained Nelson.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It's a big question as to how molecular biology could be done if it was, done by an organism that does not share a common ancestor, a common origin, with you and me," said Benner.</p>

<p>“So if we could get the commander back in his suit, get it sealed … for suited hyperbaric treatment … Prior to sealing, closing the visor and pressurising the suit, I would like you to check his pulse one more time,” a flight surgeon working at the SpaceX centre was heard saying in the audio that was accidentally aired on YouTube.</p>

<p>On May 20, a solar flare of X12 class was detected by the Solar Orbiter spacecraft, which is a joint mission between ESA and NASA. X-class flares are known to be the strongest of several types of them.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The May 20 flare released X-rays and gamma rays toward Mars, while a coronal mass ejection or CME launched the charged particles. Moving at the speed of light, the X-rays and gamma rays from the flare arrived first, while the charged particles trailed slightly behind, reaching Mars in just tens of minutes.</p>

Auroras over Mars? NASA observes Mars flare-up during epic solar storm

<p>Beta Pictoris, the second brightest star in the constellation Pictor has been an object of observation for astronomers for years. The star, which is 63 light-years away from us, first came under the radar of astronomers some 20 years ago when they saw a significant amount of dust around it, shining in infrared. The observation was carried out with the help of Spitzer space telescope.</p>

<p>Now, using the much advanced version of Sptizer (which was deactivated in 2020), NASA took to James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to look for the same dust around Beta Pictoris. To their surprise, this infrared shinning dust around the star was gone!</p>

<p>The researchers believe it happened because the dust was pushed away by the radiation of the young star, Beta Pictoris. The Beta Pictoris system is very young, only 20 to 26 million years old.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This push resulted in the cooling off of the dust, which eventually became untraceable. And if dust can be just swept away like this, it means it is not a standard or constant feature of the star and something might have caused it. Astronomers believe this “something” is actually an asteroid collision.</p>

<p>The collision is likely the results of planetesimals colliding on their way to form planets, that might one day be like Earth, or Mars, or Venus.</p>

<p>As per the team, the collision released an enormous amount of dust, equivalent to about 100,000 times the asteroid that brought an end to the non-avian dinosaurs. Beta Pictoris has two gas giant planets that have already formed, but no known terrestrial planets yet.</p>

<p>With JWST, the team was able to see the infrared universe to discover such an incredible insight into astronomy.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“In this case, the story is a little different because our results come from what JWST did not see.”</p>

<p>NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory has been quite instrumental in helping astronomers understand how stars are being produced. Researchers say that Westerlund 1 is the closest "super" star cluster to Earth.</p>

<p>According to astronomers, most of the star formations take place in clusters. About 10 million years ago, the Milky Way produced stars in large numbers but this has reduced gradually.</p>

<p>Although our galaxy contains very few super star clusters, the ones that do provide crucial information about the previous period when the majority of the stars in our galaxy evolved. With a mass of 50,000–100,000 Suns, Westerlund 1 is the largest of the Milky Way's surviving mega star clusters. With a distance of almost 13,000 light-years, it is also the nearest super star cluster to Earth.</p>

<p>EWOCS, The Extended Westerlund 1 and 2 Open Clusters Survey is a project run by astronomers at the Italian National Institute of Astrophysics in Palermo. As a part of the project, they monitored Westerlund 1 for roughly a period of 12 days.</p>

<p>NASA's Chandra and Hubble space telescopes have provided crucial information about this super star cluster.</p>

<p>"The X-rays detected by Chandra show young stars (mostly represented as white and pink) as well as diffuse heated gas throughout the cluster (coloured pink, green, and blue, in order of increasing temperatures for the gas)," said NASA's official website.</p>

<p>Westerlund 1 is one of the oldest star clusters to exist and is thus helpful for astronomers to understand the evolution of stars and study them in detail. The EWOCS project has been successful in capturing roughly 6,000 X-ray sources, including stars that have a lower mass than the sun as well.</p>

<p>One of the discoveries made by Chandra is that 1,075 stars are crammed into the core of Westerlund 1 at a distance of four light-years.</p>

EWOCS, The Extended Westerlund 1 and 2 Open Clusters Survey is a project run by astronomers at the Italian National Institute of Astrophysics in Palermo. As a part of the project, they monitored Westerlund 1 for roughly a period of 12 days. <p>As per reports, Williams is known for integrating her Indian roots with her space endeavours.</p>

<p>The 58-year-old astronaut&nbsp;has often shared how she carries elements of her culture into orbit.&nbsp;In previous missions, she had brought sacred Hindu texts such as the Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita, as well as iconic Indian snacks like samosas.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I really appreciate my Indian heritage and was glad I could bring part of it with me to space," Williams said during a 2013 news conference in Delhi.</p>

<p>She also carries a figurine of Ganesh, the elephant-headed Hindu god, with her.</p>

<p>"Ganesh has always been in my house. Everywhere I’ve lived, I’ve had Ganesh, and so he had to come with me to space, of course. And Indian food — you can never get enough of Indian food … so I had to make sure I had some samosas in space with me. Other types of Indian food we definitely had up there as well."</p>

NASA astronaut Sunita Williams carries samosas, pieces of Indian heritage to space

<p>NASA is offering Instagram users a way to explore the universe through a new augmented reality (AR) filter that brings stunning celestial bodies to life on your screen.</p>

<p>Using data from the Chandra X-ray Observatory and other space telescopes, this "Instagram experience" immerses you in the beauty of space by placing astronomical objects right next to you on camera.</p>

<p>"Travel through the vastness of space and experience several astronomical objects — including the debris fields of exploded stars — with our new interactive Instagram experiences," NASA wrote in an Instagram post.</p>

<p>The AR filter can show cosmic phenomena such as the wreckage of supernovae and dense clouds of gas and dust where stars are being born. This innovative tool is part of the celebration of Chandra's 25th anniversary which was launched on July 23, 1999.</p>

<p>Solar flares refer to the bursts of electromagnetic radiation which were released from the&nbsp;surface of the sun.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per Spaceweather.com, electromagnetic radiation has been divided into different classes, which range from 1-10 (and beyond for X-class flares).</p>

<h2><strong>No northern lights with this solar flare</strong></h2>

<p>Since there was less eruptive material during the M-class solar flare, hence there were no chances of the appearance of northern lights.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Such solar eruptions can at times lead to impressive aurora across the world. On June 3, such powerful solar flares can be accompanied by a&nbsp;coronal mass ejection&nbsp;(CME), which is the release of plasma and magnetic field from the surface of the sun.&nbsp;</p>

<p>When Earth is hit by the CMEs, they can lead to geomagnetic storms which can create dynamic aurora that displays beyond their usual polar limits.</p>

<p>NASA said its teams worked overnight to assess the ground support equipment at the launch pad that encountered issues during the countdown and identified an issue with a ground power supply within one of the chassis which provides power to a subset of computer cards controlling various system functions.</p>

<p>The chassis containing the faulty ground power unit was removed, visually inspected, and replaced with a spare chassis, the space agency said.</p>

<p>The CST-200 Starliner's first crewed voyage to the International Space Station (ISS), with two astronauts aboard, remains a key milestone for Boeing as it scrambles to gain a greater share of lucrative NASA business now dominated by Elon Musk's SpaceX.</p>

<p>Once launched, the Starliner is expected to arrive at the space station after a flight of about 24 hours and dock with the orbiting research outpost some 250 miles (402 km) above Earth.</p>
