International Space Station has shared a set of stunning photos and videos showing how Auroras on Earth lit up the surface of the Moon in a riot of colours.

The photos and videos were shared by NASA astronaut Matthew Dominick.

"The aurora have been amazing the past few days. Great timing for trying out a new lens," Dominick said in a post on X.&nbsp;

His photos showed the Moon's surface lit up in stunning shades of red and green with the Soyuz Spacecraft in the foreground.

Dominick shared that the ISS received a cargo shipment earlier this week "with lots of cool stuff to include some new camera lenses."

"Spent a good part of the weekend with a 15mm, T1.8 lens. Made a whole bunch of timelapses. Still looking though 1000s of frames, lots of which have aurora but the milky way in this one stood out," he said.

A study released Monday using data from NASA's Mars InSight lander shows evidence of liquid water far below the surface of the fourth planet, advancing the search for life there and showing what might have happened to Mars' ancient oceans.

A new catalogue of 126 strange worlds was published by NASA which in detail talked about these alien planets and how they are different from Earth.&nbsp;

The most extreme planet amongst them was TOI-1798 which was looked into by Alex Polanski, a physics and astronomy graduate student from the University of Kansas.&nbsp;

In the paper, lead author Polanski explained that this planet's orbit makes it travel very close to an orange dwarf star in a span of less than 12 hours.

What was more interesting was to find that one year on this planet is equal to less than half a day on planet Earth. The planet is also boiling hot as it gets more than 3,000 times the radiation Earth gets from the Sun.

TOI-1798 is not just a planet but a system which has two planets. In this system, the inner planet is like a Super-Earth which is near its star and one year lasts about half an Earth day.&nbsp;

In another paper, which was authored by UCR graduate student Michelle Hill, the discovery of two planets was mentioned which were spotted orbiting a star which is like our Sun that is almost 479 light years away.&nbsp;

Amongst the two, one was planet TOI-1386 b which is a “sub-Saturn” planet whose radius and mass are between that of Neptune and Saturn.

This planet needs just 26 days to orbit its star. Meanwhile, its neighbour TOI-1386 c is a gas giant which is as big as Jupiter, however, has a mass closer to Saturn’s and takes 227 days to complete a roundabout of the same star.&nbsp;

NASA issues sudden alert as massive asteroid comes too close to Earth at scary speed

Mars and Jupiter are warming up in the night sky for their closest encounter of the decade on Wednesday (Aug 14).

While the planets would be more than 350 million miles away from each other in their orbits, from our perspective, they would seem extremely close with just a small gap between them.

As per an AP report, the red planet and the biggest planet will be at their minimum distance, about one-third of a degree or one-third of the moon's width.&nbsp;

The planets will be best visible before dawn in the eastern sky, along the constellation Taurus. This kind of astronomical event, planetary conjunction, only happens once in three years or so.

“Such events are mostly items of curiosity and beauty for those watching the sky, wondering what the two bright objects so close together might be,” said Giorgini in an email to AP. “The science is in the ability to accurately predict the events years in advance.”

The two celestial bodies haven't crossed orbits this close since 2018. This event won't occur again until 2033 when they will be even nearer.

According to Giorgini, the closest Mars and Jupiter had been in the last 1,000 years was in 1761, when they were visible to the naked eye as one bright star. In the future, they will be almost as close in the year 2348.

This exciting linking of Mars and Jupiter will occur during the same time as the Perseid meteor shower. This is one of the brightest showers in the year and will be visible to the naked eye.

The world is set to receive the biggest meteor shower on Earth and NASA has suggested that Americans must leave the cities this weekend and travel to areas where they can witness the magic of the Perseid meteor shower.

The Perseid meteor shower is expected to peak from the evening of Sunday and go on till Monday in which nearly 50 to 75 shooting stars will be visible every hour.

However, the US space agency has warned that the cosmic show might not be visible in its best form in the urban areas because of the light pollution.&nbsp;

NASA has suggested the skygazers move outside between 12 am and 5:30 am to witness the meteors which is expected to appear in the northeastern sky.

The peak period in a meteor shower generally occurs when the sky is dark with no moon which forms the perfect backdrop for such a cosmic event.

But now, NASA has confirmed that the SpaceX Crew 9 mission won't takeoff before September 24, keeping them both in space for almost another eight weeks.&nbsp;

The engineers have conducted rigorous tests to pin down the root cause of the trouble that Starliner faced in June during its test flight, Boeing said on July 25. The spacecraft experienced helium leaks and five thrusters suddenly stopped functioning during the flight.&nbsp;

The purpose of conducting tests is to determine whether Starliner could bring its crew back home. But the efforts seem to be halted now.

Meanwhile, an airplane-sized asteroid 2024 ON2 - which is nearly 120 feet in diameter - will make a close flyby of Earth on August 12. It will fly at a distance of nearly 6.8 million&nbsp;km, however, it has not been marked as a threat.

A 110 feet asteroid 2024 PK1 will make its closest approach to Earth on August 10. The asteroid will pass from Earth at a distance of nearly 6.4 million km.&nbsp;

Asteroid 2024 PN1 is nearly 86 feet in diameter and will make its closest approach to Earth on August 8. It will fly at a distance of nearly 2.4 million&nbsp;km.&nbsp;

Among these asteroids, the smallest one is nearly 58 feet in diameter. It is called 2024 PS1 and it will fly by Earth on August 13.

NASA scientists have tested a technology which is expected to work as a 'lighthouse' on the Moon and provide them with real-time data of astronauts and robotic explorers.

According to the space agency, the scientists successfully tested an autonomous navigation system called Lunar Node 1 (LN-1) demonstrator on Odysseus - which is the lander of Intuitive Machines that touched down on the south pole of the Moon on February 22.

Commonly known as a satellite ground station or an earth station, such facilities perform what is known as Telemetry, Tracking, and Command (TT&C). This involves tracking satellites, issuing commands to satellites, monitoring their health, and downloading data from satellites. This approval for a private satellite ground station is in line with the Indian government's decision to permit private firms to perform all kinds of space activities. Indian companies have already launched experimental rockets and are gearing up for space launches. Meanwhile, multiple Indian-built satellites have been launched from India and abroad. Likewise, the Indian government has now approved the setting up of a ground station by the firm AzistaBST. Dr P K Jain, Director- Program Management and Authorization Directorate (PMAD), IN-SPACe, said, "This authorisation is yet another step by the Government to encourage and enable Indian satellite operators who will now have alternative Indian ground station service providers for their satellite operations and data reception in the UHF band." Many firms that operate satellites do not invest in their own ground stations, which are quite expensive to set up. Instead, they depend on those who operate ground stations and offer their service for a price. The space industry calls it Ground Station as a Service (GSaaS). The private ground station has been approved to operate in the Ultra High Frequency(UHF) band of 300 MHz to 3 GHz. This band is primarily used for satellite communications, including data relay for remote sensing, telemetry, and control of satellites. They support various applications such as weather forecasting, environmental monitoring, and communications for scientific research and military operations. An Indian Earth-imaging satellite constellation In an unprecedented move, the Indian government and private sector are to unite for building a constellation of earth-imaging satellites with multiple sensors. Operating a constellation comprising dozens or hundreds of satellites can help in getting a comprehensive global coverage, and the capability of imaging the same location at regular intervals. Such constellations serve various commercial, scientific and strategic purposes. This includes disaster management, agricultural monitoring, studying environmental changes and surveillance of sensitive areas. As the first step towards building such a constellation, the IN-SPACe released an Expression of Interest (EOI). It invites private Indian firms to build and manage a constellation under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. This long-term project involves the design, development, launch, and maintenance of a constellation of satellites equipped with advanced imaging technologies. These satellites would be placed in Low Earth orbit (a region that is 300-2000 km above the Earth's surface). As they are very close to the Earth, satellites placed in LEO can capture very high-resolution pictures and short videos and can transmit them in near-real-time. The satellites in the proposed constellation are meant to carry a combination of sensors such as panchromatic, multispectral, hyperspectral, and microwave. Once built and tested, these satellites would be placed in orbit by Indian rockets. It must be noted that building and maintaining a satellite constellation is a constant process. In this case, the private firm would have to monitor the health of all satellites in the constellation, download the data generated by the satellites, process the data and offer it for a multitude of applications. The private entity will also have the option of developing their own ground-based facilities to communicate with the satellites, upload commands and download data. Alternatively, they could use the ground-based facilities of Ground Stations as a Service (GSaaS) providers such as AzisatBST. Therefore, this entire project is capable of generating a significant amount of economic activity within India.
