The Sun has had the largest number of sunspots in over 20 years this month, according to the US agencies observing the star.

The estimated Sunspot Number or SNN for 8 August may have reached 299, said the US Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) in Boulder, Colorado.

This is the largest number since at least July 2002, it said on its website. These sunspots occurred in a 24-hour period.

The current solar cycle, which is numbered as Solar Cycle 25, "likely reached its highest SSN thus far on August 8, a value of perhaps 299," it said. A solar cycle, estimated to last 11 years, is how the Sun alternates between its so-called solar minimum and solar maximum.

The official SSN data is released by global agencies in September, though 299 appears to be a possible number. The final number will come from the World Data Center - Sunspot Index and Long-Term Solar Observations (WDC-SILSO).

In fact, the SWPC had recorded the SSN higher at 337, a value not observed since March 2001.

The Sun probably just had the largest number of sunspots in over 20 years: What does it mean?

NASA on Wednesday (August 14) addressed a press conference on Sunita Williams and Barry 'Butch' Wilmore, the two astronauts who are currently stuck on the International Space Station (ISS). The two veteran astronauts were launched into space on June 5 for a mission expected to last eight days. But they have been in space for more than two months as the Boeing Starliner is mired over thruster problems and several helium leaks.

One potential option being considered by NASA to get the astronauts back to Earth is to attach them to a SpaceX Crew Dragon mission that is scheduled to launch in September, and return them to Earth with that mission in February 2025.

That plan would mean the astronauts would spend more than eight months – rather than eight days – aboard the International Space Station (ISS).

If the SpaceX Crew Dragon is used, the Boeing Starliner craft would be returned to Earth without any crew, under computer control.

Here's a summary of what NASA said:

1. NASA claimed that both astronauts are "doing great" and have been keeping busy on the International Space Station. Both veterans are reportedly mentally and physically prepared for unexpected turns on a space mission.

2. The US space agency added that discussions are now being done on whether the crew can return on the Boeing Starliner, the spacecraft that they used to fly there, or would have to return on a SpaceX vehicle.

3. The two could remain in space for eight months if they do have to wait to return on a SpaceX flight. One issue is that of the space suits. The ones Sunita and Buch are wearing are not fit for use on a SpaceX flight, and they would have to return unsuited in that case which would exacerbate the risks to their way back to Earth.

4. NASA said it still has confidence in the Starliner craft, and that it could still be used to return home in case of an emergency.

5. A decision will be made on the astronaut's return by the end of August, though there's no sharp cut-off date.

NASA astronauts will soon be able to livestream their movements from the Moon during future Artemis missions and this will be made possible because of laser technology.

The space communication method is being tested by NASA in which they are using a laser beam for connecting astronauts on the moon with ground control on Earth.

In the first test, the scientists sent a video of Taters the cat using a laser communications streaming service.

The NASA-orchestrated research initiative GOLD mission has observed that strange anomalies resembling alphabets and floating in space may be impacting global communication signals and disrupting navigation.

In the mysterious space of the ionosphere, scientists had long back spotted X and C-shaped charged particles.

NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Centre's research scientist Jeffrey Klenzing said that this discovery will help scientists understand the complex atmosphere of the Earth.

These charged particles form a crucial superhighway for the radio signals that are important in the working of communication and navigation satellites orbiting Earth.

Here's how these charged particles disrupt communication signals

Scientists first observed these X-shaped structures in the ionospheric plasma after significant weather events like solar storms.

However, the GOLD mission recently made an intriguing discovery regarding them.

“NASA’s GOLD mission is the first one to observe the alphabetical shapes unambiguously,” said Fazlul Laskar, who is the lead author of a study and a research scientist at the University of Colorado.

The X- and C-shaped particles were also spotted during “quiet times” when no apparent atmospheric disturbances took place.

“The (appearance of the) X is odd because it implies that there are far more localized driving factors,” Klenzing added.

In the study, the scientists found that the dynamic behaviour of the ionosphere directly impacts global communication and navigation systems and can disrupt GPS signals.

When the geomagnetic storm occurred on May 10, it was observed that GPS guidance systems faced difficulties, as claimed by the tractor company John Deere.

“During solar storms, that signal hits a ‘fog’ of charged particles and can be lost,” said Tim Marquis, who is a senior product manager at John Deere.

These kinds of disruptions can widely impact communications and also disturb the GPS signals which are important in fields like agriculture, shipping, transportation, and construction.

“There could be life-threatening impacts due to the sudden loss of GPS signals in aircraft, ships, and automobiles, which is even scary to imagine,” said Karan, who is the lead author of the study on C-shaped particles.

NASA alerts strange X and C-shaped particles near Earth disturbing global communications

A rare-heard discovery of evidence of hydrations has been made on asteroid Psyche using the data collected by NASA's James Webb Space Telescope.

In the study carried out by the Southwest Research Institute-led team, the presence of hydroxyl molecules was confirmed on the metallic asteroid Psyche's surface.

The existence of the hydrated minerals has shifted the spotlight on the history of the asteroid which has been orbiting the sun between planets Mars and Jupiter.

Asteroid Psyche, which is 140 miles in diameter, is one of the biggest space rocks in the main asteroid belt.

It is a dense and mostly metallic celestial object which is suspected to be the leftover core of some planet that may have gone through a catastrophic collision.

The Psyche spacecraft was launched by NASA on October 13, 2023, and will cover 2.2 billion miles and reach the asteroid in August 2029.

Planetary Science Journal paper's second author Dr Tracy Becker said, "Using telescopes at different wavelengths of infrared light, the SwRI-led research will provide different but complementary information to what the Psyche spacecraft is designed to study."

"Our understanding of solar system evolution is closely tied to interpretations of asteroid composition, particularly the M-class asteroids that contain higher concentrations of metal," said Dr. Stephanie Jarmak, the lead author of the study.

"These asteroids were initially thought to be the exposed cores of differentiated planetesimals, a hypothesis based on their spectral similarity to iron meteorites," she added.

However, if hydration is native to the asteroid then it will have a different evolutionary history in comparison to what current models suggest.

"Asteroids are leftovers from the planetary formation process, so their compositions vary depending on where they formed in the solar nebula," said co-author Dr. Anicia Arredondo

"Hydration that is endogenous could suggest that Psyche is not the remnant core of a protoplanet. Instead, it could suggest that Psyche originated beyond the 'snow line,' the minimum distance from the sun where protoplanetary disk temperatures are low enough for volatile compounds to condense into solids, before migrating to the outer main belt," she added.

Instead, it could suggest that Psyche originated beyond the 'snow line,' the minimum distance from the sun where protoplanetary disk temperatures are low enough for volatile compounds to condense into solids, before migrating to the outer main belt," she added. Water on an asteroid? Scientists find hydration evidence on asteroid Psyche

A study released on August 12 suggests that there may be a vast reservoir of liquid water below the surface of Mars, based on data from NASA's Mars InSight lander. Researcher are suggesting that Mars, which lost its atmosphere billions of years ago, might still harbour significant quantities of water trapped beneath its surface. The amount of water could potentially fill an ocean 1-2 kilometers deep. On Earth, where there's liquid water, there's life—even deep underground. Could the same hold true for Mars?

A new catalogue of 126 strange worlds was published by NASA which in detail talked about these alien planets and how they are different from Earth.

Multiple papers were published related to this survey which specified some of the features of these alien planets.

The most extreme planet amongst them was TOI-1798 which was looked into by Alex Polanski, a physics and astronomy graduate student from the University of Kansas.

In the paper, lead author Polanski explained that this planet's orbit makes it travel very close to an orange dwarf star in a span of less than 12 hours.

What was more interesting was to find that one year on this planet is equal to less than half a day on planet Earth. The planet is also boiling hot as it gets more than 3,000 times the radiation Earth gets from the Sun.

In another paper, which was authored by UCR graduate student Michelle Hill, the discovery of two planets was mentioned which were spotted orbiting a star which is like our Sun that is almost 479 light years away.

Amongst the two, one was planet TOI-1386 b which is a “sub-Saturn” planet whose radius and mass are between that of Neptune and Saturn.

This planet needs just 26 days to orbit its star. Meanwhile, its neighbour TOI-1386 c is a gas giant which is as big as Jupiter, however, has a mass closer to Saturn’s and takes 227 days to complete a roundabout of the same star.

Mars and Jupiter are warming up in the night sky for their closest encounter of the decade on Wednesday (Aug 14).

While the planets would be more than 350 million miles away from each other in their orbits, from our perspective, they would seem extremely close with just a small gap between them.

As per an AP report, the red planet and the biggest planet will be at their minimum distance, about one-third of a degree or one-third of the moon's width.

They will appear in most of the Americas, Europe, and Africa during the daylight hours. However, they will not be visible any different even during the dark sky the previous day or some hours earlier, according to Jon Giorgini of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California.

The planets will be best visible before dawn in the eastern sky, along the constellation Taurus. This kind of astronomical event, planetary conjunction, only happens once in three years or so.

“Such events are mostly items of curiosity and beauty for those watching the sky, wondering what the two bright objects so close together might be,” said Giorgini in an email to AP. “The science is in the ability to accurately predict the events years in advance.”

The two celestial bodies haven't crossed orbits this close since 2018. This event won't occur again until 2033 when they will be even nearer.

The world is set to receive the biggest meteor shower on Earth and NASA has suggested that Americans must leave the cities this weekend and travel to areas where they can witness the magic of the Perseid meteor shower.

The Perseid meteor shower is expected to peak from the evening of Sunday and go on till Monday in which nearly 50 to 75 shooting stars will be visible every hour.

However, the US space agency has warned that the cosmic show might not be visible in its best form in the urban areas because of the light pollution.

NASA has suggested the skygazers move outside between 12 am and 5:30 am to witness the meteors which is expected to appear in the northeastern sky.

The peak period in a meteor shower generally occurs when the sky is dark with no moon which forms the perfect backdrop for such a cosmic event.

"Try to get to the darkest location you can. The darker it is where you are, the more meteors you will see streaking across the sky," wrote NASA, in its press release.

The Perseid meteor shower started on July 14 and will continue till September 1, however, the best viewing is this weekend.

NASA has given the annual meteor showers the nickname of the 'fireball champion' for creating the highest number of super bright meteors.

Here's the best way to watch Perseid meteor shower

For those wishing to watch the Perseid meteor shower, first one should find a place outside the city that has very little light pollution and a clear view of the sky.

To locate the meteor shower, the skygazers need to find the Perseus constellation which is the 24th largest constellation present in the sky. In the night sky, this constellation is located in the northern region.

Here's the best way to watch Perseid meteor shower For those wishing to watch the Perseid meteor shower, first one should find a place outside the city that has very little light pollution and a clear view of the sky. To locate the meteor shower, the skygazers need to find the Perseus constellation which is the 24th largest constellation present in the sky. In the night sky, this constellation is located in the northern region. Sunita Williams could have to stay in space till 2025

NASA has announced a delay in the launch of SpaceX's Crew-9 mission, which was to carry four astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS). The same vehicle could also serve as a backup for Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore after they got stuck in space due to issues with Boeing's Starliner spacecraft.

This “allows more time for mission managers to finalize return planning” for the Boeing spacecraft and its crew, said the space agency in a statement. A press conference regarding the change will be hosted on Wednesday at 12:30 pm ET.

This statement by NASA has given rise to rumours surrounding the fate of Boeing's Starliner, which is stuck at ISS for two months along with the two crewmembers.

In July, NASA suggested that the SpaceX Crew-9 mission could take off as early as August 18, after Williams and Wilmore returned to Earth via Starliner. But now, NASA has confirmed that the SpaceX Crew 9 mission won't takeoff before September 24, keeping them both in space for almost another eight weeks.

The engineers have conducted rigorous tests to pin down the root cause of the trouble that Starliner faced in June during its test flight, Boeing said on July 25. The spacecraft experienced helium leaks and five thrusters suddenly stopped functioning during the flight.

The purpose of conducting tests is to determine whether Starliner could bring its crew back home. But the efforts seem to be halted now.

On July 26, NASA stated that a “flight readiness review” for the spacecraft is expected to start in early August. However, the space agency confirmed to CNN that it has not begun yet as the return date of Starliner is uncertain.

NASA’s acting press secretary, Meira Bernstein, has said that the final decision of when Williams and Wilmore return home lies in the hands of administrator, Bill Nelson.

“His top priority, as always, is the safety of the crew,” Bernstein said.

Boeing has maintained their confidence in Starliner bringing home its crew, according to their August 2 statement. NASA has also indicated that tapping SpaceX for the mission is a contingency but not the desired plan.

Williams and Wilmore have been at the space station for 61 days since their docking on June 6.

NASA faces tight deadline to return stranded astronauts to Earth

NASA has been planning to set up a lighthouse on the lunar surface which will guide the astronauts and robots who will soon be exploring the Moon.

NASA scientists have tested a technology which is expected to work as a 'lighthouse' on the Moon and provide them with real-time data of astronauts and robotic explorers.

According to the space agency, the scientists successfully tested an autonomous navigation system called Lunar Node 1 (LN-1) demonstrator on Odysseus - which is the lander of Intuitive Machines that touched down on the south pole of the Moon on February 22.

NASA issued a sudden warning after a massive 410-foot asteroid '2024 OC' was spotted hurtling towards Earth at a scary speed on August 4 (Sunday) to make its closest approach at 16:10 UTC.

The asteroid, which is as big as a large building, will fly by Earth at a dangerous speed of 35,986 km/h. Asteroid 2024 OC is part of the Apollo asteroids which have been making their closest approach to Earth recently.

These asteroids are near-Earth objects (NEOs) and have orbits that cross the path of the Earth. Although most NEOs do not carry the risk of impact, some of them are considered potentially hazardous asteroids (PHAs) and need closer monitoring.

The asteroids which are larger than about 460 feet (140 metres) and have orbits which bring them at a distance of 7.5 million kilometres from the orbit of the Earth are considered as potentially hazardous.

Even though 2024 OC is sizable, it is expected to pass by Earth at a safe distance of 7.4 million kilometres. Even though it is making a close approach, the asteroid fails to meet the criteria of a PHA because of its slightly smaller size.

However, NASA has been tracking such objects to ensure that Earth does not face any danger.

NASA on alert after 410ft massive asteroid suddenly spotted hurtling towards Earth. If it hits...

NASA is now running on a critical deadline of 19 days to bring back astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore from the ISS who are stuck in space because their Boeing Starliner spacecraft has encountered some technical issues.

There have been malfunctions in the thruster and helium system because of which their return has been delayed and now the 19-day deadline has emerged because the Crew-9 mission nears.

The engineers have been tirelessly working to resolve the issues along with considering the potential alternatives, including a SpaceX Dragon capsule, to ensure the safe return of the astronauts amidst a challenging mission.

The Starliner had docked at the ISS on June 13, 2024, and was earlier scheduled to make a comeback to Earth after completing a week-long mission.

Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams launched from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station on June 5, 2024, in Florida.

How did the Starliner get stuck in space?

The aim of the mission was to test the Starliner in their first manned flight, which is a major milestone for the commercial crew programme of Boeing.

The spacecraft was able to dock with the ISS successfully, however, as it approached, five of its 28 thrusters had shut down unexpectedly.

Also, the engineers found five small helium leaks in the service module of the spacecraft. Because of these issues, the Starliner was not able to safely undock and return to Earth.

NASA and Boeing's engineers are now working continuously to solve the issues with the Starliner.

NASA’s commercial crew program manager, Steve Stich, said that they have not yet determined a return timeline for Williams and Wilmore.

The thrusters and helium systems of the spacecraft are important for its safe re-entry into the atmosphere of the Earth and any malfunction can pose a significant risk to the safety of the astronauts.

Why is NASA facing the deadline and how it is complicating astronauts' rescue?

The rescue mission of the astronauts is facing a complication because the upcoming Crew-9 mission needs the docking ports at the ISS which is currently accommodated by the Starliner.

The Crew-9 mission will be launched on August 18, 2024 and will transport NASA astronauts Zena Cardman, Nick Hague, and Stephanie Wilson, along with Roscosmos cosmonaut Alexander Gorbunov, to the ISS through a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft.

The Crew-9's arrival has added urgency to the situation as the docking port needs to be cleared for which the Starliner needs to be moved.

If the Starliner doesn't become operative, NASA will have to find alternative methods to bring Williams and Wilmore back to Earth, which also includes chances of using a SpaceX Dragon capsule.

Speaking about the concerns raised regarding Starliner's performance and safety, Commander Wilmore said that they are confident about returning safely.

"We're absolutely confident," he said, as he spoke about the readiness of the team to adapt procedures based on new data.

As the deadline approaches, the world continues to watch how NASA will resolve this crisis and end this critical mission successfully.

Also Read: When will Sunita Williams return home? Indian-origin astronaut speaks from space Also, the engineers found five small helium leaks in the service module of the spacecraft. Watch: China space rocket blows up, causes massive fireball If the Starliner doesn't become operative, NASA will have to find alternative methods to bring Williams and Wilmore back to Earth, which also includes chances of using a SpaceX Dragon capsule. (With inputs from agencies)

During his stay in space, as part of the Axiom-4 mission, the chosen Indian astronaut will be undertaking scientific research and technology demonstration experiments aboard the ISS.

What is Gaganyaan? What is India preparing its astronaut candidates for?

India has revealed the names of four astronaut candidates who are to fly on the country's homegrown 'Gaganyaan' programme that aims to fly an astronaut-carrying capsule to Earth's orbit (400 km above the planet's surface) and bring them back safely for an oceanic splashdown landing. Gaganyaan was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2018, as India's maiden mission to fly humans (trained astronauts) to space.

Gaganyaan would be carried out by the Indian Space Agency ISRO, with test pilots of the Indian Air Force, serving as the crew members. The four candidates have already completed their training at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Moscow, and are presently undergoing training at ISRO and Indian Air Force facilities, while also assisting ISRO teams in designing and developing some systems required for Gaganyaan.

Gaganyaan is the first step in a series of sustained human spaceflight missions that India wants to carry out in a phased manner. By the end of this decade, India hopes to put an uncrewed space station in Earth orbit. By 2035, it would be used as a crewed Indian outpost that's circling the earth. India also plans to land its astronauts on the moon by 2040, a feat that only America has accomplished in 1969, and China hopes to do so by the end of this decade.

Soviets flew the first Indian to space in 1984; the US to fly 2nd Indian to space in 2024

In 1984, 40 years ago, Indian Air Force Pilot Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma flew to space as part of the Soviet Interkosmos programme. He is the only Indian to have flown to space. He did so on the Soviet Soyuz T-11 mission to the Salyut-7 space station, a lab that circles above the Earth.

Gaganyaan is India's own attempt at launching astronauts to space on a largely homegrown mission, with support from the US, Russia, and France, among others. Of these, Russia (erstwhile Soviet Union) and the US have been the pioneers of human spaceflight, since the Cold War era.

In 2023, during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's State visit to the US, President Joe Biden had announced that 'NASA would provide advanced training to Indian astronauts at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, with a goal of mounting a joint effort to the International Space Station (ISS) in 2024.

Given that India's only experience of human spaceflight comes from Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma who went to space 40 years ago, the 2024 mission to the ISS is expected to offer significant insights and experiences related to contemporary spaceflight and relevant technologies. This would offer crucial lessons to ISRO and its chosen candidate, as it prepares for the homegrown Gaganyaan mission.

At present, India is in the process of gradually testing various systems and technologies required to execute an uncrewed Gaganyaan mission, slated for later this year or in early 2025. After a couple of flawless uncrewed missions, India will embark on the astronaut-carrying mission, perhaps, by 2026.
