The record-breaking warming in the Antarctic stratosphere in the month of July disrupted the polar vortex and affected global weather patterns.

This event was a little different from the frequent warmings of the Arctic and is likely to have impacted the weather phenomena and ozone levels in the Southern Hemisphere.

Here's how stratospheric warming impacted the polar vortex

NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Centre's atmospheric scientists, Lawrence Coy and Paul Newman, were surprised to find this sudden stratospheric warming.

Coy and Newman worked on data assimilation and looked into the models of Earth’s atmosphere created for NASA’s Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO).

“The July event was the earliest stratospheric warming ever observed in GMAO’s entire 44-year record,” said Coy.

The scientists said that the westerly winds, which were present in this layer of the atmosphere, loop across the South Pole in winter and form what is called as the polar vortex.

However, this symmetric circumpolar flow was disrupted, which led to a weakening of the winds and the flow to alter its shape.

The polar vortex, instead of circulating the South Pole, turned elongated and the winds weakened, which caused considerable stratospheric warming over Antarctica.

The researchers have been investigating what was the origin of disturbances which led to the disruption of the stratosphere.

“Variations in sea surface temperatures and sea ice can perturb these large-scale weather systems in the troposphere that propagate upwards,” said Newman. “But the attribution of why these systems develop is really difficult to do," he added.

NASA’s manager for the Commercial Crew program, Steve Stich was up-front about Boeing's and US space agency's differences in opinions about the rescue plan for Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams. After several discussions, the aerospace company and the government body concluded that it was not safe for the astronauts to be aboard the faulty starliner during its journey to Earth.

The Boeing spacecraft is set to embark on the interstellar ride back to Earth without the crew on 5 September and is expected to reach Earth on 7 September. Meanwhile, Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore were asked to wait at the International Space Station For the SpaceX Crew-9 mission to rescue them in February 2025. The original mission was completely discarded because of the Starliner's defective state due to helium leaks and thruster malfunctions. The astronaut duo was supposed to complete their to-and-fro journey from ISS to Earth on Starliner, but the safety of the astronauts is being prioritised, and the situation is currently not in Boeing’s favour.

NASA is on alert as 140-foot giant asteroid zooms towards Earth. Is it threatening our planet?

It has been always known that there are gravity and magnetic fields present on planet Earth.

However, an international team of scientists, with the help of a NASA suborbital rocket, was able to measure a planet-wide electric field successfully, which has been found to be as fundamental to planet Earth as are magnetic and gravity fields.

The ambipolar electric field was first hypothesized more than 60 years ago by scientists based on how the atmosphere of our planet can escape above the North and South Poles of the Earth.

NASA's Endurance mission rocket's measurements have now confirmed that the ambipolar field exists and its strength was also quantified, which revealed the field's role in pushing atmospheric escape and giving shape to the ionosphere, which is a layer of the upper atmosphere.

Earth's electric field pushes particles out of atmosphere: Study

Scientists have tried to understand the evolution and complex movements of the atmosphere of our planet because it gives clues regarding the history of Earth and also gives insight into the mysteries of different planets and helps them understand which of them has the potential of becoming hospitable to life.

The experts have already published a research paper on this topic in the journal Nature.

The spacecraft, which has been flying over the poles of Earth since the late 1960s, detected a stream of particles that was spotted flowing from our atmosphere into space.

The outflow was predicted by the theorists, which they called the "polar wind" as the researchers tried to understand its causes.

In this polar wind, a lot of particles were cold and had no signs of getting heated but were still travelling at supersonic speeds.

"Something had to be drawing these particles out of the atmosphere," said Glyn Collinson, who is the lead author of the paper and principal investigator of Endurance at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

The scientists suspected that a yet-to-be-discovered electric field may have caused this polar wind.

The hypothesized electric field, which was generated at the subatomic scale, was predicted to be very weak since effects were felt only across hundreds of miles.

In 2016, Collinson and his team invented a new instrument, which was then used to measure the ambipolar field of Earth.

"Any planet with an atmosphere should have an ambipolar field. Now that we've finally measured it, we can begin learning how it's shaped our planet as well as others over time," Collinson said.

NASA regularly monitors asteroids that are moving towards Earth. Now, the space agency has started working on an infrared telescope that will keep an eye on these rocks from space. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory is creating the asteroid-hunting spacecraft called NEO Surveyor (Near-Earth Object Surveyor), which will hunt for asteroids and comets that might pose a danger to our planet.

It is the first space telescope that has been designed specifically for planetary defence purposes. The launch has been planned for the end of 2027 and will be placed a million miles away at the L1 Lagrange point - a point between Earth and the Sun.

Once here, it will block sunlight to let the mission find and track near-Earth objects that might be coming from the direction of the Sun.

The telescope will especially be useful to track asteroids called Earth Trojans, which are hard to spot from the ground or the orbit.

The detectors of the telescope can observe two bands of infrared light that the human eye cannot see. Asteroids that are not visible otherwise glow brightly in infrared because of the Sun. This technology will, therefore, help locate dark asteroids and comets which don’t reflect a lot of visible light.

Aim of NEO spacecraft

“NEO Surveyor is optimised to help us to do one specific thing: enable humanity to find the most hazardous asteroids and comets far enough in advance so we can do something about them,” Amy Mainzer, survey director for NEO Surveyor and a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, said.

She added that the aim is to have a spacecraft that can find objects "with the greatest chance of hitting Earth. In the process, we will learn a lot about their origins and evolution.”

The only instrument on the spacecraft will be this high-end telescope. It has a blocky aluminium body and is the size of a washer-and-dryer set. It will rely on curved mirrors that will focus light onto its infrared detectors and minimise optical aberrations.

With the NEO Surveyor, NASA aims to move forward towards reaching the goal set by the US Congress. Under this, the space agency needs to find and characterise at least 90 per cent of the near-Earth objects which are more than 460 feet (140 metres) in size and likely to come within 30 million miles (48 million kilometres) of our planet’s orbit.

Notably, if such objects hit Earth, significant damage can happen.

NASA issues sudden alert as massive house-sized asteroid hurtles towards Earth at scary speed

Five massive asteroids will pass by Earth this week- from August 27 to September 1, warns NASA. The American space agency‘s Jet Propulsion Laboratory actively tracks these Near Earth Objects (NEOs) and has confirmed that five asteroids are set to pass by Earth.

Though NASA has confirmed that these flyby asteroids don’t pose any threats to Earth, they will be close enough for astronomers and scientists to observe them.

Here are the five asteroids that are set to make a flyby to Earth:

Asteroid 2020 RL

Asteroid 2020 RL is a 110-foot near-Earth asteroid that approached Earth on August 27. The asteroid posed no risk to Earth; however, its size and distance of 46.8 lakh km at the time of its approach were ideal for scientists and asteroid enthusiasts to study these celestial objects.

Asteroid 2021 RA10

Set to make its closest approach to Earth at a range of 26.1 lakh km on August 28, Asteroid 2021 RA10 is one of the asteroids that will fly by Earth. The estimated size of this asteroid is 92 feet, which is almost the same size as an aeroplane. Such asteroids are always under strict surveillance for any potential threat by NASA.

Asteroid 2012 SX49

With a diameter of 64 feet and an overall size similar to that of a house, this asteroid is moving towards Earth and will make its closest approach on August 29. Asteroid 2012 SX49 will be at a distance of 42.9 lakh km at its closest. While this too poses no threat, observing it closely helps scientists develop data that will assist them in implementing planetary defence systems.

Asteroid 2016 RJ20

Asteroid 2016 RJ20 is, again, an airplane-sized asteroid, which is 64 feet in size. The nearest this asteroid will come to Earth is at a distance of 6,990,000 kilometres. It will fly by Earth on August 30.

Asteroid 2021 JT

Among the five asteroids, Asteroid 2021 JT is probably the smallest asteroid approaching Earth. It is just 38 feet in size and will move past Earth on September 1 at a safe distance of about 63.6 lakh kilometres.

Asteroids are nothing but rocky, icy or debris left over the formation of Earth some 4.6 billion years ago and these Near Earth Asteroids (NEAs) are found in the asteroids and are found in a belt between Jupiter and Mars.

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory plays an essential role in tracking these asteroids using the Center for Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS), which uses the data from telescopes to calculate the orbits of near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) and analyze their the possibility of risk to our planet.

Elon Musk’s SpaceX will use one of its capsules to bring home astronauts stuck at the International Space Station next year, in a fresh setback for rival Boeing that also raises questions about how NASA will staff the orbiting lab moving forward.

NASA announced on Saturday that Boeing's Starliner capsule will return empty from the International Space Station (ISS) due to ongoing issues with its propulsion system.

NASA announced on Saturday that Boeing's Starliner capsule will return empty from the International Space Station (ISS) due to ongoing issues with its propulsion system. This latest setback adds to Boeing's challenges, with CNBC reporting that the company's losses in the Starliner programme have now exceeded $1 billion. How will Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams come back? Astronauts Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams, who were originally supposed to return on the Starliner, will now come back to Earth aboard SpaceX's Crew-9 vehicle in February 2025, after extending their stay on the ISS by six months. Why did NASA choose SpaceX for the return mission? A "technical disagreement" between NASA and Boeing led to this decision, with NASA choosing to prioritise safety and opting for SpaceX to handle the crew's return. Ken Bowersox, NASA associate administrator, mentioned that NASA officials unanimously agreed to select SpaceX for bringing the crew back home. SpaceX will now carry two astronauts on its Crew-9 vehicle instead of the originally planned four, to accommodate Wilmore and Williams. Also read: Watch: Musk's AI now makes him and Trump armed robbers in new deepfake videos "Boeing has worked very hard with NASA to get the necessary data to make this decision," NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said on Saturday. Following the decision, NASA will carry out an additional phase of its Flight Readiness Review to determine the best time to bring the empty Starliner capsule back to Earth. NASA's disagreement with Boeing regarding safety measures Despite Boeing's assurances that the Starliner was safe for emergency crew return, NASA disagreed. Nelson expressed his support for Boeing, saying he was "100% certain" that Starliner would eventually launch with a crew again. In a statement on X, Boeing said, "We continue to focus, first and foremost, on the safety of the crew and spacecraft. We are executing the mission as determined by NASA, and we are preparing the spacecraft for a safe and successful uncrewed return. (With inputs from agencies)

Sunita Williams and Barry Wilmore – astronauts of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) – have been stuck in space for more than two months now. Wilmore and Williams blasted off for the International Space Station (ISS) on Boeing's Starliner on June 5. They were meant to stay on the ISS for eight days. However, their return has been delayed by thruster malfunctions that came to light during the first crewed mission to the ISS by a Boeing spacecraft. There are widespread concerns about when will the two astronauts return and how safe will their entry back home be. Addressing a press conference last week, NASA officials said that they were still analysing thruster data, but a decision on whether to use Starliner or SpaceX was looming. Rudy Ridolfi, former Space System Commander in the US military, explained three frightening scenarios that could play out if they choose to go ahead with Starliner for the astronauts' journey back to Earth. The scenarios by Ridolfi Speaking to The Daily Mail earlier this month Ridolfi said that if Williams and Wilmore were to return back home in the Starliner, they could vapourise upon re-entry of Earth's orbit or be stuck floating in space. Five thrusters failed during the 24-hour journey that took the two astronauts to the ISS back in June. One of the main concerns is that more thrusters could fail on the return leg, leaving them floating in limbo, somewhere between the ISS and Earth. The Daily Mail report on August 8 said that based on the amount of oxygen and power capabilities that Starliner has, the crew would have about 96 hours to revive thrusters and land back on Earth. The crew would need to determine which thrusters have malfunctioned with the hopes of sealing them and still have enough resources to spend a few hours travelling home. It could be possible that the craft does make it to Earth even in this scenario, Ridolfi told the publication. A rescue craft to Starliner ship The report also pointed out that in a worst-case scenario, NASA could be forced to send a rescue craft to the Starliner ship to retrieve Williams and Wilmore. Such a rescue has only been performed once and that too to rescue an unmanned spacecraft. "NASA knows how to do this, but it just takes time. If Starliner bounces off the atmosphere they have to locate it. You can get a general guess of where it is, but you have to start taking radar, and optical observations and calculate the orbit that it's now in." This rescue mission can be accomplished by attaching a tunnel-like structure that would latch onto Starliner's hatch, allowing it to open without harming the astronauts. In this situation, Ridolfi said that once Starliner is located, NASA would have to train another team of astronauts to perform the docking mission. (With inputs from agencies)

NASA’s Sunita Williams, Barry Wilmore face 96-hour oxygen limit on Starliner: Expert warns of space standoff

NASA will provide an update Saturday on whether Boeing Co.’s Starliner spacecraft will be used to bring astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams back from their extended stay on the International Space Station.

NASA to give update on Sunita Williams and Barry Wilmore's return

Today NASA will make a very important decision regarding the fate of Boeing's problematic Starliner spacecraft. There's a lot of speculation growing and concerns about this and to get us an astronaut's perspective of overstaying in space, WION's principal correspondents spoke to Russian cosmonaut Sergey Vladimirovich Korsakov who has stayed in space for longer than 6 months.

Our universe is full of mysteries and wonders, most of which are beyond our comprehension. Planets outside our solar system, called exoplanets, are one such marvel since their discovery in the early 1990s.

Most of the exoplanets orbit other stars. However, there are some known as rogue planets, which float freely in space and are not bound to a star. NASA. so far, has discovered over 5,200 exoplanets. It is believed that about a billion remain undiscovered by mankind.

This planet appears like a calm, glassy blue marble, but in reality has turbulent weather. The surface of HD 189733 b receives molten glass rains along with supersonic winds of speed about 5,600 miles per hour. It has an extended atmosphere that captures much more radiation. The planet was discovered by NASA in 2005 and has been observed by scientists for its unique weather and atmosphere.

WASP-76b

Spotted in 2013, WASP-76b is an exoplanet where it rains molten iron. One side of the planet remains exposed to the Sun, causing the temperatures to reach as high as 2,500 degrees Celsius, which can vaporise iron. The other side of the planet experiences rains of molten iron after the iron vapour is carried there by the strong winds.

Gliese 1132 b

Similar to our planet in more than one way, Gliese 1132 b has its radius, mass, and even age much like the Earth. However, it orbits its dwarf star much closer and only takes about 1.6 Earth days to complete the orbit. Due to its proximity, it has a much higher temperature of about 137 degrees Celsius and experiences intense radiation, which results in high volcanic activity. The gases released create a second atmosphere around the surface.

Upsilon Andromeda b

This exoplanet is tidally locked to its star and experiences temperatures as high as 1,600 degrees Celsius on its dayside. The nightside experiences cold temperatures as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius. According to NASA the reason for this huge difference between the temperatures of the two sides could be the massive size of its parent star, which creates a hot spot hitting directly over it.

This exoplanet was discovered by the Kepler telescope in 2001 and tidally locked to its star, which is similar to the Sun. It has a hot surface temperature of over 1,300 degrees Celsius and it is likely covered with lava. The exoplanet also creates molten droplets of silicates and iron and experiences harsh radiation.

NASA is on alert as massive 110-feet asteroid 2020 RL is about to make its close approach to Earth on August 27.

The asteroid, which is around the size of a commercial aeroplane, will pass the Earth at a scary distance of 2.91 million miles.

This is a close approach but it is not dangerous as this is more than 12 times the distance between the Earth and the Moon, which is a safe distance as per the cosmic standards.

The asteroid is hurtling towards Earth at a staggering speed of about 20,000 miles per hour. NASA’s Near-Earth Object Observations Programme, which tracks space rocks, marked 2020 RL as not being a potential threat to Earth.

Asteroid 2020 RL, even though it is not the largest or closest space rock to fly by Earth, is significant because of its size and proximity.

Such asteroids are not uncommon and provide opportunities for scientists to study the trajectory, composition and potential impact risks of Near-Earth Objects (NEOs).

The observations of such objects help in refining models of their orbits and also help in decoding the behaviour of asteroids when they come close to the Earth.

NASA and other space agencies have been monitoring NEOs to ensure they are able to identify any potential threats in advance.

On August 28, the 92-foot asteroid 2021 RA10 will fly by Earth and asteroid 2012 SX49, which is 110 feet wide, will make its close approach on August 29.

How is NASA tracking asteroids?

NASA, along with other space agencies, has established a network of telescopes and advanced computing for identifying near-Earth objects (NEOs).

Even though many of the NEOs don't come very near to Earth, some of them do come at a scary distance and get tagged as potentially hazardous asteroids which need more attention.

Such asteroids are more than 460 feet (140 metres) in size and their orbits bring them within a distance of 7.5 million kilometres from Earth. NASA's Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) has been monitoring all the NEOs and looking for any potential impact risks.

NASA is hiring interns! A golden chance to work with the US space agency, check details

NASA has spotted a rouge space body moving at extremely high speed in the Milky Way. This hyper-speed object is over 27,306 times the size of Earth and might exit our galaxy pretty soon, as per the scientists. A group of citizen scientists working with NASA's 'Backyard Worlds: Planet 9' project made the spectacular and shocking discovery.

The hypervelocity object was cruising at a speed of one million miles per hour at the time it was spotted. Right now, it is more than 400 light-years from Earth.

Its high speed means that it will soon break free of Milky Way’s gravity and shoot into intergalactic space. The scientists aren't fully sure what the celestial object is, but it is likely a brown dwarf. Such bodies are stars that are larger than a planet but have so little mass that they can't sustain long-term nuclear fusion like our sun.

German citizen-scientist Martin Kabatnik, a part of NASA's Backyard Worlds programme, said in a statement, "I can't describe the level of excitement."

"When I first saw how fast it was moving, I was convinced it must have been reported already."

If the object does turn out to be a brown dwarf, it would be the first time that such a body would have been documented in a chaotic, hyper-speed orbit and capable of escaping our galaxy.

Also Read: Martian rocks containing signs of life to be brought to Earth

Martin Kabatnik, Thomas P. Bickle and Dan Caselden first spotted the object a few years ago. Several ground-based telescopes were used to confirm the discovery after which it was characterised and named CWISE J124909.08+362116.0 in the books, and is known as CWISE J1249 in short.

What created the hyper-velocity object?

The object seems to be from one of the first generations of stars in our galaxy. Data gathered using the WM Keck Observatory in Maunakea, Hawaii, shows that the quantity of iron and other metals in it is far less compared to other stars and brown dwarfs. This means that it is likely quite old.

Scientists believe that the supposed brown dwarf was once part of a two-star or binary-star system. However, after its white dwarf sister star died off, a nuclear fusion reaction called a supernova was triggered, leading to it becoming a runaway cosmic body.

Another theory suggests that CWISE J1249 originated inside a globular cluster of stars from where the pull of a black hole led it to run off.

Astronomer Dr Kyle Kremer, who is working with the team to understand the object, said in a statement, "When a star encounters a black hole binary, the complex dynamics of this three-body interaction can toss that star right out of the globular cluster."
