Several giants in AI have jumped into the ring, notably Meta, which has urged the administration to "clarify that the use of publicly available data to train models is unequivocally fair use."

If Trump's White House takes that advice, it could push the balance against music professionals, even if the courts theoretically have the last word.

The landscape is hardly better in Britain, where the Labor government is considering overhauling the law to allow AI companies to use creators' content on the internet to help develop their models, unless rights holders opt out.

More than a thousand musicians, including Kate Bush and Annie Lennox, released an album in February entitled "Is This What We Want?" -- featuring the sound of silence recorded in several studios -- to protest those efforts.

For analyst Goldman, AI is likely to continue plaguing the music industry -- as long as it remains unorganized.

"The music industry is so fragmented," he said. "I think that that winds up doing it a disservice in terms of solving this thing."

Previously on Flashback Friday, we explored K-pop’s economic influence in South Korea.

Today, we take a closer look at how the industry is striking a chord in the stock market, blending music with financial momentum.

The K-pop phenomenon

K-pop transcends its signature infectious rhythms, catchy lyrics, and precisely choreographed performances to emerge as a global cultural and economic force.

Beyond captivating millions of fans worldwide, the industry has become a powerful driver of South Korea’s economy, leaving a notable imprint on its stock market and reshaping the business of entertainment on an international scale.

A market capitalisation symphony

HYBE Corporation, the home to global sensations like BTS, has consistently dominated the South Korean entertainment market in terms of market capitalisation.

As of August 2024, HYBE's market cap reached a staggering 7.4 trillion South Korean won which is approximately $5 billion, showcasing the immense investor confidence and global appeal of its artists.

This dominance has solidified K-Pop's position as a major player in the country's financial landscape.

The stock market dance party

The correlation between K-Pop popularity and stock prices is undeniable.

In May 2023, the top four K-Pop entertainment companies - HYBE, SM Entertainment, YG Entertainment, and JYP Entertainment - experienced a remarkable surge in their share prices, averaging a 75.1 per cent increase year-to-date.

This outperformance compared to the S&P 500's 8.3 per cent growth during the same period had put the spotlight on the unique investment potential offered by the K-pop industry.

The predictive power of fandom

A recent study revealed that public interest in K-pop acts can be a powerful predictor of stock prices.

By analysing social media trends, online searches, and streaming data, researchers discovered a strong correlation between increased fan engagement and upward movements in the corresponding company's stock.

This suggests that investor sentiment can be significantly influenced by the popularity and passion of K-pop fandoms.

Beyond the stage: Economic impact

K-pop's influence extends far beyond the music industry, impacting the broader South Korean economy in several ways:

Export Powerhouse: K-content exports, including K-Pop, reached a record high of $12.4 billion in 2021, contributing significantly to the country's export revenue.

Job Creation: The K-Pop industry has created numerous jobs, both directly in entertainment companies and indirectly in related sectors such as tourism, merchandise, and technology.

Economic Value: A study by the Hyundai Research Institute estimated that BTS alone contributed over $3.67 billion to the Korean economy annually in 2018, highlighting the immense economic value of K-Pop acts.

K-Pop's economic crescendo

K-pop has not only captivated audiences worldwide but has also become a powerful player in the South Korean stock market, influencing market capitalisation, stock performance, and investor confidence.

The success of K-pop artists has even become a unique barometer for predicting stock trends, making it a key factor for investors to monitor.

A song about immigrants was among the top 50 on German music charts this month, but there's a twin problem: It is entirely AI-generated, and appears to use terms and expressions considered racist and stereotyping of immigrant communities.

The song in question is “Verknallt in einen Talahon", meaning 'In Love with a Talahon'.

The song made by Josua Waghubinger, who goes by his artist name Butterbro, peaked at 48 this month in Germany, the world's fourth largest music market, before falling. It is still among top 100, having gone down to 83 at the time of writing this.

The music, vocals and artwork were entirely generated using artificial intelligence, using the AI platform Udio, reported The Guardian. Waghubinger said he made the song's chorus by feeding his own lyrics into Udio.

The song is conceived as a parody, using modern lyrics, and appears to stress on stereotypes about migrants, with beats reminiscent of Schlager pop. Schlager is a pop music genre that was popular in Europe in the 1960s.

Less than a month into its debut, the song has amassed 3.5 million streams on Spotify and went on to become third on its global viral hits chart. It's up on other streamers like Apple Music and Shazam too. Videos based on the song have gone viral on TikTok.

"Very broadly, 'Talahon' describes young men with a migrant background, a specific clothing style, and who are stereotyped as having vulgar, aggressive behaviour, and a lack of respect towards women," it said.

"The song references a Germanised version of the Arabic expression “taeal huna”, meaning “come here” but now commonly used in Germany to describe groups of young men with immigrant backgrounds, often with derogatory overtones," The Guardian report said.

How long is one song? Three minutes? Five minutes? For the discerning few among us who are into classical symphonies, a piece of music may go for longer than 10 minutes. But how about one that goes on for more than 600 years? Yes, this is a piece of music that's so long it will be playing even after generations. The unique experiment has now crossed a milestone. on Monday (Feb 5), the music composition changed chord for first time in two years.

The experimental music piece called As Slow As Possible started 'playing' in the year 2001 in a German church. The music has been composed by avant-garde composer John Cage. It being played on a specially designed organ and will not finish playing before year 2640. The organ is in Burchardi Church in Halberstadt town in Germany.

For a musical piece of that long a duration. It'll be played slow, like really really slow. So since 2001, it has changed chord only 16 times. This may happen in a usual song in matter of 30 seconds!.

The uniqueness of the experiment has made it famous across the world over years. So much so that just to witness the chord change, people booked tickets years in advance.

So for a piece of music This long, you'd need tonnes of paper for notations right?

Nope.

The musical piece fits just eight sheets of paper. It's just that, as the name suggests, it is being played super slow.

Last time the music changed chord was in 2022. The musical project says on its website that next change in chord will take place on August 5, 2026.
