Protests continued during the wee hours of Saturday as authorities began cutting down trees at Mumbai`s Aarey Colony for a metro car shed, merely hours after the Bombay High Court dismissed all petitions against the move.

"What is the hurry that they are cutting down trees in the middle of the night," one of the protestors said.

Protestors gathered at the spot asking why can`t the authorities wait until a petition can be filed in the Supreme Court regarding the matter.

"It is saddening to see that the trees which provide life to others are being cut. This is happening when the government itself is urging people to plant more trees," another protester, Albert Michel said.

The site also has heavy police deployment as hundreds of people have gathered in the area to stop trees from being hacked.

The Bombay High Court had, on Friday, dismissed all petitions against the proposed cutting down of over 2,500 trees in Aarey Colony of Mumbai to make way for a Metro car shed and refused to declare the colony as a forest.

Scores of locals including environmental activists have been opposing the cutting of trees for the construction of the car shed of the metro station.

They are demanding the relocation of the bus depot, which is a part of the Metro III project.

Mumbai: Agitation continues in Aarey as authorities cut down trees

Amid ongoing public protests against the cutting of trees at Aarey colony in Mumbai, Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar on Saturday backed the proposed metro shed in Aarey forest area and said that development and environment protection should be done together.

Drawing parallels between the development of Delhi metro and Mumbai metro he said, "The High Court has ruled that Aarey is not a forest. Metro came to Delhi now today it is the best metro across the world. How does it develop? When the first metro station was constructed, 20-25 trees were cut down. People then protested against it".

"But metro has planted 5 trees for every single tree that it has taken down. Now, there are 271 stations. Forest undercover area has increased in Delhi. 30 lakh people are using the metro as public transport. This is the mantra of development and protecting the environment. Both should go together," the BJP leader said.

Mumbai and Delhi ranked 37 and 41 respectively on the parameter of personal security, and 45 and 52 overall on a world's safest cities list that ranked 60 countries worldwide across five continents.

The list was topped by the Japanese capital Tokyo and included six cities of Asia-Pacific region in top 10.

As the world's cities continue to expand in size and number, striking a balance between connectivity, safety and privacy is vital for governments, the private sector and citizens alike.

A discussion in this regard between policymakers, business leader, and industry experts, was held recently at the Safe Cities Summit in Singapore.

Speaking on the occasion, Walter Lee, the Evangelist and Government Relations Leader in the Global Safety Division of the NEC Corporation, advocated that one of the key critical elements to making safer cities is to secure the digital identity of its citizens in both the cyber and physical space.

"The panel discussion was very exciting. We were talking about the long arm of the law or law enforcement agencies in creating, generating safer cities. And of course, the discussion was a fair mix of technology and other elements that would make a city safer," said Lee.

"So being a technologist, obviously we are looking at technology as a tool to make cities safer. And I was advocating the fact that one of the key critical elements to making safer cities is to secure digital identity for each one of us in both the cyber and physical space.

Discussions at the summit ranged from climate resilience, urban living, protecting against cyber attack, and police enforcement.

Tetsuro Akagi, the CEO of NEC Asia Pacific, said that his company strongly believes in contributing to the societies and communities across the Asia Pacific by improving upon technologies pertaining to networking, computing, and Artificial Intelligence."Many issues are going around public safety.

The weather forecasting agency has predicted that the region is likely to receive more rainfall in the next two 2-3 days with the temperature oscillating between 24 degree Celsius and 32 degree Celsius.

"September started on a good note for the city with instances of record rainfall multiple times. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Saturday temporarily suspended license of a SpiceJet pilot in connection with a runway incursion that occurred in the first week of August.

The license of pilot Atul Yadav has been revoked for three months from July 10, 2019 after probing his role in the runway incursion by Surat-Mumbai SEJ-2763 flight at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International (CSMI) airport.

The incident of the runway (RWY) incursion had occurred on July 5 this year.

Sharing details of the incident, DGCA said, "Yadav was monitoring both tower and ground frequencies while taxing. He had briefed pilot-in-command that they were cleared for crossing RWY 14. This RWY crossing clearance was given by tower to aircraft which was ahead of SEJ-2763. The action of the crew member jeopardised the safety of the aircraft and the passengers."

The aviation authority said that the show cause notice was issued to pilot on August 19 to explain in writing within 15 days as to "why the action should not be taken against him for endangering the safety of aircraft and passengers on board".

After receiving the reply, the crew has accepted his mistake and explained that it happened due to another aircraft with a similar call sign ahead of SEJ-2763, IGO 063 which got clearance to cross runway 14.

"Therefore, in the exercise of the powers delegated under Clause (a) of Sub-Rule (3) of Rule 19 of the Aircraft Rules, 1937, read with the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation notification No. S.O. 727 (E) of October 1994 the undersigned hereby suspends in public interest, the privileges of the pilot license held by Yadav, CPL- 13633 for a period of three months from 10.07.2019," it said.

Indian budget airline SpiceJet Ltd on Friday posted its biggest-ever quarterly profit, as it flew more passengers and raised fares in the wake of the collapse of Jet Airways.

Domestic air traffic growth has been slowing in recent months in a flagging economy, but the downfall of Jet Airways, once the country's largest private carrier, this year has helped SpiceJet and market leader IndiGo attract more customers, raise fares and add routes.

Shares in SpiceJet and InterGlobe Aviation-owned IndiGo have soared 55% and 31% respectively this year, as the companies raced to fill in prime airport slots vacated by Jet.

SpiceJet's shares were up 1.3% at 137.75 rupees, in a Mumbai market that was 0.7% higher as of 0908 GMT.

SpiceJet said passenger fares rose 11% during the three months to June, a quarter in which it cancelled some flights due to the grounding of Boeing 737 MAX after the deadly crash of an Ethiopian Airlines plane in March.

India's No.2 airline by market share said operations remained "stressed" for much of the quarter due to the grounding, causing disruption to passengers' travel plans and an increase in fixed costs related to the narrow-body aircraft.

"The results would have been vastly better but for the painful grounding of the MAX aircraft," Chairman and Managing Director Ajay Singh said in a statement.

SpiceJet had estimated that the grounded planes would resume flying by July or August, but there was still uncertainty around the specific timing, it said, adding that it would induct 5-10 Boeing 737 NG planes and three Bombardier Q400 aircraft in October.

SpiceJet added 32 aircraft between April and June. Jet began grounding its planes at the start of the year and was eventually forced to stop operations in April.

SpiceJet's standalone net profit, excluding earnings of non-core units, was 2.62 billion rupees ($37.1 million) in the three months to June, compared with a loss of 380.6 million rupees a year earlier.
