Former Malaysian prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin was on Friday charged with multiple counts of corruption and money laundering, making him the second leader in the country’s history to be indicted after leaving office.

A Kuala Lumpur court is hearing the matter related to an economic recovery project launched by his government, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said, according to Reuters news agency.

He was briefly arrested on Thursday before being released on bail.

It comes only three months after Muhyiddin lost a closely fought general election to Anwar Ibrahim. Local media reports claimed that the charges are likely to increase political tensions in Malaysia, which has seen four prime ministers since 2018.

Muhyiddin has denied accusations of wrongdoing and described them as political vendetta. He claimed that the charges were to embarrass him and cripple his Islamist-dominated alliance, which has strong support among ethnic Malays who account for about two-thirds of Malaysia's 33 million people.

On Friday, while speaking to reporters, Muhyiddin said he would face seven charges.

"I stress that I am not guilty and I will face all charges against me in court... This action is political persecution because they fear the strength of Perikatan Nasional," Muhyiddin was quoted as saying by Reuters.

If the 72-year-old is found guilty, he could face up to 20 years in prison for each of the corruption charges, 15 years each for money laundering and fines.

After coming to power in November, incumbent PM Anwar Ibrahim launched a probe of the government projects approved by past administrations including Muhyiddin, who helmed the post from March 2020 until August 2021.

Recently, two senior members from Muhyiddin's Bersatu party were charged with corruption. The anti-graft agency has also frozen Bersatu's party accounts.

Malaysia has had three prime ministers in less than four years and the latest electoral stalemate is expected to further prolong the political instability in Kuala Lumpur.

The king had given political parties until 2:00 PM&nbsp;(0600 GMT) on Tuesday to put together alliances needed for a majority. But the candidates failed to do so after the incumbent Barisan Nasional coalition refused to align with either.

Making a last-ditch effort to hold on to power, on Friday he offered institutional reforms in exchange for support from the opposition. However, the offer was rejected.

Minister Mohamad Redzuan Yusof&nbsp;told AFP that Muhyiddin informed his party's lawmakers about&nbsp;his resignation at a meeting Sunday in Kuala Lumpur.&nbsp;It would be up to King Mohammed to accept&nbsp; Muhyiddin's&nbsp;resignation or not, he said at the meeting.&nbsp;

The prime minister will convene a final cabinet meeting on Monday; he will then present his resignation letter at the palace.

"We did try to convince him to stay on, but he said: 'We do not have the number of MPs.'

Malaysia's embattled leader defended his actions Thursday as he faced calls to quit after rare criticism from the king, who accused his government of misleading parliament over coronavirus laws.

Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin leads a scandal-plagued coalition that seized power last year without an election,&nbsp;but his government is on the verge of collapse after allies withdrew support.

Muhyiddin's government said earlier this week that on July 21 it had revoked all ordinances that had come into effect since a national state of emergency was imposed in January.

King Al-Sultan Abdullah imposed the emergency on the advice of Muhyiddin, who had said it was needed to curb the spread of COVID-19.

However, critics have slammed the move and accused the premier of trying to cling to power amid a slim majority.

In a statement on Thursday, the palace said the revocation of the ordinances was done without the king's consent and thus ran counter to the federal constitution and the principles of law.

Muhyiddin's office said his government had acted in accordance with the law and the&nbsp;Malaysian constitution.

The move comes after over a year of political upset in the Southeast Asian country following the unexpected exit of former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad in February 2020 amid infighting in his governing coalition.

Muhyiddin has governed with a razor-thin majority and led an unstable ruling coalition since coming to power in March 2020.

Malaysia&nbsp;is a constitutional monarchy in which the king has a largely ceremonial role, carrying out his duties on advice from the prime minister and cabinet.

Some analysts say the monarch has discretion over whether an emergency should be declared, however. Consent from the king, much revered across&nbsp;Malaysia's multi-ethnic population, is also needed to name a prime minister.

The UMNO party, the biggest bloc in the ruling alliance, called on Muhyiddin to resign for disobeying the king's decree to debate the emergency ordinances in parliament and revoking them without his consent.

UMNO president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Muhyiddin's actions were a "clear act of treason towards the King".

Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim said he had filed a motion of no confidence against Muhyiddin, and claimed a majority of lawmakers no longer supported the prime minister.

Deputy Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the government had the support of 110 of&nbsp;Malaysia's 222 parliamentarians.

"We have formed this government and I want Tun to endorse this government, that it is a government for the people," Muhyiddin, referring to Mahathir by his title, told a news conference.

The palace said it went beyond its "call of obligation" by meeting all lawmakers and the leaders of various political parties before the king arrived at his decision that Muhyiddin was the person likely to command a majority in parliament.

"It was only after this rigorous and open process of consultation, fully in accordance with the Federal Constitution, that His Majesty exercised his discretion under the Federal Constitution to appoint a new Prime Minister," the palace, Istana Negara, said in a statement.

"Hence, by no means can this process be regarded as a “royal coup” as questionably asserted by the Guardian..."

Malaysia's king on Saturday named Muhyiddin, 72, as being the most likely candidate to be able to command a majority in parliament&nbsp;after&nbsp;days of political twists and turns.

Mahathir, 94, disputed the decision saying he instead had the numbers in the 222-member parliament. Mahathir, however, said he had not been able to convey to the palace that he had the majority.

In his first address to the nation, Muhyiddin defended himself.

"I know there are those who are angry with me. As expected, there are those who branded me a traitor. Listen well, I am no traitor," he said on Monday.

Mahathir resigned because he had been angered by pressure from supporters of old rival Anwar Ibrahim, 72, to set a timeline to hand power to him as part of a deal reached to fight the last general election together two years ago.

In the end, both Mahathir and Anwar got sidelined by their former coalition partner Muhyiddin, who moved quickly to seek support from people the other two would not work with.

WHAT COULD HAPPEN NEXT?

Muhyiddin's opponents have called for parliament to reconvene on March 9 as originally scheduled so that his majority claim can be tested.

That, however, will likely not happen, his supporters said, because the&nbsp;new&nbsp;premier needs time to first appoint ministers and focus on reviving the economy that grew at its slowest pace in the fourth quarter.

"By convention, you need a cabinet, and then they need some time to adjust themselves to understand their ministries," said Wee Ka Siong, a lawmaker from the&nbsp;new&nbsp;ruling coalition. "Then only can they answer questions."

The last parliament session ended on Dec. 5, and according to the constitution, the first day of the&nbsp;new&nbsp;session must be held within six months of that, which in this case would be by June 5.

Mahathir said a delay in reconvening parliament may give "these very rich and powerful people" in the&nbsp;new&nbsp;ruling coalition time to try and secure a majority.

WHAT WILL CHANGE?

The return to power of parties that lost the last election may mean a renewed focus on the country's decades-old positive discrimination policy for majority Malays, who enjoyed preferential access to everything from public financing to a 30% quota for equity holdings in businesses.

Unlike Mahathir's multi-ethnic government, the&nbsp;new&nbsp;administration may also be willing to put more Malays back into key positions and veer towards religious conservatism in the largely Muslim country.
