Elon Musk and Sundar Pichai congratulate India's D Gukesh after historic win

The Maha Kumbh 2025 a "mahayagya of unity" which would take the country's cultural and spiritual identity to new heights, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Friday, emphasising the event's role in promoting social cohesion as well as economic empowerment of communities.

Addressing a public meeting here after inaugurating developmental projects to improve the city's infrastructure and provide better amenities to pilgrims during the Kumbh Mela, the prime minister said the differences of castes and sects disappear at the event.

The prime minister inaugurated 167 key development projects worth Rs 5,500 crore. The projects also included Sah'AI'yak Chatbot -- an Artificial Intelligence-based platform to streamline communication for devotees attending the Maha Kumbh.

Modi said the city of Prayagraj, which hosts the Maha Kumbh every 12 years, is not just a geographical location, but a place for spiritual experience where the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers plays a pivotal role in uniting people from all walks of life.

"The Maha Kumbh is a mahayagya of unity," Modi said. "It will take the country's cultural and spiritual identity to new heights."

"In the last Kumbh, I had the good fortune of taking a bath at the Sangam and today, once again, I received blessings at the feet of Ganga," Modi said.

The 2025 Maha Kumbh will be held from January 13 (Paush Poornima) to February 26 (Maha Shivratri) at Prayagraj. It will be the world's largest religious gathering and more than 40 crore people are expected during the 45-day event.

The prime minister emphasised the historical importance of the event, saying saints and sages have, for centuries, used it as a platform to discuss national issues and provide valuable guidance.
He pointed out that even in ancient times, the Kumbh laid the foundation for social change. Modi also spoke about the current government's efforts to improve Kumbh-related infrastructure which, he said, had been neglected in the past.

"During previous governments, the importance of Kumbh was not recognised. The devotees kept facing problems at such events, but the governments of the day did not care. The reason for this was their disassociation from Indian culture," said the PM.

"But today but there is a government at the Centre as well as in the state which respect faith and Indian culture." The prime minister highlighted the development of various cultural circuits like the Ramayana, Krishna, and Buddhist circuits, and said they were previously underappreciated.

In his address, the PM acknowledged the contribution of sanitation workers, saying they play a key role in their successful conduct by ensuring cleanliness at such large-scale events.

"More than 15,000 sanitation workers will ensure cleanliness during the 2025 Kumbh," he said, expressing his gratitude towards them.

The prime minister recalled his personal experience of washing the feet of sanitation workers in 2019, which he described as a memorable moment of his life.

Modi also stressed Maha Kumbh's potential in empowering communities economically. "Kumbh not only gives social strength but also provides economic empowerment of the people," Modi said.

Earlier, the prime minister arrived in the city around 12.30 pm and began the visit with ceremonial puja and darshan at the holy Sangam Nose -- the point of confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and the Saraswati rivers.

He undertook a river cruise before the puja. Wearing a white kurta-pajama, blue jacket and sporting a maroon shawl, Modi arrived at the Sangam Nose on the Nishadraj Cruise, boarding it via the floating jetty at Kila Ghat.

He was received at the confluence point by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Governor Anandiben Patel. The prime minister also interacted with saints and greeted them with respect.

A saint presented him with a pearl garland as a token of blessings, the Uttar Pradesh government said in a statement.

It said Modi performed the 'aarti' of the Triveni (Sangam Nose), praying for global welfare and harmony. PM Modi also sought the blessings of prominent saints.

Amid the chanting of Vedic mantras, the prime minister performed rituals including 'Jalabhishek' and 'Dudhbhishek' at the Triveni. Following this, he performed the Sangam Aarti.

Modi then offered worship at the Akshay Vata Vriksha before visiting the Hanuman Mandir and the Saraswati Koop. He also visited the Maha Kumbh exhibition site and was briefed by officials.

In a fresh effort to corner the BJP-led government over the Adani controversy, opposition MPs staged a dramatic protest in the Parliament on Monday. Led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, they took a creative approach, performing a mock 'interview' to highlight their accusations of a close relationship between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and billionaire Gautam Adani.

During the protest, two opposition MPs wore masks of Prime Minister Modi and Adani, while Rahul Gandhi played the role of an interviewer. Gandhi asked pointed questions about the duo's alleged relationship. The MPs responded with humour, saying, "We do everything together. We have had a relationship for years."

The mock interview escalated when Gandhi asked why Parliament was not functioning properly due to disruptions, with the MPs impersonating Adani and Modi suggesting that key government figures, including Home Minister Amit Shah, were missing from the session.

The protest is part of a wider push from the opposition to secure a parliamentary debate on the bribery charges levelled against the Adani Group in the US. Since the start of the Winter Session on November 20, Parliament has seen frequent washouts, with opposition parties accusing the government of blocking a discussion on the issue.

In a Facebook post earlier, Rahul Gandhi called on Prime Minister Modi to engage with the ongoing debate in Parliament. He urged, "Modi ji, come to Parliament, don’t fear an inquiry into Adani." Gandhi’s statement reflects the ongoing frustration within the opposition.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused the US State Department is trying to "destabilise India", adding that the US "deep state" elements are "targeting PM Modi".

Sambit Patra, the spokesperson of the ruling BJP, said that the US deep state has been involved with a group of journalists and with the opposition leader Rahul Gandhi to pull down India's growth story with unsubstantiated allegations and malicious reports without a "shred of evidence".

He further stressed that all of this is in conjunction with the US State Department.

During a press conference, he said, "It has always been the US State Department behind this agenda."

Patra also said that the opposition Congress has used the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP)'s articles that "singularly focused" on the Adani group and its alleged proximity with the Indian government to undermine PM Modi.

Last month, Gautam Adani, the group's chairman, and seven others were indicted in the United States for being part of a $265 billion scheme to bribe Indian officials.

The OCCRP's articles have further accused state-sponsored hackers in India of using Israeli-made Pegasus spyware to target government critics.

Russian President Vladimir Putin heaped praises on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi stating that the country's "India-First" policy and the "Make in India" initiative are the key catalysts for New Delhi's economic growth and global positioning.

He also praised the Indian government for fostering "stable conditions" for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Putin specifically commended Modi's economic initiatives, with a particular emphasis on the "Make in India" program, which has been instrumental in promoting entrepreneurship.

Drawing parallels between Russia's import substitution program and New Delhi's "Make in India" initiative, Putin said that Moscow was willing to establish manufacturing operations in India.

PM Modi meets with leaders of Brazil, Chile and Argentina at G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro

The 2024 India Art Festival held at the Constitution Club of India, New Delhi, from November 14 to17 was a heaven for art enthusiasts. This vibrant celebration of contemporary Indian art, which began in 2008 under the Indian Contemporary Art Journal, has evolved from its initial mission of supporting rural and semi-urban artists into a nationwide cultural phenomenon reaching major cities like Delhi, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad.

Addressing art infrastructure gap

The festival emerged as a response to India's limited platforms for its more than 200,000 artists. Its innovative dual-pattern exhibition model, launched in Mumbai, creates space for both galleries and independent artists, making art presentations accessible, easier, and communicable, both for creators and art collectors.

Art themes

The 2024 lineup maintained various styles and themes, such as landscapes as seen in the works of Bela Kumari, Rahul Naskar, and Varun Singh; abstract art pieces by Alka Pandey, Anindita Kishore, and Cheena Madan; human relationships explored by Amita Singhal, Anjali Prabhakar, and Jasmine Rizvi. Besides, a variety of spiritual art themes are portrayed by Abhishek Aacharya, Pratima Abhange, and Arshhia Chawla.

There were paintings that followed the theme of realism, like the ones featured by Shyam Verma, Pankan Bawdekar, Om Thadkar, and others. The gallery also had sculptures by artists like Akshay Jadhav and Debjyoti Purakayastha.

What stood out?

Exploring various themes, realist paintings seemed a world apart from the rest. They had an old-school touch, simple yet powerful, as seen in Shyam Verma’s paintings. All his paintings depicted happiness where even the most ordinary person looked powerful, central to the art and their gaze held a certain intensity.

On being asked, what is the central idea of his paintings, he said, “Not everything needs to show sadness. Painting is an expression, and one must always find positivity towards things.” He added, “When this piece (pointing out to one of his paintings) hangs in someone’s living room, it should create a positive environment”.

As an amateur art admirer, I noticed the subjects in all his paintings had a bold look in their eyes. Talking about their gaze, he revealed, “The eyes alone capture the most expressions.” He said even if something may not be seen on a person’s face, it is in their eyes. So, eyes are a very important feature of any painting, especially if it is realist.

Addressing art infrastructure gap The festival emerged as a response to India's limited platforms for its more than 200,000 artists. Its innovative dual-pattern exhibition model, launched in Mumbai, creates space for both galleries and independent artists, making art presentations accessible, easier, and communicable, both for creators and art collectors. Art themes The 2024 lineup maintained various styles and themes, such as landscapes as seen in the works of Bela Kumari, Rahul Naskar, and Varun Singh; abstract art pieces by Alka Pandey, Anindita Kishore, and Cheena Madan; human relationships explored by Amita Singhal, Anjali Prabhakar, and Jasmine Rizvi. Shree Shyam Verma from Lucknow is a self-taught painter who loves working on portraits.
