Players to watch out for in Australia vs Pakistan clash at World Cup

Key battles in India vs Australia Cricket World Cup clash

The credit for Australia's 15-run victory against West Indies, during their World Cup clash on Thursday, goes to pacer Mitchell Starc's record-breaking performance as he became the fastest bowler to reach the 150-wicket mark.

Starc achieved this milestone in his 77th ODI match, one match quicker than Pakistan's Saqlain Mushtaq.

He displayed an impeccable performance during the match as he clinched five wickets in the match to touch the 150-wicket milestone.

"I felt really good today (Thursday). Rhythm is starting to feel really good, and the things I've been working on the last few months are really coming to fruition, so that's a huge positive for me," Cricket.com.au quoted Starc as saying.

Interestingly, Starc, in his last two overs, conceded just two runs.

Talking on the same, Starc said he enjoys bowling death overs.

"It's something I enjoy doing, bowling at the death. Having that experience of four years ago (at the 2015 World Cup) probably helps play a part, but we've got guys that can bowl throughout an innings and bowl at the death," Starc said.

However, Starc was not the only one who broke a record, Nathan Coulter-Nile also got a record to his name after he smashed 92 runs, the highest ever score by an Australian batting at no 8 or lower in an ODI.

World Cup: Record-breaking Mitchell Starc becomes fastest to reach 150 ODI wickets

Nathan Coulter-Nile's record-breaking innings laid the platform for Australia's 15-run victory over the West Indies on Thursday as the World Cup holders bounced back from a top-order collapse to make it two successive wins.

Australia were in dire straits at 38 for four after the West Indies fast bowlers proved too hot to handle early on at Trent Bridge.

But Coulter-Nile's career-best 92 -- the highest score by any number eight batsman or lower in a World Cup -- helped take them to 288 all out.

He carried on a recovery started by former skipper Steve Smith (73), with the pair bailing Australia out in a stand of 102 in 89 balls.

West Indies, despite a painstaking 68 from opener Shai Hope and 51 from captain Jason Holder finished on 273 for nine.

Fast bowler Mitchell Starc did the bulk of the damage with five for 46 -- the first five-wicket haul of this World Cup -- including a late burst of four for two in 11 balls -- as Australia followed up their seven-wicket win over minnows Afghanistan.

The West Indies had bounced out Pakistan for just 105 when winning their tournament opener at Trent Bridge last week and adopted similar tactics against Australia after Holder won the toss.

Oshane Thomas had Australia captain Aaron Finch (six) caught before opening partner David Warner (three) was held at backward point off Sheldon Cottrell -- a wicket that saw the left-arm quick, still a member of the Jamaica Defence Force, celebrate with his trademark salute.

Australia were now 26 for two, with boos ringing out as Warner walked off and Smith walked on -- a now familiar response by crowds in England to the pair having only recently returned from year-long bans for their roles in a ball-tampering scandal in South Africa.

Coulter-Nile cashes in

Smith had a lucky break on 26 when he top-edged a hook off Holder only for Cottrell at long leg to slip as he eyed a catch.

His patient innings ended when he flicked Thomas high towards deep backward square only for Cottrell, skirting the boundary, to grab the ball one-handed, throw it back into the field of play as he stepped over the rope -- thereby avoiding a six -- and complete a sensational catch.

But Coulter-Nile cashed in as he surpassed his previous international best of 34.

His blistering assault off 60 balls featuring eight fours and four sixes also saw him beat former Zimbabwe international Heath Streak's previous World Cup best by a No 8 of 72 before, in sight of a hundred, he drove Carlos Brathwaite to Holder at long-off.

In the West Indies' run-chase, big-hitting opener Chris Gayle, having overturned two 'out' decisions, was eventually lbw to Starc for 21.

But Hope, biding his time, completed a 76-ball fifty.

Holder who overturned decisions against him on seven and 22, upped the tempo with several well-struck boundaries.

West Indies, however, suffered a huge setback when Hope chipped a Pat Cummins slower ball to mid-on.

Russell then got off the mark with a huge straight six off leg-spinner Adam Zampa that took the West Indies to 200 before he was well caught over the shoulder by Glenn Maxwell.

But as long as Holder was there the West Indies still had a chance.

He completed a run-a-ball fifty but trying to take on Starc, rather than wait to attack Australia's lesser bowlers, he was caught at short fine leg as the West Indies' hopes faded.

Besides Bumrah, Lee picked compatriots Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummings as the other two fast bowlers who will do well at the quadrennial tournament.

"You'd have to stick with Mitchell Starc," Lee told cricket.Com.Au.

Starc, a left-armer, had suffered a chest injury last February and is nearing peak fitness.

"He's still got that quality. When that pace is up he's hard to go past," Lee said of Starc, who was the 2015 Player of the Tournament for his 22 wickets at 10 runs apiece.

Heaping praise on Cummins, Lee said, "Pat Cummins - pace, accuracy, variations. He can do it all."

Australian pacer Mitchell Starc said that the team has moved on from a ball-tampering scandal that rocked the cricket fraternity and now focused on the upcoming cricket World Cup which will kick off from May 30.

Former Australian captain Steve Smith and vice-captain David Warner were found guilty of altering the condition of the ball in 2018 playing against South Africa.

Smith and Warner, who served a year-long ban, now have joined their teammates as they gathered for a pre-World Cup training camp.

"It is onwards, upwards and focused on the World Cup. It is all rosy," ICC quoted Starc, as saying.

The duo had missed Australia's recent away series against Pakistan in UAE but both the cricketers were welcomed into the Australia dressing room to know how things have changed under Aaron Finch's leadership and coach Justin Langer.

"We have all had our meetings and moved on. The meeting I was involved in with ... 95 per cent was not about Dave and Steve and the group. It was more about where the team was going," Starc said.

Both Smith and Warner will go into the 50-over tournament in England with their brilliant performance in the Indian Premier League 2019.

"He (Warner) has been on fire over there, along with Steve, so that is great for him and great for the group. He is a world-class player and we are excited to have him back," Starc said.

Injury troubles have kept James Pattinson out of the Australian test side for three years but the fast bowler issued a timely reminder to selectors ahead of the Ashes as he guided Victoria to their fourth Sheffield Shield title in five years on Sunday.

Having grabbed three wickets in the first innings against Queensland, the Melbourne man tore through the top order in a devastating spell, his match haul of 7-71 leaving him with 26 wickets at an average of 18.92 for the competition.

With first-choice quicks Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood battling injuries, 28-year-old Pattinson will look to continue his revival when he heads to England to play for Nottinghamshire in the county championship.

Once seen as a potential 100-test player, Pattinson returned to first class cricket for the first time in 15 months in November having undergone major back surgery.

The paceman played the last of his 17 tests away to New Zealand in February 2016 but has remained patient and determined through a number of injury setbacks.

"It's been a journey to get to this position over the last few years and at times I thought I would never be back," said Pattinson, who has suffered a litany of back problems and soft tissue injuries through his stop-start career.

"I never doubted my ability when I could get back and bowl.

"All the hard work, all the doubts that creep in to your mind, these are times that make it worth it."

Selector Trevor Hohns was at Melbourne's Junction Oval to watch the Shield final and would have likely been impressed by the performance of the once-menacing Pattinson, who has 70 test wickets at an average of 26.15.

"We'd love to see him (with Victoria) for every game but I think he deserves to be with the big boys as opposed to playing with us," said Victoria captain Travis Dean.

Test cricket would be a big step up from the loads bowled in Shield cricket, and Pattinson will have to get through the county season unscathed to be considered for the Ashes starting in August.

"They have never really had an issue with the way I bowl, it's just about staying on the park," Pattinson said of the national selectors.

"I need to get through a few more games ... The test will come once I start bowling more. I have spoken to the selectors in recent times about the Ashes and that's my goal."

Forgotten man James Pattinson stakes Ashes claim

Pace spearhead Mitchell Starc was on Thursday was ruled out of Australia's Twenty20 and one-day tour of India with a "substantial" muscle tear, joining fellow quick bowler Josh Hazlewood on the sidelines.

Australia play two T20s and five ODIs against the Indians from later this month as part of an important build-up to their World Cup title defence in England this year.

But they will be doing so with a depleted attack.

Starc, man-of-the-match after collecting 10 wickets in the second Test against Sri Lanka in Canberra this week, will miss the series.

Hazlewood remains sidelined as he recovers from a back injury picked up in Australia's Test series loss to India.

"Unfortunately, scans have revealed that Mitchell Starc sustained a substantial tear to his left pec muscle while bowling on the final day of the Test match in Canberra," said national selector Trevor Hohns.

"This means he will be unavailable for the tour of India, but we will instead target a return to play for the ODI series against Pakistan in the UAE in March."

Eleven of the 14 players that took on Virat Kohli's men in a recent one-day series loss in Australia have been retained.

But veteran seamer Peter Siddle, fast bowler Billy Stanlake and allrounder Marsh were dropped, which has opened the door for pacemen Kane Richardson and Nathan Coulter-Nile, and hard-hitting batsman Ashton Turner.

"Kane has been in outstanding form over the summer, including his recent performances in the Big Bash League," said Hohns.

"Kane not only has experience playing ODI cricket for Australia, but he's also performed well for his country when given the opportunity.

"Nathan Coulter-Nile provides us with another quality bowling option," he added.

"He brings good energy in the field and can also score runs in high-pressure situations."

Hohns added that Western Australia's Turner had been on his radar for some time and he now "has an opportunity to put his case forward ahead of the World Cup".

With Hazlewood out, Pat Cummins was named co-vice captain alongside Alex Carey. Aaron Finch remains skipper.

Opener D'Arcy Short was included as cover for Shaun Marsh as he recovers from a hamstring injury. Short is expected to play in the two T20s with Marsh joining the squad following the birth of his second child.

"With the World Cup on the horizon, we see the ODI tours of India and the following tour against Pakistan as important windows for the squad to continue their preparations for our title defence," said Hohns.

"We were really pleased with the progress we made during the recent ODI series against India, and we feel the progress is reflected in the squad selection, with only a couple of changes."

The squad for the Pakistan series, that immediately follows India, will be named later with the possibility that Steve Smith and David Warner may be considered for the latter part once their bans for ball-tampering expire on March 29.

Mitchell Starc ruled out in ODI, T20 tour to India

Give Mitchell Starc 'space not pressure' to work things out, says Virat Kohli

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting Sunday slammed the current team for showing "no desperation" after Nathan Lyon decided against reviewing his lbw decision on day four of the fourth Test against India here.

Lyon was adjudged LBW after being hit on the pad off a Kuldeep Yadav delivery. He asked non-striker Mitchell Starc if he should opt for a review, but the duo decided against it despite two reviews remaining in their innings and only two wickets left.

At stumps on day four, Australia were bundled out for 300 in the first innings after which India enforced the follow-on. The hosts then came out to bat in the second innings, trailing by 322 runs.

India had piled up a mammoth 622 in their first innings.

"That dismissal actually says a lot to me about the mindset of this Australian team at the moment. There's no desperation there whatsoever," Ponting said on Channel Seven, one of the host broadcasters.

"Why wouldn't they have had a look at that? They've still got the two reviews up their sleeve. There had to be some sort of doubt in that," Ponting added.

The former three-time World Cup winning cricketer also slammed pacer Starc, who was at the non-stricker's end, for not intervening.

"Given out straight away and Mitchell Starc just puts his hand out and says 'oh well, it's not me, it's up to you to make (a call)".

"Well, unfortunately, when you're out there together it's a partnership. You've got to do whatever you can to try and save your mate. And there was absolutely none of that there," he added.

Replays suggested the ball would have probably struck Lyon outside the line of off stump and he may have been adjudged not out if DRS was taken.

"And as it's shown already that would have been given not out. Slack and not desperate enough. You can see where Mitchell Starc is standing at the non-striker's end," he added.

"One, look how wide he's standing. There's no need to be that wide in the first place. Nathan Lyon looks up, 'Oh what do you reckon?' 'Oh I don't know mate. Yeah I don't know. But let's not bother looking. We've only got two (reviews) up our sleeve," Ponting said.

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting Sunday slammed the current team for showing "no desperation" after Nathan Lyon decided against reviewing his lbw decision on day four of the fourth Test against India here.

Ricky Ponting lashes out at Australia for showing 'no desperation'

Australia is set to rest its fast-bowling trio of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood for the first three ODIs against India in a bid to manage their workload ahead of a busy international calendar.

Cummins has been Australia's top performer with both the ball and the bat in the just-concluded Boxing Day Test in Melbourne and coach Justin Langer insisted that it's a great selection "conundrum" for the hosts for the ODI series which begins in Sydney on January 12.

Langer said Australia need to keep its players fit and fresh ahead of busy 2019, which includes a World Cup and an Ashes tour and hinted that Cummins, Starc and Hazlewood may be rested in the ODI series against India ahead of the two Tests against Sri Lanka.

"It's the great conundrum for us, really, how we manage our bowlers. For example, we might not play them in the next three one-dayers so they're ready for the next two (Tests) to keep them fresh," Langer was quoted as saying by 'The Sydney Morning Herald'.

"He (Cummins) has been brilliant, he's been outstanding but then - as soon as we do that they want to play and also then everyone else would be on our back saying: 'Why aren't they playing every single game?' But if you play every game - we've also got a World Cup and Ashes next year - we want him fresh for those things."

Cummins, who has been Australia's best fast bowler in the first three Tests against India with 14 wickets at an average of 20.07, had earlier missed the ODI series in England and the two Tests against Pakistan in the UAE owing to injuries.

The lanky pacer is one of several Australian cricketers, who will not feature in the 2019 IPL because of a packed international calendar.

"You look at every year on an individual basis and the player as well. There might be times when it's a really good thing for them to be playing IPL. But there's so much cricket now. The players individually - and us as management - have to make sure we get the balance right so everyone is happy and playing cricket," Langer said.

"So getting that management right and staying true to the management, so we can have him (Cummins) fit and firing - we've got to be strong with that because there's got to be a lot of people with different opinions as to whether they should play every game," he said.

"But we know it's really hard to play all year around because they need to keep their bodies as fresh and strong (as possible) and then be bowling at the level we want them to be at. It's a real balancing act as well."

The Australian bowlers failed to create any chance to take a wicket in the first session but are expected to make a strong comeback in the next session.

On Day 1, India held the whip-hand at 215 for two at the close of a grinding opening day where Pujara raised his 21st Test half-century.

Electing to bat, Indian opener Mayank Agarwal enjoyed a stellar entry to Test cricket, scoring 76 to record the highest ever innings by an India debutant on Australian soil before being dismissed on the last ball before tea.

He smashed a drive for six over deep cover off Australia's first-change bowler and another square drive for four in the same over.

The recalled Vijay was never quite so settled, however, and he was out for 18 chasing a wider delivery that was caught by Peter Handscomb at second slip.

Pujara, who scored a sparkling 123 to rescue India in their first innings total of 250, was given out after an appeal for caught behind off Lyon but over-turned the decision on review.

"We're hanging in there, India bowled exceptionally well and put us under pressure.

"Fantastic little fight-back at the end there and sets up a really important first hour in the morning. If we can get close it's game on."

Tim Paine's side resumed on 117 for four after tea, with Peter Handscomb and Head tasked with salvaging the innings after spinner Ravichandran Ashwin tore through the top order with three wickets.

Handscomb promptly threw away his wicket for 34 trying to fend Jasprit Bumrah to third man with an angled bat, a thick edge pouched by Rishabh Pant.

Australia star pacer Mitchell Starc summoned for India T20

Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc will not be a part of cash-rich tournament Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019, after he was released by franchise Kolkata via a text message.

Starc, who was picked by Bollywood actor SRK owned team for a whopping Rs 9.4 crore, missed the 2018 edition due to a right leg injury which he sustained during the infamous Test series against South Africa.

"I got a text message two days ago from the owners of Kolkata saying I've been released from my contract," Starc was quoted as saying to a Sports website.

"At the moment I'll be home in April. I obviously didn't go last year with my tibia injury and it was a great opportunity to freshen the body up, let everything heal by itself."

"I guess barring a little niggle in my hammy I've felt pretty good with my body and my strength and the rest of it. That little period of time has really paid off for the body. If I don't play the IPL next year it's a good opportunity to freshen up for a massive six months of cricket in the UK."

Meanwhile, Cricket Australia is expected to limit how much its players will feature in the IPL, with the World Cup a major focus.

IPL 2019: Kolkata end Australian pacer Mitchell Starc's contract via text message

Australia captain Aaron Finch said relieving pace spearhead Mitchell Starc of new ball duties in the opening one-day international against South Africa was an attempt to snap his team's horror run of losses, albeit one that had backfired.

Eyebrows were raised when Nathan Coulter-Nile opened the bowling with Josh Hazlewood in Sunday's series-opener in Perth, breaking Starc's three-year streak of opening the bowling in internationals.

The ploy was quickly shelved when Coulter-Nile was hammered for 16 runs in his first over, and South Africa's batsmen easily mowed down the hosts' paltry 152 to win by six wickets.

"We'd planned to go in with Coults (Coulter-Nile) and Josh (Hazlewood) with the new ball," Finch said after Australia lost by six wickets.

"It didn't work out for Coults in the first over today, then we went to Starcy pretty quick.

"It's just a tactical thing to be honest. Sixteen out of 18 losses in a row, 17 out of 19 now, we're looking for something to try, to try some new things, something different.

"If you keep doing the same thing over and over it's the definition of insanity, isn't it?"

The bowlers were hardly to blame for Australia's humiliation in their first match of the home summer, having been set a thankless task to defend 152 by the batsmen at the new Perth stadium.

With former captain Steve Smith and vice captain David Warner still serving ball-tampering bans, Australia were given another harsh reminder of their threadbare batting stocks, with their top six combining for 65 runs.

The loss came less than a week after a scathing cultural review into governing body Cricket Australia which forced chairman David Peever resign amid fierce reaction.

Finch, who replaced Tim Paine as skipper after the wicketkeeper led Australia to a 5-0 whitewash defeat away to England, said confidence was low but said they could turn it around in time for their World Cup defence in England in seven months.

"When guys are not performing as well as they can do, there’s always going to be a bit of doubt," he said.

"But you're only one good shot away from feeling on top of the world again. I think it’s about understanding it’s not all doom and gloom."

Aaron Finch, says off-field ructions causing 'doubts'

Australia pace spearhead Mitchell Starc is battling a hamstring strain and may not bowl again in the second test against Pakistan or in the upcoming Twenty20 series.

The left-armer did not bowl in the final session of day two at Abu Dhabi on Wednesday and spent time off the ground as Pakistan built a commanding 281-run lead in their second innings after skittling Australia for 145.

Australia will be keen to preserve their main strike weapon for the test series against India at home and may not risk him for the three Twenty20 matches against Pakistan starting next week.

"It's just a bit of management of Mitch," Australia opener Aaron Finch said. "Obviously the conditions are pretty hot, so trying to look after the fast bowler.

"As far as I know he is (okay). He bowled with enough pace today."

Paceman Peter Siddle has been added to the squad for the T20 series, Cricket Australia said.

With the first test drawn and Pakistan holding the whip-hand at 144 for two at stumps on day two, Australia head into day three needing quick wickets to keep their slim hopes of winning their first series in Asia since 2011 alive.

He bowled with enough pace today." Paceman Peter Siddle has been added to the squad for the T20 series, Cricket Australia said. With the first test drawn and Pakistan holding the whip-hand at 144 for two at stumps on day two, Australia head into day three needing quick wickets to keep their slim hopes of winning their first series in Asia since 2011 alive.

Australia pace spearhead Mitchell Starc under injury cloud

Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc has been ruled out of the 11th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) due to a stress fracture in his leg.

His absence will be a major blow to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), who are already reeling under pressure of having a weak bench strength.

The team is entering the XIth edition with only 19 players in its squad. &nbsp &nbsp

Starc was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for a whopping Rs 9.4 crores at the IPL Player Auction in Bengaluru in January this year.

The franchise will soon have to look up for a good option to replace the pacer.&nbsp

The injury has also kept Starc out of Australia's fourth and final Test against South Africa in Johannesburg today.&nbsp

Confirming the news, Cricket Australia (CA) took to their Twitter handle and wrote that the left-armer has sustained a tibial bone stress in his right leg and that he would now head home after the series for further injury investigation and assessment.

The 11th edition of the IPL will start from April 7.&nbsp

KKR are scheduled to play their opening match against Royal Challengers Bangalore on April 8.

Pakistan’s fast bowling factory keeps churning out talent that catches the world's eye instantly.

The latest to come out of Pakistan's pace factory is 17-year-old Shaheen Shah Afridi.

Shaheen Afridi was labelled as Pakistan's Mitchell Starc known for his searing yorkers.

In the ongoing U-19 World cup, the emerging Pakistan pacer razed Ireland for 97 runs by taking 6 for 15 in 8.5 overs.

The opponent had to answer to Afridi's swing ball.

Earlier, Shaheen’s dream debut was for Khan Research Laboratory against Rawalpindi, as he grabbed 8 for 39 in 15 overs in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, Pakistan’s premier domestic tournament.

He broke a 43-year old record, set by Nadeem Malik who had taken 8 for 58 for Lahore in 1973-74 on debut.

His skill of bowling round the stumps and the knowledge of using the angles at crease helped him to get spotted by Mushtaq Ahmed, the head coach at the Academy and the coach of Karachi Kings.

Ahmad asked Afridi to bowl at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore and he was so impressed that recommended Kumar Sangakkara to have a look at his bowling videos.

It eventually led Afridi to be signed for the Dhaka Dynamites in the Bangladesh Premier League without having played a first-class game.

The 6.5 feet tall, strapping fast bowler hails from Fata region in the North Western region of Pakistan, near the Khyber Pass on the Afghanistan border.

He is the brother of Riaz Afridi who played one Test for Pakistan against Sri Lanka in Karachi and has also featured in the "rebel" Indian Cricket League(ICL) before his action was called into question.

While most emerging fast bowlers from Pakistan idolise the great Wasim Akram, Afridi is quick to point out there can be no bigger idol in his life than his brother, Riaz, as it helped him convince his parents of taking cricket his full-time career option.

England won the toss and chose to bat against Australia in the fifth and final Ashes Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Thursday. After a rain delay and an early lunch, the play was started a bit late.

"It looks a good wicket, there is a bit of weather about but if we bat well enough in the first few sessions I expect the pitch to deteriorate and spin will come in the game later on," England captain Joe Root said.

Seamer Chris Woakes has been ruled out with a side strain, opening the way for young leg-spinner Mason Crane to make his debut for England.

"Mason is a very excited young man and we expect him to do really well in his first Test," Root said.

Australia captain Steve Smith said he was in two minds about what he would have done if he had won the toss. "I'm not too bothered and not too disappointed to lose the toss," Smith said.

"There's a bit of moisture in the wicket coupled with overhead conditions and the wicket is a pretty good one."

Cricket: England is bidding to break through in the final Ashes Test

Australian captain Steve Smith thinks England will struggle to get back into the Ashes series after losing in Adelaide to trail 2-0 heading into next week's third test in Perth.

Smith admitted to some nerves when the tourists mounted a comeback after he decided not to enforce the follow-on in the second test but said it would now be a long road back for England in the five-match series after a 120-run defeat.

"It`s always tough coming back from 2-0 down, particularly when you`re away from home," Smith said.

"You`re really only one or two bad sessions away from the series, really. That can really play on people`s minds when you`re behind.

"We have to be confident, we have to continue what we`re doing, doing the basics really well, getting big first innings runs is crucial as we`ve seen, and just backing up day in and day out."

Four reasons for Australian confidence were occupying row 13 of flight QF 740 from Adelaide to Sydney on Thursday with quicks Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins on one side of the aisle and off-spinner Nathan "Gazza" Lyon on the other.

Although suggestions that the bowling attack is the best to have ever donned baggy green caps are probably wide of the mark, they have done their job by dismissing England twice in both the first two tests.

"I think the exciting thing is our bowling group can only get better," Starc told reporters on arrival at Sydney airport.

"Obviously we`ve taken 40 wickets over the last couple of weeks and done some really good things but there`s still room for improvement."

Starc took 5-88 after mopping up the England tail with the new pink ball on Wednesday, while Hazlewood snuffed out hopes of an England win with two wickets, including that of captain Joe root, in the first three overs of the day.

Cummins crucially pegged the English back with the wicket of Dawid Malan on Wednesday night, while Lyon is the leading wicket-taker in tests this year and his captain described his bowling in Adelaide as "exceptional".

"Paddy, Josh and I have grown up together -- Gazza`s a bit older -- we`ve been around each other for a long time and we`re really close mates," Starc added.

"I think that shows in the way we play our cricket and we`re gelling really nicely and complementing each other really well.

"Gazza`s bowling the house down at the moment and that allows the other three of us to just do what we do at the other end. Josh does what he does and allows Pat and I to bowl as fast as we want."
Smith said he was keen for his bowlers and batsmen to get some rest before the Perth test starts next Thursday.

"There`s a reasonable break between now and Perth so the bowlers can freshen up and the batters can freshen their minds, and we can come back and hopefully win the Ashes back in Perth," he added.

The test will be the last at the WACA and Starc said he was hoping to be presented with a bowling surface that harked back to the days when the likes of Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson terrorised English batsmen in Perth.

"Hopefully we see a nice fast, bouncy wicket, the WACA of old, and get stuck into that as a bowling group," he said.

'It's always tough coming back from 2-0 down, particularly when you're away from home,' said Smith.

Australia's Mitchell Starc has created history by taking two hat-tricks in the same game.

The Australian paceman took the last three wickets of each innings, finishing with seven in total, as his New South Wales side beat Western Australia by 171 runs.

The 27-year-old becomes the first bowler to complete the feat in the same Shield match and is only the eighth player to do it in a first-class game.

Starc's feat was the first instance since Amin Lakhani managed to do the same for a Combined XI against India in a warm-up match at Multan in Pakistan in 1978.
