Thousands of garment workers in Bangladesh took to the streets on Monday (Oct 30) in protests that resulted in factory vandalism and clashes with security forces.

They were demanding a nearly threefold increase in the minimum wage, as conditions for many workers remain challenging in this major global garment exporter, reported AFP.

The protests unfolded in key industrial areas. At least 10,000 workers in Gazipur, Bangladesh's largest industrial city, left their shifts to participate, while another 7,000 workers protested in the central towns of Ashulia and Hemayetpur.

The garment union leader of the Ashulia region contested the police figures, suggesting that the total number of protesters was closer to 100,000.

Despite being one of the world's leading garment exporters, Bangladesh's workers have been grappling with meager wages.

The basic monthly wage for these workers is a mere 8,300 taka ($75). Protests erupted after the manufacturers' association offered a 25 per cent wage increase, falling significantly short of the unions' demand for a new monthly minimum wage of 23,000 taka ($208).

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Thursday that the minimum wage would be raised to 8500 liras (USD 455). In December 2021, the minimum wage was 2826 liras.

More than 40 per cent of Turkey's working citizens earn minimum wage. When he rose to power two decades ago, working classes were the main support base of Erdogan.

But Turkey's poor have been hit the hardest by an economic crisis that has seen the official annual inflation rate reach 85 percent.

It was raised to 4,253 liras last January and then to 5,500 in July.

But an accompanying plunge in the lira's value means that the wage has been raised only fractionally in dollar terms in the past year.

Turkey's latest economic crisis started when Erdogan -- a lifelong opponent of high interest rates -- pressured the central bank to bring down chronically high consumer prices by lowering borrowing costs.

Conventional economic theory urges policymakers to fight inflation by curbing demand and raising the price of doing business through higher interest rates.

Erdogan's approach set off a currency crisis that saw the lira lose nearly half its value in a matter of weeks late last year.

The government has responded by spending its reserves on currency support measures and imposing complex economic rules aimed at bringing inflation under control.

Turkey looks to fight inflation by raising minimum wage third time

Economy Minister Paulo Guedes stated on Tuesday that Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro's administration is considering hiking the minimum wage and civil servant wages above inflation, but he disputed plans to eliminate middle-class tax benefits.&nbsp;

The comments were made in advance of the Oct. 30 runoff election for president, in which right-wing Bolsonaro is trailing former leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in the polls. The remarks were made at a virtual event on cooperativism.&nbsp;

Bolsonaro's campaign took a knock after Folha de So Paulo reported last week that the government was considering eliminating a constitutional requirement to raise the minimum wage annually by at least the inflation rate from the previous year.

According to studies conducted by the ministry, the ability to deduct medical and educational costs from income tax should be eliminated, according to a story published in the O Estado de S. Paulo newspaper on Tuesday. The middle class would be primarily impacted by such a measure.&nbsp;

In both instances, Guedes confirmed the existence of internal studies but blamed Lula's Workers Party (PT) employees who work in the ministry for their creation and disclosure.&nbsp;

Geneva voters say 'yes' to ‘world’s highest’ minimum wage as wealth gap widens

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the introduction of a bill that will codify relevant provisions of four existing laws and intends to increase the legislative protection of minimum wage to the entire workforce.&nbsp;

Sources said The Codes on Wages Bill, 2019 will be introduced in the ongoing Budget Session of parliament and would benefit about 50 crore workers.

They said the codification proposes to simplify 32 central labour laws into four codes to bring them in sync with the emerging economic situation, facilitate easier compliance by establishments, promote ease of living and ensure labour welfare and wage and social security for workers.

The Code of Wages Bill is the first in the series of four labour codes. It seeks to subsume relevant provisions of The Minimum Wages Act, 1948, Payment of Wages Act 1936, Payment of Bonus Act Act, 1965 and Equal Remuneration Act 1976.&nbsp;

Sources said many states have multiple minimum wages and the code simplifies it by doing away with the type of employment as one of the criteria.&nbsp;

There are 2000 rates of minimum wages and the code reduces the number substantially. The fixation of the minimum wage will primarily be based on geography and skills.

Many changes have also been introduced in inspection regimes such as web-based random computerised inspection scheme, jurisdiction-free inspections and calling for information electronically.

It universalises the provision of minimum wages and timely payment of wages to all employees irrespective of sector or wage ceiling. At present, the provisions of the Minimum Wages Act and Payment of Wages Act apply on workers below a particular wage ceiling working in scheduled employments only.

Sources said the code would ensure the right of sustenance of every worker and intends to increase the legislative protection of minimum wage from existing 40 per cent to 100 per cent of the workforce. They said the bill would ensure that every worker gets minimum wage. A statutory floor wage would be introduced, which will be computed based on minimum living conditions.

The states would notify the payment of wages to workers through digital mode. The definition of wages, now different under different labour laws, has been simplified to reduce litigation and will entail a lesser cost of compliance for an employer and the rules to be framed would prescribe one template.&nbsp;

Remaining fuel subsidies are expected to be cut around mid-2019, and the petroleum minister said last month Egypt would implement an automatic price indexation mechanism on 95 octane petrol starting in April.

Under the measures announced by Sisi, state employees will receive a raise of 7 per cent, or a minimum of 75 pounds, while those not employed in the civil service will receive a 10 per cent raise, also receiving at least 75 pounds.

Low-wage workers to strike across US tomorrow

In a &quot;monumental&quot; verdict on Friday, a British tribunal ruled that taxi app Uber should treat its drivers as employees and pay them the minimum wage and holiday pay.

In July, two Taxi drivers brought their case to an employment tribunal, complaining that the online transportation company was acting unlawfully by treating them as self-employed and not providing certain rights.

Uber said it will appeal against the verdict. The app-based company that allows users to book and pay for a taxi by smartphone had argued that its employees were self-employed contractors.

&quot;This is a monumental victory that will have a hugely positive impact on drivers ... and for thousands more in other industries where bogus self-employment is rife,&quot; said Maria Ludkin, legal director at the GMB union which brought the case, reported Reuters.

In a "monumental" verdict on Friday, a British tribunal ruled that taxi app Uber should treat its drivers as employees and pay them the minimum wage and holiday pay. In July, two Taxi drivers brought their case to an employment tribunal, complaining that the online transportation company was acting unlawfully by treating them as self-employed and not providing certain rights. Uber said it will appeal against the verdict. The app-based company that allows users to book and pay for a taxi by smartphone had argued that its employees were self-employed contractors. "This is a monumental victory that will have a hugely positive impact on drivers ... and for thousands more in other industries where bogus self-employment is rife," said Maria Ludkin, legal director at the GMB union which brought the case, reported Reuters. The tribunal ruled that the drivers be paid minimum wage and that working hours began when the drivers logged into the app. The current minimum wage is 7.20 pounds ($8.80) for over 21-year-olds. In an attempt to appease trade unions that have threatened to go on strike, Indian finance minister Arun Jaitley today announced a hike in minimum wages from the current $3.67 (246 INR) to $5.22 (350 INR)for unskilled workers per day. 
 
&quot;In the past one-and-a-half years, the inter-ministerial committee had a&nbsp;meeting with central trade unions. Trade unions placed various demands. Some were labour-related and some economic policy issues related. The government has taken some decisions with regard to those on the basis of their recommendations,&quot; added Jaitley. 
 
The decision was taken following a meeting under the chairmanship of the Indian labour minister Bandaru Dattatreya, also attended by power minister Piyush Goyal. The registration of the contract workers and their staffing agencies is mandatory and states will be advised to strictly implement the same, the finance minister said. Errant contractors will face appropriate action for any violation, he warned. 
 
Asked about the strike call, Jaitley said: &quot;I think we have responsible trade unions.&quot; 
 
Jaitley told the media that the two years worth of bonus will be paid to Indian central government employees based on revised norms. The Bonus Amendment Act will be implemented &quot;strictly&quot;. Workers employed by the state governments, however, are not covered under the Act. 
 
The likely financial implications of the bonus move translate into $286 million (Rs1,920 crore) per annum. 
 
As many as 10 central trade unions have given a call for a one-day nationwide strike on September 2, 2016, to protest against Prime Minister Modi&#39;s labour reforms. 
 
Tapan Sen, the&nbsp;general secretary of the Centre of Trade Unions, said earlier today the strike would go on despite Jaitley&#39;s promise that the government would release state employees&#39; bonuses for the last two years and increase minimum wages, Reuters reported.
