Local police have informed about the accident in the Sadar police station area.&nbsp;

India: IAF MiG-21 crashes in Rajasthan, killing at least three civilians; rescue operation underway

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has decided to phase out the remaining four squadrons of the Soviet-era MiG-21 fighter aircraft within a three-year time frame, with one of them likely to retire from service in September this year, according to reports.

The air force plans to retire all&nbsp;four MiG-21 squadrons by 2025. Currently, the IAF has around 70 MiG-21 aircraft and 50 MiG-29 variants.

Apart from that, plans are also afoot to retire the MiG-29 fleet, with the officials drawing up a timeline to phase out in the next five years.

Notably, the decision comes days after two IAF pilots died after MiG-21 fighter aircraft they were flying crashed in western Rajasthan's Barmer district on Thursday. A Court of Inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the accident.

But the officials maintained that the plan to retire the ageing fleet is part of the IAF’s modernisation drive and not linked to Barmer incident, according to PTI news agency.

Srinagar-based No. 51 squadron, which is also known as “Sword Arms,” is set to be retired by September 30. The squadron generally comprises 17 to 20 aircraft.

MiGs long stay in the IAF

The MiG-21 is India’s longest-serving fighter plane. However, the aircraft has had a very poor safety record of late.

The aircraft was designed by the Mikoyan-Gurevich Design Bureau (OKB) of the erstwhile Soviet Union, and it made its maiden flight on 16 June, 1955.

The first fleet of the MiG variant was inducted into the IAF in 1963 and India procured over 700 MiG-variants in the subsequent decades.

India’s decision to buy MiG series should be looked through the prism of 1962 war China and growing hostility from Pakistan. At the time, India was desperately scaling up its military capability to prepare for attack despite cash-strapped economy.

The Soviet Union was willing to sell this fighter aircraft on extremely favourable terms and even agreed for licensed production by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

In 2000, Indian MiG-21s were upgraded with new censors and weapons. The modified version was later used by Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman who shot down a F-16 fighter of Pakistan in 2019, a day after India had carried out air strikes in Balakot.

Number of crashes and deaths

Though MiGs are the backbone of the IAF, the aircraft has earned numerous monikers, such as ‘flying coffin’&nbsp;and ‘widow maker’ due to frequent crashes.

According to a Times of India newspaper report, over 400 MiG-21s have crashed since 1971-72, killing over 200 pilots and another 50 people on the ground.

Bharat-Rakshak.com, an aviation website that works closely with the IAF, has documented the accidents that the MiG has seen since its induction. The first two MiG crashes took place in December 1963.

Why is India still using MiG-21?

According to reports, the MiG-21 had completed its retirement period in the mid-1990s.

It is not as if IAF was impervious to the series of crashes and the faulty mechanism of the MiGs. Due to delays in induction of new fighter aircraft, the IAF has been forced to keep the ageing flights to maintain a certain squadron strength to guard India's skies.

Apart from that, there have been delays in the indigenous Tejas programme, political controversy surrounding the Rafael deal and slow-paced procurement procedure. With no avenues to increase the fleet strength, the IAF had to keep MiGs in service longer than usual.

The MiG-21 fighter jets, however, had a very bad safety record. Therefore, the air force has begun replacing them with stronger aircraft like the Su-30 and indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA).

Five pilots have died in six MiG-21 crashes during the past 20 months.

The LCA Tejas aircraft were scheduled to replace the MiG-21s long ago, but delays in their introduction have compelled the IAF to continue using these aircraft.

Before flying, the IAF conducts thorough inspections of these aircraft, and all safety precautions are taken, according to the officer.

The officials announced that the number-plated squadron will soon be reactivated with a more capable aircraft.

The MiG-21 aircraft crash has once again brought attention to the IAF's ageing fleet of Soviet-made MiG-21 aircraft, which have been in approximately 200 accidents since they were initially introduced in the early 1960s.&nbsp;

Weeks before accepting the Rafale fighter jets, Indian Air Force Chief BS Dhanoa on Tuesday will resurrect the 17 Squadron, which will be the first unit to operate the French-origin fighters in the force.

After a deep internal review of the recent conflict with Pakistan,<a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/air-strike-heres-why-balakot-was-chosen-by-indian-air-force-199792"> the Indian Army is planning to deploy</a> a number of its air defence units close to the border to thwart aerial threats emanating from Pakistan.

"Some of the fighting formations including air defence and other defensive formations are now planned to be moved closer to the borders," top Army sources told ANI.

"With these air defence units deployed closer to the border, we would be able to tackle any possible aerial strike from enemy side and thwart it close to the border itself," they said.

The sources said the location of the air defence units deployed in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Gujarat and Rajasthan were reviewed by the force and it was felt that a number of them can be moved to forward locations to thwart enemy aerial strikes close to the borders itself.

Indian Army to move air defence units closer to Pakistan border post-Balakot strikes

Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Monday briefed US National Security Advisor John Bolton about the measures taken by Islamabad to de-escalate tensions with India following the Pulwama terror attack.

Tensions flared up between India and Pakistan after a suicide bomber of Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) killed 40 CRPF personnel in Kashmir's Pulwama district on February 14.

Amid mounting outrage, the Indian Air Force carried out a counter-terror operation, hitting the biggest JeM training camp in Balakot, deep inside Pakistan on February 26.

The next day, Pakistan Air Force retaliated and downed a MiG-21 in aerial combat and captured Indian pilot, who was handed over to India on March 1.

The Foreign Office (FO) said that Qureshi and Bolton, during their telephonic conversation, discussed regional security situation following the Pulwama incident.

"The purpose of the call was to provide him Pakistan's perspective on the recent regional developments," the FO said.

Qureshi's call to Bolton came ahead of Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale's meetings with top Trump Administration officials, including Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, in Washington.&nbsp;

Qureshi said the Indian "aggression" of February 26 was a violation of Pakistan's territorial integrity and sovereignty as well as the UN Charter.

He also said that Pakistan's response on February 27 was "purely in self-defence against external aggression".

The FO said the foreign minister "informed Bolton about the de-escalatory measures taken by Pakistan".

Qureshi said that Prime Minister Imran Khan decided to hand over the Indian pilot as a gesture of goodwill towards India. Pakistan wished peace and stability in the region.

He said Pakistan's High Commissioner to India Sohail Mahmood has returned to Delhi after consultations.

Islamabad would send an official delegation to India on March 14 to discuss the modalities for the operationalisation of the Kartarpur Corridor, also was ready to continue with the weekly meeting at the level of the Directorate General of Military Operations, the Pakistan foreign minister said.

Ambassador Bolton said that he and Secretary of State Pompeo, despite being actively engaged in talks with North Korea in Hanoi, monitored the developments between

India and Pakistan and kept contact with the leadership of two countries to ensure that the security situation in the South Asia region did not deteriorate, the statement said.

Bolton appreciated Pakistan's measures which had helped to lower the tension and urged continued restraint on both sides, it said.

"The need for dialogue between Pakistan and India to find a peaceful resolution to all outstanding disputes was also emphasized," the FO statement said.

"The Foreign Minister cautioned against any Indian misadventure, keeping in view the forthcoming elections. Ambassador Bolton concurred," it said.

It said that Ambassador Bolton also appreciated Pakistan's important role in the Afghan peace process. Both leaders agreed to work together to pursue the process.
