<p>The US vetoed a draft resolution which proposed to the 193-member UN General Assembly that&nbsp;"the State of Palestine&nbsp;be admitted&nbsp;to membership"&nbsp;of the UN.</p>

<p>Twelve&nbsp;member countries of the UN Security Council&nbsp;voted in&nbsp;favour&nbsp;of the resolution.&nbsp;Meanwhile, the United Kingdom and Switzerland abstained.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Palestinian Authority&nbsp;President,&nbsp;Mahmoud Abbas, in a statement, slammed the US veto, stating that it was&nbsp;“unfair, immoral, and unjustified, and defies the will&nbsp;of&nbsp;the international community, which strongly supports the&nbsp;State&nbsp;of&nbsp;Palestine obtaining full membership in the United Nations.”</p>

<p>Meanwhile, speaking in the council after the voting, Palestinian UN Ambassador Riyad&nbsp;Mansour,&nbsp;said, "The fact that this resolution did not pass will not break our will&nbsp;and&nbsp;it will not defeat our determination. We will not stop in our effort."</p>

<p>However,&nbsp;Israel’s&nbsp;Foreign Minister Israel Katz was full of praise for the US and appreciated the&nbsp;country's&nbsp;decision to veto what he said was a&nbsp;“shameful proposal".</p>

<p>The Turkish parliament on Tuesday (Jan 23) gave its long-awaited approval to Sweden's NATO membership, pushing the Nordic country significantly closer to the Western military alliance. Hungary is the only other NATO country left to ratify the Swedish membership bid.<br />

Three months after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan submitted a bill which approved Sweden's membership to parliament, the country's MPs voted in favour of ratification late on Tuesday night.</p>

<p>After a four-hour-long debate, 287 lawmakers voted in favour of Sweden's NATO membership, while 55 voted against it. Sweden is now likely to become the 32nd member of the alliance. The Turkish president is likely to sign the ratification document of Sweden and conclude the role of Ankara in the protracted saga in the days ahead.</p>

<p>Taking to social media after the voting, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said, "Today we are one step closer to becoming a full member of NATO Positive that the Grand General Assembly of Turkey has voted in favour of Sweden’s Nato accession.”</p>

<p>Sweden’s Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom said that the vote was “of course good”, but added that the government is now waiting for Erdogan to sign the ratification and send it on. “Of course, we are not finished with the process until it has happened, on the Turkish side,” he said while speaking to Swedish broadcaster SVT.</p>

<p>The United States further appreciated the approval granted by the Turkish parliament, with National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan stating on social media that the addition of Sweden to NATO is set to make the alliance "safer and stronger".</p>

<h2><strong>Hungary PM says 'reaffirmed' support to Sweden membership</strong></h2>

<p>Hungary Prime Minister Victor Orban said on Wednesday that he 'reaffirmed' his country's support to Sweden's NATO membership in a phone call with NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg.</p>

<p>"I reaffirmed that the Hungarian government supports the NATO membership of Sweden," Orban wrote on X, formerly Twitter.</p>

<p>"I also stressed that we will continue to urge the Hungarian National Assembly to vote in favour of Sweden's accession and conclude the ratification at the first possible opportunity," he added.</p>

<p>Hungary is the last holdout to Sweden's bid to join NATO. Verbal reaffirmation of support may not necessarily indicate that hightly technical, formal process of official ratification will move forward swiftly.</p>

<h2><strong>African Union suspends membership of Gabon</strong></h2>

<p>African Union suspended the membership of Gabon on Thursday (August 31), one day after President Ali Bongo was ousted by military officers.<br />

It “decides to immediately suspend the participation of Gabon in all activities of the AU, its organs and institutions until the restoration of constitutional order in the country,” read the post.<br />

With this step, Gabon, which is already not a part of the influential bloc of West African nations ECOWAS, has also lost the economic cushion of the African Union.<br />

<p>The communique released by NATO Heads of State and governments participating in the meeting in Vilnius on 11 July 2023, stated that Ukraine would join the alliance "when allies agree and conditions are met."&nbsp;</p>

<p>NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg on Sunday appealed to Turkey to give up its opposition to Sweden's bid to become a member of the US-led defence alliance, hoping that the accession of Stockholm would be finalised "as soon as possible".<br />

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been facing pressure to give the green light to NATO membership of Sweden ahead of a summit which will be scheduled in July in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius.<br />

"Membership will make Sweden safer but also make NATO and Turkey stronger," Stoltenberg said while speaking to journalists after holding talks with President Erdogan along with Turkey's newly appointed Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, who was earlier heading the intelligence agency in Istanbul.<br />

"I look forward to finalising Sweden's accession as soon as possible," he stated.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Sweden was accused by Erdogan of being a haven for "terrorists" like the members of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), a group that Turkey and its Western allies have blacklisted.<br />

"Sweden has taken significant concrete steps to meet Turkey's concerns," Stoltenberg stated.<br />
<br />
"This includes amending the Swedish constitution, ending the arms embargo, and stepping up counter-terrorism operations including against the PKK. Sweden has fulfilled its obligations," he added.<br />

Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom also stated that Stockholm had fulfilled "all the commitments" to join NATO and appealed to Hungary and Turkey to permit his country into the alliance.<br />

A statement by the alliance said that&nbsp;Stoltenberg is visiting the Middle-Eastern nation to&nbsp;attend the inauguration ceremony for the President of the Republic of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in Ankara on Saturday, 3 June.</p>

<p>In addition to attending the ceremony, the NATO chief will also hold bilateral meetings with President Erdogan and with senior Turkish officials, the statement added.&nbsp;</p>

NATO Secretary General who was in Oslo for the bloc's foreign ministers' meeting said, "There are no guarantees but it's absolutely possible to reach a solution and enable the decision on full membership for Sweden by then."&nbsp;</p>

<p>The next NATO summit will be held in Vilnius, Lithuania on July 11-12, 2023.&nbsp;Stoltenberg said that Sweden is "within reach" to join the summit in time.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"There are no guarantees but it's absolutely possible to reach a solution and enable the decision on full membership for Sweden by then," Stoltenberg told reporters in Oslo on the eve of a NATO foreign ministers' meeting to prepare for the summit.</p>

<p>"We firmly believe that a European future is the only way to solve a number of problems in the region, whether economic, social or ethnic," said Minister Bek.</p>

<p>In 2008, Kosovo, an Albanian-majority nation, declared independence from Serbia with the support of the West after the 1998-1999 war in which NATO’s intervention took place to protect the territory.</p>

<p>The chief executive of Ukraine's cricket board says it "ticks all the boxes" to become an associate member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) and that the game would not survive if it was denied entry. Ukraine is expected to get second-tier membership at the governing body`s board meeting this month, entitling the war-torn country to Twenty20 International status and funds from the ICC, which has earmarked $30.8 million for its 96 associate members this year.</p>

<p>The Ukraine Cricket Federation (UCF) has been organising cricket for the last two decades and has a pool of 15,000 students, most of them Indian, at the senior level. Its chief executive Kobus Olivier told Reuters it met all the ICC requirements before Russia invaded.</p>

<p>"We ticked all the boxes on Feb. 24 when the war started," he said. "I have so much belief in this process ... and I am absolutely confident Ukraine will be an associate member of the ICC." Olivier, a South African, said the ICC should take note of how the EU "fast-tracked" Ukraine`s candidate status to join the bloc, saying it set a "very good precedent".</p>

<p>UCF President Hardeep Singh has made arrangements for national team players to train in India while Olivier set up base in Zagreb after fleeing Kyiv. He is effectively running the UCF`s junior and women cricket programmes from Zagreb and engaging refugees, mostly mothers and children, in cricket-in-the-park sessions three days a week.</p>

<p>"It will be the end of cricket in Ukraine," he said. The Lord`s Taverners, a British charity, and the MCC Foundation, the charity arm of cricket`s lawmakers, have given support to the UCF but sponsorship funds have dried up.</p>
