<p>"Atal Tunnel, connecting Manali to Leh, is the world''s longest highway tunnel above 10,000 feet. The estimated period for completion of this tunnel was less than 6 years but it was completed in 10 years," said KP Purushothaman, Chief Engineer.</p>

<p>"There are CCTV cameras at every 60 metres and emergency exit tunnels at every 500 metres inside the tunnel. The tunnel will reduce the distance between Manali and Leh by 46 kilometres and four hours can be saved," said KP Purushothaman.</p>

<p>Fire hydrants have also been installed inside the tunnel in case of any fire incident.</p>

<p>"The induction and de-induction of resources was a difficult task while it was under construction. We did face a lot of challenges but together we were able to complete its construction. The tunnel's width is 10.5 metres, including footpath of 1 metre on both sides," said KP Purushothaman.</p>

<p>Speaking to ANI, Colonel Parikshit Mehra, Director, Atal Tunnel project said that many experts working within the team were of the opinion to change the alignment of the tunnel.</p>

<p>"We have had this dream to connect Leh and this was the first step to the connectivity ladder. This tunnel was a challenging project because we were working only from two ends. The other end was in North, across the Rohtang Pas which was accessible only for around five months in a year," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Three trekkers identified as, Puneet, Nikhil and Ashutosh,&nbsp;are reportedly from Jubbal area in Shimla district. However, the identities of the other three were yet to be ascertained but they are&nbsp;said to be from Delhi.</p>

<p>According to reports, the rescue operation for locating and bringing them to safer places will restart from Wednesday morning.</p>

<p>The ANI further reported that a rescue team has already been constituted which has proceeded towards Kinnaur on Tuesday morning and it would start trekking Sangta from Jakha on Wednesday.</p>

<p>Kinnaur police have also been intimated and a police rescue team along with the jawans of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) has proceeded towards the Rupin pass.</p>

<p>However, the tunnel will not be in use until 2019.</p>

<p>Colonel N M Chandarana, the chief engineer of Rohtang Tunnel project, Solang said: &quot;The team has without any failures successfully completed the project after&nbsp;hard work of seven years.&quot;</p>

<p>He further added that this year during the winters they will devise a plan so that the tribals of Lahula can use the tunnel during an emergency.</p>

Indian police on Monday arrested two men suspected of raping a 25-year-old Israeli tourist in the popular northern Indian Himalayan resort town of Manali, local officers said.<br />

The arrests were made following a complaint by the woman that she was attacked early Sunday after flagging down what she thought was a taxi and asking for a lift to a nearby town.<br />

&quot;Two of the six accused of raping an Israeli national have been arrested. Both the men are locals,&quot; said Sanjay Kumar, the police chief of Himachal Pradesh state.<br />

&quot;A search operation is on to arrest the remaining four accused. The vehicle involved in the crime has also been recovered,&quot; Kumar added.<br />
Earlier Monday police Superintendent Padam Chand said the woman had alleged that there were six people in the car, two of whom raped her before fleeing.<br />

The woman had been trying to meet up with friends who had already left for the nearby town of Keylong after they all arrived in Manali a few days earlier.<br />

Police viewed CCTV footage of the streets of Manali, popular both with holidaying foreigners and Indians, to help identify the suspects.<br />
The woman was being treated in hospital after she reported the attack, which took place at about 3am, at the Manali police station later on Sunday.<br />
