China has sent across over a million bottles filled with water from melting Tibetan glaciers to the Maldives which is currently reeling under the detrimental impact of climate change.

With salt levels dripping into the land and corrupting water that is potable, the low-lying archipelago nation, which comprises over 1,192 tiny coral islands, is at the forefront of the climate crisis, further pushing it to be dependent on desalination plants.

According to the scientists, the Himalayan glaciers are melting faster than ever due to the climate change.

<h2>'Gift from world's highest mountains'</h2>

The Maldives foreign ministry released a statement saying that the consignment of 1,500 tonnes of drinking water was a gift from Yan Jinhai, the chairman of the Xizang Autonomous Region, or Tibet, lying more than 3,385 kilometres (2,100 miles) away on the far side of the world's highest mountain range.

The bottles of water, which were packed into 90 sea containers, had arrived last week and were&nbsp;unloaded in the capital city Male, said a port authority official.

"The Chairman of Xizang Autonomous Region announced his wish to donate 1,500 tonnes of drinking water... during his official visit to the country in November," the Maldives foreign ministry said in a statement.&nbsp;

<h2>Shortage of water</h2>

Earlier, there were reports that the water was imported for the consumption of President Mohamed Muizzu, who is also dubbed as pro-China.

However, the ministry rebuffed the accusations stating that the ministry had decided to utilise the water to assist islands.

"The government of Maldives has decided to utilise the water to provide assistance to islands in case of water shortage," it said.

<h2>Maldives to get free military assistance from China</h2>

Earlier this month, China inked a defence cooperation agreement with the Maldives that will offer the island nation free military aid to promote "stronger" bilateral ties.

The Defence Minister of the Maldives Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon met with Major General Zhang Baoqun, Deputy Director of the Office for International Military Cooperation of China, and discussed strengthening defence cooperation between the two nations.

Maumoon and Major General Baoqun "signed an agreement on China's provision of military assistance gratis to the Republic of Maldives, fostering stronger bilateral ties," the Maldivian defence ministry posted on its X handle.

Previously, China has also gifted 12 environmentally efficient ambulances to the Maldives.

Climate change-threatened Maldives receives Tibetan glacier water from China

After weeks of anti-India rhetoric, Maldives' President Mohammad Muizzu has shifted to a distinctly reconciliatory tone for New Delhi. The reasons are not difficult to find as the Maldives owes India some $49 million and Male seeks debt relief from New Delhi.

Maldives President Muizzu pleads for debt relief from India

After his anti-India rhetoric, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu has struck a reconciliatory tone, saying India will continue to remain his country’s “closest ally” and urged New Delhi to provide debt relief to the archipelago nation.

The Maldives owed approximately USD 400.9 million to India by the end of last year.

Ever since he took oath as the president in November last year, the pro-China Maldivian leader has pursued a hardline stand towards India and within hours had demanded that Indian military personnel operating three aviation platforms be repatriated from his country by May 10.

On Thursday, in his first interview with the local media since assuming office, Muizzu said India was instrumental in providing aid to the Maldives and has implemented the "greatest number" of projects.

India will continue to remain the Maldives’ closest ally, he said and emphasised that there was no question about it, Maldives news portal Edition.mv said in a report that carried excerpts of Muizzu’s interview to its Dhivehi language sister-publication ‘Mihaaru.’

Muizzu’s comments praising India came after the first batch of Indian military personnel left the island nation this month as planned. By May 10, Muizzu had demanded that all 88 military personnel, manning the three Indian aviation platforms, should leave the country.

India has been providing humanitarian and medical evacuation services to the people of the Maldives for the last few years using two helicopters and a Dornier aircraft.

The Maldives' proximity to India, barely 70 nautical miles from the island of Minicoy in Lakshadweep and 300 nautical miles from the mainland's western coast, and its location at the hub of commercial sea lanes running through the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) gives it significant strategic importance.

During the interview, Muizzu urged India to accommodate debt relief measures for the Maldives in the repayment of “the hefty loans taken over consecutive governments.”

“The conditions we have inherited are such that there are very large loans taken from India. Hence, we are holding discussions to explore leniencies in the repayment structure of these loans.

“Instead of halting any ongoing projects ... to proceed with them at speed, so I see no reason for any adverse effects (on Maldives-India relations),” Muizzu added.

Muizzu’s conciliatory comments towards India came ahead of Parliament elections in Maldives slated in mid-April.
</section>

He said Maldives has taken significant loans from India, which are heftier than can be borne by the Maldivian economy. “Due to this, he is currently discussing with the Indian government to explore options to repay the loans to the best of the Maldives’ economic capabilities,” the news portal said quoting him.

Muizzu, who expressed hope that India would “facilitate debt relief measures in the repayment of these loans,” also said that he has conveyed his appreciation to the Indian government for their contributions.

During the previous regime, headed by pro-India leader Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration, the total amount of loans taken from the Export and Import Bank of India (Exim Bank) stood at USD 1.4 million (MVR 22 million).

“Together with this, the amount owed by Maldives to India by the end of last year stood at MVR 6.2 billion, he said.

At the current rate of 1 MVR equal to USD 16, this is approximately USD 400.9 million.

“I also conveyed to Prime Minister Modi during our meeting that I did not intend to halt any ongoing projects. Instead, I expressed my desire to strengthen and expedite them” he said, referring to his discussion with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Dubai on the sidelines of the COP28 summit in Dubai in December 2023.

“I suggested a high-level committee be established, one designed for quick decision-making even in the bridge project to ensure speedy work. The same for the Hanimaadhoo Airport,” he added.

Answering a question about Indian military personnel, Muizzu termed it as “the only matter of contention” that arose with India about the presence of Indian military in the Maldives and added that India, too, had accepted the fact and agreed to withdraw the military personnel.

“It is not nice to dismiss or disregard aid from one country to another as useless,” he said and claimed that he had not taken any action or made any statements that may strain the relationship between the two countries.

“Even if they are troops of some other country, we will deal with them in the same manner. I have said so very clearly. It is nothing personal but rather a matter of our national security,” he added.

Muizzu stated that his government acted to find the swiftest and most prudent solution through deliberations to deal with the issue of the Indian military in the Maldives.

He defended his agreement with India to deploy civilians instead of military personnel to run the helicopters and the Dornier aircraft saying that the erstwhile Abdulla Yameen administration which demanded the Indian troops to be sent out has not succeeded as Indian personnel remained in the Maldives.

While the same goals were being worked for in both instances, Muizzu indicated that results can be achieved through discussions and deliberations. “Everything can be achieved through discussions and deliberations. That’s what I believe,” he said.

Meanwhile, amid his tenuous ties with India, Muizzu had pursued an obvious pro-China policy starting with his January visit to Beijing. During his China visit, he signed a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership besides signing 20 agreements to assist Maldives infrastructure after his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

China also announced a USD 130 million grant besides promising to send more Chinese tourists to the tourism-dependent Maldives.

After his return from China, Muizzu, without naming any country, said Maldives may be a small country, but “that is not a license for anybody to bully us.”

Muizzu also terminated a hydrography agreement with India and has been claiming that the Indian Ocean does not belong to any particular country.

India starts withdrawing troops from Maldives as ties with Male remain tense

Recent data from the Maldives tourism ministry has indicated&nbsp;a drop&nbsp;of&nbsp;33 per cent in number of Indian tourists visiting&nbsp;the country in March 2024, compared to the previous year, reported local media outlet&nbsp;Adhadhu.

In March 2023, over 41,000 Indian tourists visited Maldives, whereas only 27,224 were recorded in March 2024. The primary cause attributed to this decline is India's tourism campaign encouraging citizens to explore the Lakshadweep islands instead of travelling to Maldives.

Until March 2023, India held the position of the second largest source of tourism for Maldives, commanding a 10 per cent market share. However, due to escalating diplomatic tensions between the two nations, India has slipped to sixth place, now holding only a six percent market share.

<h2>Rise of Chinese tourism</h2>

Conversely, China has witnessed a surge in tourist arrivals to Maldives, coinciding with strengthening ties between China and Maldives. With over 54,000 tourist arrivals from China in 2024, it&nbsp;has become the leading source of tourism for Maldives, commanding a significant portion of the market.

This development follows Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu establishing a deadline for the initial withdrawal of Indian military personnel from his nation, as tensions between the two countries continue to escalate.

Muizzu asserted that no Indian military personnel, even those disguised in civilian clothing, will remain in his country beyond May 10, according to a media report on Tuesday.

This announcement follows the arrival of an Indian civilian team in the Maldives to take control of one of the three aviation platforms, well ahead of the March 10 deadline for the withdrawal of Indian military personnel, as agreed upon by both nations.

In January, amid tensions between India and Maldives, president Mohamed Muizzu had said that though his nation was small "it does not give countries the license to bully us".

In an oblique response to the remark, India's external affairs minister S Jaishankar recently stated that "big bullies do not provide $4.5 billion aid to their neighbors in times of distress".

The video clip of Jaishankar's response quickly spread across social media platforms, gaining widespread attention.

During his tour of the Baa atoll Eydhafushi residential community, President Muizzu addressed false rumours circulating about the presence of Indian troops in civilian attire. New base in Lakshadweep, Submarine-hunting choppers: Indian Navy strengthens presence near Maldives

The Indian Navy said Saturday it plans to build a base called INS Jatayu on Minicoy, the southernmost island in the Lakshadweep archipelago. India's Lakshadweep islands lie about 130 kilometres (80 miles) north of the Maldives. It said a more detailed plan will be published Wednesday.

Indian Navy to open strategic base near Maldives

Indian Navy is poised to bolster its operational prowess with the commissioning of INS Jatayu at the Minicoy islands in the Union Territory of Lakshadweep, a significant stride towards fortifying security infrastructure in the wider region.&nbsp;

Set against the backdrop of strategic importance, the commissioning ceremony, presided over by Chief of the Naval Staff Adm R Hari Kumar on March 6, 2024, will herald a new chapter in naval operations.

Naval Detachment Minicoy was established in the early 1980s under the operational command of the Naval Officer-in-Charge (Lakshadweep)&nbsp;signifying&nbsp;India's commitment to enhancing maritime security in the region.

Minicoy Island lies at the southernmost end of the Lakshadweep archipelago in the Arabian Sea.&nbsp;The separation between Minicoy and Thuraakunu (the northernmost island of Maldives) spans 70 nautical miles.

Nestled as the southernmost outpost of Lakshadweep, Minicoy Island commands a pivotal position, overseeing vital Sea Lines of Communications (SLOCs).

"Basing of an independent Naval unit with requisite infrastructure and resources will enhance the overall operational capability of the Indian Navy in the islands. The base will enhance operational reach and facilitate Indian Navy’s operational effort towards &nbsp; Anti-Piracy and Anti-Narcotics Operations in Western Arabian Sea. It will also augment Indian Navy’s capability as the first responder in the region and augment connectivity with the mainland. The establishment of a Naval base is in line with the Govt of India’s focus towards comprehensive development of islands," a government release said.&nbsp;
