<p>Kamal Haasan’s fledgeling political party Makkal Needhi Maiam is witnessing the mass resignation of its top rung leaders after the party faced a severe rout in their maiden Assembly Elections in Tamil Nadu. The developments came to light after the party’s Central Governing Body(CGB) met at their headquarters in Chennai on Thursday evening.&nbsp;</p>

<p>WION has learnt that Haasan had asked members of his party’s Central Governing body to tender their resignations from the respective posts they held(not from the primary membership of the party), following which they obliged. This was ostensibly done because Haasan wanted to do some” soul-searching and make fundamental changes in the party”, after drawing a blank. &nbsp;</p>

<p>“He demanded the resignation and we complied. I think it is because of the defeat and the President decides to look into who is required in the Central governing body. He lost by a small margin, but he did win hearts. It was a wrong constituency selection, had he contested anywhere in Chennai he would’ve won hands down” CK Kumaravel a top entrepreneur, who was asked to resign from the CGB told Zee media.</p>

<p>Shortly after the meeting ended, Kamal’s party issued a statement saying that CGB members Dr R. Mahendran, Muruganandam, Maurya, Thangavelu, Umadevi, CK Kumaravel, Sekar and Suresh Iyer. However, it also added that Kamal Haasan himself would decide on accepting these resignations and the further course of action.&nbsp;</p>

If we consider the workforce even in the 'formal' sector that does not enjoy standard employee benefits, this could be more than 95%. <p>The actor-politician urged the “Government to not lose sight of the plight of these unsung heroes who toil hard to power our economy and build our nation. The 'Economic Response task force' set up by the government needs to address the issue with alacrity.”</p>

<p>"While human lives are in danger and all steps need to be taken to save them, the fear of virus should not be compounded by the fear of loss of livelihood," Kamal Haasan said in the two-page letter.</p>

<p>Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) leader Kamal Haasan on Tuesday said that if needed he and his friend of over four decades, southern superstar Rajinikanth can "come together for the development of Tamil Nadu".</p>

<p>"Our friendship is continuing for the last 44 years. If needed we can come together for the development of Tamil Nadu," Haasan said while speaking to reporters.</p>

<p>Similar views were also echoed by his long-time friend and colleague from the film fraternity, Rajinikanth who stated that he is ready to come together with Haasan for the benefit of people.</p>

<p>"For the benefit of the people if there is a situation to form an alliance with Kamal Haasan, we will definitely come together," Rajinikanth said.</p>

<p>Earlier on November 8, Hasan had said that he and Rajinikanth have differing political views, yet they will always respect each other.</p>

<p>"Both of us (Rajinikanth and Haasan), at a point in time, decided that we'll respect each other as we believed that the future was going to be good for both of us. <p>While Haasan's party drew a blank in the polls, they made a statement by exceeding one lakh votes in few constituencies and by coming third in few others. He said, "We have done well given that we are a new party and did not establish ourselves after splitting from any other political outfit. The main obstacles for our party was widespread poverty and money distribution in the rural pockets."</p>

<p>In some areas we secured 12 per cent vote share and our average vote share is nearly five per cent, Haasan added.</p>

<p>"The theme is a better Tamil Nadu. Though people will say that this is about choosing the Prime Minister, I have chosen Tamil Nadu and that will happen via Delhi because I think whoever becomes the Prime Minister, my prime concern is Tamil Nadu and it will always be so," he said.</p>

<p>Haasan said he does not compare Congress and BJP as they "both have their equal share of mistakes that they have done".</p>

<p>When asked about reports of various political parties promising the release of those involved in the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, Haasan said, "There is a place for law and there is a place for compassion. I think the law has done its part and now it's time for us to show compassion if we have any at all."</p>

<p>Bypolls are due in the 20 constituencies, which have fallen vacant following the Madras High Court last month upholding the disqualification of the 18 AIADMK MLAs who back Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam leader TTV Dhinakaran and in view of demise of two sitting members, including DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi.</p>

<p>Answering a question, Haasan said his basic objective was to facilitate healthy politics.</p>

<p>"When you say healthy politics, it also holds the meaning of being scam free. If we do healthy politics, everyone can strongly hope that all sectors will see growth", he said.</p>

<p>The popular actor said, "I do not make any promises wherever I go. But, I receive it from them (people) instead. They all unanimously promised me that they made a mistake by accepting money for vote and that they will not do that again. I hope they will fulfil it", he said.</p>

<p>"Nobody can be accepted as a leader..Only on the basis of the success of a movie," he told reporters here.</p>

<p>With the Tamil superstar's June 7 movie release in over 2,000 screens worldwide witnessing impressive openings, according to the flick's publicist, Jayakumar said a person is recognised only for his welfare work for the public.</p>

<p>"People accept a person as a leader, based on the policies and goals and for the work done by being on their side," he said, without naming anyone while answering a question over stars and their entry into politics.</p>

<p>"This is the yardstick and there is nothing else," he said, adding fans decide the success of a movie, which has got nothing to do with politics.</p>

<p>'Kaala', that shines light on the struggles of the oppressed people to secure their rights, is viewed by the actor's fans as giving him a better foothold when he enters politics.</p>

<p>The Minister's remark assumes significance not only because of Rajinikanth's fans' high hopes from Kaala, but also over top actor Kamal Haasan's Vishwaroopam 2's release expectations, the production of which was already over.</p>

<p>Actor politician Kamal Haasan Sunday wondered why the ordinance promulgated by the President provided for death penalty for rape of girls under 12 years alone and not for those aged between 14 and 16 and said families should bring up boys to act responsibly.</p>

<p>"Why is the death penalty only for rape of girls aged under 12... what about 14, 15, and 16-year-olds, are they not children too."It will take time for them too (14-16 year-olds) to blossom as women. I do not know how to view it," he said.</p>

<p>The Makkal Needhi Maiam chief was addressing his party workers and supporters through YouTube.</p>

<p>Answering a question on crimes against women and children and the rules he would bring in if his party was voted to power, Haasan said "rules can be formulated... even now death penalty has been prescribed."</p>

<p>Haasan had made known his views against the death penalty before he entered politics.</p>

<p>The MNM chief said the important thing was for families to change their mindset in the way they brought up boys.</p>

<p>"Just like we teach the values of chastity and honesty to girls, boys too must be brought up responsibly by families. Sadly, this was not being done and boys were pampered and allowed to do what they wanted, 'just because he is a male', the actor said.</p>

<p>No government rule was needed to implement this, he said.</p>

<p>President Ram Nath Kovind on Saturday promulgated the criminal law amendment ordinance,paving the way for providing stringent punishment, including "death" penalty, for those convicted of raping girls below the age of 12 years.</p>

<p>The actor turned politician said he had given deep thought as to why he should get into politics when leaders he respected like Mahatma Gandhi and reformist leader Periyar had stayed away from it.</p>

<p>"All along I was keeping quiet thinking I could toe a similar line. Had such leaders been alive today, there would have been a necessity for them to take part in electoral politics," he said.</p>

<p>Haasan said it was not a spur of the moment decision for him to join politics. It was a thought process lasting many years.</p>

<p>There was also some confusion in arriving at a decision but he overcame it, he said The MNM chief said he had a "guilty" feeling as he wondered if politics was pushed to a bad phase due to "carelessness" of the general public and the media in monitoring the government and questioning it.</p>

<p>Haasan alleged that there was arrogance among those in power and hence they were disinclined to answer people's questions. Such factors steadily pushed him towards getting into politics.</p>

<p>He replied in the negative when asked whether he ever regretted entering politics.</p>

<p>To a question, the actor said his brand of politics would be driven by people's welfare and he did not hanker for power.</p>

<p>To another question, he said "you decide what I should be... whether the Chief Minister or Leader of Opposition." On eradicating caste, Haasan said it was a 'disease' and it should be eradicated.</p>

<p>Caste-based discrimination was a reason for poverty.</p>

<p>Caste could not be eradicated immediately he said and called for a change from a personal level to facilitate it.</p>

<p>Stating that 'gram swarajya' was a possibility, he said his party has adopted already a village and more will be done.</p>

<p>He told his cadres to deal firmly and properly if political parties put obstacles during their welfare work.</p>

"All along I was keeping quiet thinking I could toe a similar line. Had such leaders been alive today, there would have been a necessity for them to take part in electoral politics," he said. Leading actor Kamal Haasan today formally entered politics by launching a party named Makkal Needhi Maiam (People's Justice Party) at a public meeting in Madurai. "I am not a leader, I am among the people. You are the crowd of leaders. Memorise the name. We have a responsibility from now one. This is not a one day thing. It is going to be a way of life," Haasan said. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was also present at the meeting where the actor said he is "going to create a people's government" amid much fanfare. He also launched the party's website as well as Twitter and Facebook pages which have already become active. In perhaps an indication of where the party will stand on language politics, the website spelled the name of the state as 'Thamizh Nadu'. That is significant since it is a departure from the formal spelling of 'Tamil Nadu', and underlines the syllable considered unique to the Tamil language, which is usually rendered in English as 'zh'.
