Shiv Sena's friendship with BJP is unbreakable: Uddhav Thackeray

A report on equitable water distribution across Mumbai has been prepared and the Maharashtra government will ask the city civic body to implement it, Minister of State for Urban Development Yogesh Sagar said on Thursday.

He was responding to a question raised by NCP member Rahul Narvekar through a Calling Attention notice in the state Legislative Council.

"A comprehensive report on equitable water distribution for Mumbai city and its suburban areas is ready. The report will be shared with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) soon and the civic body will be asked to implement it," Sagar said in the House.

To another question, he said people living on forest land in Mumbai for years were not getting adequate drinking water supply, but the government will soon ensure it for them.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in 2016 announced setting up a committee to ensure equitable water distribution for the region coming under jurisdiction of the BMC.

The Mumbai civic body loses around 25 to 27 per cent water due to leakages, Sagar noted.

"The government is trying hard to minimise such losses so that it can cater to the growing drinking water demand," he said.

Sagar said though the number of city's permanent residents is limited, its floating population (those who keep moving from place to place) puts a lot of pressure on the administration.

"It is necessary to supply 270 litre of water per person in city areas, mainly due to the pressure of the floating population," the minister said

Opposition Tuesday staged a walk-out in both Houses of Maharashtra legislature, alleging that the state's budget for 2019-20 was "leaked" on the Twitter handle of Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar before he presented it in the Assembly.

This was an "insult" of legislators, the opposition members said and demanded an apology from Mungantiwar and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis over it.

"We were in power for 15 years, but the budget never got leaked. Now the budget provisions were being put out on the finance minister's Twitter account along with advertisement even before he read out those to us," NCP MLA Ajit Pawar told reporters.

"That means the team handling the minister's Twitter account had the details. This means the budget got leaked to them first. This is an insult of the members. Both Mungantiwar and Fadnavis should apologise," the former state finance minister said.

Congress MLA and former chief minister Prithviraj Chavan seconded Pawar. "In other countries, the finance minister would have resigned had the budget got leaked," he said.

Leader of Opposition in the Council Dhananjay Munde (NCP) said both Mungantiwar and Minister of State for Finance Deepak Kesarkar should resign.

Opposition legislators from both Houses staged a protest against the "leak" on the premises of the legislature complex.

The budget was presented simultaneously by Mungantiwar and Kesarkar in the Assembly and Council, respectively.

When Kesarkar rose to present the budget in the Upper House, Munde waved his mobile phone and read out from it some budget details which he claimed were posted on Mungantiwar's Twitter account.

Following a ruckus over the issue, Council Chairman Ramraje Naik Nimbalkar adjourned the House for 10 minutes.

When the proceedings resumed, revenue minister Chandrakant Patil of the BJP, who is the leader of the House, said he would move a no-confidence motion against Nimbalkar, saying "we have come to the conclusion that the House chairman cannot protect our rights".

Speaking to reporters outside, Ajit Pawar said the opposition expected the government to shower promises in the budget as the state Assembly polls are around the corner.

"But when it comes to implementing the promises, they will cite the election code of conduct," he said.

"Eight to 10 more leaders will leave the Congress party to join the BJP. They are unhappy with the party leadership," Sattar told ANI.

A 26-year-old female doctor allegedly committed suicide on May 22 in the premises of a government-run hospital in India’s Western State of Maharashtra.&nbsp;

Payal Tadvi’s body was found hanging in the doctor’s hostel where she stayed as a trainee resident doctor. It is being alleged by the girl’s family that Payal was constantly being harassed with casteist slurs by her senior colleagues.

Following the death of the tribal doctor, the family and the tribal welfare societies have decided to protest near the Nair hospital in Mumbai Central, against the hospital administration and slow pace of investigation by police in this case. However, police has booked three of Payal’s colleagues who allegedly harassed her for being a tribal woman.

Mother of the victim, Abeda Tadvi claims that her daughter’s complaints were ignored by the hospital administration and the lecturers of the Topiwala national medical college.

Payal was pursuing her post-graduation course in gynaecology at the Topiwala National Medical College, which is attached to the BYL Nair hospital. Her family informs that in December 2018, she informed them about the relentless harassment by her seniors. Payal’s husband Dr Salman also complained to the department head about the harassment, however, no strict action was taken. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis seems to have played his part well as a BJP chieftain in ensuring his party's victory in the Lok Sabha elections.

Fadnavis is being credited for holding the BJP fort at a time when Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) led by AIMIM and Prakash Ambedkar has added a third dimension to the high-stake contest between the NDA and the Congress-NCP combine in Maharashtra.

The BJP's poll strategy ensured that the saffron party retain its 2014 tally of 23 seats despite latent anti-incumbency and drought.

The results will further strengthen Fadnavis' hand as the state faces the crucial Assembly elections in September-October this year.

In 2019 general elections, the NDA won 41 of total 48 seats, which is a replay of its 2014 performance.

While the BJP won 23 seats with a vote share of 27.59%, the Sena bagged 18 seats with a vote share of 23.29%.

The NDA has won 41 out of total 48 seats in the state.

Fadnavis, 48, who became chief minister in October 2014, is set to complete a full term in office, which is rare in Maharashtra's political history.

"Fadnavis had addressed 97 rallies in the state during the Lok Sabha campaigning. The morale of BJP workers is high and we expect to replicate our performance in the assembly polls under Fadnavis's leadership," said state BJP spokesperson Madhav Bhandari.

Fadnavis faced hostile Shiv Sena, which often took swipes at the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in the last five years, but he handled the situation deftly till the Sena came on board.

According to BJP sources, Fadnavis smartly handed Palghar constituency, which was won by the BJP in a 2018 bypoll, to the Sena which fielded BJP MP Rajendra Gavit on its ticket. Gavit went on to win the election again.

To take on NCP chief Sharad Pawar, Fadnavis exploited dissensions within his party to induct Ranjitsinh Mohite Patil into the BJP, they said.

Mohite Patil's father Vijaysinh Mohite Patil, who was the MP from Madha in the 16th Lok Sabha, was reportedly piqued over reports that Pawar might contest from Madha. However, Pawar never contested.

The BJP then inducted Satara district Congress president Ranjit Nimbalkar into the party and fielded him from Madha. Nimbalkar snatched the seat from the NCP.

Fadanvis also delivered a blow to the Congress by inducting Sujay, son of former Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, and fielded him from Ahmednagar.

Pawar had refused to cede the seat to the Congress for Vikhe Patil's sake while recalling his old rivalry with Sujay's grand father, late Balasaheb Vikhe Patil.

At a poll rally in Ahmednagar, Fadnavis described the move to field Sujay on BJP ticket as a "surgical strike" on the Congress.

He said that 1,162 ballot units, 732 control units and 2,467 VVPAT machines had to be changed during the fourth phase polls in the city Monday.

The 17 seats were spread across Mumbai metropolitan region and parts of northern and western Maharashtra, having 3.11 crore voters and 323 candidates.

The state Congress made 30 complaints to the Election Commission about alleged glitches in EVMs across the 17 Lok Sabha constituencies. Maharashtra has over 1.19 crore voters who fall in the age group of 18-19 years and was eligible to exercise their franchise in the Lok Sabha polls for the first time. Balloons and colourful rangolis welcomed voters at some of the polling booths across the 17 constituencies. As part of an initiative by the Election Commission of India to make polling a pleasant experience, certain booths were selected in every Lok Sabha constituency for decoration. Police personnel posted at polling booths across Mumbai earned kudos for lending a helping hand to senior citizens and differently-abled people to cast their votes in the six Lok Sabha constituencies in the city and suburbs that went to polls.
