About 300 homes were evacuated as a fast-moving wildfire burned through some 11,000 acres (4,450 hectares) of parched land northwest of Los Angeleson Staurday, the County of Los Angeles Fire Department said.

There has been one minor injury to a firefighter, and as of Saturday morning no structures were destroyed, the department said. No deaths have been reported.

The "Sand Fire" broke out on Friday afternoon and spread quickly near Santa Clarita, about 40 miles (65 km) northwest of the city. It has nearly tripled in size in less than a day and was only 10 per cent contained.

Some 300 firefighters in temperatures expected to hit highs of 106 degrees Fahrenheit (41.1°C) were battling the wildfire. Nearly 30 helicopters and eight fixed-winged aircraft have been deployed to try and stop the spreading blaze that is burning through chaparral and brush, according to the InciWeb site that tracks wildfires.

Evacuation shelters have been set up for residents in the area and about 10 roads have been closed due to the fire.

The fire is one of a series that have hit the drought-stricken state this summer, where dried grass and bush land as well as high temperatures in the region have helped fuel the blazes.

Led Zeppelin prevailed on Thursday in a copyright lawsuit brought against surviving members of the British rock band, as jurors rejected a claim that the opening guitar passage from its classic hit "Stairway to Heaven" was lifted from the lesser-known US band Spirit.

The jury's verdict, which found substantial differences between "Stairway to Heaven" and Spirit's instrumental track "Taurus," followed a week-long federal court trial in Los Angeles that had called into question the originality of the 1971 song by Led Zeppelin, one of the top-selling rock acts of all time.

Legal experts said the unanimous verdict, reached on the jury's second day of deliberations, could narrow the grounds on which future copyright infringement challenges are brought in the music industry.

The jury found Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant and guitarist Jimmy Page had access to "Taurus," a song written in 1967, but that the riff they were accused of stealing was not intrinsically similar to the opening chords of "Stairway."

Page, 72, and Plant, 67, who testified and were present throughout the closely watched trial, showed little immediate reaction to the verdict in court.

"We are grateful for the jury's conscientious service and pleased that it has ruled in our favor, putting to rest questions about the origins of 'Stairway to Heaven' and confirming what we have known for 45 years," Page and Plant said in a joint statement.

Led Zeppelin bassist-keyboardist John Paul Jones also took the stand during the trial. Originally sued along with Page and Plant, he was later dismissed as a defendant. The band's drummer, John Bonham, died in 1980, the year the group disbanded.

The conclusion of the "Stairway" case comes just over a year after a federal jury in Los Angeles found singers Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams had plagiarized Motown great Marvin Gaye in creating their hit single "Blurred Lines."

A jury awarded Gaye's family $7.4 million, but a judge later reduced the amount to $5.3 million. That verdict is under appeal.

While the "Blurred Lines" case might have bolstered hopes of other artists suing for copyright infringement, Led Zeppelin's victory may cause musicians and attorneys to think twice before heading to court, said music industry attorney William Hochberg.

"This decision created a sharper, clearer line in terms of what is protectable and what is not in music," Hochberg said.

Page, who co-wrote "Stairway to Heaven" with Plant and composed the guitar riff in question, testified he had not heard "Taurus" until recent years.

He acknowledged owning a copy of Spirit's self-titled album including "Taurus" but did not know how he had acquired it.

Michael Skidmore, trustee for the estate of the late Randy Wolfe, the Spirit guitarist and "Taurus" songwriter who was known as Randy California, sued in 2014 over the "Taurus" chord progression.

Led Zeppelin was the opening act for the now-defunct US band on tour in the United States in 1968, the lawsuit said.

Skidmore's attorney, Francis Malofiy, said after the ruling that his side was hamstrung by US District Judge R. Gary Klausner's order preventing jurors from listening to Spirit's recording of "Taurus."

Instead, jurors could only compare simple renditions of the sheet music for the two songs.

"We're taking it one step at a time, but there's obviously issues that can be appealed," Malofiy said.

Led Zeppelin did not steal Stairway to Heaven, finds jury

Actor Mark Salling, who had a supporting role as a high school athlete-turned-singer in the TV series "Glee," was indicted on Friday on charges of receiving and possessing child pornography, officials said.

The 33-year-old Salling agreed to turn himself in on June 3 to face the charges filed in federal court in Los Angeles, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the region said in a statement.

Representatives for Salling, a Los Angeles resident, and his attorney, did not immediately return calls.

The federal charges against the Texas-born Salling for receipt and possession of child pornography stem from his arrest by Los Angeles police and federal agents on Dec. 29, 2015. He was released on bail of $20,000 and was initially expected to be charged in Los Angeles County court.

But after investigators realized the "scope of the collection" of child porn they had uncovered, the case was handed over to federal prosecutors, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.

"The traditional stereotype about the kinds of people who commit child sexual exploitation crimes simply doesn't dovetail with reality," Joseph Macias, a special agent in charge for the Department of Homeland Security, said in a statement on the filing of the charges.

Macias added that child pornography suspects can be of "all ages and from all walks of life."

Salling's arrest came after investigators received a tip that he was in possession of child porn, Los Angeles police said in a statement at the time.

A laptop, a hard drive and a mobile flash drive from Salling's home contained thousands of images and videos of child pornography, and investigators continue to review the material, federal prosecutors said.

In the meantime, the charges against the actor center on a still image and three videos of child pornography depicting young girls, the statement said. The two charges each carry a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison.

Salling on the Fox television show "Glee," which ran from 2009 to 2015, played Puck, a bully and a football player who shows a softer side when he joins the glee club at his high school.

Before that show, Salling had a number of smaller roles, including a part in 1996 horror film "Children of the Corn IV: The Gathering."

Actor Michael Jace, best known for his role as a policeman on the TV drama "The Shield," was convicted by a jury on Tuesday of second-degree murder for fatally shooting his wife in 2014 in front of the couple's two children at their Los Angeles home.

Jace, 53, faces a sentence of 40 years to life in prison when he is sentenced on June 10.

The actor was upset that his wife, April Jace, wanted a divorce when he shot her once in the back and twice more in the legs on May 19, 2014, the Los Angeles County District Attorney`s Office said in a statement.

He then called authorities and reported that he had shot his wife, prosecutors said. The couple`s sons, ages 8 and 5 at the time, watched the killing in the family`s South Los Angeles home, prosecutors said. She was 40 years old when she was slain.

Prosecutors had asked jurors to find Jace guilty of first-degree murder, which involves premeditation, Los Angeles County District Attorney`s Office spokesman Greg Risling said. But the jury in Los Angeles Superior Court instead found Jace guilty of second-degree murder, an intentional killing that was not premeditated.

Jace`s attorneys acknowledged in court that he shot his wife.

"Our entire goal was to show this was not a case of premeditation, and we achieved that goal," Jace`s attorney, Jamon Hicks, said in an email. "This was a very smart and intelligent jury who deliberated and considered the evidence. They were not just moved by emotion but by the evidence."

The jury of six women and six men began deliberations late on Friday and resumed on Tuesday morning, spending two hours considering the case before reaching the verdict, prosecutors said.

The jury found Jace used a handgun in the crime, a special circumstance that increases his minimum prison time by 25 years beyond the minimum term for second-degree murder, Risling said.

Jace is best known for portraying police officer Julien Lowe, a religious Christian conflicted about his homosexuality, on the FX cable drama "The Shield" that ran from 2002 to 2008.

Aside from "The Shield," Jace had small parts in the films "Forrest Gump," "Boogie Nights" and "Planet of the Apes" as well as various supporting roles on television in the past two decades. He filed for Chapter 13 bankruptcy protection in 2011.
