Venezuela is also set to hold its Pride march in the capital, Caracas, on Sunday, with hundreds of people expected to join.&nbsp;

Notably, Salomon was in the top six of Miss International Queen, the world’s largest beauty pageant for transgender women. “I would like that law changed so transgender women could be accepted with the name they feel safer,” said the Venezuelan influencer at the time, addressing a lawsuit.&nbsp;

While her entry is yet to be confirmed by the Miss Venezuela organisation, Salomon believes she has an advantage over other contestants. “I am of the opinion that experience is not improvised,” said Salomon. She added, “That is why people trust that I will make history in the country.”

She also spoke about the overwhelming support she has received from her parents, siblings and boyfriend, as well as comments and emojis on her Instagram posts about her decision to apply for Miss Venezuela.&nbsp;

<h2>Venezuela’s LGBTQ+ community</h2>

The nearly decade-long lawsuit in question, which Salomon spoke about, was a case involving Tamara Adrian, a transgender woman who wanted to legally change her name and sex on her birth certificate and in public records, which the government said the law already allows.&nbsp;

However, Adrian and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights argued that was not the case and despite over 30 briefs filed and repeated request hearings, her case was overlooked. She went on to become the first trans lawmaker in the South American country, in 2015, representing a district in Caracas.

Earlier this year, Venezuela’s top court revoked a law which punishes consensual same-sex conduct by military personnel. However, the decision to give same-sex couples the right to marry has been held off in the courts for some seven years now.&nbsp;

According to the activist-run Venezuelan Observatory on LGBTIQ+ Violence, an initiative backed by Amnesty International Venezuela, there were nearly 100 cases of violence against members of the community across the country last year, including 11 homicides.&nbsp;

However, the number is said to be higher since many cases are not reported. LGBTQ+ people in Venezuela “suffer numerous forms of discrimination and violence, from the family sphere to public spaces,” said Yendri Velasquez, co-founder of the activist-run initiative. He also noted that in 2021 there were 21 murders of people “just for being gay or lesbian.”

Transgender woman Sofia Salomon challenges norms, applies to compete in Miss Venezuela pageant

In a significant legal victory for transgender rights, US District Judge Robert Hinkle on Wednesday (June 21) struck down a Florida rule and statute that prohibited state Medicaid payments for transgender healthcare. This marks the second defeat in two weeks for anti-transgender legislation in Florida.&nbsp;

<h2>What the judge said</h2>

Judge Hinkle declared the state's practices invalid, stating that they violated the constitutional right to equal protection under the 14th Amendment, as well as the federal Medicaid statute and the Affordable Care Act's prohibition of sex discrimination.

The ruling, as per Reuters, was not unexpected. Judge Hinkle had already issued a partial block on Florida's ban on gender-affirming care for individuals under 18 on June 6.&nbsp;

In his 54-page ruling, Judge Hinkle emphasised the reality of gender identity. He said that those who oppose transgender existence "tend to disapprove all things transgender and so oppose medical care that supports a person's transgender existence."

He also noted that gender identity is a real aspect of a person's life.

"The elephant in the room should be noted at the outset. Gender identity is real. The record makes this clear," he wrote in his ruling.

<h2>Anti-trans laws and the United States</h2>

Similar laws banning gender-affirming care have been blocked by district court judges in other states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, and Oklahoma.

According to the Human Rights Campaign, Republican lawmakers have however introduced over 500 bills restricting LGBTQ rights during the past legislative year, with more than 70 of them passing into law.&nbsp;

So far, 20 states have enacted laws banning gender-affirming care for minors. The sponsors of these laws claim that they aim to protect children who may be misled by parents and doctors and later regret their gender transition.

<h2>Who was behind the lawsuit?</h2>

The plaintiffs in the case included two transgender adults, August Dekker and Brit Rothstein, as well as two transgender minors who filed under pseudonyms.&nbsp;

On the opposing side was the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) and its secretary, Jason Weida.

<h2>What is Medicaid?</h2>

Medicaid, as per the US Department of Health and Human Services, &nbsp;is a joint federal and state programme that helps cover medical costs for some people with limited income and resources.

The AHCA had initially approved Medicaid payments for gender-affirming care, but in 2022, Governor Ron DeSantis ordered the agency to conduct a new analysis, which led to a reversal of the decision.&nbsp;

Judge Henkin found that the subsequent process was biased and aimed at justifying a predetermined outcome, rather than conducting a fair analysis of the evidence.&nbsp;As per him, the AHCA "retained only consultants known in advance for their staunch opposition to gender-affirming care."&nbsp;

Federal judge upholds transgender rights, strikes down Florida's Medicaid ban on healthcare

The Riigikogu or Estonian parliament, on Tuesday (June 20) approved a new law to legalise same-sex marriage, becoming the first Baltic nation to do so. This comes months after the incumbent Prime Minister Kaja Kallas’ liberal coalition government took office and nine years after the country recognised same-sex civil unions.&nbsp; 
 
The vote also makes&nbsp;Estonia the second central European country to pass laws legalising same-sex marriage, after Slovenia which passed&nbsp;an amendment allowing same-sex couples to marry and adopt&nbsp;last year.&nbsp;

<h2>What happened during the vote?</h2>

The vote on a marriage equality bill took place in Estonia’s parliament and passed with a majority of 55 votes in the 101-seat parliament with 34 votes against it. This came months after PM Kallas’ coalition of liberal and social democratic parties garnered a majority in the parliament back in March.&nbsp; 
 
Additionally, the incumbent&nbsp;government also survived a vote of no confidence that was tied to the amendments. While&nbsp;Estonia introduced same-sex civil unions back in 2014, it did not recognise&nbsp;adoption rights or&nbsp;parental recognition which comes with&nbsp;marriage. 
 
According to reports, there will be some 85&nbsp;amendments to the country's Family Law Act, while&nbsp;another legislation was&nbsp;introduced which would include&nbsp;same-sex marriage contracts. Additionally,&nbsp;words in the Family Law Act&nbsp;will also&nbsp;now be modified from&nbsp;"man and woman" to "two natural persons."&nbsp;

The law will come into effect&nbsp;in 2024. Notably, while same-sex marriage is legal in most countries across Western Europe that is not the case with former Soviet nations in central Europe. “My message (to central Europe) is that it’s a difficult fight, but marriage and love is something that you have to promote,” PM Kallas told Reuters, after the vote.&nbsp;

She added, “We have developed a lot in those 30 years since we have freed ourselves from the (Soviet) occupation. We are equals among same-value countries.” Meanwhile, two other Baltic nations, Latvia and Lithuania, have introduced bills to legalise same-sex marriage in their parliaments but are yet to move forward with any decision. &nbsp;

<h2>LGBTQ+ people in Estonia</h2>

According to the Estonian Human Rights Centre, attitudes towards LGBTQ+ people have changed dramatically since 2012. In the Baltic nation with 1.3 million people, at least 53 per cent of people supported same-sex marriage in a poll conducted by the rights centre&nbsp;earlier this year. Notably, the number was up from 34 per cent back in 2021 and also six per cent higher than last year.&nbsp;

However, nearly 40 per cent of Estonians still consider homosexuality unacceptable. The poll also showed that same-sex marriage was opposed by the country’s ethnic-Russian minority which makes up a quarter of the country’s population with less than half (40 per cent) supporting it.

The Ukraine war factor?</h2>

In an interview with the country’s broadcaster LRT, the president of Estonia’s parliament, Lauri Hussar suggested that the change in attitude towards the LGBTQ+ people can also be attributed to the war in Ukraine.&nbsp;

“I think the mood has changed also, because of what happened in Ukraine, because the war brought us to the real problems and what is really important for us,” said Hussar, as quoted by Euronews.&nbsp;

Judge Robert Hinkle from the Federal District Court in Tallahassee made the ruling, allowing three transgender minors in the state to receive puberty blockers.&nbsp;

Hinkle, as per an AFP report, made this decision in response to a lawsuit filed by the parents of these individuals against state officials.

The lawsuit claims that 56 per cent of transgender youth have reported at least one previous suicide attempt, while 86 per cent reported they were still suicidal.

However, Tuesday's ruling only applies to puberty blockers and does not impact other components of the law enacted by Florida's Republican governor, Ron DeSantis, last month. The law includes the prohibition of gender reassignment surgery for minors and the restriction on public funding for the treatment of gender dysphoria.

<h2>What are puberty blockers?&nbsp;</h2>

Puberty blockers, also known as hormone suppressors, are utilised in teens exploring gender transition to delay the onset of unwanted physical changes like puberty.&nbsp;

Advocates of gender-affirming care argue that these treatments are effective for individuals experiencing gender dysphoria, a condition where one's gender identity does not align with their biological sex, causing distress.

The condition is recognised by the American Psychiatric Association, and it is known to cause anxiety, depression and self-harm.&nbsp;

<h2>Transgender rights and the US</h2>

The issue of transgender rights has increasingly become a contentious topic in US politics. As per AFP, around a dozen Republican-controlled states have implemented limitations and regulations similar to Florida.

Democrats argue that these actions encroach upon fundamental rights and express concern over the restrictive measures being imposed.

As per a June 2022 report by Pew Research, roughly eight in 10 adults in the nation acknowledge that trans people witness some kind of discrimination. A majority favour laws protecting transgender individuals from discrimination in jobs, housing and public spaces.

However, the same report shows that 60 per cent of people believe that a person's gender is determined by their sex assigned at birth. In 2021, this number stood at 56 per cent, four years earlier, in 2017, at 54 per cent.

The bill comes months after a South Korean court delivered a landmark ruling which recognised the rights of same-sex couples in the country.&nbsp;

<h2>What is the proposed marriage equality bill?</h2>

The marriage equality bill has been proposed by a lawmaker from the minor opposition Justice party’s Jang Hye-yeong and co-sponsored by 12 lawmakers across all the main parties. “Family is the most basic unit that forms a larger community called society,” said Jang, at the National Assembly on Wednesday, as quoted by The Guardian.&nbsp;

Notably, South Korea does not recognise same-sex civil partnerships, but their constitution stipulates that marriage and family shall be established “on the basis of individual dignity and equality of the sexes”. Furthermore, same-sex relations are not criminalised in South Korea but reports suggest that LGBTQ people tend to live under the radar.&nbsp;

Therefore, rights activists in the country have long called for legislation against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, but the anti-discrimination law has not been passed due to a lack of consensus among lawmakers.&nbsp;

A lawyer at the Marriage Equality Korea civic group, told the Guardian, “It’s a historic moment, but this is just the start,” and called for the bills to be discussed in the assembly “ immediately.” However, the efforts to pass such legislation including the anti-discrimination law have reportedly been opposed by religious groups that claim such moves would “legalise homosexuality”.&nbsp;

According to a Hankook Research survey, 52 per cent of respondents were against the legalisation of same-sex marriage in South Korea. However, Jang told the United Kingdom-based newspaper, that enacting such laws is a part of the process of achieving social consensus in a democratic society.&nbsp;

Earlier this year, the High Court in South Korea ruled in favour of a gay couple, So Seong-wook and Kim Yong-min, when they sued South Korea’s National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) in 2021.&nbsp; 
 
This came after the insurance service terminated benefits for his partner, Kim whom So had registered as a dependent, after the officials found out they were a gay couple. So and Kim couple had been living together and got married in 2019, but it held no legal validity since the country does not recognise same-sex marriage.&nbsp;

At the time, the high court had acknowledged that it is difficult to recognise same-sex marriage under the country’s current common law. However, “those in same-sex marriage are fundamentally identical to those in a common-law marriage, except that they are homosexual,” said the court, as per the Yonhap News Agency.&nbsp;

It added that considering they form “the highly identical union” the withdrawal of the insurance coverage “constitutes discrimination based on sexual orientation” which is also against the state health insurance benefits.&nbsp;

<h2>What is the new law about?</h2>

The bill, Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023, which was recently signed into law, was introduced in Uganda’s parliament&nbsp;earlier this year. The death penalty for “aggravated homosexuality” includes sex with a minor, people who are HIV positive, and incest.&nbsp;

Additionally, anyone engaging in gay sex, if convicted, could face life imprisonment and a person caught trying to commit same-sex acts could face up to 10 years in prison. The law also stipulates a 20-year sentence for anyone “promoting” homosexuality.&nbsp;

It also calls for what it terms “rehabilitation” for gay offenders which could hint at the widely discredited conversion therapy. Meanwhile, a minor convicted of an offence involving same-sex relations can be imprisoned for not more than three years.&nbsp;

If legal entities, such as media and non-governmental organisations (NGOs), are found “knowingly” promoting homosexuality, they will be fined and also face potential suspension.&nbsp;

<h2>Museveni has ‘answered the cries of our people’</h2>

The announcement of the signing of the bill was made by Ugandan Parliament Speaker Anita Annet Among who said Museveni has “answered the cries of our people.” She also took to Twitter and wrote, “I thank His Excellency, the president, for his steadfast action in the interest of Uganda.”

She added, “With a lot of humility, I thank my colleagues the Members of Parliament for withstanding all the pressure from bullies and doomsday conspiracy theorists in the interest of the country.”&nbsp;

In a joint statement, on Monday, PEPFAR, the US flagship HIV/AIDS programme and leaders of the UNAIDS programme, said that the law will put Uganda’s anti-HIV fight “in grave jeopardy,” and that they were “deeply concerned about the harmful impact” of the legislation on public health.&nbsp;

The statement also noted that the "stigma and discrimination associated with the passage of the Act have already led to reduced access to prevention as well as treatment services"&nbsp;for LGBTQ people, and it will “obstruct health education and the outreach that can help end AIDS as a public health threat.”

“Our data shows that this law runs counter to the interests of economic progress and prosperity of all people in Uganda,” said Dominic Arnall, chief executive for Open For Business, a coalition of companies which includes tech giants like Google and Microsoft. He also said that the group was deeply disappointed by the signing of the bill.&nbsp;

He added, "I join with people around the world - including many in Uganda - in calling for its immediate repeal." Biden&nbsp;also said that they are considering steps like additional sanctions&nbsp;and restriction of entry into the US "against anyone involved in serious human rights abuses or corruption".&nbsp;

United Kingdom government&nbsp;'appalled'

The&nbsp;British government said that they were "appalled" at the Ugandan government's new law. Andrew Mitchell, a minister in the foreign office department&nbsp;said it "undermines the protections and freedoms of all Ugandans enshrined in the Ugandan Constitution".&nbsp; 
 
He also went on to describe the law "deeply discriminatory" and said it would "increase the risk of violence, discrimination and persecution, will set back the fight against HIV/AIDs, and will damage Uganda’s international reputation".&nbsp;

<h2>‘A dark day’ for LGBTQ community in Uganda</h2>

According to media reports, there is fear among Uganda’s LGBTQ community as many have closed down social media accounts and fled homes, while some are even planning to move abroad. Henry Mukiibi, an activist who assists LGBTQ Ugandans, told CNN that he is afraid of people taking the law into their own hands.&nbsp;

“I think this is so so horrible. We didn’t expect this – we thought he would be advised against it. We are going to be tortured. I am just scared now about what is next,” Mukiibi told CNN. He added, “People have been waiting for the bill to be signed and then they will work on us. We are going to die.”&nbsp;

“It’s a very dark and sad day for the LGBTIQ community, our allies and all of Uganda,” said Clare Byarugaba, a Ugandan rights activist, as per Reuters, after the bill was signed.&nbsp;

Africa's deputy director for Human Rights Watch,&nbsp;Ashwanee Budoo-Scholtz,&nbsp;told AFP that the legislation&nbsp;was “discriminatory and is a step in the wrong direction for the protection of human rights for all people in Uganda”.&nbsp;

Homosexuality is criminalised in more than 30 of Africa’s 54 countries as some people supposedly view it as a behaviour imported from abroad. There are also fears that this legislation could encourage lawmakers in neighbouring Kenya and Tanzania to take similar steps.&nbsp; 
 
After the law was signed, a Kenyan Member of&nbsp;Parliament, George Kaluma,&nbsp;said, "Wow! What a leader we've in Africa! Congratulations Uganda! Kenya is following you in this endeavour to save humanity ... Perversion is treated, not normalized!"&nbsp;

The 78-year-old leader was seen signing the bill at his desk with a golden pen and has previously called homosexuality a “deviation from normal”. He also urged lawmakers to resist “imperialist” pressure amid international condemnation of the bill. Notably, a similar less restrictive anti-LGBTQ law was struck down by a court on procedural grounds.&nbsp;

Rights activists have the option of appealing the legislation before the constitutional court. The 2014 anti-LGBTQ law was also struck down by a domestic court&nbsp;after some countries in the West had taken measures including suspension of aid, imposed visa restrictions and curtailed security cooperation.

The civil society in Uganda, with the LGBTQ community, is ready to take this to the courts and challenge the law, Nicholas Opiyo, a prominent human rights lawyer told CNN. “Because this law is a deeply discriminatory and repressive law that doesn’t meet any international human rights and local standards.”&nbsp;

Trudeau's comment left Meloni visibly bristling and annoyed. Later, after the closed-door meeting, while talking to reporters, she accused the Canadian prime minister of being a "victim of fake news" and even said he was a "bit rash" in his comments.&nbsp;

Speaking in Italian, Meloni also said that after their talks he now probably understood that what gets written about her doesn't correspond to her reality.&nbsp;

As per a statement released by Justin Trudeau's office, the Canadian prime minister&nbsp;also raised his concerns about LGBTQ rights in Italy during the meeting. The statement added that the Italian prime minister had defended her government's position and stated that they were following court rulings related to LGBTQ matters.

While speaking to the press, Meloni pointed out that she hasn't changed any existing legislation on LGBTQ issues in Italy.

In March, Meloni's far-right-led government ordered city councils to stop the official recording of both parents in same-sex couples. Instead, they were instructed to only acknowledge the biological parent.

The move was denounced by gay rights activists as "homophobic". Speaking at the time, Alessia Crocini, the president of Rainbow Families, a non-profit organisation "supporting LGBTQ+ parents and their children",&nbsp;said the move exposed the Meloni government's homophobia.

"This government is the maximum expression of homophobia."

"Meloni says that for a child to grow up well, they need a mother and father, even if decades of research say otherwise. It is insulting to hundreds of thousands of families with two same-sex parents," she said.

Italy's law doesn't recognise same-sex parents and Meloni has previously stated that every child is entitled to a mother and a father.

She also remarked that people identifying with a gender other than what was assigned to them at birth are victims of ideology. In a magazine interview in March, the Italian prime minister said "Being a man or a woman is rooted in who we are, and can’t be changed."

He also signed a bill extending the state’s controversial “don’t say gay” law, which will now prohibit any classroom instruction regarding sexual orientation or gender identity through eighth grade.

In his statement, DeSantis pointed out that “It’s kind of sad that we even have some of these discussions, Let Kids Be Kids.” He further added that “We never did this through all of human history until like, what, two weeks ago? They’re having third-graders declare pronouns? We’re not doing the pronoun Olympics in Florida.”

Uganda’s parliament passed a law that criminalises identifying as LGBTQ. More than 30 African countries, including Uganda, already ban same-sex relations. The new law appears to be the first to outlaw merely identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ), according to rights group Human Rights Watch.

An earlier decision by a lower court had ruled in favour of the insurer. The ruling, as per Reuters, was taken on the grounds that a same-sex union cannot be considered a common law marriage under common law. Yong-min and Sung-wook then contested this ruling.

As per their lawyer, Ryu Min-hee, the appellate court in its ruling said that the spousal coverage system under the state health insurance system isn't just for families as defined by the law.&nbsp;

The court also said that denying rights to same-sex relationships was discrimination and that protecting the rights of minorities is the "biggest responsibility" of the court as the "last bastion" of human rights.

Boram Jang, an Amnesty International researcher, said that the ruling "is an important decision that moves South Korea closer to achieving marriage equality." As per him, it goes a long way to offer hope that the prejudice against the LGBTQI+ community can be overcome.

As per AFP, the monumental milestone comes as the LGBTQ community has become an increasingly significant voting constituency. Analysts predict that the surge in transgender and gay voters might redraw the electoral landscape over the next generation, "nudging the conservative US heartland in a more liberal direction."

For the November midterms, 1,065 hopefuls ran primary campaigns and a historic 678 successfully made it onto ballots. AFP reports that almost 90 per cent of the LGBTQ candidates who entered this year's primary races belong to the Democrat party.&nbsp;

These bills include the controversial 'Don't Say Gay' bills and the ones seeking to ban transgender children from participating in school sports.

US mid-term elections 2022: In a first, LGBTQ candidates to contest from all 50 states

On Tuesday, the system to register same-sex partnerships opened for applications in Japan’s capital city, Tokyo, said local media reports. This step is largely symbolic since it does not offer the legal benefits of marriage to the LGBTQ community in the country but it is welcomed by rights groups as a small step in the right direction nevertheless.&nbsp;

“The introduction of the system in Tokyo is extremely positive…But partnership is not enough. We basically want legal marriage,” said Soshi Matsuoka, the head of Fair, an LGBTQ rights organization in Tokyo, to the local media. Notably, Japan is the only country in the Group of Seven (G7) major democracies that does not allow same-sex marriage or civil unions. However, several polls have reportedly indicated that people are largely in favour of same-sex unions.

According to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s website, the system is open for couples of whom at least one partner lives, works or studies in the country’s capital city. The couple must be at least 18 years old and not already married or in a partnership. The website also indicated that the applications must be online, the certificates for which will be available from November 1.&nbsp;

Local government partnership certification systems have already been introduced in several municipalities across Japan. However, since Tokyo accounts for more than 10% of the country’s population (125 million) its change in policies has a larger impact, said media reports.&nbsp;

Japan has an ageing as well as a shrinking population and the lack of provisions like same-sex marriages, it could adversely affect the country’s ability to compete for talent against dozens of countries who have legalised marriage equality, said industry bodies. However, incumbent Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, leader of the conservative, Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has reportedly urged caution on the issue.&nbsp;

While the general public attitudes have been increasingly positive in recent years, some conservative lawmakers are not entirely on board. Earlier this month, an LDP assemblyman in Aichi Prefecture, Noboru Watanabe, was forced to issue an apology following an online post, where he called same-sex marriage “disgusting”, said the local media.&nbsp;

Earlier this year, in March, marked a partial win for the LGBTQ community in the country with a Japanese court ruling that not allowing same-sex couples to get married is “unconstitutional”, which set a precedent for the right in the future.&nbsp;

However, the victory was short-lived as another court in Osaka ruled against the marriage equality right in the month of June. Furthermore, last month in another court ruling the US-national same-sex spouse of a Japanese citizen was refused residency rights and said it was unconstitutional, reported the media, saying that the two had gotten married in the US.&nbsp;

AFP reports that on the 40th anniversary of France's repeal of a statute discriminating against homosexuals from the World War II era, Borne told an audience that the new envoy will coordinate the foreign ministry's policies and serve as "France's voice" for the advancement of LGBTQ rights.

As per her "the battle for the minds is not yet won," and the discrimination against the community "continues to exclude, injure and sometimes even kill" people.

She also acknowledged that "hurtful comments" were made by members of President Emmanuel Macron's government in the past, but assured that no such "ambivalence" exists now. This is believed to be a reference to a 2013 comment by &nbsp;Regional Affairs Minister Caroline Cayeux, who joined the government in a reshuffle last month.

Speaking in the Senate, Cayeux had said that the proposed legalisation of gay marriage was "against nature."&nbsp;Then, in an apparent effort to defend herself, last month she said: "I have to say that I have a lot of friends among those people," the statement once again incited fury.

The ruling by justice Clarence Thomas also allowed a sneak peek into the topics that can be up for debate in the aftermath of this ruling. According to the ruling, he suggested that in the future, the Supreme Court can be looking into issues like contraception access, marriage equality and even LGBTQ rights.

“In future cases, we should reconsider all of this court’s substantive due process precedents, including Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell,” Thomas wrote in his concurring opinion.

In Lawrence v Texas in 2003, the states could not criminalise sodomy while in Griswold v Connecticut in 1965, the Supreme Court ruled that a married couple can exercise their right to use contraception without any government interference. In 2005, Obergefell v Hodges established the right for same-sex couples to marry. These are mainly the cases mentioned by Justice Thomas in his notes.

In a landmark decision that put an end to a six-year legal struggle, Croatia's high administrative court ruled that same-sex couples are eligible to apply for child adoption since any other treatment would be discriminatory and contrary to European tradition.

In 2016, Ivo egota and Marijan Koi applied to adopt a child through a local social centre, but were turned down by a number of institutions, all of which stated that existing Croatian legislation prohibits them from doing so.

The court's decision effectively dismissed an appeal filed by the country's minister of demography, family, and social programmes, which attempted to overturn a similar verdict issued by the Zagreb administrative court in 2021.

"Taking into account the position of the European Court of Human Rights, the Court states that the different treatment of people in similar situations, based exclusively on their sexual orientation, represents a form of discrimination," said the ruling.

Croatia, which joined the European Union in 2013, is a devout Roman Catholic country where the church wields significant power in public life.

Abortion access is becoming increasingly difficult in public hospitals, despite the fact that it is ostensibly provided by law up to 10 weeks of pregnancy, as many doctors refuse to perform it due to conscientious objection.

LGBTQ Rights: Same-sex couples can now adopt children in Croatia

At a time when many states, Republican lawmakers across the United States have been passing laws that as per critics are infringing upon LGBTQ rights, US President Joe Biden’s administration has come up with something no less than a boon.

From Monday citizens in the US can now receive a passport with the gender designation “X”.

This comes as a blessing for over 1.2 million Americans who don’t identify with the traditional gender identities, or whose gender identity falls outside the categories of man or woman.

Ojeda a non-binary person who on Monday became one of the first Americans to apply for a gender-neutral passport, this is "incredible".

On Tuesday, the Florida state senate passed a controversial bill banning lessons on sexual orientation and gender identity in elementary schools, a measure critics say will negatively impact the LGBTQ community.

After passing both chambers of the legislature, the bill goes to Governor Ron DeSantis, who says he supports it.

LGBTQ advocates and opposition Democrats have campaigned against an anti-homophobia law, dubbed "Don't Say&nbsp;Gay," law saying that it will affect kids in kindergarten through third grade when they are 8 to 9 years old.

This bill prohibits teaching about sexual orientation and gender identity "in a manner that is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards."&nbsp;

According to critics, this wording could apply to older children as well.

Republicans counter that teachers and students can actually discuss these issues spontaneously and that the bill only forbids lessons on these topics from being included in school curricula.

In a tweet on Tuesday, US Education Secretary Miguel Cardona criticised the bill: "Leaders in Florida have decided that bills based on hate &amp; discrimination take priority over our students' pandemic recovery."
