<p>The building, which houses nearly 195 labourers from the nearby commercial area, is home to people from the southern Indian states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu as well as from northern India, as per Indian local media reports.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The fire started in a lower-floor kitchen and spread throughout the building. Some individuals died after jumping from the building to escape the flames, while others succumbed to burns and smoke inhalation. Reports said that many of the injured have been taken to Adan, Mubarak and Jaber hospitals.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The building is owned by NBTC group, run by Malayali businessman KG Abraham. Employees of NBTC's supermarket also lived in the building, reports suggested.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Fahad Yusuf Saud Al-Sabah, who oversees the interior and defence ministries, visited the site and expressed his deep concern over the incident.</p>

<p>External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar wrote on X, "Deeply shocked by the news of the fire incident in Kuwait city. There are reportedly over 40 deaths and over 50 have been hospitalized.</p>

<p>"Our Ambassador has gone to the camp. We are awaiting further information. Deepest condolences to the families of those who tragically lost their lives. Wish early and full recovery to those who have been injured. Our Embassy will render the fullest assistance to all concerned in this regard," the minister&nbsp;further wrote.</p>

<p>Sheikh Fahad criticised the real estate owners and attributed the tragedy to their negligence.</p>

<p>"Unfortunately, the greed of real estate owners is what leads to these matters," he stated while highlighting the violations that he believes contributed to the fatal blaze.</p>

<p>The blaze was reported at 6:00 am&nbsp;local time (0300 GMT), according to Major General Eid Rashed Hamad.</p>

<p>A senior police commander&nbsp;said to the state TV, "The building in which the fire occurred was used to house workers, and there was a large number of workers there. Dozens were rescued, but unfortunately, there were many deaths as a result of inhaling smoke from the fire."</p>

<p>He also stressed&nbsp;the long-standing issue of overcrowded worker accommodations.</p>

<p>The country, which is home to 4.2 million people and is also one of the wealthiest in the world on a per capita basis, is typically seen as one of the more democratic Gulf monarchies as elected officials also hold some real power.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, Kuwait has reportedly witnessed a rise in domestic political turmoil as the assembly and the appointed government have been in a deadlock for decades which has led to cabinet reshuffles and dissolutions of parliament.&nbsp;</p>

Kuwait launches first-ever Hindi language radio programme, India lauds the move

<p>"They have been sailing non-stop for 12 days. When we saw them, they hadn't eaten in three to four days as they ran out of ration. We have not found anything suspicious yet, but the boat has been safely taken away near the Taj Hotel," an official told India Today.</p>

<p>A case has been filed against the trio under section 3 (a) of the Passport (Entry into India) Rules, with additional penal provisions outlined in section 6 (a), for failure to comply with the necessary procedures for entering India, the official stated.</p>

<p>Born in 1937, Sheikh Nawaf was the fifth son of Kuwait's late ruler from 1921 to 1950 Sheikh Ahmad al-Jaber Al-Sabah.</p>

<p>He began his political career at the age of 25 as governor of Hawalli province, where he remained until 1978 when he started a decade as interior minister.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Several of them were reportedly working in the same Kuwait clinic for the past three to 10 years in the same clinic.</p>

<p>People from Philippines, Egypt and Iran were also caught by the authorities on similar charges, it has been reported.&nbsp;</p>

<h2>What is the decades-long border issue about?</h2>

<p>The talks on Sunday also came after Iraq in 2021, made the final payment of war reparations for the damage inflicted to its neighbour amounting to $52 billion. In August 1990, Saddam’s forces invaded the oil-rich country and annexed it.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Months later, an international coalition led by the United States drove Saddam’s forces out of Kuwait. Since then, both countries have been meeting to solve their border issues but have made very little progress.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The land border between the neighbouring states was established by the United Nations in 1993, years after Iraq under Saddam invaded Kuwait. While the officials in Baghdad have previously expressed readiness to recognise Kuwait’s land border, the maritime border remains a point of contention.</p>

<p>This comes as Iraq says that the delineation should provide it unhindered access to Gulf waters which is said to be a lifeline for its economy as well as oil exports.&nbsp;</p>

Iraq and Kuwait seek to resolve dispute over land, maritime borders decades after Saddam Hussein's invasion

<p>Kuwait on Thursday (July 27) executed five people, including a man convicted of involvement in 2015 Islamic State group suicide bombing that killed 26 people, said the country's public prosecution. Executions are rare in Kuwait as compared to neighbouring Saudi Arabia.</p>

<p>These executions are first since seven people were put to death in November last year ending a five-year moratorium.</p>

<p>Kuwait's Public Prosecution said in a statement that it oversaw "implementation of the death sentence in Kuwait's Central Prison" against five people. Most of them were accused of murder.</p>

<p>Those executed include Abdulrahman Sabah Saud, who was the main convict in 2015 bombing of the Shiite mosque in the capital during Friday prayers. Bombing of the mosque was the bloodiest attack in Kuwait's history.</p>

<p>Saud was a stateless Arab who was convicted of driving the bomber to the mosque and also of bringing the explosives belt he used near the Saudi border.</p>

<p>During the initial trial, Saud pleaded guilty to most charges. However, at the time of appeals, he denied the charges.</p>

<p>Others who were executed on Thursday included a Kuwaiti, an Egyptian and a member of stateless Bidoon minority in Kuwait. A Sri Lankan was also put to death. All of them were convicted of murder.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the Public Prosecution, all five were executed by hanging.</p>

<h2><strong>The bombing case</strong></h2>

<p>The case had initially seen 29 defendants charged. These included seven women. All of them were accused of helping the Saudi mosque bomber.</p>

<p>In the year 2016, Kuwait upheld jail terms handed to eight people. These jail terms were between two and 15 years. More than a dozen people were acquitted.</p>

<p>Those convicted include alleged IS leader in Kuwait, Fahad Farraj Muhareb whose death sentence was commuted to 15 years in prison.</p>

<p>Kuwait introduced the death penalty in the mid-1960s and although the country has executed dozens of people since then, this punishment is relatively rare in the country.</p>

<p>Most of the people who have been condemned have been convicted of murder or drug trafficking.</p>

<p>In April 2013, authorities in Kuwait hanged three men convicted of murder. Just two months later, two Egyptians who were convicted of kidnap and murder were executed.</p>

<p>In 2017, Kuwait carried out mass execution of seven prisoners. This notably, had a ruling family member.</p>

<p>Compared to Kuwait, capital punishment is widespread in regional countries like Iran and Saudi Arabia. AFP reported that 74 people have been put to death this year alone.</p>

<p>"The accident, which occurred on Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street, caused several injuries to a group of Asian cyclists that included Indian expats who were using the main road. The driver of the vehicle initially escaped after running down the cyclists, and surveillance camera footage was being reviewed to find the perpetrator. However, later he turned himself in," the report said.</p>

Indian expats among injured cyclists in Kuwait hit-and-run tragedy

<p><meta name="uuid" content="uuid34WA0EV7Xak2" /><meta charset="utf-8" />The embassies of Kuwait and Jordan were reportedly attacked in Sudan over Monday and Tuesday, as the fighting between the Sudanese Army and Paramilitary forces continued a month after the start of the tensions.</p>

<p>On Tuesday, Kuwait's Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed regret over the raid of the residence of the Kuwaiti embassy's military office and the Jordanian embassy's military office in Khartoum.</p>

<p>“Kuwait condemns the attack on the residence of the head of the military office and [condemns] all forms of violence and sabotage,” the ministry said in a statement.</p>

<p>“The attack is a flagrant violation of international law and the Vienna Convention [on Diplomatic Relations],” it said.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia, which has been mediating talks between Sudan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Jeddah also condemned the attack and said it was closely monitoring the incidents.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Saudi foreign ministry released a statement saying it regretted the attacks and called upon all parties involved to resort to calm and adhere to the outcomes achieved in Jeddah.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>What is happening in Sudan?</strong></h2>

<p>The violent civil war between the Sudanese Army and the paramilitary forces that started last month has led to the death of more than 750 while thousands have been injured.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The two warring factions were allies once as they seized power together in 2021. However, the proposed integration of RSF into the army did not sit well with the former. This led to a power struggle and has since metamorphosed into a full-blown civil war. Khartoum has witnessed the fiercest battles with the fighting spreading across the country as well.</p>

On Tuesday, Kuwait's Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed regret over the raid of the residence of the Kuwaiti embassy's military office and the Jordanian embassy's military office in Khartoum. “Kuwait condemns the attack on the residence of the head of the military office and [condemns] all forms of violence and sabotage,” the ministry said in a statement. “The attack is a flagrant violation of international law and the Vienna Convention [on Diplomatic Relations],” it said. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia, which has been mediating talks between Sudan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Jeddah also condemned the attack and said it was closely monitoring the incidents. The Saudi foreign ministry released a statement saying it regretted the attacks and called upon all parties involved to resort to calm and adhere to the outcomes achieved in Jeddah. The news agency the Associated Press (AP) has been using AI to produce corporate earnings stories since 2014 and has also reportedly used the technology for sports recaps. In 2018, China’s Xinhua news agency created the world’s first AI-powered male news anchor and earlier this year debuted its first AI female news anchor.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>To what extent is AI being used in journalism now?</strong></p>

<p>While these AI-based tools have been around for quite a few years, the cause of concern has seemingly increased recently with the extent to which it is being used. However, most of the journalists who used ChatGPT when it was launched, to write their columns, concluded that the bot was not good enough to take over their jobs yet, reported AFP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, in late 2022, American technology news website CNET took things to the next level when it quietly published dozens of feature articles written entirely by an AI programme. It was not until January this year that the speculations were confirmed by the company, which had called it a mere experiment.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This came after the media outlet began receiving lengthy correction notices for some of these AI-generated stories. While the Associated Press also did use AI for their stories, it is the extent to which it used machine-generated content, as their system is said to be more simplistic. The AP would essentially insert new information into pre-formatted stories as opposed to CNET which created entire feature-length articles.</p>

<p>However, it did not stop there. This year also witnessed the launch of the world’s first news channel whose content is generated entirely by AI called NewsGPT. The platform aims to revolutionise the way that news is delivered by providing unbiased, fact-based news without any hidden agenda, while its CEO, Alan Levy, called it a game changer.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to reports, NewsGPT is powered by machine learning algorithms and natural language processing technology which scans relevant news sources across the world in real-time to create stories which are supposedly accurate, up-to-date, and unbiased. It also claims to be free from the influence of advertisers, political affiliations, or personal opinions.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Use of AI in journalism sparks concerns</strong></p>

<p>As the media ecosystem&nbsp;is going through major changes, it has sparked concerns about how and to what extent AI can be used for journalism, and rightly so. The several cases encountered so far and the gloomy outlook of the future on the subject, disinformation seems to be a running theme.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In an interview with the German-based media outlet DW, media columnist and ombudsperson Pamela Philipose pointed out how there is a very real threat posed by AI and its applications in the newsroom and said, “The more multi-layered problem is the potential AI has to create disinformation by design.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Brandi Geurkink, strategy and technology advisor at Reset, also spoke about how the rapid rise of AI globally has also sparked fears over its potential to spread disinformation and erode trust in mainstream media, reported AFP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A US-based research firm Graphika, in its report, claimed that China has allegedly been using <a href="https://www.wionews.com/videos/china-uses-ai-based-anchors-of-deep-fake-to-push-agenda-disseminate-state-aligned-news-565986">AI-generated deep fakes</a> in first-of-their-kind propaganda videos. They cited the use of a fictitious news outlet called Wolf News, the creation of which has been attributed to Chinese state-aligned personnel by the report.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The “news broadcasters” of the supposed news channel were AI-generated. “This is the first time we’ve seen a state-aligned operation use AI-generated video footage of a fictitious person to create deceptive political content,” the Vice President of Intelligence at Graphika, Jack Stubbs, told AFP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Similar concerns about the ethics of using AI in newsrooms were raised when Kuwait-based media outlet, Kuwait News, introduced their first AI-powered virtual news presenter <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/virtual-news-presenter-generated-using-artificial-intelligence-for-kuwaiti-media-outlet-581243">‘Fedha’</a>. Notably, Kuwait ranked 158 out of 180 countries in the Reporters Without Borders 2022 World Press Freedom Index.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This comes as media professionals have raised concerns about the growing dependence on algorithms and automation, threatening and even undermining the credibility of journalism.&nbsp;<br />

Meanwhile, CNET and sister publication Bankrate, which also used AI-generated content, reportedly disclosed the issues they faced with the accuracy of the bot-written stories, which could potentially give rise to misinformation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>CNET was forced to take note of its errors after another news site noticed that the bot had made mistakes, some of them serious. Not to mention, Google chatbot Bard’s <a href="https://www.wionews.com/business-economy/googles-shared-dip-after-ai-chatbot-bard-flubs-answer-in-new-ad-heres-what-happened-560132">latest mishaps</a> that cost the tech giant billions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Misinformation, unlike disinformation, may or may not be deliberate. But given accuracy is one of the fundamental elements of journalism, AI getting its basic factual data incorrect on multiple occasions can threaten the trustworthiness of journalism, in the long term. &nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Not all doom and gloom</strong></p>

<p>While AI might have its flaws, some media workers have also hailed bots like ChatGPT as a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/ai-bots-can-replace-journalists-claims-german-publisher-axel-springer-567118">“revolution”</a> for the industry. “Artificial intelligence has the potential to make independent journalism better than it ever was – or simply replace it,” said publishing behemoth Axel Springer’s boss Mathias Doepfner to his staff, as quoted by AFP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He announced a restructuring which would see “significant reductions” in production and proofreading of content as both companies have pushed AI as a tool to support journalists. Notably, the practice of media organisations using automation for routine or repetitive work is not new.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Can AI replace journalists?</strong></p>

<p>“AI is not stealing your job…Let that sink in,” wrote the now former manager of the JournalismAI initiative at the London School of Economics and Political Science, Mattia Peretti wrote in an analysis for Global Investigative Journalism Network (GIJN).&nbsp;</p>

<p>He added that the “truth is that artificial intelligence is not nearly as <a href="https://www.wionews.com/videos/can-ai-replace-human-intelligence-585570">intelligent</a> as it would need to be to replace you (journalists)”. A new report by Goldman Sachs, released in March said AI could potentially replace the equivalent of around <a href="https://www.wionews.com/trending/artificial-intelligence-could-replace-300-million-jobs-worldwide-goldman-sachs-report-576795">300 million</a> full-time jobs. But would journalism be one of them? Not yet.&nbsp;</p>

<p>AI can play <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/can-chatgpt-replace-journalists-in-breaking-stories-575750">various roles</a> to support a journalist’s work, but it will be long before it is changing newsroom roles, wrote Peretti, adding that by itself AI does not have the ambition nor the ability to steal jobs anytime soon.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Similarly, Alex Connock, author of “Media Management and Artificial Intelligence,” as per AFP said, that the use of content creation tools will see some people lose their jobs, but not in the realms of analytical or high-end reporting.&nbsp;</p>
