Speculation is mounting that DK Shivakumar could take oath as Karnataka Chief Minister on June 3 amid intense political discussions.
Reports suggest Congress leadership has been holding key meetings regarding a possible leadership transition in the state.

Karnataka Congress leader DK Shivakumar is set to become India's wealthiest Chief Minister after being chosen to lead the state, with declared assets worth Rs 1,413 crore as per his 2023 election affidavit. Data compiled by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) from election affidavits places Shivakumar ahead of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who has assets worth Rs 931 crore, and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, who has declared assets of Rs 648 crore. With this, the country's three richest chief ministers are all from southern India. According to the ADR's 2025 ranking, Naidu was followed by Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, who declared assets worth Rs 332 crore, and Karnataka's outgoing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. Shivakumar's affidavit shows total assets of Rs 1,413 crore, including Rs 1,140 crore in immovable properties and Rs 273 crore in movable assets. He has also declared liabilities amounting to Rs 265 crore.
From video parlour owner to Karnataka CM
Before emerging as one of Karnataka's most influential political figures, Shivakumar operated a small video parlour during the VHS era in the 1980s in what is now the Bengaluru South district. The outlet gradually became a popular meeting place for local youth, businessmen and aspiring political workers, helping him build grassroots connections early in life. By the time he reached his late twenties, Shivakumar had entered electoral politics as an MLA. Over the next three decades, he strengthened his political base in Kanakapura alongside his younger brother and former Bengaluru Rural MP DK Suresh. Through educational institutions, cooperative organisations and strong community networks, the brothers helped turn Kanakapura into a Congress stronghold. His assets rose from Rs 75.5 crore in 2008 to Rs 251 crore in 2013, increased to Rs 840 crore in 2018 and reached Rs 1,413 crore by 2023. A substantial share of his wealth comes from inherited landholdings, investments and appreciation in property values. His election disclosures show that he inherited agricultural land through the wills of his father and grandmother. He has declared residential properties in Bengaluru, Mysuru, Kanakapura and Delhi. His asset portfolio also includes a mall site in Bengaluru's Gopalpura area. Rising land prices across Karnataka over the past two decades have significantly boosted the value of these holdings. Known for his fondness for designer clothing, luxury watches and an upscale lifestyle, Shivakumar also maintains a strong connection with rural communities through his agricultural roots and fluency in rustic Kannada. His political career has not been without controversy. In August 2017, the Income Tax Department conducted raids at 67 locations linked to him. The operation, carried out by around 300 officials over 80 hours, resulted in the seizure of Rs 8 crore from his Delhi residence and another Rs 2 crore from other locations. DK Shivakumar set to become India’s richest Chief Minister: All you need to know about him

Siddaramaiah tendered his resignation from the post of Karnataka Chief Minister on Thursday (May 28, 2026). This comes as Siddaramaiah met Deputy CM DK Shivakumar and other MLAs during a breakfast meeting in Bengaluru. He reportedly told ministers that the Congress high command requires him to shift to national politics. Siddaramaiah's resignation came days after a leadership tussle between the South Indian leaders of the Congress party and two years before the Karnataka Assembly elections. Siddaramaiah said, "Deeply grateful to all who worked with me. I had said time and again that I will resign whenever high command tells me." "I got the opportunity to serve the people of Karnataka twice. I thank Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Mallikarjun Kharge," he added. Reflecting his political journey, he stated that he had never imagined becoming an MLA, minister or Chief Minister after joining the Congress in 2006. "It was by mistake I entered politics. Nobody in my family was in active politics, neither my parents nor anyone else. A major turning point in his political journey came in 2006 when he joined the Indian National Congress in the presence of Sonia Gandhi. Within a short time, he succeeded in gaining the confidence of the party leadership. Another significant moment came during the 2010 Bellary Padayatra, where Siddaramaiah led protests against the alleged illegal mining activities of the Reddy brothers. The campaign drew widespread attention across Karnataka at a time when illegal mining in Bellary had reportedly reached its peak under the then BJP-led government. Meanwhile, after being expelled from the JD(S) following a dispute, he championed the AHINDA movement (a coalition of religious minorities, backward classes, and Dalits). He joined the Indian National Congress in 2006, which transformed him into a statewide mass leader. Then minister Gali Janardhana Reddy had reportedly challenged Siddaramaiah in the Assembly by saying, “If you can, visit Bellary.” Accepting the challenge, Siddaramaiah launched a 320-km padayatra from Bengaluru to Bellary between July 25 and August 9, 2010. What began as a political march soon evolved into a massive public movement. Following the Congress victory in the 2013 Karnataka Assembly elections, Siddaramaiah became Chief Minister. His first tenure was widely viewed as administratively effective, with welfare initiatives such as Annabhagya, Ksheerabhagya, and Shadibhagya benefiting economically weaker sections and becoming closely associated with his leadership. However, during the same period, issues such as Tipu Jayanti celebrations and the proposal for a separate religious status for Lingayats were criticised by opposition parties, which alleged they were aimed at consolidating vote-bank politics. Siddaramaiah later returned as Chief Minister after the Congress secured victory in the May 2023 Assembly elections.

Siddaramaiah resigns: Inspiring journey of shepherd boy who became Karnataka CM

The Enforcement Directorate on Monday booked Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and some others in a money laundering case linked to the Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA), taking cognisance of a recent state Lokayukta FIR, official sources said.

The Enforcement Directorate on Monday booked Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and some others in a money laundering case linked to the Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA), taking cognisance of a recent state Lokayukta FIR, official sources said. The federal agency has filed an enforcement case information report (ECIR) to book the chief minister and others, they said. In a major development after the ED case, Parvathi, the spouse of Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, decided to voluntarily return the 14 plots of land that were earlier allotted to her by the authority and hand over the possession. In a letter addressed to MUDA officials, Parvathi said, "Further, I wish to surrender and return the compensation plots by cancelling the deeds of 14 plots executed in my favour by the Mysore Urban Development Authority. I am also handing over the possession of the plots back to the Mysore Urban Development Authority. Kindly take necessary steps in this regard as soon as possible." The FIR was lodged after a special court in Bengaluru last week ordered a Lokayukta police probe against Siddaramaiah in the case. The order of the special court judge came a day after the high court upheld the sanction granted by Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot to conduct an investigation against the senior Congress leader on allegations of illegalities in the allotment of 14 sites to his wife by the Mysuru Urban Development Authority. The ED has pressed sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) to book Siddaramaiah in its ECIR, the equivalent of a police FIR. According to the procedure, the ED is empowered to summon the accused for questioning and even attach their assets during the investigation. Siddaramaiah, 76, had last week said he was being targeted in the MUDA issue as the opposition was "scared" of him and noted that it was the first such "political case" against him. Also read: Tirupati Laddoo row: SC slams Andhra CM Naidu, says 'keep God out of politics' He also reiterated that he would not resign following the court ordering a probe against him in the case as he has done no wrong and asserted that he would fight the case legally. In the MUDA site-allotment case, it is alleged that compensatory sites were given to Siddaramaiah's wife in an upmarket area in Mysuru, which had higher property value as compared to the location of her land that was "acquired" by MUDA. The Lokayukta FIR has been registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) like 120B (criminal conspiracy), 166 (public servant disobeying law, with intent to cause injury to any person), 403 (dishonest misappropriation of property), 406 (criminal breach of trust), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 426 (mischief), 465 (forgery), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), 340 (wrongful confinement) and 351 (assault). A recent report has revealed that a staggering 75 per cent of the ministers in the newly appointed cabinet in India's southern state of Karnataka have unresolved criminal cases pending against them and that a whopping 97 per cent of them are as rich as Richie Rich. The news comes after the Indian National Congress won the election in a landslide earlier this month.

In its analysis of the self-sworn affidavits of 32 of the 34 ministers including the chief minister, the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) found that 24 of the ministers have pending criminal cases against them out of which 22 per cent, or seven, have serious criminal cases.

The charges these ministers face, among various others, include offences such as participating in riots, wielding dangerous weapons, engaging in criminal intimidation, tampering with or destroying documents or electronic records to obstruct their use as evidence, and endangering the lives or safety of others.

Millionaires all around

A thorough examination of the minister's self-declared assets and liabilities revealed that an overwhelming majority (97 per cent) of them are millionaires. The average assets of the 32 ministers analysed are 1.19 billion rupees or USD 14.4 million.

The deputy chief minister of Karnataka, DK Shivakumar, holds the highest declared assets, valued at INR 14.13 billion or around USD 171 million.

In comparison, on the other end of the spectrum, with the lowest declared assets is Timmapur Ramappa Balappa from the Mudhol (SC) constituency who by his own declaration possesses assets amounting to INR 5.8 million or around USD 70,880.

24 ministers, or 75 per cent, said they possess a graduate degree or higher. Additionally, two ministers declared that they are diploma holders.

Unsurprisingly, if we talk of age distribution, almost half (44 per cent) or 14 ministers of the Karnataka cabinet are aged between 61 and 80. The remaining 18 ministers, or 56 per cent, fall between the ages of 41 and 60.

In India, where about 65 per cent of the population is young, aged 35 or less, the mean age of Lok Sabha MPs for the last 20 years as per India Today's Data Intelligence Unit (DIU) has remained above 50.

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, and numerous Opposition party leaders, including Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, NCP leader Sharad Pawar, and Former J&K Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah, as per ANI reports.

This follows days of heated discussions in which the Congress chose Siddaramaiah as chief minister and Shivakumar as his deputy. While Siddaramaiah, 75, is a backward-class politician with over five decades of political experience and is regarded as one of the state's three remaining mass leaders, KPCC president DK Shivakumar, who is from the Vokkaliga group, is regarded as the architect of the triumph in Karnataka.

Congress's victory in Karnataka

After a 10-year absence, the Congress returned to power in Karnataka on its own strength on May 13, with victories or leads in 137 of 224 seats.

The party has received an overwhelming mandate from the voters. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has borne the price for "various failures." The regional party, the Janata Dal (Secular), has once again demonstrated that it is not a force to be reckoned with throughout the state.

Karnataka was the BJP's lone southern state. The state upheld its tradition of not re-electing a political party.

There might be a variety of reasons why an election is won or lost. However, some elements become apparent. For example, the ruling BJP is still a party that needs to spread across the state. The Congress, on the other hand, is thoroughly anchored in each district.

A swing of 2-5 percentage points is enough for the Congress to prevail over the BJP. Unlike the BJP, the Congress state leaders accepted the responsibility of guiding the party to the polls, reported Moneycontrol.

DK Shivakumar, the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee head, and former chief minister Siddaramaiah positioned the party brilliantly in front of the people. There was no let-up in their efforts to portray the ruling BJP as corrupt. Efforts began with the PayCM campaign months ago. The Congress didn't simply depend on its own strategy; it also enlisted the help of political organisations to boost its campaign.

Unlike the BJP, the Congress placed a high value on its senior Karnataka leadership. This has also contributed to the party's good mood today. The vote share of Congress has surpassed 40 per cent, a recent high. Surprisingly, the traditional Vokkaliga belt, primarily Mandya and Hassan, supported the Congress as well. The Congress has also received a lot of support over the years.

Additionally, the corruption accusations levelled against the Basavaraj Bommai administration harmed the BJP's image. BJP state officials, including ministers, were unable to trumpet their accomplishments or explain to the public how the Narendra Modi-led administration at the Centre has benefited the people of Karnataka.

Congress's victory in Karnataka After a 10-year absence, the Congress returned to power in Karnataka on its own strength on May 13, with victories or leads in 137 of 224 seats. India: Congress leader Siddaramaiah takes oath as Karnataka’s new CM, DK Shivakumar his deputy

Following four days of high-level meetings, India’s Congress party seems to have established a consensus about who will be leading the party’s government in the Indian state of Karnataka. A Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting was held in Bengaluru Thursday evening in which it was decided that Siddaramaiah will become the state’s next chief minister and D K Shivakumar will serve as his deputy. Karnataka went into polls on May 10, and Congress party emerged victorious in the results declared on May 13.

Oath-taking ceremony to be held on May 20

Right one week after the results were declared on May 13, the oath-taking ceremony of the upcoming cabinet will be held on May 20. Several non-Congress CMs from other opposition parties are expected to attend the event, along with top national Congress leaders.

An official invitation has already been extended to Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin, Telangana CM K Chandrashekar Rao, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, NCP chief Sharad Pawar, former Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray, and Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, as per a report by Times of India.

How did Congress overcome the leadership challenge in Karnataka?

Congress Legislature Party held in Bengaluru on May 14 failed to yield any result, which prompted the party to ask party chief Mallikarjun Kharge to make the tough decision. Then, Kharge appointed three observers to conduct a secret ballot and considered the views of every Congress MLA. Following the hectic process, the decision was made to choose Siddaramaiah as the next Congress state leader and the upcoming Chief Minister.

It is believed that Siddaramaiah enjoys backing from senior Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi, along with general secretary KC Venugopal, state in-charge Randeep Surjewala and a host of other top leaders were seen scurrying to Kharge’s residence over the past two days to offer their suggestions and recommendations.

Karnataka’s next CM announced: Congress elects Siddaramaiah as new state leader

Swedish tennis legend Bjorn Borg, who is known for his punctuality, left a felicitation ceremony in Bengaluru on Tuesday to watch his son Leo Borg play in the Bengaluru Open. Borg left the event after Karnataka chief minister Basavaraj Bommai, the chief guest of the ceremony, was late. As per the KSLTA officials, the chief minister was supposed to felicitate tennis legends Borg and Vijay Amritraj at 10:30 am but couldn't make it to the event before 11:15 am. Borg had left by then to watch his son Leo play in a Bengaluru Open match which was scheduled at 11 am The officials also added that Borg decided not to be felicitated to catch up on the match.

Speaking to The Indian express, KSLTA joint secretary said, "The chief minister could not make it on time because of his other commitments. He was also scheduled to go to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Airport after spending time at the KSLTA. However, when we informed the chief minister about calling off the felicitation, he took it sportively. I think the issue has been blown out of proportion."
“Although the chief minister did not meet Borg, he met Amritraj. He also spent about 15 minutes watching a match and then left for HAL,” he added.

Meanwhile, Leo Borg lost his match 2-6, 3-6 to Taiwanese Yu Hsiou Hsu in the Round of 32 match. Leo is being watched by not only his father but millions others as he strives to repeat the history associated with the name Borg. Notably, Bjorn Borg, who played tennis between 1974 to 1981, was the first man to win 11 Grand Slam singles titles in the Open Era. Borg won six French Open and five Wimbledon trophies in his career. News brief: Big stories of the day

The BJP's BS Yeddyurappa will be sworn in for the fourth time as Karnataka Chief Minister this evening, three days after the coalition government led by HD Kumaraswamy failed a test of strength. Mr. Yeddyurappa met with Governor Vajubhai Vala this morning to stake a claim and urged him to schedule an oath ceremony today. Mr. Yeddyurappa has to prove his majority by July 31 but sources say he may seek a trust vote before that, on Monday. The BJP's move ends speculation that the party was playing it safe to secure its numbers in the assembly.

Congress MLAs crossing the line, I'm ready to step down: Karnataka CM HD Kumaraswamy

It was nothing less than a soap opera when 2018 Karnataka Assembly elections took a dramatic turn and despite BJP emerging as the single largest party, two arch rivals - Congress and JD(S) formed government in the state.

Putting aside their differences, the two parties came together to form the government even after BJP leader BS Yeddyurappa had taken oath as the chief minister.

The coalition won the trust vote and HD Kumaraswamy replaced Yeddyurappa as the chief minister. However, soon after the Congress-JD(S) alliance came to power, Kumaraswamy 'overflowing emotions' were at public display.

In May 2018, Kumaraswamy said that he was at mercy of the Congress because JD(S) did not get an absolute majority. A month later in July, the chief minister burst into tears at a public rally stating that he was not happy being in the top post and was swallowing the pain like ‘Vishakantha’ (Lord Shiva), who drank poison.

Downplaying Kumaraswamy's statements as mere emotional outbursts, JD(S) had then claimed that there was no rift between the coalition partners.

However, this time Kumaraswamy's statement on the murder of a JD(S) worker crossed all acceptable lines. The chief minister was caught on tape instructing someone (reportedly a police officer) to avenge the worker's killing.

"I don't know how you will handle it (the case).. because it was your responsibility. I am actually disappointed because it (the murder) brought a bad name. He (who was murdered) was a good person.. There is no problem if you shoot such people mercilessly," he was heard saying.

His party, thereafter, issued a clarification saying that it was an 'emotional reaction' and not orders. However, it's extremely irresponsible for a coalition head and chief minister to give provocative statements. Such remarks fuel the enmity between the rival groups.

Karnataka government, under the leadership of Kumaraswamy, is responsible for the law and order situation in the state, and not to instigate police and public.

A complaint filed against Kumaraswamy says that such emotional orders are uncalled for and a clear violation of constitutional provisions. The complaint termed the incident a scary development.

Meanwhile, his emotional statements didn't end here. At a recent event, Kumaraswamy swore on his son to assure farmers of waiving off their loans.

In his defence, Kumaraswamy says he is an emotional person, and thus, reacts on human-centric issues.

It was a godsend for both Congress and JD(S) to form a government in the state. The chief minister's emotional outbursts damage the government credibility. It affects not just his image but also of the alliance partner - Congress.

Furthermore, such tearful statements give a chance to the opposition to target the state government leaving the Congress red-faced. Earlier, senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah had urged Kumaraswamy to refrain from making emotional statements in public.

Several politicians from PM Narendra Modi to Rajya Sabha MP Jaya Bachchan have cried in public; In 2014, Modi broke down during his speech as the PM-elect in Central Hall of Parliament. Jaya Bachchan was speaking on Nirbhaya gangrape case when she choked and couldn't hold back her tears.

Breaking down on sensitive issues is a natural human reaction. However, making insensitive, provocative statements and shedding tears on a daily basis reflect political immaturity of Kumaraswamy who is making his tenure as a 'tragic era'.

The BJP was eight short of the majority mark in the 224-member Karnataka Assembly.

Yeddyurappa resigns as Karnataka CM before trust vote, BJP fails to prove majority

A day after polling in the Karnataka assembly elections, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday asserted that he has no problem if the Congress high command decides to choose a Dalit leader for the state's top post.

To a question on the possibility of a Dalit chief minister, he said, “It is fine if the party decides to have a Dalit chief minister.”

But he made it clear no one could forcibly take the decision – and he was quick to add that he was popular among MLAs, whose opinion will have weight in the final decision.

The issue had been raised by BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during the election campaign, daring the Congress to replace Siddaramaiah with a Dalit face.

Meanwhile, BJP’s Sadananda Gowda took a dig at Siddaramaiah’s Dalit CM remark, saying that his stance had now shifted due to his fear of losing the polls.
