<p>As per the scientists, of the three recently identified species, Protemnodon viator weighed somewhere around 170kg, double the weight of the heaviest present-day red males, which can weigh up to 90&nbsp;kg.</p>

<p>Viator which in Latin stands for "traveller" or "wayfarer" were long-limbed kangaroo that could hop fairly quickly and efficiently. The research team says that the giant kangaroo lived in similar areas as the red kangaroos of today and was well-adapted to the arid central Australian habitat.</p>

<p>The other two — Protemnodon mamkurra and Protemnodon dawsonae — are new.</p>

<p>"The newly described Protemnodon mamkurra is likely one of these. A large but thick-boned and robust kangaroo, it was probably fairly slow-moving and inefficient. It may have hopped only rarely, perhaps just when startled," said Kerr.</p>

<p>Earlier, experts believed that these Protemnodon moved on all four legs. However, the research led by Isaac Kerr suggests that this was only true for about three or four species. Others, they believe, moved like a quokka or potoroo "bounding on four legs at times, and hopping on two legs at others".</p>

<p>The research, as per an article in Phys.org, follows the discovery of multiple complete fossilised Kangaroo skeletons from Lake Callabonna in arid South Australia in 2013, 2018 and 2019.</p>

<p>"Large kangaroos were much more diverse as recently as 50 thousand years ago, which may also mean that the habitat in Australia then was rather different from today."</p>

<p>The earliest recognized late Oligocene–middle Miocene, basal types of kangaroos, known to be existing 25 to 15 million years ago, most likely used quadrupedal bounding, climbing and slower speed hopping as their primary modes of locomotion.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The scientists examined the weight-bearing shin bones (tibia) and heel bones (calcaneus) of kangaroos to demonstrate how the hop traits transformed over time.</p>

<p>The research showed that the modern kangaroos' hopping was either rare or absent in all but a few lineages.</p>

<p>Early macropodoids, lived nearly 25–50 million years ago and were small and could bound, climb, and hop to some capacity.</p>

<p>"We want people to appreciate that large kangaroos were much more diverse as recently as 50,000 years ago, which may also mean that the habitat in Australia then was rather different from today. <p>"We are really hoping that the brush-tailed bettong is just one of the first of many species that we can bring back and help restore the bush," Sandow said.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Police officials of New South Wales have launched an investigation after more than a dozen kangaroos were found dead on an Australian coast.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">New South Wales police have reported that 14 kangaroos were found dead at two sites near the Batemans Bay on Saturday morning.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Police officials reached the Long Beach area at 7 am after the department received several reports of a number of kangaroos lying dead on the beach.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Officials found five adult kangaroos and one dead joey in Blairs Road and Sandy Place. However, later the officials were informed that seven more adult kangaroos and a joey were dead in the Maloneys Beach area.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">While the investigation hasn’t found conclusion yet, officials have reported that initial inquiries have suggested that these kangaroos may have been deliberately killed by someone.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">The police department has meanwhile decided to thoroughly examine CCTV footage and are also interviewing several witnesses.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Meanwhile, the police officials have also appealed locals to come forward with any relevant information. For now, the police has asked for more information on drivers of two white vehicles that were spotted around Blairs Road and Sandy Place at Long Beach and Maloneys Drive, as well as Hibiscus Close at Maloneys Beach, between 10pm on Friday and 12.30am on Saturday.</p>

Police officials reached the Long Beach area at 7 am after the department received several reports of a number of kangaroos lying dead on the beach. Officials found five adult kangaroos and one dead joey in Blairs Road and Sandy Place. However, later the officials were informed that seven more adult kangaroos and a joey were dead in the Maloneys Beach area. While the investigation hasn’t found conclusion yet, officials have reported that initial inquiries have suggested that these kangaroos may have been deliberately killed by someone. The police department has meanwhile decided to thoroughly examine CCTV footage and are also interviewing several witnesses. Meanwhile, the police officials have also appealed locals to come forward with any relevant information. For now, the police has asked for more information on drivers of two white vehicles that were spotted around Blairs Road and Sandy Place at Long Beach and Maloneys Drive, as well as Hibiscus Close at Maloneys Beach, between 10pm on Friday and 12.30am on Saturday. This has come at a time when several experts around the globe are warning about reducing population of kangaroos, partly due to climate crisis and partly due to increased animal cruelty.

Up until now, researchers had hypothesized that this kind of interspecies communication had existed only in animals that had evolved alongside humans.</p>

<p>The study suggests a higher level of intelligence in the Australian marsupials than had been assumed.</p>

<p>The researchers said they hoped the results would persuade people — especially Australians — to treat kangaroos with more care. Although they’re on the country’s coat of arms and are considered something of a national treasure, they’re also seen as a nuisance and are culled annually because of their overabundance.</p>

<p>There were nearly 50 million kangaroos across Australia in 2017, double the human population, according to official estimates. Farmers complain that kangaroos eat pastures meant for livestock, while researchers worry they are a threat to endangered wildlife by destroying habitat and eating reptiles.</p>

<p>“There’s a part of the population that thinks they’re pests and dumb and want to shoot them,” said Alan McElligott, lead author of the paper. “I think if the broader public has a greater understanding of the cognitive abilities of an animal, it’s easier to sell the idea that we should treat them with the best possible care.”</p>

<p>Initially, the kangaroos sniffed and scratched at the box. But once they realized they couldn’t open it, they turned their attention to McElligott, who was in the enclosure with them.</p>

<p>“The kangaroos looked up at me and they did this sort of gaze alternation — looking at the box, back at me, back at the box, back at me,” said McElligott, who formerly worked at the University of Roehampton and is now an associate professor at the City University of Hong Kong.</p>

<p>“A few of the kangaroos approached me and started sniffing my knee and scratching my knee,” he added. “If it was a dog you’d call it pawing.”</p>

<p>Ten of the 11 kangaroos involved in the study actively looked at McElligott, and nine alternated between looking at him and the box containing the food.</p>

<p>“They were really trying to intentionally communicate their desire to get him to help get the food out of the box,” said Alexandra Green, an animal behavior and welfare researcher at the University of Sydney, who is the paper’s co-author.</p>

<p>Green says she believes that the kangaroo’s behavior is a modification of how they communicate with one another in the wild.</p>

<p>“They’re a social species and would use these cues among each other,” she said. “In a captive setting, where there’s humans present, they’re probably able to adapt this ability to communicate with humans.”</p>
