General Jennie Carignan made history on Thursday (July 18) as she officially took command of Canada's armed forces, becoming the first woman to lead the country's military. The ceremony took place at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa.

Carignan, who has spent 35 years in the Canadian Army, is trained as a military engineer. Her extensive experience includes commanding troops in Afghanistan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Iraq and Syria.

"I feel ready, poised and supported to take on this manifold challenge," Carignan said during the ceremony. She highlighted several global and domestic issues that she will tackle, including conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, heightened global tensions, climate change, and threats to democratic values.

"Often, when I see for example these kinds of attacks, threats to our embassies, because they concern me very deeply and I tell the foreign minister, suppose if (they) happened to you, if it was your embassy, your diplomat, your flag, how would you react. We have to keep our position strong on this particular report which has come. I also saw it yesterday night, I was coming to Odisha in the morning, somebody may have been arrested, their police may have done some investigation," Jaishankar said at the event.&nbsp;

"But, the fact is that a number of gangland people, a number of people with organised crime links from Punjab have been made welcome in Canada. We have been telling Canada saying look these are wanted criminals from India, you have given them visas. Many of them have come in false documentation and yet you allow them to live there. If you decide to import for political purposes people with very dubious, actually, very negative backgrounds, there will be issues, they have in some cases created problems in their own country as a result of their own policies. No, why would we fear, if something happens there, it is for them to worry about," he added.&nbsp;

'Going to UN over PoK was a mistake...': India's Exernal Affairs Minister S Jaishankar

Amidst escalating diplomatic tensions between India and Canada regarding Ottawa's accusations on Hardeep Singh Nijjar killing case, a former Pentagon official has severely criticised Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for making unfounded allegations against New Delhi.

Reacting to Canada's accusations against India, former Pentagon official and a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, Michael Rubin, stated that Canada lacks sufficient evidence to support its claims.

He suggested that Trudeau might have made hasty allegations without substantial proof and urged him to clarify why his government was providing shelter to a "terrorist with a criminal record." Rubin went on to say that most probably Justin Trudeau won't be there for long in premiership, and the US can get rebuild its relationship with Canada after he's gone.

"Prime Minister Trudeau I think has made a huge mistake. He has made allegations in a manner which he hasn't been able to back. Either he was shooting from the hip and he doesn't have the evidence to support the accusations he made against the government. There is something there, in which case he needs to explain why this government was sheltering a terrorist," the former Pentagon official said.

"I suspect that the United States doesn't want to be pinned in the corner to choose between two friends, but if we have to choose between two friends, increasingly we're going to choose India on this matter simply because Nijjar was a terrorist and India is too important. Our relationship is too important. Justin Trudeau probably isn't long for the Canadian premiership, and then we can get rebuild the relationship after he's gone,"&nbsp;Michael Rubin said while speaking to news agency ANI.

The former Pentagon official emphasised that it's unwise to sacrifice long-term relations with the world's largest democracy for short-term political gains, suggesting that Trudeau's actions were shortsighted and driven by political considerations.

Meanwhile, the leader of the Canadian Opposition, Pierre Poilievre, expressed concerns about an increase in hate crimes against Hindus in Canada. He highlighted recent incidents of hateful comments and emphasised that every Canadian should be able to live without fear and feel welcomed in their community.

“We need to have the evidence that drew that allowed the prime minister to come to the conclusions he made,” he said.

In a bid to revive his prospects after announcing a snap election, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Tuesday promised to introduce a two-year ban on foreign buyers if re-elected to the office.

The PM made the announcement to placate the locals who have been grappling with soaring home prices. The federal elections &nbsp;are scheduled to take place on September 20.

“If you work hard, if you save, that dream of having your own place should be in reach,” Reuters quoted Trudeau as saying at a campaign stop in Hamilton, a fast-growing city outside Toronto.

Housing affordability has become the central theme in this election campaign, as the prices have sky-rocketed during the pandemic.

The surge in the price of homes is largely being attributed to foreign buyers, especially non-residents from China and Hong Kong who have been spending a good amount of fortune in Vancouver real estate.

According to Reuters, the Canadian Real Estate Association’s (CREA) home price index is up 69.7% since November 2015, when Trudeau first took office.

The average cost of a home was C$669,200 ($529,840) in July—a 16% rise from a year ago, according to the CREA.

“We’ll crack down on predatory speculators,” Trudeau was quoted as saying. “

Trudeau’s&nbsp;Liberal's Party of Canada&nbsp;has also proposed to introduce tax-free savings accounts for first-time buyers and more oversight of the real estate industry to fight money laundering. They’re also vowing to add or repair 1.4 million homes over the next four years.&nbsp;

Banking on a strong response against the COVID pandemic, Trudeau on August 15 called for snap elections. However, recent polls show that the difference between the governing Liberals and the opposition Conservative is narrowing.

Another national poll conducted by the non-profit Angus Reid Institute underscored the&nbsp;statistical tie, with the Liberals again at 33%, a lead of just 2 points over the Conservatives.

Trudeau’s attempt to garner a parliamentary majority in the September 20 elections is also likely to face further headwinds as the government attempts to tackle criticism over it’s “withdrawal fiasco” in Afghanistan.

According to local outlet Global News, “the first week of the campaign was dominated by criticisms over the Trudeau government’s slow evacuation.”

However, poll experts are of the view that international geopolitics “hardly” play a decisive role in Canadian elections.

Taking strong objection to the comments made by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau related to farmers’ protest in India Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday said that no leader of a country should speak about India's internal affairs.

"First of all, I would like to say about prime minister of any country that comment should not be made about India's internal affairs. India does not require any outside interference. We will sort out issues by ourselves. It is an internal matter of India. No country in the world has the right to comment on India's internal affairs," Rajnath Singh said.

"India is not any other country that someone can say anything," he added.

He was asked about criticism in some countries and Trudeau's remarks concerning protest by farmers on farm laws.

He said attempts had been made to mislead "our farmer brothers" and the same thing is going on.

Ultimately, it is about laws made in India, by the Indian government for the Indian farmer. Foreign leaders have no business talking about it despite knowing that Justin Trudeau and some other foreign leaders decided to weigh-in on India's domestic issues since they want to cater to their own vote banks at home.

The Canadian prime minister was addressing the Canadian-Punjabi community during Gurupurab which kick-started an entire row. It is an influential voting bloc. In the last election, 18 Sikhs were elected to the Canadian parliament. Just for reference, 13 Sikhs were elected to India's lower House last year.

Trudeau's cabinet has four Sikhs. So, the community has a voice at the highest levels of power but that doesn't mean, they get a voice in India's internal affairs. India has made that amply clear with a statement of its own.

Such comments are unwarranted, especially pertaining to the internal affairs of a Democratic country. It is also best that diplomatic &nbsp;conversations are not misrepresented for political purposes."

The statement isn't just for Trudeau but for all those leaders abroad who chose to weigh in on the protests in India. It includes Canadian opposition leader Jagmeet Singh whose party started a petition on its website calling on Justin Trudeau to make a statement on the protests in India.

They don't have a vote within the Indian parliament. They have no power to influence the laws made in India. They simply pander to their vote banks.

US Vice President Mike Pence and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will discuss their countries' joint dispute with China over Huawei during a meeting in Ottawa on Thursday, a senior US administration official said.

Pence, known for taking a hard line against China, will travel to the Canadian capital to discuss trade issues, including Huawei Technologies Co Ltd, the world's largest telecoms network gear maker, which Washington has moved to isolate.

"Canada has been a close ally in the way that they've approached their relationship with China - and there could be some conversation about Huawei," the official told reporters, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Washington has accused Huawei of being tied to China's government and has effectively banned US firms from doing business with the company for national security reasons.

The dispute spilt into Canada last year, and Ottawa has expressed frustration at what it sees as a lacklustre US response to harsh Chinese measures.

In December, Canada arrested Huawei's Chief Financial Officer Meng Wangzhou on a US warrant. She faces extradition to the United States on charges she conspired to defraud global banks about Huawei's relationship with a company operating in Iran. She and the company have denied the charges.

Shortly after her arrest, Canadian businessman Michael Spavor and former diplomat Michael Kovrig were detained in China and were formally arrested for espionage earlier this month. Canada has called the Canadians' detentions arbitrary.

China has also cut off imports of key Canadian commodities, hurting farmers.

"Expect some very tangible outcomes from their discussion with regard to China that we'll share with you tomorrow," a second U.S. official told reporters. The officials declined to say whether Pence would offer Canada assistance on the detentions and the trade stoppages.

Pence also plans to make a separate address in the coming days about the "current state of affairs" in China, the officials said.

The speech is seen as a sequel to one Pence gave in October, when he accused China of reckless military actions, cyber attacks and human rights abuses, as well as "malign" efforts to undermine Trump's reelection campaign in 2020.

The Huawei issue is the latest trade-related snafu to rock the relationship between the United States and Canada - normally two of the world's closest allies - since President Donald Trump took office.

Canadian officials were granted consular access on Friday to one of the two detainees in China and were still trying to contact the second, the Foreign Ministry said.

China detained the two&nbsp;businessmen Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig, a former diplomat and an adviser with the International Crisis Group (ICG) after Canadian police arrested Huawei Technologies Co Ltd's chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou, on December 1.

ICG President Robert Malley also called for Kovrig's release on Saturday.

"Michael's arrest is unjust. He should be freed immediately," Malley said in a statement.

"Far from being secretive, Michael's work was open for all to see, Chinese officials first and foremost," he said. Kovrig did not do anything to endanger China's national security, either as a diplomat or at the ICG, Malley said.

US&nbsp;prosecutors accuse Meng of misleading multinational banks about Iran-linked transactions, putting the banks at risk of violating US sanctions. Meng, who is the daughter of Huawei's founder, has said she is innocent.

Potentially complicating the case, US&nbsp;President Donald Trump made comments this week that legal experts say may have undermined the US&nbsp;basis for extradition.

Asked about the remarks, Freeland said: "We all agree that the most important thing we can do is to uphold the rule of law, ensure that Ms Meng's right to due process is respected and that the current judicial process in Canada remains apolitical."

Trudeau, in his strongest comments on the matter to date, said China's detention of the two men was "not acceptable."

China rejects Trudeau's insistence that the government cannot interfere with the judiciary. Meng was released on bail this week but has to remain in Canada.

"This is one of the situations you get in when the two largest economies in the world, China and the United States, start picking a fight with each other," Trudeau told City TV in Toronto.

"The escalating trade war between them is going to have all sorts of unintended consequences on Canada, potentially on the entire global economy. We're very worried about that," he said.

Lu Shaye, China's ambassador to Canada, told a university conference on Friday that the prospects for deeper business ties were good despite the dispute. He declined to comment when pressed by reporters about Trudeau's remarks.
