Julian Nagelsmann got off to a winning start as Germany's coach on Saturday with his team securing a comfortable 3-1 win over the United States in a friendly.

Germany looked much improved from the team that had suffered a 4-1 home defeat to Japan last month, a result which saw Hansi Flick fired as coach after a run of five matches without a win.

The Euro 2024 hosts could ill-afford another surprise loss but they delivered a solid, well-rounded performance after recovering from a Christian Pulisic opener for the USA in the match at East Hartford, Connecticut.

Although Pascal Gross struck the post early on for Germany, who were missing midfielder Joshua Kimmich due to illness, the home side looked threatening with Pulisic and Tim Weah lively on the flanks.

Gio Reyna, who had gone through a bitter public row with coach Gregg Berhalter after the World Cup last year, returned to the starting lineup and provided some creative touches as the Americans started well.

Pulisic put the USA ahead in the 27th minute with a superb solo goal, cutting in from the left flank and then unleashing a fine drive into the far corner.

But that appeared to serve merely as a wake-up call for Germany with Ilkay Gundogan levelling in the 39th minute after good work from Leroy Sane.

Sane dribbled across the American defense, played a one-two with Gundogan and tried to go round American goalkeeper Matt Turner, who could only push the ball into the path of Gundogan, who had a simple conversion.

Germany went ahead in the 58th with center forward Niclas Fuellkrug slotting home after a perfectly weighted one-touch pass from Robin Gosens.

With the USA defense at disarray, Fuellkrug then set up the lively Jamal Musiala for a simple tap-in to make it 3-1 for the Euro 2024 hosts.

Sane should have made it four when he was set up nicely by Musiala, but the Bayern Munich winger fired his shot wide from a promising position.

Musiala's speed and skill were major highlights of the performance from Germany with Gundogan, as always, calm and intelligent in the center of midfield.

"Against a good team with a lot of speed, we took a very good step in terms of football," said 36-year-old Nagelsmann, who felt his team had been too rushed in the opening 45 minutes.

"In the second half, we also had a fast pace of play, but more patience and control. That was the difference,"

Berhalter's Americans missed the impact of injured central midfielder Tyler Adams and Pulisic noted their weakness at tha back.

"It hurts. We had a good start to the game. I felt like we hurt them in a lot of moments. But yeah, little mistakes here and there. Defensively, we can be a bit better," the AC Milan winger said.

"Obviously, we have to give them credit. They have some unbelievable players. They played a strong game."

Germany will face Mexico in Philadelphia on Tuesday, when the USA will take on Ghana in Nashville.

New Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann named Mats Hummels and Thomas Mueller, World Cup winners in 2014, in his first squad for a tour of the United States in October.

Nagelsmann recalled Hummels, the central defender who last played for Germany in 2021, alongside Bayern Munich's Mueller, who returned to the squad in September under previous coach Hansi Flick as cover for midfielder Jamal Musiala, who was injured.

Union Berlin striker Kevin Behrens is called into the national squad for the first time in his career at the age of 32, alongside other first-timers Chris Fuehrich of Stuttgart and Bayer Leverkusen's Robert Andrich.

Nagelsmann though left out Hummels' Dortmund teammate, midfielder Emre Can, who had become a regular under Flick, and Dortmund central defender Nico Schlotterbeck.

The goal is "that we get used to each other as quickly as possible in the short time we have and try to implement the ideas in the few training sessions we have."

Germany will take on the United States in Connecticut on October 14 and Mexico in Philadelphia on October 18.

German Football Federation (DFB) has announced Hansi Flick’s successor for the national football side. Former Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann will take charge of the side. The announcement came on Friday, September 22 after Nagelsmann signed a 10-month deal. He will become the 11th manager of the national side since 1926 and&nbsp;will oversee Germany’s bid for the Euro 2024, which will be held in their homeland.

Germany were beaten 1-4 by Japan earlier this month while also losing to the same opposition at the World Cup.

Flick was shown the exit door&nbsp;on Sunday, September 10 which saw him become the first coach in Germany’s rich football history to be sacked. He succeeded Germany’s World Cup-winning coach Joachim Low in 2021 after Euro and walked away from the side with 12 wins in 25 matches

"I subordinate everything to the fact of having a great tournament in a great country. I have a great desire to take on this challenge. We will be a close-knit group next year,” Nagelsmann said upon his appointment.

Nagelsmann will take charge of the side for the first time in October’s international break where he will have the responsibility to build the team for the Euro’s. He is still contracted with Bayern Munich till 2026, the reason why he could not sign a contract with Tottenham Hotspur or Chelsea when they showed interest in him. He was sacked by Bayern in March during the international break with the side still in contention for a treble.

Nagelsmann’s successor Thomas Tuchel however could only manage to lead the side to the Bundesliga title. The Bayern board then faced criticism for axing the 36-year-old with Oliver Kahn also sacked after the end of the season.

The German Football Federation (DFB) has officially sacked head coach Hansi Flick after they were thrashed 4-1 by Japan in an international friendly on Saturday, September 9. The news comes with nine months remaining for the Euro 2024 where Germany are already through as the host of the tournament. The defeat was a spanner in the work for the former European champions as DFB sporting director Rudi Voeller, who coached the side to a 2002 World Cup final against Brazil, will take over an interim role.

German FA boss Bernd Neuendorf said the sacking was "unavoidable" after the team's recent run of "disappointing" results.

In a statement, Neuendorf said "with a view towards the European championships in our own country, we need a spirit of optimism and confidence", saying the decision was one of his "most difficult so far."

While Flick’s sacking looked inevitable on the cards, his exit had a piece of history as he became the first manager to be sacked from the national team role since World War II. He is also the only coach sacked from the position when it was created in 1926.

That leaves interim boss Mason as a potential candidate and, speaking before the Nagelsmann news broke, he listed Newcastle boss Eddie Howe as an inspiration after he took the Bournemouth job at the same age of 31.

"I've always said I'm ready," Mason said ahead of Tottenham's trip to Aston Villa on Saturday. "I'm ready for this moment. I feel like I can help the club. That's my general feeling and I'll stay true to that. That's been my feeling ever since the club trusted me to take on this responsibility.

"Obviously, you mentioned Eddie Howe and he is an incredible manager. He's an inspiration. I think one, probably not spoken about a great deal as well, is Gary O'Neil. The job that he's done at Bournemouth has gone under the radar a little bit but a young English manager and his first job."

Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi, former Spain coach Luis Enrique and Feyenoord boss Arne Slot are believed to be on Tottenham's shortlist.

Last weekend's 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace earned Mason a first win during his second stint as Tottenham interim boss.

Vaccinated Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann tests positive for COVID-19

Julian Nagelsmann will take over as Bayern Munich coach from next season to replace Hansi Flick, the reigning German and European champions announced on Tuesday.

Nagelsmann, 33, will move from RB Leipzig on a five-year contract after Flick, whose relationship with the club's powerful sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic has deteriorated, asked to be released from his contract.

"FC Bayern agreed to current head coach Hansi Flick's request to have his contract terminated on 30 June 2021, two years earlier than its original expiry date," the club said in a statement.

"We have been warned - it'll come down to form on the day."

On Tuesday, Nagelsmann will be without Swedish playmaker Emil Forsberg, who has failed to recover from a knee injury.

"He, unfortunately, won't make it - he still has problems changing direction when running," Nagelsmann revealed.

With Forsberg out, Dani Olmo is likely to play in the attacking midfield with Yussuf Poulsen and Christopher Nkunku up front for Leipzig.
