US President Joe Biden's administration will block migrants from claiming asylum at the US Mexico border until attempted crossings fall under new actions rolled out on Tuesday.

What does Biden's new asylum ban at the US-Mexico border do?

Some shocking details regarding United States President Joe Biden's cognitive decline have been revealed in a report published by The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday (June 4).

The Journal interviewed nearly 45 Republican and Democratic lawmakers and staffers who spoke about noticing Biden’s apparent deterioration in cognitive fitness while interacting with the 81-year-old leader in recent months.

The staffers and lawmakers said that the president has been seen speaking so softly in the meetings that it becomes difficult to understand what he is saying.

Meanwhile, others said that the president's grasp of policy details and demeanour differed by the day and he had to rely on notes frequently and sought help from aides during conferences.

“You couldn’t be there and not feel uncomfortable,” said one person, who claimed to have held talks with the president when critical negotiations were going on over providing Ukraine aid in January.

Meanwhile, others who attended the meeting recalled that Biden needed 10 minutes to start the meeting after entering the room and after he did, he had to resort to note cards to make obvious points on which people had already agreed. They added that the participants in the meeting were not able to clearly hear him.

“Much of the conversation didn’t include him,” stated the report, emphasising that the president also asked his staffers to answer some of the questions which were posed directly to him.

US President Joe Biden is set to announce a new executive order that will significantly limit asylum seekers crossing the US-Mexico border, reports said. This order will halt asylum requests once daily crossings exceed 2,500 outside of legal ports of entry and resume the request only when the number drops below 1,500.

This decision comes as Biden faces mounting pressure from Republicans and some Democrats over border security, with many Americans expressing dissatisfaction with the current handling of the border situation. Critics argue that it reflects a rightward shift in Biden's immigration policy, similar to the hardline stance of his Republican predecessor, Donald Trump.

On Monday (June 3), jury selection was completed in the federal gun case against the US president Joe Biden's son Hunter Biden in Delaware. Hunter faces three counts for allegedly possessing a gun while using narcotics, a charge that he denies vehemently. Hunter appeared in the court on Monday, where he was accompanied by the first lady Jill Biden. Joe Biden released a statement ahead of the beginning of the trial.

"I am the President, but I am also a Dad. Jill and I love our son, and we are so proud of the man he is today," he said. "Hunter’s resilience in the face of adversity and the strength he has brought to his recovery are inspiring to us. A lot of families have loved ones who have overcome addiction and know what we mean," Biden said.

The trial to last for two weeks

The trial, to be overseen by District Judge Maryellen Noreika, will last for two weeks. The charges against Hunter have been brought by special counsel David Weiss, a Trump appointee.

As the jury selection process got underway, several potential candidates were dismissed by the judge for having strong personal opinions about gun ownership, the Justice Department or the Bidens.

During the trial, prosecutors say they plan to call at least 12 witnesses in connection with the case, including Hunter Biden’s ex-wife, Kathleen Buhle, and his late brother’s widow, Hallie Olivere Biden.

They are also expected to use his memoir “Beautiful Things” as evidence against him, as well as a summary of data from his phone and iPad.

The three counts against Hunter Biden

In October 2018, Hunter Biden purchased a Colt Cobra revolver. According to two of the counts against him, he filled out a form stating he was not using illegal narcotics at that time. According to the third count, he used drugs and was in possession of a handgun. According to the indictment, Hunter Biden falsely and fictitiously stated on a federally mandated form “that he was not an unlawful user of, and addicted to, any stimulant, narcotic drug, and any other controlled substance."

Hunter Biden gun trial: Jury sworn in, opening statements expected on June 4

In a landmark case that might affect President Joe Biden's re-election campaign, Hunter Biden is scheduled to go on trial on Monday on felony gun charges. The current president's children are being tried for the first time in American history. Attorney David Weiss, who was designated as special counsel to oversee the Hunter Biden investigations last year, filed the charge on behalf of the Justice Department. Hunter Biden, 54, is accused of violating federal law by purchasing and possessing a firearm while abusing or addicted to drugs. Although he has been transparent about his battles with alcohol and crack cocaine addiction, he entered a not-guilty plea to the three counts. What are the charges against Hunter Biden? The first two allegations in the three-count indictment are related to the firearms purchase itself. When purchasing a firearm, a person is required to confirm on a form provided by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives that they are legally allowed to buy the weapon. Hunter Biden has been accused of lying on those forms. Count 3 deals with firearms possession. Possessing a firearm while consuming drugs is likewise illegal under federal law. According to the indictment and interaction made public in recent court files, Hunter Biden owned the pistol for eleven days in October 2018 before his girlfriend discarded it in the garbage because she was concerned about his mental state. Could Hunter Biden go to prison? The president's son could spend up to 25 years in jail if he is found guilty on all three counts. However, he has no past criminal record, and first-time offenders frequently receive terms substantially shorter than the maximum. Noreika would be completely responsible for his sentence. Also read: Mass shooting in US leaves 1 dead, 27 injured; investigation underway Given that these are federal accusations, Joe Biden has the authority to pardon his son at any moment. If his son is convicted, the president can commute his sentence, allowing him to avoid the punishment. The White House has publicly ruled out the idea of a pardon, but the political equations may shift after the November election. This is only one of two trials that Hunter Biden will undergo this year. The second lawsuit, which centered around Hunter Biden's financial troubles, is set to begin in September in Los Angeles. He has pled not guilty to tax evasion, submitting fake tax returns, and failing to submit his taxes on time. (With inputs from agencies)

Mediators of the Gaza war on Saturday (June 1) urged Israel and Hamas to finalise the peace plan shared by United States (US) President Joe Biden. Since the war began in October last year, the US, Egypt, and Qatar have for months been seeking to mediate an end to the war, but a deal has proven elusive. US President Biden said on Friday that the peace plan would bring immediate relief to people in Gaza and the hostages and their families. Israel had proposed a deal involving an initial six-week ceasefire with a partial Israeli military withdrawal and the release of some hostages while "a permanent end to hostilities" is negotiated through mediators, Biden added. Hamas said on Friday it was ready to engage "positively and in a constructive manner." However, a member of the Palestinian militant group told Qatari media that Hamas had not yet received details of the proposal, according to news agency Reuters. United States President Joe Biden, while speaking at a press conference, said that Israel's ceasefire proposal will have three phases.

He added that the first phase will last for six weeks and will include a "full and complete ceasefire"; withdrawal of Israeli forces "from all populated areas of Gaza"; release of a number of hostages, including women, the elderly, the wounded in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners' release.

Biden added that Palestinian civilians would be able to return anywhere in Gaza and humanitarian assistance will be increased.

He said that the ceasefire plan will allow a "surge" in humanitarian aid and there will be "600 trucks carrying aid into Gaza every single day."

"With a ceasefire, that aid could be safely and effectively distributed to all who need it. All that and more would begin immediately," said Biden.

The phase three of the ceasefire plan will include the return of remains of hostages who were abducted from Israel on October 7 and are now dead.

Watch: Israel war: Rafah battle intensifies as Israel seizes key Gaza-Egypt corridor Biden said that people have for months called for a ceasefire and now it is the time to yield to their voices and bring Hamas to an agreement over the deal. While finishing his address, Biden said, "It's time to begin this new stage" and ring the hostages back so that Israel is secured and suffering ends. "It's time for this war to end, and for the day after to begin," he added. US President Joe Biden will be officially nominated as the Democratic presidential candidate through a virtual roll call prior to the party’s convention in Chicago in August. This process will enable Biden to appear on the November ballot in Ohio.

The Democratic National Convention, where the president would otherwise be formally nominated, comes after Ohio’s ballot deadline of August 7. The party’s convention is scheduled for August 19-22.

Previously, the Ohio lawmakers have extended the deadline for candidates from both parties, but they had not done so for Biden this year.

To address the issue, Governor Mike DeWine convened a rare special session.

The virtual proceedings will let Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris to get the party’s formal nod and will be very similar to the process used in 2020, when the convention went virtual because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile in Chicago, Democrats will hold a state-by-state roll call, a process of nominating conventions, according to a Democratic National Committee official.

The DNC on Tuesday (May 28) did not specify when the virtual roll call will take place, but it is expected in the weeks after the committee’s rules and bylaws committee votes to propose changes to the roll call process.

That committee vote is scheduled for June 4.

Jaime Harrison, the Democratic National Committee chairman said, "Joe Biden will be on the ballot in Ohio and all 50 states, and Ohio Republicans agree. But when the time has come for action, they failed to do so repeatedly. Therefore, Democrats will handle this on our own."

“We will ensure that Republicans can’t chip away at our democracy through incompetence or partisan tricks and that Ohioans can exercise their right to vote for the presidential candidate of their choice,” Harrison added.

The negotiations between the House and Senate on a way out to Biden’s ballot challenge began on Friday (May 24).

State Reprepresentative Bill Seitz informed reporters during a conference call that he and state Senator Rob McColley, both Republicans, are leading the discussions, but no resolution has been announced as of Tuesday.

As the Ohio changed its certification deadline from 60 to 90 days ahead of its general election, state lawmakers have had to change the requirement twice, in 2012 and 2020, to accommodate candidates of both leading parties. Each change was only temporary.

Following their respective speeches at the party convention, the Libertarian Party on Sunday rejected former President Donald Trump and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and nominated party activist Chase Oliver for president.

Only six party members voted for Trump, the presumed Republican Party presidential nominee who was a write-in for the Libertarians.

Saudi Arabia's de facto ruler and United States President Joe Biden's top aide have reportedly held talks around a "semi-final" version of a deal that is expected to strengthen the security ties.

The meeting involved discussions between Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Jake Sullivan, Biden's national security advisor, in the eastern Saudi city of Dhahran, the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported on Sunday (May 19).

Sullivan arrived in Israel on Sunday for talks surrounding the ongoing war in Gaza.

"The semi-final version of the draft strategic agreements between the Kingdom and the United States of America, which are almost being finalised... were discussed," SPA said.

The meeting between the officials also involved talks around "what is being worked on between the two sides on the Palestinian issue to find a credible path towards a two-state solution", along with endeavours to put an end to the ongoing war in Gaza and streamline the distribution of humanitarian aid in the region.

The Biden administration has actively chased the 'mega-deal' where Washington has agreed to give benefits to Saudi Arabia including a defence pact and assistance with a civilian nuclear programme with uranium enrichment capacity in exchange for providing first-ever recognition of Israel.

Earlier in the month of September, Prince Mohammed in an interview with the US network Fox News said that "every day we get closer" to a deal to normalise ties. This was before Hamas launched unprecedented attacks against Israel.

After the Palestinian militant group's Oct 7 assault, the US had accused Hamas of derailing the efforts to normalise ties between Saudi Arabia and Israel.

"It wouldn't be a surprise that part of the motivation may have been to disrupt efforts to bring Saudi Arabia and Israel together, along with other countries that may be interested in normalising relations with Israel," the US Secretary of State had said.

The chief of Canada's Security Intelligence Service cautioned the people against the use of TikTok stating that the data the application obtains from its users is "available to the government of China."

"My answer as director of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) is that there is a very clear strategy on the part of the government of China to be able to acquire personal information from anyone around the world," CBC News quoted CSIS Director David Vigneault as saying.

TikTok spokesperson in response said, that "these assertions are unsupported by evidence, and the fact is that TikTok has never shared Canadian user data with the Chinese government, nor would we if asked."

Earlier, in September last year, Canada ordered a national security review of a proposal that was put forward by TikTok to expand the short-form video hosting application's business in the country.

Vigneault said that he would also take part in the proposal's review and subsequently offer advice, reported CBC.

"We will continue to engage with Canadian officials and would welcome the opportunity to meet with CSIS to discuss how we protect the privacy and security of Canadians," the spokesperson added.

TikTok, ByteDance challenge potential US ban in court

This comes after TikTok and its parent firm ByteDance earlier this month filed a legal challenge against the US targeting a bill signed by President Joe Biden that would push the app to either face a ban in the United States or to be sold.

The development came almost two weeks after Biden passed a law giving the popular short-form video hosting service an ultimatum of 270 days to find a non-Chinese buyer or face a ban in the country.

TikTok argues that the bill signed by the US president was unconstitutional.

"For the first time in history, Congress has enacted a law that subjects a single, named speech platform to a permanent, nationwide ban, and bars every American from participating in a unique online community with more than one billion people worldwide," said the suit by TikTok and ByteDance.

The lawsuit by the firm and the short-video sharing platform alleges that the move violates the First Amendment, charging that "Congress has made a law curtailing massive amounts of protected speech."

It further stated that the divestiture demanded for the short video app for it to be functional in the country is "simply not possible".

It was all set for Trump-Biden presidential debates, now ex-president puts up a ‘test’ demand

US President Joe Biden asserted executive privilege and blocked the audio tapes of his interview with special counsel Robert Hur, over his mishandling of classified files, from releasing.

US President Joe Biden asserted executive privilege and blocked the audio tapes of his interview with special counsel Robert Hur, over his mishandling of classified files, from releasing. In February, special counsel Robert Hur had questioned the age and memory of the US president. The Republican federal prosecutor had refused to recommend charges against President Biden in the case of handling of classified documents. The decision was notified to Republicans James Comer and Jim Jordan in a letter by White House counsel Ed Siskel on Thursday (May 16). Also Read: Biden government imposes tariffs on Chinese EVs and computer chips The decision was taken after the US president was recommended to assert executive privilege by Attorney General Merrick Garland. “It is the longstanding position of the executive branch held by administrations of both parties that an official who asserts the President’s claim of executive privilege cannot be prosecuted for criminal contempt of Congress," wrote Justice Department official Carlos Felipe Uriarte in a letter to the two Republicans. In this report, Hur wrote that one reason for not bringing a case against Biden is that the president can portray himself as an "elderly man with a poor memory" and be sympathetic to a jury. Garland likely to be held in contempt of Congress Republicans have demanded the release of the recordings of Hur's interviews with the president, an action which was pushed back by US Attorney General Merrick Garland. Garland will most probably be held in contempt of Congress over the step. In another letter to Biden, Garland wrote that the audio recordings of the interview "fall within the scope of executive privilege." Giving the recordings to Congress "would raise an unacceptable risk of undermining the Department’s ability to conduct similar high-profile criminal investigations — in particular, investigations where the voluntary co-operation of White House officials is exceedingly important,” he said. Watch: US: Joe Biden, Donald Trump agree to two debates on June 27 and September 10 Garland further said to the Democratic president that the “committee’s needs are plainly insufficient to outweigh the deleterious effects that the production of the recordings would have on the integrity and effectiveness of similar law enforcement investigations in the future.” Meanwhile, Assistant Attorney General Carlos Felipe Uriarte appealed to the lawmakers not to go ahead with the contempt effort to avoid “unnecessary and unwarranted conflict.” “It is the longstanding position of the executive branch held by administrations of both parties that an official who asserts the president’s claim of executive privilege cannot be held in contempt of Congress,” wrote Uriarte. The US State Department has now opened discussions with the House Foreign Affairs and Senate Foreign Relations committees about the possible sale due to the informal notification on Tuesday, CNN reported.

So far, there is no set timeline for when the Congress would officially be notified of the sale. Consequently, there is no timeline for when these weapons would actually be sent to Israel.

Last week's now-paused US shipment to Israel included 2,000-pound bombs and 500-pound bombs. The weapons supply pause came amid Washington's purported opposition to them being used in the densely populated areas of Rafah.

The US officials cited by the US media say that other cases of weapons shipments to Israel — such as the one paused last week — would remain under review.

But simultaneously, the US officials also maintain that Washington will continue to make sure that Israel has the military capacity to defend itself. That is, the longer-term weapons deals with Israel will not be halted at this time.

"We are continuing to send military assistance, and we will ensure that Israel receives the full amount provided in the supplemental. We have paused a shipment of 2,000-pound bombs because we do not believe they should be dropped in densely populated cities. We are talking to the Israeli government about this," US national security adviser Jake Sullivan said on Monday.

Biden moves forward to send over $1 billion in new arms to Israel: Reports

Hunter Biden's bid to postpone his gun charges trial on June 3 was rejected on Tuesday (May 14). His legal team argued they needed more time to prepare, but the judge denied it.

Hunter Biden’s lawyer Abbe Lowell pushed to postpone the trial to September, stating that the defence team has struggled to find expert witnesses who would be willing to help Hunter Biden, mainly regarding issues related to drug addiction and drug forensics.

“We have not been delaying, we have not been late,” Lowell said in his opening remarks to Judge Maryellen Noreika. “We have been trying our best.”

Lowell further told Noreika they had found three people who had tentatively agreed to appear as expert witnesses, but the retention agreements are yet to be finalised.

“People are hesitant to get involved in this case,” he added, citing the noise surrounding his high-profile client.

Hunter Biden is charged with three felonies related to a 2018 gun purchase. The charges allege he was in possession of a firearm while using illegal drugs and that he lied on a background check form.

Judge Maryellen Noreika, an appointee of Donald Trump, refused to delay the case, noting that the indictment came down eight months ago and that the lawyers knew the investigation was underway long before that.

After she announced that the trial would proceed as scheduled, Lowell made one last attempt to get her to postpone it until the first week of July.

“I am pleading with your honour to give me the time to do this,” he said.

Noreika didn’t agree. Throughout the hearing, she expressed irritation with the defence team, at one point telling Lowell, “I do not need to be your scheduling secretary.”

Hunter Biden is facing criminal charges on two separate fronts. In Delaware, he is charged with felonies related to a 2018 gun purchase, while in California, he is facing charges related to his taxes. Both cases stem from a years-long investigation led by special counsel David Weiss.

Biden's legal team has challenged both indictments but has been unsuccessful in getting them dismissed by the presiding judges, Noreika in California and Judge Mark Scarsi in Delaware.

Derek Hines, a prosecutor handling the gun case, suggested to the judge that Lowell and his firm should have ample resources to competently represent their client — and that the special counsel’s staff isn’t as formidable as Lowell implied.
