With less than six months left for the United States presidential elections, it seems like the country will witness a close race between former President Donald Trump and his successor Joe Biden, yet again. A recent survey, on Monday (May 13) suggested that Trump has maintained his narrow lead in five key battleground states with voters expressing their discontent with Biden’s handling of the economy and the war in Gaza.&nbsp;

<h2>What did the poll find?</h2>

The survey conducted by The New York Times, Siena College and The Philadelphia Inquirer found that Trump was leading among registered voters in five of the six key states – Michigan (49 per cent to 42 per cent), Arizona (49 per cent to 42 per cent), Nevada (50 per cent to 38 per cent), Georgia (49 per cent to 39 per cent) and Pennsylvania (47 per cent to 44 per cent).&nbsp;

According to the report, the incumbent president has a narrow lead among registered voters in only one battleground state, Wisconsin with 47 per cent to 45 per cent. Notably, Biden had secured a victory in all six states in the last presidential election in 2020.&nbsp;

The NYT report noted that the results have remained “mostly unchanged” since the last series of polls in November. Since then, one of the four criminal cases against Trump went to trial in Manhattan, while Biden’s campaign poured tens of millions of dollars in advertisements across the key states.&nbsp;

The polls show that issues like the rising cost of living, immigration, Israel’s war in Gaza and a desire for change have affected the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee’s campaign. Nearly 70 per cent of voters believe the American political and economic systems need major changes or “even to be torn down entirely.”

Biden and Trump are mostly tied among young (18-to-29-year-olds) and Hispanic voters, according to the poll.&nbsp;

Notably, the former president has surprisingly gained the support of more than 20 per cent of Black voters – the highest level of Black support for any Republican presidential candidate since 1964.&nbsp;

<h2>Robert F Kennedy Jr to sway the election?</h2>

The latest poll also found that independent Robert F Kennedy Jr’s candidacy has the potential to sway the election. According to the report, Kennedy Jr won an average of 10 per cent of the vote across the six states.&nbsp;

US presidential election: Trump maintains lead over Biden in five key battleground states, shows poll

U. S. President Joe Biden is getting ready to announce a new package of tariffs on Chinese imports, which will be concentrated in strategic industries, such as electric vehicles (EVs), according to media reports.

Tariffs on key sectors

The impending announcement, expected to be made public next Tuesday, will uphold the existing tariffs on numerous Chinese goods implemented by former President Donald Trump. However, it will also introduce new tariffs on semiconductors, solar equipment, and EVs. In addition, the Chinese-made medical supplies such as syringes and personal protective equipment are going to be subject to more tariffs.

Strategic competitiveness and national security

The Biden administration's revisions to the "Section 301 tariffs" address the critical sectors that matter for strategic competitiveness and national security according to sources familiar with the matter.

Push for Higher EV tariffs

Lawmakers have been pushing for substantial increases in tariffs on imported Chinese light-duty vehicles, even though this segment of vehicles from China only makes up a small part of the current volume of imported vehicles. In the new scheme, the existing tariffs on Chinese EVs will become four times higher than the previous tariffs. The Senate Banking Committee Chairman Sherrod Brown calls for a permanent structuring of the plan due to data security risks.

Delays and internal discussions

The office of the U. S. Trade Representative has already given recommendations to the White House but the final announcement has been delayed because of internal discussions. Some sources suggest that the announcement might not occur on Tuesday, as initially anticipated.

Contrasting approaches

Biden's approach to tariffs contrasts with Trump's proposal of blanket tariffs, which the current administration perceives as overly broad and likely to fuel inflation. Trump had advocated for tariffs of 60% or higher on all Chinese imports.

Potential retaliation and trade war concerns

The introduction of new tariffs could cause China's counter attacks, thus leading to the escalation of the already existing tensions between the two largest economies in the world. Trump's previous tariff policies initiated a trade war between the U.S. and China.

Departure from free-trade consensus

Both Biden and Trump have departed significantly from the previous free-trade consensus in Washington. Biden started a review of Trump-era policies in 2022, especially the ones that were made under Section 301 of U. S. trade law, to be more in line with a tough stance on trade with China.

Investigation and pressure on Mexico

Biden's administration has undertaken a review across several sectors, including shipbuilding, maritime, and logistics, that could provide them with leeway for more tariffs to be applied. Additionally, there have been efforts to pressure Mexico to prevent China from indirectly selling metal products to the U.S.

China has criticised the tariff measures, viewing them as counterproductive and harmful to both the U.S. and global economies.

The former United States President Donald Trump lambasted his successor Joe Biden and called him a “total moron” during a rally at Wildwood, New Jersey. Meanwhile, Biden, on Saturday (May 11) called Trump “clearly unhinged” and said “something snapped” after the Republican lost the 2020 presidential elections.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Total moron’</h2>

In true Trump fashion, the former president lashed out during a recent campaign rally with an estimated 80,000-100,000 supporters in attendance on Saturday evening in New Jersey calling Biden the worst president.&nbsp;

“You could take the 10 worst presidents in the history of our country, and add them up... and they haven’t done the damage to our country that this total moron has done,” said the former president.&nbsp;

He added, “He’s a fool, he’s not a smart man. He never was.” He also promised the hordes of his supporters that he would win New Jersey, a deep blue state that hasn’t voted for a Republican for president since 1988.&nbsp;

In the 90-minute speech, Trump also gave the Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg a new nickname – “Fat Alvin.” The Manhattan DA brought the 34-count indictment against the former president in New York for falsifying business records to cover the hush money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels.

Trump, who has spent weeks sitting in the Manhattan court for his historic criminal trial, also blamed the US president for his many legal woes even though there is no evidence that the US president is involved in the case in any way.&nbsp;

“I am being forced to endure a Biden show trial, all done by Biden,” said Trump, adding that the trial is being carried out by “radical Democrat District Attorney…you know who he is? Fat Alvin, corrupt guy.”

Trump also went off-track and called fictional serial killer Hannibal Lecter, a “wonderful man” and claimed that his rallies drew bigger crowds than Bruce Springsteen concerts.&nbsp;

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee who is grappling with four indictments also claimed that he has been “indicted more than the great Alphonse Capone,” a violent Prohibition-era mob boss from the city of Chicago.

<h2>‘Unhinged’</h2>

“It’s clear that…when he lost in 2020, something snapped in him,” Biden told supporters at a private fundraiser Saturday, as quoted by CNN.&nbsp;

He added, “He’s not only obsessed with losing in 2020, he’s clearly unhinged. Just listen to what he’s telling people.”
&nbsp;
The presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Biden said that the upcoming presidential election will be “close” and “we feel good about the state of the race.”&nbsp;

‘Setback for peace talks’: Hamas slams Biden’s call for releasing all hostages in Gaza

United States President Joe Biden on Saturday (May 11) said that a ceasefire in the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas would happen as soon as "tomorrow" if the Palestinian militant group released the hostages it held captive following its Oct 7 assault.

"There would be a ceasefire tomorrow if Hamas would release the hostages," Biden said at a fundraiser outside Seattle, at the home of a former Microsoft executive, after avoiding the topic at three similar events on Friday.

"Israel said it's up to Hamas, if they wanted to do it, we could end it tomorrow. And the ceasefire would begin tomorrow," Biden said while addressing the crowd of about 100 people.

The US president's remarks came after he issued a warning to Israel stating that he would not supply weapons, including artillery shells if its forces attack the city of Rafah.

"If they go into Rafah, I'm not supplying the weapons that have been used... to deal with the cities," Biden said in a televised interview with CNN.

"We're not gonna supply the weapons and the artillery shells that have been used."

This also comes as Israel on Saturday hit several parts of Gaza including Rafah where it had ordered more evacuations earlier in the day.

As per news agency AFP, at least 21 people were killed during strikes in central Gaza and taken to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah. While, in Rafah, there were intense air strikes near the crossing with Egypt.

The strikes came after the Israeli military on Tuesday (May 7) seized and closed the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing -- through which all fuel passes into Gaza -- after ordering residents of eastern Rafah to evacuate.

On Saturday, the military said that troops were fighting "armed terrorists" at the crossing and had found "numerous underground tunnel shafts."&nbsp;

<h2>Hamas releases video showing hostage</h2>

Meanwhile, Hamas's armed wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, on Saturday (May 11) released a video showing a man held hostage in Gaza. The man can be seen alive in the 11-second footage. The video is superimposed with text in Arabic and Hebrew that reads: "Time is running out. Your government is lying."

The man in the video is believed to be Nadav Poplewell, a UK national, who was kidnapped from Kibbutz Nirim. Hamas said, "he died of wounds that he sustained in an Israeli air strike more than a month ago."

The 51-year-old hostage was kidnapped along with his mother Channa Peri, who was released in a hostage-sharing agreement in November last year.

WATCH | US: Biden Administration acknowledges possible Israeli weapons misuse in report to Congress × The strikes came after the Israeli military on Tuesday (May 7) seized and closed the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing -- through which all fuel passes into Gaza -- after ordering residents of eastern Rafah to evacuate. On Saturday, the military said that troops were fighting "armed terrorists" at the crossing and had found "numerous underground tunnel shafts." Hamas releases video showing hostage Meanwhile, Hamas's armed wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, on Saturday (May 11) released a video showing a man held hostage in Gaza. The man can be seen alive in the 11-second footage. The video is superimposed with text in Arabic and Hebrew that reads: "Time is running out. Your government is lying." The man in the video is believed to be Nadav Poplewell, a UK national, who was kidnapped from Kibbutz Nirim. Hamas said, "he died of wounds that he sustained in an Israeli air strike more than a month ago." The 51-year-old hostage was kidnapped along with his mother Channa Peri, who was released in a hostage-sharing agreement in November last year. (With inputs from agencies)

Biden says Gaza ceasefire possible as soon as 'tomorrow' if Hamas releases hostages

US President Joe Biden, at a fundraising event near San Francisco for his re-election campaign, on Friday (May 10) joked that he wished his rival former president Donald Trump had injected himself with a little bleach.

He said this while bringing up one of Trump's most controversial suggestions from the early days of the coronavirus pandemic.&nbsp;

<h2>Bleach wars: He said, (s)he said</h2>

Biden humorously wished that his Republican rival Trump had taken his own advice about injecting bleach as a potential treatment for the virus.

During the gathering, Biden highlighted the outbreak that marked Trump's tenure, reminding his audience of the recommendation Trump infamously made during a press briefing in 2020.&nbsp;

"Remember him saying the best thing to do is just inject a little bleach in your arm? That’s what he said. And he meant it. I wish he had done a little bit himself," quipped the Democrat.

During the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020,Trump had proposed that an "injection inside" directly into the human body of disinfectants, such as bleach or isopropyl alcohol, might combat the virus. The comment had quite predictably sparked widespread disbelief and concern at the time.

The current president also poked fun at what he described as Trump's "love letters" exchanged with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.&nbsp;

Trump, during his presidency, had famously engaged in diplomacy with Kim. The duo had engaged in a number of high-profile meetings, exchanged personal letters, copies of which Trump reportedly kept in a loose-leaf binder in the Oval Office.

However, in his jest, Biden made a gaffe, accidentally referring to Kim as the president of South Korea.

Biden's mocking digs at Trump's past comments aren't new. Previously, on April 24 in Washington, Biden joked that Trump had indeed followed through with the bleach injection and "it all went to his hair."

Trump too rarely leaves a chance to slam his democrat rival. Recently, blasting Biden during a speech in Freeland&nbsp;(Michigan), Trump, as per AFP, had said: "Every single thing he touches turns to s**t."&nbsp;

Donald Trump met with top oil executives in the US and asked them to raise $1 billion for his presidential campaign, the Washington Post claimed in a report on Thursday (May 9). He promised them to reverse dozens of the Biden administration's environmental rules and policies, the paper claimed.&nbsp;

Citing unidentified sources familiar with the meeting last month in Florida, the report claimed that the presumptive Republican presidential nominee vowed to end emissions rules aimed at promoting electric vehicles and halt the Biden administration's freeze on permits for new liquefied natural gas exports.&nbsp;

In March, the Biden administration announced new automobile emissions standards. The officials called it the most ambitious plan ever to cut planet-warming emissions from passenger vehicles.&nbsp;

The new Environmental Protection Agency rules aim to cut tailpipe emissions by 49 per cent between model years 2027 and 2032.

Meanwhile, the EPA set a target for EVs to make up at least 35 per cent of new vehicle sales by 2032.&nbsp;

Notably, the set standards are less ambitious than the proposed rules released last year. Previously, the target was to reduce emissions by 56 per cent by 2032 and called for EVs to represent 67 per cent of new vehicles by that year.&nbsp;

Trump asked US oil executives for $1bn to reverse Biden administration's environmental rules: Report

The Biden administration has proposed a new rule which it says will streamline asylum processing at the southern border. The Thursday (May 9) proposal seeks to deny certain migrants deemed to "pose a national security or public safety risk".

<h2>Rejection at get-go</h2>

As per reports, the proposed rules would allow immigration officials to reject and deport at an early stage violent asylum seekers who are already ineligible for asylum. This, as per the Biden administration officials, would help enhance national security and save taxpayer dollars.

The Guardian reports that the rule would target migrants "convicted of a particularly serious crime," or who have "participated in the persecution of others."

Additionally, it will also target migrants who are deemed a danger to the security of the United States on reasonable grounds or those inadmissible on "terrorism-related grounds," said a memo distributed by the Department of Homeland Security.

<h2>Were these people allowed into the US earlier?</h2>

No. Federal law already bars asylum migrants who are believed to pose a threat to national security or public safety. However, with the new rule, asylum officers would be empowered to consider their ineligibility during initial screening due to "credible fear".&nbsp;

"The proposed rule we have published today is yet another step in our ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of the American public by more quickly identifying and removing those individuals who present a security risk and have no legal basis to remain here," said the secretary of homeland security Alejandro Mayorkas.

"We will continue to take action, but fundamentally it is only Congress that can fix what everyone agrees is a broken immigration system," he added in a statement.

The rules are set to be issued as a proposed regulation and will be finalised at a later date, reported Reuters citing an officer. The report added that the Biden administration had considered using more restrictive Trump-era restrictions to block asylum seekers.

Expected to be issued this week, the regulation would potentially pave the way for thousands of people to be quickly deported from the US each year.

US to reject asylum claims faster under newly proposed regulation

US President Joe Biden said on Wednesday (May 8) that he would stop US weapons supplies to Israel if it attacks Rafah in southern Gaza, in his most direct warning so far amid the war against Hamas that has led to massive humanitarian crisis in the blockaded Palestinian enclave.

Biden's fresh warning came after the United States recently halted a shipment of American bombs to Israel amid the looming prospect of a full-fledged Israeli invasion of Rafah where about two million Palestinians are currently living under tents after being displaced due to war elsewhere in Gaza.&nbsp;

Hours after Biden's comment, Israel's ambassador to the United Nations said that US president's threat to stop certain arms supplies to Israel "very disappointing".

Biden, however, pointed out that the US is not shifting too far from Israel.

"We are not walking away from Israel's security," Biden insisted in the CNN interview. "We're walking away from Israel's ability to wage war in those areas."

Israel has already launched a limited invasion of Rafah after taking over a key crossing point and overnight bombardments over purported Hamas targets. Even if the pause in US shipments happens, Israel would still be left with&nbsp;a significant weapons stockpile.&nbsp;

Donald Trump will once again refuse to accept the results if he loses the November elections, warned US President Joe Biden on Wednesday (May 8).

'This is Trump': Biden warns Trump once again won't accept results if he loses November elections

United States President Joe Biden on Tuesday (May 7) cautioned of a "ferocious surge" in antisemitism during his Holocaust memorial speech amid a sharp rise in the number of Gaza protests in US universities.

"Never again simply translated for me means: Never forget. Never forgetting means we must keep telling the story, we must keep teaching the truth," Biden said as he addressed a bipartisan memorial held at the US Capitol's Emancipation Hall. "The truth is we're at risk of people not knowing the truth."

Biden, who has backed its staunch ally in the war against Hamas, said that Oct 7 was the deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust.

"This hatred (of Jews) continues to lie deep in the hearts of too many people in the world and requires our continued vigilance and outspokenness," Biden said.

<h2>'Hamas unleashed terror'</h2>

He then highlighted that the people must not forget that it was Hamas who first launched an attack against Israel on Oct 7 and "unleashed this terror".

"Now here we are, not 75 years later, but just seven and a half months later, and people are already forgetting ... that Hamas unleashed this terror," he said. "I have not forgotten, nor have you. And we will not forget."

He then laid stress on an alarming rise in antisemitism in the United States, including campuses that are roiled by demonstrations against the ongoing war in Gaza.

"We've seen a ferocious surge of anti-Semitism in America and around the world," Biden said.

The Jewish students enrolled in US universities have reported an increase in antisemitism since the Palestinian militant group Hamas' Oct 7 attack on Israel.

"There's no place on any campus in America -- any place in America -- for anti-Semitism or hate speech or threats of violence of any kind," Biden said.

Earlier, Israel's president also condemned the protests stating that US campuses were "contaminated" by hatred.

Biden's speech also comes against Israel's seizure of a key border crossing in Rafah in southern Gaza despite several warnings from the United States and amid the ongoing talks to broker a deal for the release of hostages held captive by Hamas.

The development comes almost two weeks after Biden passed a law giving the popular short-form video hosting service an ultimatum of 270 days to find a non-Chinese buyer or face a ban in the country.

TikTok argues that the bill signed by the US president was unconstitutional.

"For the first time in history, Congress has enacted a law that subjects a single, named speech platform to a permanent, nationwide ban, and bars every American from participating in a unique online community with more than one billion people worldwide," said the suit by TikTok and ByteDance.

The lawsuit by the firm and the short-video sharing platform alleges that the move violates the First Amendment, charging that "Congress has made a law curtailing massive amounts of protected speech."

It further stated that the divestiture demanded for the short video app&nbsp;for it to be functional in the country is "simply not possible".

The suit was filed at a federal court in Washington.

<h2>'No plans to sell TikTok'</h2>

ByteDance has stated it has no plans to sell TikTok, renouncing the lawsuit, which is expected to go to the US Supreme Court, as its sole chance to avert a ban.

"There is no question: the Act will force a shutdown of TikTok by January 19, 2025," the lawsuit said, "silencing (those) who use the platform to communicate in ways that cannot be replicated elsewhere."

Earlier, TikTok CEO Shou Chew said in a video response that the company isn't going anywhere.&nbsp;

"Rest assured, we aren't going anywhere. The facts and the Constitution are on our side, and we expect to prevail again," he said in the video&nbsp;posted on X.

Finally weighing in on the 2024 US Presidential elections, Allan Lichtman, who has earned the title of "Nostradamus of US presidential elections," says that incumbent President Joe Biden has an edge over former President Donald Trump.

Finally weighing in on the 2024 US Presidential elections, Allan Lichtman, who has earned the title of "Nostradamus of US presidential elections," says that incumbent President Joe Biden has an edge over former President Donald Trump. Lichtman has acquired the nickname of Nostradamus, a 16th-century French astrologer, whose forecasts are still well-recognised today. Lichtman had accurately predicted the outcome of nine of the previous 10 elections. With the use of a method he created, dubbed "13 Keys to the White House," Lichtman, a history professor at the American University in Washington, has predicted the outcome of almost every US presidential election since 1984. "The 13 keys are simple to use: if 8 or more of the 13 keys are true for the incumbent party, its candidate will win the election—but if fewer than 8 are true, the challenger will win," the American University website description of the method reads. Also read: Trump blasts Biden, says 'every single thing he touches turns to sh**,' pledges world peace Lichtman told NDTV that he has not made a final prediction yet, but according to the '13 keys to the White House' model which has been correct since 1984 - 10 elections in a row, a lot would have to go wrong for Joe Biden to lose this election as he is just down by just two keys. Current polls suggest that President Joe Biden is trailing behind former President Donald Trump. He stressed that it is too early to predict the likely conclusion of the 2024 campaign between Biden and Trump. What are the '13 Keys to the White House'? Here are the 13 keys to the White House as written on the American University website: Party mandate: After the midterm elections, the incumbent party holds more seats in the US House of Representatives than after the previous midterm elections. Contest: There is no serious contest for the incumbent party nomination. Incumbency: The incumbent party candidate is the sitting president. Third party: There is no significant third party or independent campaign. Short term economy: The economy is not in recession during the election campaign. Long term economy: Real per capita economic growth during the term equals or exceeds mean growth during the previous two terms. Policy change: The incumbent administration effects major changes in national policy. Social unrest: There is no sustained social unrest during the term. Scandal: The incumbent administration is untainted by major scandal. Foreign/military failure: The incumbent administration suffers no major failure in foreign or military affairs. Foreign/military success: The incumbent administration achieves a major success in foreign or military affairs. Incumbent charisma: The incumbent party candidate is charismatic or a national hero. Challenger charisma: The challenging party candidate is not charismatic or a national hero. (With inputs from agencies)

The US has shared astonishing evidence along with the UK - it indicated a strong possibility that the Covid virus originated from a Chinese lab in January 2021.

The governor of the US state of South Dakota who was already under fire for admitting to killing her 14-month-old dog and boasting about it in her book, is stirring up controversy once again. On Sunday (May 5), she said Commander, the United States President Joe Biden’s dog, should also suffer a similar fate as her pet Cricket.&nbsp;

<h2>What did she say?</h2>

The Republican governor appeared on CBS’ ‘Face the Nation’,&nbsp;and suggested that Commander should also have been put down.&nbsp;

The Biden family’s German shepherd has been banished from the White House to an undisclosed location after <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/us-president-joe-bidens-dog-bit-secret-service-members-at-least-24-times-in-less-than-a-year-692737">reports</a> that he bit Secret Service agents on 24 separate occasions between October 2022 and July 2023.&nbsp;

“Joe Biden’s dog has attacked 24 Secret Service people,” Noem told interviewer, Margaret Brennan. She added, “So how many people is enough people to be attacked and dangerously hurt before you make a decision on a dog?”

During the interview, she also defended killing her 14-month-old dog Cricket and a goat, which according to her upcoming book she also shot the same day as “a choice I made over 20 years ago” to “protect people.”

In late April, Noem sparked outrage among Democrats and Republicans alike after she admitted to killing her dog saying that it had an “aggressive personality” and described Cricket as an “untrainable,” “dangerous,” and “less than worthless…as a hunting dog”.

The possible running mate for the presumptive Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump made a similar suggestion in her book, “No Going Back,” according to an advance copy obtained by CNN, saying that if she were president, she’d ensure Commander “was nowhere on the grounds.”

“What would I do if I was president on the first day in office in 2025? Thanks for asking. I happen to have a list. The first thing I’d do is make sure Joe Biden’s dog was nowhere on the grounds (‘Commander, say hello to Cricket for me’). But my dog, Foster, would sure be welcome. He comes with me to the capitol all the time and loves everyone,” Noem wrote in her book.&nbsp;

<h2>Trump ‘disgusted’ by Noem’s story</h2>

Notably, since Noem admitted to killing her 14-month-old dog she has faced criticism not only from Democrats but also people from her own party. It also seems like the story may cost her the chance of being Trump’s VP.&nbsp;

A report by Rolling Stone magazine citing sources said that the former president has been “privately trashing” Noem for killing her puppy during conversations with close political allies and other confidants.&nbsp;

Some of the sources, according to the magazine, said they are disclosing these details because they want the South Dakota governor to be “permanently eliminated” from Trump’s vice presidential shortlist.&nbsp;

Others said it was simply because Trump had been talking about Noem’s story so many times it was “‘getting kind of ridiculous’ how ‘disgusted’ the former president sounded about this and how much he has been ‘taunting’ Noem behind her back,” reported the Rolling Stone.&nbsp;

Presidential Medal of Freedom 2024: Biden to award 19 politicians, activists, and others

A winner of seven Olympic gold medals, a leader of the Mississippi civil rights struggle and a pioneer of television's tabloid talk show genre are part of this year's class of Presidential Medal of Freedom recipients.

US&nbsp;President Joe Biden extended the highest US&nbsp;civilian award to 19 people, including Team USA swimmer Katie Ledecky, the assassinated civil rights leader Medgar Evers and television host Phil Donahue.

"Don't let age get in your way," Biden, the oldest U.S. president at 81, said to Ledecky, 27, as he encouraged her to seek more medals during an awards ceremony at the White House on Friday. "Katie, age is just a number, kid."

The honoree list plays special homage to "firsts" in their field, including the "Everything Everywhere All at Once" actress Michelle Yeoh, who was the first Asian to win the Academy Award for Best Actress; Ellen Ochoa, the first Hispanic woman in space; and Jim Thorpe, the versatile athlete who became the first Native American to win an Olympic gold medal in 1912.

Biden also celebrated some key political allies in the Democratic Party, from Representative Jim Clyburn, who rescued his 2020 presidential primary bid with an endorsement in South Carolina, to Nancy Pelosi, who shepherded his legislative agenda through Congress as House of Representatives speaker until last year.

Also included are several one-time presidential candidates, former Senator Elizabeth Dole, former Vice President Al Gore, one-time Secretary of State John Kerry and previous New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

"After winning the popular vote, he accepted the outcome of a disputed presidential election for the sake of unity and trust in our institutions," Biden said of Gore's concession to George W. Bush in the 2000 election, a jab at ex-President Donald Trump, who has never conceded his 2020 loss to Biden.

"That to me was amazing what you did, Al. I won't go into that." The remark drew some laughter.

"In my view, the last two guys should be standing here at this podium," Biden said of Gore and Kerry.

Indian foreign minister S&nbsp;Jaishankar dismissed US President Joe Biden's comment that xenophobia was hobbling the South Asian nation's economic growth, as reported by The Economic Times on Saturday (May 4).

During a round table hosted by the newspaper on Friday (May 3), Jaishankar said that India's economy is not faltering and that it has been a society that is very open.

"This is the reason we have the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which is to open up doors for people who are in trouble. I think we should be open to people who have the need to come to India, who have a claim to come to India," Jaishankar said, referring to a law that allows immigrants who have fled persecution from neighbouring countries to become citizens.

Earlier this week, Biden stated that xenophobia in China, Japan, and India was impeding economic growth in those countries. He contrasted this with the positive impact of immigration on the US economy, highlighting that welcoming immigrants contributes to America's economic vitality.

"One of the reasons why our economy's growing is because of you and many others. Why? Because we welcome immigrants," Biden said during a fundraising event for his 2024 re-election campaign, which coincided with the start of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) forecast last month that growth in Asia's three largest economies would slow in 2024 from the previous year.

The IMF also forecast that the US economy would grow 2.7%, slightly brisker than its 2.5% rate last year. Many economists attribute the upbeat forecast&nbsp;partly to migrants expanding the country's labour force.

<h2>US Immigration</h2>

Concern over illegal migration has become a top issue for the US voters ahead of November's presidential election.

In a recent interview with the TIME magazine, Republican presidential nominee and former president Donald Trump suggested that if elected, he would take up a massive deportation program to deport about 15-20 million people from the US, in what Trump described were "illegal migrants".&nbsp;

Biden has opposed the rhetoric of his Republican opponent Donald Trump as anti-immigrant.&nbsp;

Indian foreign minister S Jaishankar dismissed US President Joe Biden's comment that xenophobia was hobbling the South Asian nation's economic growth, as reported by The Economic Times on Saturday (May 4).

Indian foreign minister S Jaishankar dismissed US President Joe Biden's comment that xenophobia was hobbling the South Asian nation's economic growth, as reported by The Economic Times on Saturday (May 4). Also read: Biden claims 'xenophobia' stalling economic growth in India, China, Japan Earlier this week, Biden stated that xenophobia in China, Japan, and India was impeding economic growth in those countries. Also read | Jaishankar expresses concern over rise in deaths of Indian students overseas The IMF also forecast that the US economy would grow 2.7%, slightly brisker than its 2.5% rate last year. Many economists attribute the upbeat forecast partly to migrants expanding the country's labour force. US Immigration Concern over illegal migration has become a top issue for the US voters ahead of November's presidential election. In a recent interview with the TIME magazine, Republican presidential nominee and former president Donald Trump suggested that if elected, he would take up a massive deportation program to deport about 15-20 million people from the US, in what Trump described were "illegal migrants". Biden has opposed the rhetoric of his Republican opponent Donald Trump as anti-immigrant. The United States on Wednesday (May 1) accused Russia of having used "the chemical weapon chloropicrin against Ukrainian forces" in violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention.

The statement from the US State Department further alleged that Moscow has also been using "riot control agents (tear gas) as a method of warfare in Ukraine, also in violation of the CWC."

The statement also details US sanctions against more than 280 individuals and entities "to impose additional costs on Russia for both its foreign aggression and internal repression."

Furthermore, it adds that among these are more than 80 entities and individuals, "including those engaged in the development of Russia’s future energy, metals, and mining production and export capacity; sanctions evasion and circumvention; and furthering Russia's ability to wage its war against Ukraine."

<h2>'Not an isolated incident'</h2>

The statement asserts that the use of such chemical weapons is far from an "isolated incident" and "is probably driven by Russian forces' desire to dislodge Ukrainian forces from fortified positions and achieve tactical gains on the battlefield."

Slamming Moscow, the statement further states, "Russia's ongoing disregard for its obligations to the CWC comes from the same playbook as its operations to poison Aleksey Navalny and Sergei and Yulia Skripal with Novichok nerve agents."

Determining the illegal use of chemical weapons and riot weapons, America said it was imposing sanctions on three Russian state entities linked to Moscow's development of chemical and biological weapons. One of the entities is a specialised military unit that reportedly facilitated the use of chloropicrin against Ukrainian troops.

Furthermore, four Russian companies that support the three entities were also sanctioned.

Separately, the US Treasury has imposed sanctions on three entities and two individuals who were involved in buying items for Russian military institutes linked to the country's chemical and biological weapons programmes.

These sanctions freeze any US-based assets belonging to the sanctioned entities and generally prohibit Americans from doing business with them.

<h2>What is Chloropicrin?</h2>

Chloropicrin is classified as a banned choking agent by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). The Hague-based organisation as per Reuters, was established to enforce and oversee compliance with the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) of 1993.

One of the earliest instances of the use of this banned chemical weapon was during World War I when German forces fired it against Allied troops.

Former United States president Donald Trump on Tuesday (Apr 30) compared the ongoing university protests in the country to the January 6 Capitol attack. He lamented that the pro-Palestine protesters at Columbia University could be treated leniently than the rioters who stormed the Capitol in 2021. Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, spoke in the hallway outside a Manhattan courtroom where his criminal trial in hush money case is taking place. The former president questioned whether student demonstrators would be treated the same way as his supporters who attacked the Capitol on Jan 6. Also read: Blinken meets Israeli PM Netanyahu, talks about Gaza aid, ceasefire and more The Gaza war began with the Hamas attack on October 7 that led to the deaths of about 1,170 people in Israel, according to an AFP tally of Israeli official figures. In retaliation, Israel vowed to wipe out Hamas and launched an offensive that has killed at least 34,356 people in Gaza so far, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. Palestinian militants also took some 250 hostages on October 7. Israel estimates 129 remain in Gaza, including 34 believed to be dead. Now, a truce deal is hanging by a thread, with Israel demanding their release, and Hamas asking for a complete ceasefire. The six-month-old war has deteriorated humanitarian conditions in the Gaza Strip. People struggling for food, clean water, medicines, and other basic amenities. Fears are also looming over a possible invasion of Rafah, where more than one million people have sought refuge from months of Israeli bombardment, which will be catastrophic. Also read: NYPD removes pro-Palestinian protesters from Columbia University, dozens arrested Now, global calls are being made, urging both sides to finalise a hostage deal and ceasefire, which appears to be unlikely as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said to invade Rafah "with or without a deal". People around the world are showing frustration over both situations - hostages and the humanitarian crisis in the Strip, with top US campuses becoming centre-stage of demonstrations. The war has sparked anger and division among people. In US universities, some Jewish students feel targeted and abused while others have taken leading roles in demonstrations. Israel-Hamas war has put West Asia on the brink of a broader conflict, even fears of a nuclear threat, with recent escalation involving Iran, but the student protests over the Gaza war have turned into a new US political battleground. President Joe Biden is pushing hard for a truce, which he hopes would be the extinguisher to douse the flames of war besides serving as a much-needed force for his presidency. Otherwise, the university protests would most likely become a burning issue in the presidential elections, scheduled for later this year. One of the reasons why Secretary of State Antony Blinken is pressing for truce, while reiterating US opposition to an Israeli assault on the crowded Gaza city of Rafah. Trump and other prominent Republicans are not shying away from seizing the political opportunity the ongoing campus protests have provided. Watch: Why has Netanyahu failed to secure the release of Israeli hostages in Gaza War so far? × Clashes erupt at UCLA campus The protests have intensified with clashes breaking out at pro-Palestinian demonstrations on the campus of the University of California, Los Angeles on Wednesday (May 1), forcing police to take action. At UCLA, a tent encampment was set up last week. Local media reported that the clashes erupted between rival pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli groups. This comes as dozens of universities around the US, including Columbia University and New York City, struggle to contain similar protests. In a post on social platform X, LA police said, "At the request of UCLA, due to multiple acts of violence within the large encampment on their campus, the LAPD is responding to assist UCLA PD, and other law enforcement agencies, to restore order and maintain public safety." Authorities have also made dozens of arrests on campuses across the nation after skirmishes between pro-Israeli and pro-Palestinian demonstrators. The initial days of protests were peaceful, but they turned violent with an expansion of the size of the pro-Palestinian encampment at UCLA in recent days. The counter-protesters have become increasingly vocal and visible on the campus. In a report by the news agency Reuters, Mary Osako, who is UCLA's vice chancellor for UCLA strategic communications, said that chaos erupted when some demonstrators broke through a barrier that the school had set up to separate the two factions. Images and videos shared on social media showed protesters and counter-protesters clashing with sticks and tearing down metal barricades. Some were seen launching fireworks or hurling objects at each other in the dark, which lit up with laser pointers and bright flashlights. UCLA Chancellor Gene D Block warned ahead of clashes that protesters including "both members of the UCLA community and others unaffiliated with our campus" had set up a camp last week. "Many of the demonstrators, as well as counter-demonstrators who have come to the area, have been peaceful in their activism," Block wrote in a letter posted on the university website on Tuesday. "But the tactics of others have frankly been shocking and shameful. We have seen instances of violence. These incidents have put many on our campus, especially our Jewish students, in a state of anxiety and fear," he added. (With inputs from agencies)

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Monday (Apr 29) expressed optimism that it was "not too late" for Ukraine to win its ongoing conflict with Russia, despite the significant challenges the war-torn nation faces.

Ukrainian forces, as per AFP, have been struggling in the face of Russian advances for months. The nation dependent on foreign military aid had to wait for stalled weapons deliveries from allies even as Russian troops steadily inched forward along the frontline.

<h2>Outgunned, 'but not too late'</h2>

During a press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the NATO chief said, "Ukraine has been outgunned for months, forced to ration its ammunition… But it's not too late for Ukraine to prevail."
