United States President Joe Biden did not hold back as he roasted his predecessor and rival for the upcoming presidential election Donald Trump, during the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner, on Saturday (Apr 27).&nbsp;

Meanwhile, hundreds of pro-Palestinian protesters gathered outside the venue chanting “shame on you” as Biden and Washington’s political and media elites arrived.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Sleepy Don’</h2>

The US president began the roast at the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner with multiple jokes directed at Trump including calling him “sleepy Don,” a reference to the nickname “sleepy Joe” that the former president had given Biden previously.&nbsp;

The gathering of hundreds of top journalists, politicians, and celebrities in Washington proved to be a good platform for the president ahead of the upcoming November elections, where he also&nbsp;admonished his Republican rival for his immaturity.&nbsp;

“The 2024 election is in full swing and, yes, age is an issue,” said Biden, 81, who is currently the oldest US president. He added, “I’m a grown man running against a six-year-old.”&nbsp;

“Age is the only thing we have in common. My vice president actually endorses me,” Biden said referring to Trump’s falling out with his former VP Mike Pence, who defied him and certified the results of the 2020 elections.&nbsp;

The US president also poked fun at Trump’s ongoing hush money trial where the former president was seen at the Manhattan courthouse day after day since it began on April 15. “Donald has had a few tough days lately. You might call it Stormy weather,” said Biden.&nbsp;

The event, which is often referred to as Washington’s “nerd prom,” was hosted by Saturday Night Live (SNL) cast member Colin Jost.&nbsp;

On a serious note, Biden also offered some advice to the journalists gathered calling them to “rise up to the seriousness of the moment”.&nbsp;

“I’m sincerely not asking you to take sides,” said the US president. “I’m asking you to rise up to the seriousness of the moment. Move past the horse race numbers and the gotcha moments and the distractions, the sideshows that have come to dominate and sensationalize our politics, and focus on what's actually at stake.”

<h2>‘Really bad’</h2>

But it seems like Trump was less than amused by the jokes made at his expense as he took to his social media platform Truth Social and called the annual “really bad.”

“The White House Correspondents’ Dinner was really bad. Colin Jost BOMBED, and Crooked Joe was an absolute disaster! Doesn’t get much worse than this!” the former president wrote.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Shame on you!’</h2>

The annual dinner was also marked by hundreds of pro-Palestinian protesters draped in the traditional Palestinian keffiyeh chanting “shame on you!” as Washington’s elites hurried inside for the dinner.

“Western media we see you, and all the horrors that you hide,” crowds chanted at one point, as per the Associated Press.

On April 24, US President Joe Biden signed a bill into law that could ban Chinese social media app TikTok. The law requires the app to either disassociate from its Chinese parent ByteDance or face a complete ban.

On April 24, US President Joe Biden signed a bill into law that could ban Chinese social media app TikTok. The law requires the app to either disassociate from its Chinese parent ByteDance or face a complete ban. While the ban may still take years to come into effect, it has already infuriated the TikTok community. Many creators, having following in millions, have spoken against the law, accusing the government of ruining their livelihood. Several creators recently travelled to the Capitol to oppose the law and stage protests. “You’re taking away our First Amendment rights,” said creator Ophelia Nichols, known as “shoelover99” on TikTok. The TikToker has over 12.5 million followers, popular for her lifestyle content. “TikTok allows small businesses and creators to find their people in their community,” Ophelia was quoted as saying by CNBC. “People don’t understand. This is a community. It’s a family. Whatever it is that you enjoy or that makes you smile, you will find someone else on the app that loves that too,” she adds. Anti-govt movement A movement has erupted on the app itself, where creators have posted above 585,000 videos with the hashtags #KeepTikTok and #SaveTikTok. Some are accusing the Biden administration of being hypocritical. “There’s a core hypocrisy to the Biden administration supporting the TikTok ban while at the same time using TikTok for his campaign purposes, said Kahlil Greene, who has more than 650,000 followers and is known on TikTok as the “Gen Z Historian.” Also read: TikTok CEO expresses confidence amidst US ban threat: We aren’t going anywhere “I think it illustrates that he and his people know the power and necessity of TikTok.” TikTok over the last few years has become a major source of news and entertainment for the American people. How powerful are creators? The app has over 170 million users in the US alone. A Pew Research Center survey found last November that about a third of under-30 US adults relied on TikTok for their daily dose of news. This shows the staggering intensity of influence that the TikTokers wield on the US audience. Also read: US Senate passes bill to ban TikTok if its owner ByteDance fails to sell it The under-30 adult US population is thus most likely to oppose a ban on the app, as per an AP-NORC poll conducted in January. However, amongst all US adults, only 30 per cent are likely to oppose the ban. ByteDance says no plan to sell the app Meanwhile, ByteDance in a statement clarified it has no plans to sell the app in the US. TikTok CEO Shou Chew said in a video response that the company isn't going anywhere. "Rest assured, we aren't going anywhere. The facts and the Constitution are on our side, and we expect to prevail again," he said in the video, posted on X. (With inputs from agencies)

The US State Department said Wednesday that America sent long-range ATACMS missiles to Ukraine for use inside its territory, and the weapons arrived in the country this month.&nbsp;

The Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) were part of a March aid package for Ukraine, not the one just approved by Congress and signed by Biden. But the details on ATACMS came on the same day Biden signed the bill to provide $61 billion in new aid for Ukraine.

US President Joe Biden seemed to make yet another gaffe during a speech to a trade union conference in Washington, DC on Wednesday (Apr 24). Biden was reading off a teleprompter and he mistakenly included the instructions in the middle of his speech, resulting in an awkward applause line.

"I see an America where we defend democracy, not diminish it. I see an America where we protect freedoms, not take them away. I see an economy that grows a lot in the bottom up where the wealthy pay their fair share, so we can have child care, paid leave and so much more, and still reduce the federal deficit and increase economic folks," Biden said.

"Imagine what we could do next. Four more years, pause," he added.

Biden went to the conference to receive an endorsement from the North American Building Trades Unions. Members of North America's Building Trades Unions intervened after his gaffe and said "four more years" together.

Eleven Republicans, who had allegedly acted as fake electors in the 2020 presidential election by submitting a document to Congress that falsely declared victory of former president Donald Trump over US President Joe Biden in Arizona, were indicted by Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes on Wednesday (April 24).

The Republicans were charged with conspiracy, fraud and forgery, as per the press release issued by the office of the attorney general. The 11 Republicans indicted in Arizona included then-Arizona Republican Party Chair Kelli Ward, state legislators Anthony Kern and Jake Hoffman; Michael Ward, Kelli Ward’s husband; Tyler Bowyer, the Republican National Committee's Arizona committeeman and the chief operating officer of the Trump-aligned Turning Point USA; Greg Safsten, the former Arizona GOP executive director; former U.S. Senate candidate Jim Lamon; Robert Montgomery, the former head of the Cochise County GOP; and Republican Party activists Samuel Moorhead, Nancy Cottle and Loraine Pellegrino. In December 2020, these 11 Republicans gathered in Arizona and signed documents which falsely announced Trump's victory in Arizona, while claiming that they were “duly elected and qualified” electors. "Today, Arizona's 11 Republican presidential electors met to cast their votes for President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence," wrote the Arizona GOP on X, in December 2020. "With ongoing legal challenges to the 2020 presidential election still being heard in the courts across the country holding hearings on election fraud and voting irregularities, it is imperative that the proper elections are counted by Congress," he added. "We conducted a thorough and professional investigation over the past 13 months into the fake electors scheme in our state," said Mayes, in a video while announcing the charges. "All of them had previously been forcibly deported to Russia, but thanks to our friendly Qatar's mediation efforts, they have been released," said Zelensky. However, he did not address Russian claims about 48 children being exchanged.

The United States Senate passed controversial legislation on Wednesday (April 24) which can lead to the banning of the massively popular social media app TikTok in the country if its China-based parent company ByteDance doesn't sell it.

The United States Senate passed controversial legislation on Wednesday (April 24) which can lead to the banning of the massively popular social media app TikTok in the country if its China-based parent company ByteDance doesn't sell it. The bill will now reach the table of US President Joe Biden who has already said that he will sign it into law as soon as it is cleared by Congress. Once the bill is signed by President Biden, ByteDance will have to get its Chinese officials's approval to complete a forced sale, something which China has vowed to oppose. Also Read: European Union warns of TikTok Lite ban over ‘addictive’ reward-to-watch feature The measure against TikTok was included in the $95 billion worth of foreign aid package which includes military assistance to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan that has been cleared by the Congress. It received massive support from the lawmakers as 79 Senators voted for it and 18 voted against it. TikTok came under unwanted scrutiny not only because it is addictive for users but also because of its Chinese owner ByteDance. Why does the US Senate want to ban TikTok? The US lawmakers have been pressurising ByteDance to sell its stake in TikTok since they fear that TikTok or ByteDance can share data about the users of the United States with the government of China. The chances of TikTok becoming a trove of data of about millions of US users has left lawmakers worried. TikTok, in a statement, said that it is "unfortunate" that lawmakers are "using the cover of important foreign and humanitarian assistance to once again jam through a ban bill that would trample the free speech rights of 170 million Americans, devastate 7 million businesses, and shutter a platform that contributes $24 billion to the U.S. economy, annually." When does TikTok's endgame clock start? After the bill is signed by Biden, ByteDance will have 270 days to sell TikTok. In this case, if it appears that ByteDance is near divestment at the end of its nine-month period, an additional 90 days can be authorised by the president to finalise the deals. What is the Biden administration's take on the TikTok bill? In a statement, President Biden said that he will approve the bill once it is passed by the Senate. "I will sign this bill into law and address the American people as soon as it reaches my desk tomorrow so we can begin sending weapons and equipment to Ukraine this week," said Biden. "The need is urgent: for Ukraine, facing unrelenting bombardment from Russia; for Israel, which just faced unprecedented attacks from Iran; for refugees and those impacted by conflicts and natural disasters around the world, including in Gaza, Sudan, and Haiti; and for our partners seeking security and stability in the Indo-Pacific," he added. Who are the likely buyers of TikTok? Microsoft, Oracle or private equity groups are to be the likely bidders, said Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives, as reported by CBS News. Meanwhile, former Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin informed CNBC that he wishes to assemble an investment group to bid for TikTok. Watch: Malaysia urges Meta and TikTok to tackle harmful content on platforms Ives, however, hinted that ByteDance is not likely to sell TikTok with its core algorithms as well as the important software that gives video recommendations to users based on their interests. "The value of TikTok would dramatically change without the algorithms and makes the ultimate sale/divestiture of TikTok a very complex endeavour, with many potential strategic/financial bidders waiting anxiously for this process to kick off," said Ives, in a research note. How will other social media platforms benefit from the ban? If the bill becomes a law, TikTok's rivals like Meta are likely to benefit from it. According to Wedbush Securities analyst, nearly 60 per cent of TikTok users are likely to shift to Meta's Instagram and Facebook if a ban is imposed on TikTok. Google is also likely to benefit from this ban. (With inputs from agencies)

United States President Joe Biden on Sunday (April 21) warned of an “alarming surge of antisemitism” in a statement which was released over the approaching Jewish holiday of Passover while referring to the student protests at Columbia University.

The Senate voted on Friday (April 19) to renew surveillance authority bill which according to the US government is important for combating terrorism. Lawmakers voted 60-34 to reauthorise Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which was enacted by the House late last week.

The Senate voted on Friday (April 19) to renew surveillance authority bill which according to the US government is important for combating terrorism. Lawmakers voted 60-34 to reauthorise Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which was enacted by the House late last week. The House passed the bill when a fresh version was introduced calling for a two-year reauthorisation rather than five years, which helped assuage conservatives who had earlier opposed the proposal. A two-year extension would allow former President Donald Trump to change the law if he wins the 2024 presidential election. The final vote happened after the Senate rejected six amendments from progressive and conservative senators who argued that the surveillance powers were overly wide and wanted protections for Americans' civil liberties and privacy. Also read: US agrees to withdraw troops from Niger amid protests The Biden administration and FISA advocates had cautioned that even a temporary delay may harm the intelligence-gathering operation. Though senators missed the midnight deadline to reauthorise FISA Section 702, they voted to do so minutes later. “In the nick of time, bipartisanship has prevailed here in the Senate,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-NY. “It wasn’t easy, people had many different views, but we all know one thing: letting FISA expire would have been dangerous. It’s an important part of our national security to stop acts of terror, drug trafficking, and violent extremism. Thank you to all my Senate colleagues on both sides of the aisle for their good work in getting this done,” he added. What is the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA)? Under FISA Section 702, the government collects enormous amounts of internet and cell phone data on foreign targets. Every year, hundreds of thousands of Americans' information is accidentally gathered and accessed without a warrant. Critics argue that the 'backdoor search' violates the privacy of Americans and that the bill's powers are too expansive.

United States President Joe Biden took the world by surprise and left the White House in the lurch after claiming that his uncle was most likely eaten by cannibals in Papua New Guinea during World War II.

United States President Joe Biden took the world by surprise and left the White House in the lurch after claiming that his uncle was most likely eaten by cannibals in Papua New Guinea during World War II. As reported by Western media outlets, 81-year-old Biden said that his uncle's plane was shot down over Papua New Guinea during World War II. He further emphasised how this place is known for cannibals. The statement was made by Biden while he was paying tribute to his uncle Ambrose Finnegan. Biden said his body was never found and suspected that it was eaten by cannibals. Also Read: 'Committed to working with Pakistan,' US President Joe Biden writes to Pakistan PM for the first time “My uncle, they called him – Ambrose, they called him Bosie, and he became an Army Air Corps, before the Air Force came along, he flew those single-engine planes as a reconnaissance over war zones. And he got shot down in New Guinea, and they never found the body because there used to be a lot of cannibals – for real – in that part of New Guinea,” said the president. White House reacts to President Biden's cannibal remarks Clarifying Biden's statement, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Thursday (April 18) accepted that Finnegan died after his plane crashed into the Pacific Ocean amid World War II, which implied that he was not eaten by cannibals. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Jean-Pierre said, “You saw the president, he was incredibly proud of his uncle’s service in uniform. You saw him at the war memorial. It was incredibly emotional and important to him." “You saw him respond to all of you when asked about the moment yesterday and his uncle, who lost his life when the military aircraft he was on crashed in the Pacific after taking off near New Guinea," the spokesperson added. What did the defence report say about Biden's uncle? The claims made by Biden also fail to match the account published by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency. As per the report, “For unknown reasons, this plane was forced to ditch in the ocean off the north coast of New Guinea. Both engines failed at low altitude, and the aircraft's nose hit the water hard.” Watch: US-China ties: Joe Biden calls China 'xenophobic' while China calls out US' hypocrisy The report stated that no trace of lost crew members and missing aircraft was found by an aerial search party. “Second Lieutenant Ambrose J. Finnegan entered the U.S. Army Air Forces from Pennsylvania and served in Headquarters, Fifth Air Force. He was the passenger on this Havoc when it was lost. He has not been associated with any remains recovered from the area after the war and is still unaccounted-for. Today, Second Lieutenant Finnegan is memorialized on the Walls of the Missing at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines,” read the report. (With inputs from agencies)

Fifteen members of the Kennedy family endorsed Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee and current President Joe Biden at a Philadelphia campaign event. Kennedy, 70, son of the slain US senator and presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, made his name as an environmental lawyer, before becoming known as an anti-vaccine advocate with an eclectic mix of political views. Many in Kennedy Jr's family have broken with him over his views. A recent poll by Reuters/Ipsos showed that the 70-year-old, running as an independent candidate in the elections, was backed by 15 per cent of the registered voters, versus 39 per cent for Biden and 38 per cent for presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. God bless all of you. God bless America and please welcome President Joe Biden," she added and called Trump the most anti-democratic president ever. US President Joe Biden, known for occasional verbal gaffes, including misstatements or slips of the tongue that often attract media attention, has made yet another error - this time of a historic proportion that has triggered scrutiny of whether he be able to lead the country, if elected in office once again. This comes during an interview with Reshad Hudson from Nexstar Media, where President Biden mistakenly referred to the Israeli city of Haifa as Rafah, a city in Gaza.

When discussing his approach to appealing to pro-Palestinian voters post-Israel-Hamas conflict, Biden said, "I've been meeting with them, number one.&nbsp;

"Number two, I made it clear that we have to vastly increase the amount of food, water, and healthcare going into Gaza."&nbsp;

He then added, "And I made it clear to Israelis – don’t move on Haifa." The intended reference was to Rafah, a city located in the southern Gaza Strip, bordering Egypt and also a major crossing point.

Ukraine has warned that there will be a "third world war" if it loses the conflict with Russia.&nbsp;

Speaking to BBC on Wednesday (Apr 18) in Washington, Ukraine's Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal voiced the warning while urging the United States Congress to pass a long-stalled foreign aid bill.

<h2>'Careful optimism'</h2>

Shmyhal, as per BBC, expressed "careful optimism" that the US lawmakers would pass the measure that has $61 billion earmarked for Ukraine.

"We need this money yesterday, not tomorrow, not today," said the Ukrainian leader about the much-awaited US assistance.

"If we will not protect… Ukraine will fall," he added. "So the global, the global system of security will be destroyed… and all the world will need to find… a new system of security," he further said.

"Or, there will be many conflicts, many such kinds of wars, and in the end of the day, it could lead to the Third World War," warned Shmyhal.

Earlier, too, Ukraine has voiced similar alarming warnings about the possible consequences its defeat in the battle with Russia will bring. Just last year, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had warned that after Ukraine, Russia would move on to invade Poland, triggering World War III.

<h2>Much-needed help for Ukraine</h2>

The US House of Representatives will vote on the aid package on Saturday (Apr 20). It also includes billions in funding for Israel as well as Taiwan.

It&nbsp;could finally get&nbsp;Ukraine&nbsp;the much-needed help to continue the battle against&nbsp;Russia.

The bill would allocate $61 billion to Ukraine, and more than $26 billion to Israel that has&nbsp;waged&nbsp;a war against Hamas militants in Gaza and another against its arch-foe Iran. It also includes $9.2 billion in humanitarian aid for Gaza, a key requirement laid down by Democrats.&nbsp;Additionally, it will provide self-ruled Taiwan with $8 billion in aid.
