"Continuing a tradition from previous years, the President will light a Diya lamp in the Blue Room before his remarks," the White House said. After this he would deliver remarks before a gathering of Indian Americans, for whom he is hosting a reception. This would be President Biden's last Diwali reception at the White House as he is not running for the presidential election. "Among the President's introductions will be a video message from Sunita "Suni" Williams, a decorated NASA astronaut and retired Navy Captain. She recorded a video greeting from the International Space Station, where she took over as Commander in September," the White House said. 'And he's talking about illegals': Biden slams Musk over 'illegal worker' claims; Tesla CEO hits back

US President Joe Biden on Saturday (Oct 26) expressed hope that Israel's recent strikes on Iran could mark "the end" of the months-long period of escalations. He said to reporters, "It looks like they didn't hit anything other than military targets."

"I hope that this is the end," stated Biden, adding that Israel had given him a heads-up about the attack.

Biden's statement comes as his administration intensified its efforts to broker a ceasefire deal that includes both Gaza and Lebanon.

In remarks that followed the strikes on Iran, Israeli President Isaac Herzog hailed the United States as a "true ally" of Israel when it comes to mutual cooperation.

Applauding the strikes he said: "I especially wish to thank our great friend the USA for being a true ally, and for the overt and covert cooperation."

President Joe Biden apologised directly to a Native American community on Friday (Oct 25) for the United States'150-year history of running abusive Native American boarding schools.

Biden spoke to the Gila River Indian Community in Arizona, becoming to first US president to issue an apology for the program.

In his speech, Biden acknowledged the physical, emotional and sexual abuse suffered by hundreds of Native American children in those schools as well as the toll intergenerational trauma has taken on families and communities.

He called the apology "long overdue" and called the program "will always be a significant mark of sham - a blot on American history."

From 1819 through the 1970s, the United States implemented policies establishing and supporting hundreds of American Indian boarding schools across the nation.

The purpose of these federal boarding schools was to culturally assimilate American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian children by forcibly removing them from their families, communities, languages, religions and cultural beliefs, the Interior Department said.

US Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, the first Native American to be a cabinet secretary, had launched a probe to recognise the troubled legacy of federal Indian boarding school policies. An investigative report by the department found that at least 973 children died in these schools.

What do you give a wealthy client who has everything? Well, Wall Street has come up with a brilliant idea. A Bloomberg report shows the solution is a loss-making investment.

That's the idea behind the latest strategy on Wall Street. This is a clever twist on the well-known tax-loss harvesting technique, a contentious aspect of wealth management for many years.

The practice of selling losing investments to reduce the tax owed on profits made elsewhere in a portfolio is known as tax-loss harvesting.

Although it's a useful instrument frequently used in equities ownership, it has a significant drawback. An investor doesn't always have a loss-making investment. This can be particularly true in the US stock market, which has tripled in the last decade and continues to set new milestones.

Anyone concerned about growing wealth disparity will likely be alarmed by this slick Wall Street move. Most investors cannot afford tax long-short methods. Like with other tax-loss harvesting tactics, the wealthiest often reap the rewards from such tricks.

Americans do not pay capital gains taxes until they decide to sell an asset. That rule has withstood several challenges in recent months. President Joe Biden has suggested taxing the unrealised earnings of the ultra-wealthy.

While Kamala Harris has previously supported Biden's concept, she has not stated whether she will pursue such legislation.

Tax loss harvesting: Money managers' clever new trick to cut taxes for rich clients

Pakistan criticised the move by US lawmakers to urge President Joe Biden to press Islamabad for the release of Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and former Prime Minister on Thursday (October 25). Pakistan’s Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch stated the action was “contrary to inter-state conduct and diplomatic norms.”

Speaking at her regular press briefing, Baloch addressed questions about a recent letter from Democratic members of the US House of Representatives to President Biden, which called for his intervention in Pakistani politics. Over 60 Congress members requested that the US leverage its influence with Pakistan to facilitate Khan’s release from prison.

"Pakistan values its bilateral relations with the United States. We believe in constructive dialogue and engagement to address any concern," Baloch said, adding, "However, comments on Pakistan's domestic affairs are contrary to inter-state conduct and diplomatic norms. We believe such letters and statements are counter-productive and not in line with positive dynamics of Pakistan-US bilateral relations."

Imran Khan has been in detention since August last year, following his conviction in the Toshakhana criminal case and other cases as Pakistan approaches its February 8 elections—a conviction he contests.

In their letter, the Democratic lawmakers urged Biden to focus on human rights as part of US policy towards Pakistan. They wrote, "We write today to urge you to use the United States' substantial leverage with Pakistan's government to secure the release of political prisoners including former Prime Minister Khan and curtail widespread human rights abuses."

They also appealed for US embassy officials to visit Khan, who is currently held at Adiala Jail.

This collective appeal marked the first such joint call by multiple Congress members for Imran’s release, despite his often critical stance toward US foreign policy. US Representative Greg Casar, who led the initiative, said that since Imran’s removal from office via a no-confidence motion in 2022, multiple legal cases have been filed against him, and he has been imprisoned since August 2023.

The letter also asked that the US seek assurances from Pakistan on Khan’s safety and well-being in custody. Alongside calls for Khan’s release, the Democratic lawmakers said they were concerned over alleged irregularities in Pakistan’s recent elections.

Responding to these concerns, Baloch said, “These letters are also based on incorrect understanding of the political situation in Pakistan.”

She added, "We hope that the US Congress will play a supportive role in strengthening Pakistan-US ties and focus on avenues of mutual collaboration that benefit both our peoples and countries."

Pakistan calls US lawmakers' plea to Biden for Imran Khan’s release ‘counter-productive’

US President Joe Biden said Thursday (Oct 24) that he will issue a formal apology for the treatment of Native American children who were forcibly removed from their families by the US government and put into an abusive boarding school system.

For over 150 years, the schools sought to forcibly assimilate Native Americans, with a recent government report detailing numerous cases of physical, mental and sexual abuse, as well as the deaths of over 950 children.

"I'm heading to do something that should have been done a long time ago," the president said as he left the White House. "To make a formal apology to the Indian nations for the way we treated their children for so many years."

Biden is scheduled to make the official apology Friday on a visit to the Gila River Indian Reservation in Arizona, one of the states with the highest Native American populations in the country and a key battleground in the US election.

The boarding schools, which were run by the US government, were in operation from the early 19th century until the 1970s.

The report found at least 973 children died at these schools, many of which were far from their original homes.

Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland, the first Native American cabinet secretary in US history, was a major force behind the investigation that produced the report.

"For more than a century, tens of thousands of Indigenous children as young as four years old, were taken from their families and communities and forced into boarding schools," Haaland told reporters. "This includes my own family."

"For decades, this terrible chapter was hidden from our history books," she continued. "But now our administration's work will ensure that no one will ever forget."

The apology follows formal declarations in Canada, where thousands of children died at similar boarding schools, and other countries around the world where historic abuses of Indigenous populations are increasingly being recognized.

In a statement, the White House said the apology was being issued in order to "remember and teach our full history, even when it is painful."

"That the president is taking that step tomorrow is so historic, I'm not sure I could adequately put its impact into words," Haaland said.

Biden's visit to Arizona, a state he narrowly won in 2020, comes in the midst of an extremely close presidential campaign between Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican former president Donald Trump.

US President Joe Biden to formally apologise for Indigenous boarding school policy

The Biden administration achieved a significant milestone in its critical minerals strategy Thursday, granting final approval to ioneer's Rhyolite Ridge lithium mine in Nevada, despite ongoing environmental concerns over an endangered flower species. This decision marks the first domestic lithium mining permit issued under President Biden's administration and represents a crucial step toward reducing China's dominance in the global battery metals market.

The announcement triggered an immediate market response, with ioneer's shares surging more than 20% in New York trading before moderating. The approval unlocks substantial financial backing, including a USD 700 million Department of Energy loan and a USD 490 million equity investment from Sibanye Stillwater, positioning the project for immediate advancement.

Laura Daniel-Davis, the Interior Department's acting deputy secretary, emphasised the decision's scientific basis. "We're trying to send a signal that there's no topic with greater importance than addressing climate change," she stated, underscoring the administration's commitment to expanding domestic critical mineral production.

The Rhyolite Ridge project, located approximately 225 miles north of Las Vegas, is projected to produce enough lithium to power 370,000 electric vehicles annually. With construction scheduled to begin next year and production targeted for 2028, the mine is poised to become one of America's largest lithium producers, joining ranks with industry leaders Albemarle and Lithium Americas.

The project has already secured significant commercial partnerships, with Ford Motor Company and a Toyota-Panasonic joint venture committing to purchase lithium from the facility. The mine will employ advanced processing technologies to extract both lithium and boron, with plans to recycle 50% of water used in operations, exceeding industry standards.

However, the approval process highlighted the complex balance between environmental protection and industrial development. The mine site is home to Tiehm's buckwheat, an endangered flower species found nowhere else on Earth. This unique botanical presence has sparked intense debate and opposition from environmental groups, particularly the Center for Biological Diversity (CBD).

The CBD has announced plans to challenge the federal government's decision through legal action. "By greenlighting this mine, the Bureau of Land Management is abandoning its duty to protect endangered species like Tiehm's buckwheat and it's making a mockery of the Endangered Species Act," said Patrick Donnelly, a CBD representative.

The Interior Department has defended its decision by pointing to significant modifications in the mine's operating plan, including redesigned facilities and extensive conservation efforts. These changes include the construction of a greenhouse for flower propagation and other protective measures. Department officials have issued an opinion stating their confidence that the mine's operations will not threaten the flower's survival.

The project's history includes a controversial episode in 2020 when more than 17,000 Tiehm's buckwheat flowers died mysteriously. While initial allegations suggested deliberate destruction, government investigators ultimately attributed the loss to hungry squirrels, though the incident heightened concerns about the species' vulnerability.

James Calaway, Ioneer's chairman, expressed pride in achieving this milestone, noting, "We're proud to be the first U.S. lithium mine permitted by the Biden administration." The company's commitment to environmental stewardship is reflected in its comprehensive site management plans and water conservation efforts.

United States President Joe Biden met with his German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier at Bellevue Palace in Berlin on Friday (Oct 18). Biden arrived in Germany on Thursday, after rescheduling a visit last week to oversee the response to Hurricane Milton which had impacted US several states. This is the first official state visit by an American president since the German reunification. In Germany, Biden called on NATO allies to continue supporting Ukraine amid its war with Russia as he began a farewell visit to Berlin on Friday, just weeks ahead of the presidential elections in the US. Kyiv and its Western allies are concerned that a potential return of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump to the White House could lead to a decrease in US military aid. Therefore, Biden stressed that Western nations must "sustain our support ... until Ukraine wins a just and sustainable peace." "We're headed into a very difficult winter. We cannot let up," he said. On Thursday, Steinmeier presented Biden with the highest class of the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit, Germany's top federal honour reserved for heads of state. During a speech at Bellevue Palace, Steinmeier expressed gratitude to the US president for his decades of support for Germany, Europe, and the transatlantic partnership, dating back to Biden’s first visit to the country 44 years ago. "Mr. President, we have known that you have been interested in Germany for half a century. Germany in turn is deeply grateful to you," the German president said. He also noted that under Biden’s leadership, the transatlantic alliance has become "stronger than ever." "For Germany, friendship with the US was, is and always will be existentially important, both for our security and our democracy, even when there are times of disagreement," he added. Also read: Kremlin says all okay after Putin’s comments on live TV fuel health rumours After receiving the Order of Merit, President Biden reflected on his long-standing relationship with Germany. He reminisced about his initial visit to the country as a young senator when Berlin, Germany, and Europe were divided. "The times I have lived through have taught me that history does move forward, and things can get better. We should never underestimate the power of democracy, the value of alliances," Biden said. "Germany has taught us that change is possible. Countries can and do choose their own destinies. I thank the current leaders of Germany for the choices they’ve made," he added. Speaking to reporters during US President Joe Biden's visit, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said, "We are supporting Ukraine as powerfully as we can and at the same time we are making sure that NATO does not become a party to the war, so that this war does not turn into an even bigger catastrophe." Later, French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer are expected to join Biden and Scholz for further discussions. (With inputs from agencies)

2024 US Elections: In just a few weeks, on November 5, the United States of America will vote to elect its next president.

The two top candidates in this vital race for the White House are the Democratic Party nominee, the current US Vice-president Kamala Harris, and the Republican Party nominee, former president Donald Trump.

The upcoming 2024 presidential elections are very important to both the candidates. On one hand, Kamala Harris has set her sights on becoming the USA's first-ever female president and on the other, Donald Trump is attempting to achieve a feat only accomplished once earlier in US history: regaining the White House after losing it.

Driving the 2024 US Presidential elections are a number of issues of importance to voters. Let's take a look at some of the key issues and where the two candidates stand on them.

Economy

Amid concerns about the US' state of economy and inflation, about eight in 10, or 81 per cent of the voters, as per Pew Research, say that the economy will be very significant to their vote in the upcoming election.

Billionaire 'dying' to be US' 'secretary of cost-cutting,' says ex-president

Voters, as per reports, favour Trump on this issue and, according to News Gallup, 54 per cent in contrast to Harris's 45 per cent think he can better handle the American economy as the president.

Reproductive Rights and Abortion

One of the most contentious issues of the 2024 Presidential elections is abortion and reproductive rights of women.

A Pew Research poll found that while 67 per cent of Harris supporters view abortion as a key issue, only 35 per cent of Trump supporters share their view.

In 2022, the US Supreme Court overturned Roe V Wade, which gave women all over the nation the right to abortion. This happened largely due to justices appointed by Trump, a feat the Republican has boasted about multiple times.

Harris has been vocal about her support for bringing back the federal protections for a woman's right to an abortion as they existed under Roe v. Wade. Meanwhile, Trump, who at one time supported a national ban on the procedure, has softened his stance and now backs the individual state's right to choose.

A key issue and one of Trump's favourite topics, immigration, is important for 82 per cent of his supporters. Meanwhile, only 39 per cent of Harris supporters see it as vital to their vote.

Trump in his rally speeches and at the two debates — with President Joe Biden and Harris — has continued to vilify immigrants, calling them rapists, murderers, etc. Meanwhile, Harris, who has faced criticism for her immigration policies as the VP, has not detailed her position on the topic beyond voicing support for a border security bill.

Gun Policy

America is home to more guns than people, and they are to blame for a staggering number of deaths every year — over 48,000 in 2022, for example.

Despite the gun epidemic, i.e., the unbelievably high number of mishappening, and deaths due to guns, the Right to Bear arms remains a contentious issue.

For both Trump and Harris supporters, gun policies and/or gun rights are important. Among the supporters of the Republican candidate, 53 said the issue was key to them. 49 per cent of Harris supporters also share the sentiment.

Donald Trump has been a vocal supporter of the Second Amendment right to bear arms, and has even positioned himself as a "defender" of the right. As the president, he loosened some restrictions on gun ownership, appointed around 200 federal judges who had "gun-friendly" records, and even ensured that gun sales would continue during the early COVID-19 lockdowns.

His running mate JD Vance even went as far as calling the tragic school shootings that have become very common "a fact of life".

Harris, according to Scientific American, has a long history with the gun rights. During her career as a prosecutor, she supported stricter restrictions on gun ownership, as well as stronger enforcement of existing regulations. As a senator, she worked on legislation that would've mandated universal background checks. As a VP, she and Biden introduced US' first sweeping gun legislation in nearly three decades that enforced stronger background checks, and included a measure to keep guns away from domestic abuse offenders.

US Presidential Election 2024: What key issues are driving the polls? Where do Harris and Trump stand on them?

The US has been quite vocal about its continuous support for Israel following the Oct 7 attack. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have been firm in supporting Israel’s right to defend itself while also expressing concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The US-Israel alliance has dwelled upon the fact that Israel must take action to protect its citizens. The Biden administration has been committed to continuous military support to ensure Israel’s right to security. However, even after a year now, the situation in Gaza still intensifies with rising civilian casualties on a daily basis.

But the question arises: Will this support affect the vote bank for Democrats among Arab Americans?

Many feel that the Biden administration failed to make an agreement on both sides and call for a ceasefire. This has sparked protests all over the world, particularly amongst Muslim countries, who have expressed anger and believe that the administration should take a stronger stand on humanitarian aid for people in war-battered Gaza.

In recent weeks, the US Vice President and Democrats have been meeting with Arab and Muslim leaders in Michigan. During her campaign rally in Michigan, Harris was even asked to take a step back from Biden’s Israel policy and urge for a ceasefire.

In the past, Arab Americans were a majority voting bank for Democrats, especially after 9/11 and because of Trump’s anti-Muslim dialogues. Traditionally, the total voter turnout of Arab Americans has been over 80 per cent. However, this year only 63 per cent of the members of the Arab community are looking forward to the elections next month.

Harris seems to be concerned about Arab voters in Michigan. Some community leaders have also mentioned that the majority of Arab Americans might withhold their support for Democrats in the 2024 elections unless some changes are made in the policies.

According to Swing State Poll 2024- Muslims and Arabs in Michigan play an important role in changing the whole outcome of the US Presidential Elections. Their main concern revolves around the lack of administration decision-making in calling for an immediate ceasefire and the constant supply of military aid to Israel amid endless casualties. A recent poll by Arab Americans Institute shows that the Democrats are hitting an all-time low of 23 per cent after October 7.

Also, voters of the Arab community are preferring Republicans to take over the next Congress. This can have a huge impact, as the community played an important role in contributing to Biden’s victory in 2020.

Harris is working towards connecting with the larger Muslim and Arab citizens. The effort, however, comes as tension between Israel and Lebanon has been rising.

Many progressive Democrats have also criticised the administration over human rights issues and have been pressuring the Biden administration for de-escalation and ebsuring humanitarian aid supply to the people in Gaza. Many vocal figures, like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, have questioned the policies on the conflict.

Also read: 'Hope he's okay': Harris mocks Trump after Town Hall turns into impromptu concert In recent weeks, the US Vice President and Democrats have been meeting with Arab and Muslim leaders in Michigan. Watch | US Elections 2024: Donald Trump Edges Out Kamala Harris in Betting Odds × According to Swing State Poll 2024- Muslims and Arabs in Michigan play an important role in changing the whole outcome of the US Presidential Elections. This has created a divide within the party, with some supporting the stance while others being critical of it. With days passing by, the crisis in Gaza remains unresolved even as both Harris and Biden have been trying to strike a balance between the two sides.

Biden says Israel must improve Gaza's humanitarian situation in 30 days or risk losing US military aid

Author and journalist Bob Woodward in his new book “War” has now provided more insights into the level of distrust among US President Joe Biden and Israel PM Benjamin Netanyahu. According to excerpts from the book, Biden didn’t just call Netanyahu ‘fu**ing liar’ and ‘the son of a bi**h’ but also labelled close aides of Bibi as ‘liars.’

Biden reportedly said that “18 of the 19 people who work for Netanyahu are liars,” with Woodward saying there has been “total distrust.”

But the author adds that despite the glaring tensions between the two leaders, the geopolitical reality is that “We are allies of Israel, and Biden sticks to that.”

Ukraine is asking for a NATO membership invitation before Joe Biden leaves the White House, arguing it would be a fitting legacy for the US president, a senior Ukrainian diplomat said.

"Our idea is that giving Ukraine (an) invitation at this moment is a political signal," Nataliia Galibarenko, Kyiv's ambassador to NATO, told Reuters.

"We sincerely believe that it can be part of the legacy of (the) current American administration," she said in an interview at the Ukrainian mission to NATO, opposite the alliance’s headquarters in Brussels.

Next month's US presidential election creates major uncertainty for Ukraine as Washington has been Kyiv's biggest provider of military aid for its war against Russia's invasion.

While Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris has signalled continuing support for Ukraine, she has not spelled out the level of that support. Republican ex-President Donald Trump has not been clear about how he would handle the war.

Being in NATO would make Ukraine part of the U.S.-led military alliance's mutual defence pact, which means an attack on one member is considered an attack on all, although the accession process can take years of adapting to NATO standards.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has made clear in recent weeks that he sees an early NATO invitation as part of his "victory plan".

In the interview, Galibarenko elaborated on the rationale for Kyiv's push. She argued an invitation would remove a major bone of contention between Kyiv and Moscow.

Moscow has cited Ukraine's potential membership of NATO to justify the war while Ukraine has insisted it needs to join the alliance to protect against any future Russian aggression.

"If we will say that the invitation is there, for the Russian Federation, it would be like a final verdict – so that's it, so you cannot raise the stakes using this topic anymore," Galibarenko said in the interview, which took place on Tuesday.

NATO has declared Ukraine will join its ranks and its path to the alliance is irreversible. But it has said Kyiv cannot join while at war and declined to put a timeline on membership.

Most NATO members, including its predominant power, the United States, have shown no willingness to extend a membership invitation to Ukraine at this stage.

A senior US government official, briefing reporters on condition of anonymity, said last week that there has been no shift in Washington’s position.

Galibarenko said Kyiv is not pushing for an immediate launch of membership talks but a formal invitation now would send a powerful message.

Asked when Ukraine would like the invitation to be issued, she replied: "The sooner the better."

Trump claims Democrats 'stole' election nomination from Biden: 'Like candy from a baby'

Hispanic voters in the US have always favoured Democrats over Republicans. But that may not be the case with the current Democratic presidential candidate, Kamala Harris. Polls have revealed that Harris is performing poorly among Latino voters than any Democratic candidate since 2004. On the other hand, GOP candidate Donald Trump is having an impressive run, with more and more Hispanics now giving thumbs up to his anti-immigration rhetoric.

Working-class voters as well as younger men in the Hispanic community now prefer Trump over Harris, polls show.

‘Que mala’ Harris

With the Hispanic voters in mind, Trump’s host in Las Vegas and the multimillionaire president of Goya Foods, Bob Unanue recently coined a new term for the US vice president: “que mala” Harris. In Spanish, ‘que mala’ means “so bad.”

“Under Kamala — que mala … I don’t say that to get a buzz or as an insult, it’s reality. She is bad for this country, she is bad for Latinos,” said Unanue.

What polls reveal

Pew Research Center in early July found that support for both Trump and President Joe Biden, before he dropped out, among the Hispanic community stood at 36 per cent each, whereas 24 per cent backed Robert F Kennedy Jr.

Now that Kennedy has ended his campaign, Kamala Harris’ support base has widened to 57 per cent, against Trump’s 39 per cent.

But a major sign of Harris’ trouble is that her support among Hispanics remains much lower than what Biden had in 2020. In that election, 61 per cent of the Latino vote was for Biden and 36 per cent for Trump.

Why do Hispanics matter?

There are more than 36 million registered Hispanic voters in the US.

They constitute nearly 15 per cent of all voters in the US. Their number has increased substantially, by four million to be precise, since the 2020 elections.

Trump rises high in betting market

The US presidential election is now just three weeks away, and Trump has his largest lead over Harris in betting odds.

Prediction sites such as BetOnline, Polymarket, PredictIt, and Kalshi are putting their money on Trump’s victory now.

On the other hand, GOP candidate Donald Trump is having an impressive run, with more and more Hispanics now giving thumbs up to his anti-immigration rhetoric. Working-class voters as well as younger men in the Hispanic community now prefer Trump over Harris, polls show. ‘Que mala’ Harris With the Hispanic voters in mind, Trump’s host in Las Vegas and the multimillionaire president of Goya Foods, Bob Unanue recently coined a new term for the US vice president: “que mala” Harris. In Spanish, ‘que mala’ means “so bad.” “Under Kamala — que mala … I don’t say that to get a buzz or as an insult, it’s reality. She is bad for this country, she is bad for Latinos,” said Unanue. What polls reveal Pew Research Center in early July found that support for both Trump and President Joe Biden, before he dropped out, among the Hispanic community stood at 36 per cent each, whereas 24 per cent backed Robert F Kennedy Jr. Now that Kennedy has ended his campaign, Kamala Harris’ support base has widened to 57 per cent, against Trump’s 39 per cent. Also read: US Presidential Election 2024: What key issues are driving the polls? Where do Harris and Trump stand on them? But a major sign of Harris’ trouble is that her support among Hispanics remains much lower than what Biden had in 2020. In that election, 61 per cent of the Latino vote was for Biden and 36 per cent for Trump. Why do Hispanics matter? There are more than 36 million registered Hispanic voters in the US. They constitute nearly 15 per cent of all voters in the US. Their number has increased substantially, by four million to be precise, since the 2020 elections. Trump rises high in betting market The US presidential election is now just three weeks away, and Trump has his largest lead over Harris in betting odds. Prediction sites such as BetOnline, Polymarket, PredictIt, and Kalshi are putting their money on Trump’s victory now. Former Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi on Tuesday (Oct 15) admitted that she still has not spoken to United States President Joe Biden since her interference in July reportedly led to his decision to drop out of the presidential race, following the Democrat's disastrous debate performance against his Republican rival Donald Trump.

During the Politics Weekly America podcast, Pelosi told Guardian's Jonathan Freedland, that although she continues to regard the US president as a great friend and longtime political ally, she believed a cold political calculation was necessary after the evidence of Biden’s failing mental acuity.

“Not since then, no,” she said when asked if she had spoken to Biden since. “But I’m prayerful about it.”

“I have the greatest respect for him. I think he’s one of the great consequential presidents of our country,” she said.

“I think his legacy had to be protected. I didn’t see that happening in the course that it was on, the election was on. My call was just to, ‘Let’s get on a better course.’ He will make the decision as to what that is. And he made that decision. But I think he has some unease because we’ve been friends for decades," Pelosi added.

The former House Speaker was among a handful of senior Democrats who said that Biden should reconsider his re-election bid when the polls indicated that he was doing poorly against Trump.

She emphasised, "Elections are decisions", adding, "You decide to win. Obama was speaking at a rally in Pennsylvania and at an event for Black voters, where he specifically urged the Black men in the swing state to support Harris.

He questioned their unwillingness to vote for her. According to a September NAACP poll, over one-quarter of Black men under 50 say they will vote for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

“We have not yet seen the same kinds of energy and turnout in all quarters of our neighborhoods and communities as we saw when I was running. Now, I also want to say that that seems to be more pronounced with the brothers,” Obama said.

“You’re coming up with all kinds of reasons and excuses. I’ve got a problem with that. Part of it makes me think that, well, you just aren’t feeling the idea of having a woman as president, and you’re coming up with other alternatives and reasons for that," the former president said.

Obama added, "When we get in trouble and the system isn’t working for us, they’re the ones out there marching and protesting.”

The former US president while addressing the Fitzgerald Field House in Pittsburgh, called on residents of the crucial swing state to vote for Harris and down-ballot for other Democratic candidates like Pennsylvania Senator Bob Casey.

“We need a president who actually cares about solving problems and making your life better, and that’s what Kamala Harris will do,” Obama said. “And to help her do it, she will need a Senate full of serious public servants like Bob Casey.”

According to recent surveys released by Quinnipiac University, Harris was leading in Pennsylvania, but polling between her and Trump has been close.

Obama-Harris' bond during the campaigns

Barack Obama and Kamala Harris have been supporting each other's campaigns for a long time now. Harris was an early supporter of Obama’s long-shot bid against Hilary Clinton, starting in 2007 when she knocked on doors for him ahead of the Iowa caucuses.

Similarly, in 2010, Obama backed Harris when she ran for attorney-general of California, calling her "a dear, dear friend of mine".

Further slamming Trump in his Pittsburgh event, Obama said, "This election is going to be tight because there are a lot of Americans who are still struggling out there.”

“I get why people are looking to shake things up. I mean, I am the hope-y, change-y guy. So I understand people feeling frustrated. We can do better. What I cannot understand is why anybody would think that Donald Trump will shake things up in a way that is good for you."

He added, "The good news is, Kamala Harris – she doesn’t have concepts for a plan. She has an actual plan to make your life better.”

Obama's 'diaper' joke at Trump

Taking another jibe at the Republican presidential candidate, Obama shared a personal story related to the high cost of diapers when his first daughter Malia was born in 1998. “I remember buying diapers after Malia was born and thinking, ‘That’s how much they cost?’” Obama said to the crowd.

“Do you think Donald Trump ever changed a diaper?” Barack Obama said.

The crowd laughed and someone in the audience quickly responded, "His own!". Obama laughed and pointed to the audience member, clearly amused by the joke.

“I almost said that,” the former US president chuckled, “But I decided I shouldn’t say it.”

Part of it makes me think that, well, you just aren’t feeling the idea of having a woman as president, and you’re coming up with other alternatives and reasons for that," the former president said. Obama added, "When we get in trouble and the system isn’t working for us, they’re the ones out there marching and protesting.” The former US president while addressing the Fitzgerald Field House in Pittsburgh, called on residents of the crucial swing state to vote for Harris and down-ballot for other Democratic candidates like Pennsylvania Senator Bob Casey. Obama-Harris' bond during the campaigns Barack Obama and Kamala Harris have been supporting each other's campaigns for a long time now. Further slamming Trump in his Pittsburgh event, Obama said, "This election is going to be tight because there are a lot of Americans who are still struggling out there.” “I get why people are looking to shake things up. I mean, I am the hope-y, change-y guy. So I understand people feeling frustrated. We can do better. What I cannot understand is why anybody would think that Donald Trump will shake things up in a way that is good for you." He added, "The good news is, Kamala Harris – she doesn’t have concepts for a plan. She has an actual plan to make your life better.” Obama's 'diaper' joke at Trump Taking another jibe at the Republican presidential candidate, Obama shared a personal story related to the high cost of diapers when his first daughter Malia was born in 1998. “I almost said that,” the former US president chuckled, “But I decided I shouldn’t say it.” (With inputs from agencies)
