Chinese President Xi Jinping, on Saturday (Nov 16), warned the United States to refrain from crossing the "red line" in support of Taiwan while assuring his counterpart, US President Joe Biden, that China was willing to work with his successor, president-elect Donald Trump.

Biden and Xi met on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Peru, amid concerns of trade wars and diplomatic upheaval with the changing US administration.

<h2>Xi's warning</h2>

As per Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, speaking to Biden, Xi outlined four critical "red lines": Taiwan's status, democracy and human rights issues, China's development interests, and pathways to growth. He asserted these were "the most important guardrails and safety net for China-U.S. relations," and "must not be challenged".

"The separatist actions of 'Taiwan independence' are incompatible with peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait," added the Chinese premier.

He also warned that the US "should not intervene in bilateral disputes... and not condone or support provocative impulses," in the South China Sea.

<h2>China's 'Red Line'</h2>

Beijing claims that the independently governed Taiwan is its territory and consistently refuses to rule out the use of force to seize it. Meanwhile, Taiwan maintains that it is a self-ruled territory, a claim backed by the United States — the US is Taiwan's main security backer. However, the US does not recognize Taipei diplomatically.

This year, China as per AFP stepped up its activities in the contested waterway of the South China Sea, reinforcing sweeping territorial claims that have been repeatedly rejected under international law.

<h2>On Ukraine War</h2>

Defending China's position on Ukraine as "open and aboveboard," Xi said that Beijing would not allow tensions on the Korean peninsula to "descend into conflict".

<h2>Toward 'smooth transition' with Trump</h2>

Despite these warnings, Xi extended an olive branch to the incoming Trump administration. He said his nation would "strive for a smooth transition" in relations with the new United States administration.

"China is ready to work with the new US administration to maintain communication, expand cooperation and manage differences, so as to strive for a smooth transition of the China-US relationship," Xi told Biden.

Xi's remarks come after years of tense relations between Washington and Beijing, particularly during Donald Trump’s first term, which saw a bruising trade war and tariffs on billions of dollars in Chinese goods. Xi acknowledged the need for the two nations to find a better way to coexist, cautioning against framing the relationship in terms of rivalry or conflict.&nbsp;

"Major country competition should not be the underlying logic of the times," he said, urging against isolating strategies like "small yards with high fences."

"A stable China-US relationship is critical," to both parties and the world, he added.

India’s opposition leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday (Nov 16) took a dig at Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, comparing him to United States President Joe Biden over what he called “memory loss”. Gandhi, who is the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the lower house of the Indian Parliament, was speaking at an election rally in the poll-bound Western Indian state of Maharashtra.

Gandhi in his speech recalled how Joe Biden once introduced Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky as Russian President Vladimir Putin at an event.

"My sister told me that she had heard Modi Ji's speech. And in that speech, whatever we say, Modi Ji is saying the same thing these days. I don't know. Maybe he has lost his memory. The former President of America used to forget and he had to be reminded from behind. The President of Ukraine came and the President of America said that Russian President Putin had come. He had lost his memory. Similarly, our Prime Minister is losing his memory," said Gandhi at the event.

Gandhi attacked Modi for accusing the Congress party of attacking the Constitution.

"For the past one year, I have been saying that the BJP has been attacking the Constitution in my speeches. But, PM Modi is saying that Congress is attacking the Constitution. He came to know that people were getting angry, and he is now saying that I am attacking the Constitution," he said.

United States President Joe Biden jokingly made lighthearted comments about the possibility of him being sent to space to rescue the two NASA astronauts stranded at the International Space Station (ISS).

During the APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation)&nbsp;economic conference meeting with Peruvian President Dina Boluarte, Biden shared a personal anecdote about his wife's playful threats to send him to space when he becomes unmanageable.&nbsp;

Upon noticing NASA administrator Bill Nelson there, Biden said, “Every time my wife thinks I’m getting out of hand, she says, ‘I’m going to call NASA Administrator Bill Nelson and have him send you to space."&nbsp;

Biden jokes his wife wishes to send him to space, shows concern for stranded astronauts

US President Joe Biden and Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping will attend the first day of an Asia-Pacific leaders' summit Friday ahead of a face-to-face meeting under a cloud of diplomatic uncertainty cast by Donald Trump's election victory.

Biden and Xi are due to hold talks on Saturday, in what a US administration official said will probably be the last meeting between the sitting leaders of the world's largest economies before Trump is sworn in in January.

With the Republican president-elect having signalled a confrontational approach to Beijing for his second term, the bilateral meeting will be a closely watched affair.

Xi and Biden arrived in Lima Thursday along with other world leaders for a two-day heads-of-state meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) grouping.

APEC, created in 1989 with the goal of regional trade liberalization, brings together 21 economies that jointly represent about 60 per cent of world GDP and over 40 per cent of global commerce.

The summit program was to focus on trade and investment for what proponents dubbed inclusive growth.

But uncertainty over Trump's next moves now clouds the agenda -- as it does for the COP29 climate talks underway in Azerbaijan, and a G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro next week.

On Thursday, APEC ministers, including US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, held their own meeting behind closed doors in Lima to set the tone for the summit to follow.

Trump announced this week he will replace Blinken with Senator Marco Rubio, a China hawk.

<h2>'America First'&nbsp;</h2>

The summit will also be attended by Japan, South Korea, Canada, Australia and Indonesia, among others.

President Vladimir Putin of APEC member Russia will not be present.

Trump's "America First" agenda is based on protectionist trade policies, increased domestic fossil fuel extraction, and avoiding foreign conflicts.

Biden, Xi to attend Asia-Pacific summit, to hold talks on Saturday

U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping are set to hold talks in Lima, Peru, on the sidelines of the APEC summit. The meeting aims to address key issues in U.S.-China relations, including trade, security, and global economic challenges.

Joe Biden and Xi Jinping To Meet In Lima At The Sidelines Of APEC

President Joe Biden and President-elect Donald Trump met at the White House on Wednesday (November 13), following Biden’s invitation. This meeting upholds the long-standing tradition signifying transfer of power between administrations.

This marked the first time Biden and Trump had met since their debate in late June, before Biden made the decision to end his re-election bid. Biden congratulated Trump on securing a second term and welcomed him back to the White House.

Besides the videos of their highly anticipated meeting, one video has particularly captured the attention of viewers. The AI-generated video reimagined Biden and Trump’s meeting in a much different way than it went down.

The video starts with Trump and Biden sitting at the meeting table. Biden tells Trump, “This job is not fun.” Trump responds, “Missed you in the race,” and to which Biden replies he wishes they could get out of here.

From there, the video changes&nbsp;to a montage of Biden and Trump having a fun day out together. They go to a fair, eat corndogs and ice cream, go biking, attend a baseball game, and even go fishing and horseback riding. They also sing, dance, visit a casino, go for a hike and roast marshmallows while camping. The video ends with the two men back at the table, where Biden wistfully says, “Maybe one day…”

The video has garnered millions of views and multiple comments from netizens. “AI is so scary. It’s so realistic,” commented one user. Another wrote, “Roller skating had me laughing, then the roulette table had me howling.”

They also sing, dance, visit a casino, go for a hike and roast marshmallows while camping. The video ends with the two men back at the table, where Biden wistfully says, “Maybe one day…” The video has garnered millions of views and multiple comments from netizens. “AI is so scary. USA: Trump Lands In Washington D.C. To Meet Joe Biden Post Presidential Win

United States President-elect Donald Trump and President Joe Biden are preparing for the highly awkward meeting at the White House on Wednesday (Nov 13) as the incumbent is all set to welcome his successor, whom he has labelled as a danger to America.&nbsp;

The meeting will be held at 11:00 am EST and is expected to underscore the peaceful transition of power in the US, four years after Trump contested the results of the 2020 presidential election which Biden won. Notably, Trump never invited Biden to the White House, which is a post-presidential election tradition in the US.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, this is also disappointing for Biden, his staff and the Democrats, who witnessed Trump clinching victory over Republican candidate Kamala Harris by winning all seven of the key swing states and the popular vote.&nbsp;

Moreover, Republicans also control&nbsp;the US&nbsp;House of Representatives and the Senate.

This meeting at the White House marks another victory for Trump, who will return there for the first time since he left early on the morning of Biden's inauguration in January 2021.&nbsp;

“Think about it, four years ago he had to turn over the keys to Biden and now he gets to take them not only from Biden but from his designated replacement who he just beat. So, it certainly is a victory lap,” said GOP lobbyist Marc Lampkin, ex-deputy campaign manager for former President George W&nbsp;Bush.

<h2>'Moment of revenge'</h2>

A former Trump campaign official described the White House visit as a moment of revenge for the US President-elect.&nbsp;

“I’m sure it will be a bitter pill for President Biden but a moment of sweet revenge in some ways for President Trump, to come back to the place he had to give up four years ago but come back with a truly significant victory, including the popular vote, which a Republican hasn’t won in a long time,” the source said, according to The Hill.&nbsp;

Biden has repeatedly called Trump a threat to democracy. He also appeared to call Trump supporters "garbage" weeks before the election.&nbsp;

Trump, Biden set to meet at White House for transition meeting after Harris loses US polls

US President-elect Donald Trump, who is set to re-enter the White House after beating the Democrat Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election has started selecting key members of his cabinet. The former president picked Republican Representative Mike Waltz as his national security adviser, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters on Monday (Nov 11).

Waltz has been a Trump loyalist and has served in the National Guard as a colonel. He has been a critic of Chinese activity in the Asia-Pacific and has voiced the need for the United States to be ready for a potential conflict in the region.

Waltz will be responsible for briefing Trump on key national security issues and coordinating with different agencies.

As per a CNN reporter's post on X on Monday (Nov 11), Trump is also expected to tap immigration adviser Stephen Miller as White House deputy chief of staff for policy.&nbsp;

Miller's appointment would place the architect of Trump's restrictive first-term immigration agenda in a top position.

Miller was a White House senior adviser for policy during Trump's 2017-2021 presidency and the driving force behind the Republican's wide-ranging immigration crackdown. Policies included the construction of a wall on the US - Mexico border, banning people from certain Muslim-majority nations and elsewhere, and a contentious 2018 border policy that separated thousands of migrant families.

Trump, who takes office in January, said in a social media post that the former acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from his first administration would be in charge of the country's borders in his new administration starting Jan&nbsp;20.

The president-elect made cracking down on illegal immigration the central element of his campaign, promising mass deportations. He is expected to mobilise agencies across the US government to help him deport record number&nbsp;of immigrants in an operation that Vice President-elect JD Vance has said could remove an estimated 1 million people per year.

<h2>US Senator Marco Rubio</h2>

Further, Trump selected US Senator Marco Rubio to be his secretary of state, sources said in November, putting the Florida-born politician on track to be the first Latino to serve as America's top diplomat once the Republican president-elect takes office in January.

Rubio was arguably the most hawkish option on Trump's shortlist for secretary of state, and he has in past years&nbsp;advocated for a muscular foreign policy concerning America's geopolitical foes, including China, Iran and Cuba.

However, over the last few&nbsp;years he has softened some of his stances to align more closely with Trump's views. The president-elect accuses past US presidents of leading America into costly and futile wars and has pushed for a more restrained foreign policy.

The new administration will confront a world more volatile and dangerous than it was when Trump took office in 2017, with wars raging in Ukraine and the Middle East and China aligning itself more closely with US foes Russia and Iran.

<h2>Ukraine Crisis High on Rubio's Agenda</h2>

The 53-year-old has said in recent interviews that Ukraine needs to seek a negotiated settlement with Russia rather than focus on regaining all territory that Russia has taken in the last decade.&nbsp;

He was also one of the 15 Republican senators to vote against a $95 billion military aid package for Ukraine, which was passed in April this year.&nbsp;

By selecting Rubio for a key policy role, Trump may help consolidate gains among Latinos and make clear that they have a place at the highest levels of his administration.

Melania Trump, wife of US president-elect Donald Trump, has turned down an invitation to visit the White House and meet First Lady Jill Biden, reportedly because she's still angry over the FBI’s 2022 search of her Mar-a-Lago residence.

According to The New York Post, Melania declined the meeting, a traditional courtesy extended between outgoing and incoming first ladies, because “Jill Biden’s husband authorised the FBI snooping through her underwear drawer”.

The publication quoted a source close to Melania as saying: “The Bidens are disgusting,” and that “Jill Biden isn’t someone Melania needs to meet.”

While Melania is opting out of the customary tour and tea — a tradition she participated in when Michelle Obama hosted her after Trump’s 2016 win — her husband, President-elect Donald Trump, is expected to meet with President Joe Biden in the Oval Office on Wednesday (Nov 13).

Trump had declined to extend the same invitation to the Bidens in 2020, breaking the decades long White House custom.

<h2>Mar-a-Lago search</h2>

The 2022 FBI search of Mar-a-Lago was part of a federal investigation into classified documents that were reportedly taken from the White House after Trump’s presidency. The classified documents case was dismissed by US Judge Aileen Cannon in July.

Melania has previously voiced her frustration about the search in a Fox and Friends interview in September, calling it an “invasion of privacy.”

She described returning to her residence to find her personal spaces ransacked, including her closet and her son Barron’s room: “I saw unpleasant stuff that nobody wants to see.”

“You get angry because, you know, nobody should be putting up with that kind of stuff,” she added.

US Presidential Election 2024: Joe Biden invites Donald Trump to White House for smooth transfer of power

Democrats are rushing to blame United States President Joe Biden for his Vice President Kamala Harris'&nbsp;massive defeat against Republican leader Donald Trump in the 2024 US presidential elections. While talking to the New York Times, veteran Democrat and former House speaker Nancy Pelosi blasted Biden for delaying his withdrawal from the race. “Had the president gotten out sooner, there may have been other candidates in the race,” Pelosi was quoted as saying by the paper.

“The anticipation was that, if the president were to step aside, there would be an open primary,” she added.’

Some Democrats are believed to have also raised questions on Biden’s advisors for never saying “no” to the US president.

A former campaign aide meanwhile said Harris' close association with Biden’s policies may also have discouraged potential voters from supporting the Democratic candidate. Harris’ remarks on ABC News that “she wouldn’t have done anything differently than Biden” further raised concerns that her administration may not be that different from the era of a very unpopular incumbent president.

Apparently, many American&nbsp;voters didn’t know that United States President Joe Biden had pulled out of the race for the White House even on Election Day,&nbsp;November 5. In a shocking episode revealing how politically unaware some people in the US are, a trend spike was observed on Google with people searching: “Did Biden drop out” and “who is contesting”.

The trend spiked on November 5 and then witnessed even greater interest on November 6, indicating that many people in the US were unaware of the fact that Biden had stepped away five months ago and Vice President Kamala Harris was now contesting on the Democratic ticket against Republican candidate Donald Trump.

Television host and comedian Jimmy Kimmel also mocked unaware voters during his show Jimmy Kimmel Live, where he aired interviews with Americans who responded positively when asked ‘if they would go to vote in presidential elections’ on November 6, a day after the polls.

Clueless US voters Googled ‘where to vote for Biden’ in Trump vs Harris contest

<h2>Presidential elections in California: Harris ahead</h2>

California was won by its native candidate Kamala Harris, with 54 Electoral College votes going her way. This is the biggest in the nation, but it could not prevent her from losing the national race to Donald Trump.

Long considered a strong Democratic base or 'blue state', California's electoral college has favoured Democratic presidential candidates since 1992.

&nbsp;

At the time of writing this, over 55 per cent of votes in California were counted, with Harris having 57.3 per cent, or 5.75 million. Trump got 40.1 per cent, with 4.02 mn votes.

In the past, California gave Democrats a majority of 10 per cent or more, except in 2004 when John Kerry won it by 9.95%.&nbsp;

In 2020, Joe Biden got 63.5 per cent of the popular vote, which was the highest vote share of any candidate since 1936.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

Harris was California's state attorney general in 2011-2017 and a Senator in 2017-2021 before becoming the vice president.

She also has the distinction of being the first Californian to be a major party's presidential candidate since Ronald Reagan, a Republican, in 1984.
&nbsp;

Herbert Hoover, Richard Nixon and Reagan were&nbsp;Californians who became president.

<h2>California US House of Representatives Election results&nbsp;</h2>

All congressional districts of California held elections for the House of Representatives, to choose 52 representatives.

At the time of writing this, 40 of the 52 races have been called by Associated Press News Agency, with Democrats leading in 36, and Republicans in 4.

&nbsp;

<h2>US Senate Election results in California</h2>

One seat to the US Senate went for election, but there was an oddity.&nbsp;Democrat Senator Dianne Feinstein died in office in September 2023. This meant there were two elections on the ballot in the same Senate seat: One to fill the remainder of Feinstein's term till January 3, 2025, and another for the full term that will end in January 2031.

At the time of writing this, AP has called the Senate race in California for Democratic Adam Schiff, who won more than 57 per cent of the votes.
