Hawaii US Presidential Election 2024: Voting, Senate, House, results, What you should know

Former US president and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has long been targeting his opponents with threats and provocative remarks, even much ahead of the US presidential elections.

As he continued to campaign for his electoral victory, Trump has been making violent statements, targeting his opponents or warning what would happen to America if he was not elected.

Earlier in March, Trump made comments about US auto manufacturing jobs that have moved to Mexico, saying, "We’re going to put a 100% tariff on every single car that comes across the line, and you’re not going to be able to sell those cars – if I get elected. Now, if I don’t get elected, it’s going to be a bloodbath, for the whole—that’s going to be the least of it. It’s going to be a bloodbath for the country. That’ll be the least of it. But they’re not going to sell those cars.”

However later, his campaign said that he was referring to an economic bloodbath for the automaker industry, while others argued that he was referring to the country as well.

But they’re not going to sell those cars.” However later, his campaign said that he was referring to an economic bloodbath for the automaker industry, while others argued that he was referring to the country as well. How a missing apostrophe led to uproar over US President Joe Biden's 'garbage' remark

A recent gaffe by President Joe Biden is turning into a "gift" for former President and Republican candidate Donald Trump. At a rally on Wednesday night in Green Bay, Trump launched a scathing attack on the Democrats, stating, "They treat you like garbage. They treat our whole country like garbage." To emphasize his point, he made quite a spectacle by dressing as a sanitation worker and driving a garbage truck to the Wisconsin event, responding to Biden's apparent verbal misstep from the night before. While Kamala Harris has sought to distance herself from Biden's gaffe and promised to be a president for "all Americans", the question is- Will it cost Kamala Harris the election?

'You are not garbage': Trump rides garbage truck in uniform for supporters at rally in jibe to Biden's remarks

For starters, the history of all US presidents to date can be broadly classified into seven categories; starting right from George Washington belonging to the founding era to modern era President Joe Biden. Let’s have a look at the USA’s presidential history, spanning 46 presidents so far.

The timeline starts in 1789, with President George Washington at the helm. The period from 1789 to 1825 is considered the founding era of the United States, which saw presidents like John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and James Monroe. During this period, America opposed European colonialism.

The next era, from 1825 to 1861, was marked by significant expansions and divisions of the country. This era saw presidents like Andrew Jackson, James K. Polk, Millard Fillmore and James Buchanan. It was during this era that the US gained Oregon territory, along with California and New Mexico.

Then came the era of civil war, starting from 1861 to 1877. Abraham Lincoln led the country through the Civil War and also ensured the end of slavery. Lincoln was later assassinated. Other leaders who emerged in this era were Andrew Johnson and Ulysses S. Grant. Grant is known for fighting for the rights of African American migrants.

The era of industrialisation came next, lasting from 1877 to 1921, overseen by two presidents: Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson. World War 1 happened during this era, leading to the formation of the League of Nations.

The great depression era slammed the brakes on the USA’s economic advance. President Herbert Hoover’s (1929 - 1933) policies were widely criticised in the US during this time. Franklin D. Roosevelt (1933 - 1945) became the next leader and led the country through World War 2.

Biden calls Trump supporters 'floating garbage,' faces immediate backlash

Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris said Wednesday (Oct 30) while talking to reporters that she doesn't agree with President Joe Biden's remarks labelling supporters of rival Donald Trump as "garbage".

Electric vehicle manufacturer Polestar has issued a stark warning that proposed Biden administration regulations aimed at restricting Chinese vehicle technology would effectively end its operations in the United States, including the sale of cars manufactured on American soil. The Swedish automaker's response, filed Monday with the Commerce Department, highlights the complex challenges facing global automotive companies with Chinese connections.

The proposed rule, designed to address national security concerns regarding Chinese connected vehicles on American roads, would have far-reaching implications beyond its intended scope, according to Polestar's formal comments. Despite being a Swedish automaker and a brand of Volvo Cars, Polestar's majority ownership by Chinese automotive giant Geely would subject it to these restrictions.

In its defence, Polestar emphasised its predominantly non-Chinese operational structure. The company highlighted that seven of its ten directors are from Europe or the United States, and its CEO is German. Furthermore, of its approximately 2,800 global employees, only 280 are based in China, underscoring the company's limited Chinese operational footprint.

"Commerce should consider whether a rule that effectively shuts down the operations of a lawfully organised U.S. company with substantial U.S. investments and so many personnel and key decision-making units in friendly nations and the United States is appropriately tailored to address the stated national security concerns," Polestar stated in its filing.

The implications of this proposed regulation extend beyond Polestar. According to media reports from May, four Chinese vehicle models are currently sold in the United States, including the Polestar 2 and Volvo's S90 sedans. The Commerce Department has already indicated that major American automakers General Motors and Ford Motor would need to cease importing vehicles from China under the proposed rule.

Ford Motor Company has also raised concerns about the broad interpretation of the regulation. In its own comments to the Commerce Department on Monday, Ford warned that the rule could be interpreted "to prohibit the sale of completed connected vehicles by U.S. automakers if those vehicles were assembled within the jurisdiction of a foreign adversary such as by a foreign affiliate of a domestic U.S. automaker."

The situation highlights the increasing complexity of global automotive supply chains and corporate structures in an era of growing geopolitical tensions. Polestar's case is particularly noteworthy as it demonstrates how companies with multinational operations and ownership structures could be caught in the crossfire of regulations aimed at specific countries.

The impact of the proposed rule would be particularly severe for Polestar's U.S. operations, affecting not only vehicles imported from China but also those manufactured at its South Carolina facility. This aspect of the regulation has raised questions about whether the rule's scope might be broader than necessary to achieve its national security objectives.

When approached for comment on these concerns, the Commerce Department declined to provide any statement, leaving questions about potential modifications to the proposed rule unanswered.

The automotive industry's response to this proposed regulation reflects broader concerns about the increasing intersection of national security considerations with international trade and technology transfer. As connected vehicles become more sophisticated and integral to transportation infrastructure, the balance between security concerns and international commerce becomes more challenging to maintain.

This regulatory challenge comes at a critical time for the electric vehicle industry, as manufacturers worldwide are expanding their production and sales capabilities to meet growing demand for sustainable transportation options. The proposed rule's impact on companies like Polestar could have significant implications for competition and consumer choice in the U.S. electric vehicle market.
